STAHL 2014

on 6 November at the CCD Congress Center Düsseldorf

Dear Sir or Madam,

Political decisions in Germany and Europe in 2014 could seriously affect the steel industry. In Germany the energy transition is also of industrial-political importance. Further energy and environmental poli-cy decisions in Brussels and Berlin will also have major effects on the steel industry in Germany. What changes in political conditions can we expect? And what impact will Europe’s structural crisis have on the development of the steel industry in Germany?

This year’s motto for the event “Perspectives with Steel” refers to the challenges as well as the opportunities for the material. Steel has major innovative potentials and offers solutions for the meg-atrends of urbanisation and mobility, as well as sustainability. What potentials do high-strength steels have regarding the required light construction? How can climate policies and the EU Emission Trading System be effectively designed whilst ensuring the competitiveness of energy-intensive industries? What are the perspectives for industrial added value networks? These questions and other central technical- scientific topics related to steel production and product innovations will be discussed during the STAHL 2014 annual event.

Eight Talks about Steel form the basis of STAHL 2014. These will examine specialist topics in detail. We want to discuss with you the current technical and economic challenges that will shape the steel industry in future. The event will close with the traditional Steel Get-Together, which will start at 6.00 p.m.

Best wishes,

Hans Jürgen Kerkhoff Chairman Steel Institute VDEhPresident German Steel Federation

Dr.-Ing. Peter DahlmannExecutive Member of the Managing Board Steel Institute VDEh

Welcome and opening

The opening event at STAHL 2014 focuses on the future of industry in Europe as well as the challenges involved in main-taining competitiveness.

Given the tensions between regional economic development and European integration, Minister-President of the Saarland Kramp-Karrenbauer will discuss political strategies for industrial regions. She will examine the challenges facing such regions and the answers that politics can provide.

President of the employers’ associations Ingo Kramer will discuss industry’s future employment role in Europe. The pros-pects for business locations are also affected by demographic development. What status do education and qualifications have, and how can Europe cope with demographic change?

Prof. Dr. Dr. Di Fabio will speak about the growing significance of European institutions and the corresponding implications for national economic policies. With regard to the regulatory conflicts between ecology and economics, in particular, the question of how a sense of proportion and subsidiarity can be maintained within the EU is becoming increasingly important. What significance have economic and industrial policies in Europe? How can the successful industrial basis be secured?

The opening of the STAHL 2014 annual event will thus discuss industry’s perspectives in a European context.

Steels for the energy technology of the future

Energy production, energy generation and energy transportation

are fundamental topics of our time. Steel has and will have an

indispensable role here. Steel faces challenges regarding the

conventional production of energy as well as the production

of renewable energies but these can be met by steels’ many

capabilities. The material steel must cope with conflicting

combinations of properties - such as high toughness at very

low temperatures, or a high strength and creep resistance

at very high temperatures. This talk about steel will give an

overview from different perspectives, on how steel can meet

these challenges in the future. What requirements must the

material steel fulfill? How can steel producers reach these

requirements and stimulate new developments with modern

steels? These questions are an ongoing challenge for the steel

industry. A safe and environmentally friendly energy supply

requires sufficient qualification and an operation-related design

of existing materials, as well as new developments of steels and

their production parameters. The material steel can still provide

answers to the ever-growing demands in power engineering

and is therefore a fundamental material for use in this sector.

Efficient hot metal and steel production in Europe

Economical and competitive iron and steelmaking in Germany

and Europe is directly linked with the operation of modern,

efficient and high-performance plants and processes. This is

especially true for steel production via the coke plant-blast

furnace-converter route. To supply the blast furnaces with

the requested coke demand a new coke battery was built at

Duisburg Huckingen in Germany to double coke capacity at

this location. New technical developments were implemented

(e.g. blast furnace top closing devices) and plant technology

was improved (e.g. for coal injection) for hot metal produc-

tion in blast furnaces. Major investments in new plants were

done in the past years in the field of continuous casting also

to improve competitiveness. At the Peine site in Germany,

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH operates the Belt Casting Technology

demonstration plant, which enables near-net-shape casting

to produce HSD steels. The process gases of an integrated iron

and steel works are now used reasonable and sustainable, but

potentials still exist.

The future begins with intelligent plants

Internet technologies have fundamentally changed our world in

many ways. Further revolutionary developments in information

and communication technology are imminent. In future, pro-

duction plants will be connected to one another via complex

automation structures. They will be decentrally structured,

act autonomously, and communicate with one another in real

time. The aim is to further increase the flexibility, resource

efficiency and ergonomy of production. These developments

will be based on cyber-physical systems and the ‘internet of

things’. This scenario describes an accelerating development,

based on intelligent aggregates and plants that are increasingly

capable of autonomously providing process and product data.

We report on the challenges faced in building a blast furnace in

India, the construction and commissioning of a stainless steel

plant, the further development of radial forging technology, and

the demands and effects of Industry 4.0 in the steel industry.

Perspectives of industrial value networks

Germany’s economy recovered faster from the economic crisis

than that of most other countries in the world, mainly thanks

to its strong industrial chains. But now, however, it is par-

ticularly important to ensure that the competitive industrial

structures in Germany remain intact in future too. The weak

domestic investment activity in both the private and public

sectors are a particular cause for concern. Investments in the

energy-intensive primary industries have even fallen below

depreciations in recent years.

This Talk about steel will examine the connections between

investments and value-creation networks from several per-

spectives: What significance do investments in the steel in-

dustry have for the future capability of the industrial network?

How large is the investment gap in Germany (and in the EU)

and is the future competitiveness of the location threatened?

And finally: What form must an intelligent industrial policy

take in order to ensure sustainable investments and growth

in regional clusters?

High-strength steels with improved toughness - potentials for the lightweight construction

Thanks to intensive research and development, steel has nu-

merous unique application-specific properties. These can be

influenced by the targeted design of alloys and appropriately

adapted heat treatments. It is thus possible to specifically

adapt strength and toughness and many other properties to

the particular production step and the particular component

requirements. This awareness has in recent years led to the

development of numerous new high-strength and ultra-high-

strength steel grades with excellent toughness properties.

Against this background, developments based on the consistent

continuation of design- and material-related light construc-

tion – and the resultant resource-conservation aspects – are

examined in this Talk about steel.

What holistic, cost-efficient and sustainable material con-

cepts does steel offer for light construction? What trends

are becoming apparent? What demands will be made of the

material steel in future?

Innovative personnel work as an engine for modern Europe

Increased employability, a well-adjusted work-life balance, and

participative management systems are important factors in

innovative personnel management. Changing conditions are

increasingly forcing companies to turn away from short-term

personnel policy measures intended to increase competitiveness

and instead develop sustainable concepts.

This Talk about steel will discuss innovative instruments in

human resources work as well as new management methods

for increasing competitiveness in the steel industry. It will

examine the industry’s strategies for ensuring that the need

for skilled workers can be met, the age-oriented structuring of

workplaces, and the effects of demographic development on

the jobs situation. A newly developed model for the sustainable

protection of health and safety at work as a central component

of modern HR work will be introduced for the first time. The

European dimension will focus on the further development

of socio-political instruments in the EU Commission’s Action

Plan for the European steel industry.

Emissions trading and climate policy 2030: Setting the course for the industrial location Europe?

Next year’s climate summit in Paris is intended to create a

roadmap for a comprehensive international climate agreement

for after 2020. Discussions on a long-term energy and climate

concept have meanwhile started in Brussels and Berlin. The

future alignment of climate policy and emission trading is

of major importance for the international competitiveness

and investment prospects of the German and European steel

industry. What are the prospects of a successful international

agreement and should the European Union take on a pioneering

role? How can climate policy and emissions trading be effec-

tively structured whilst guaranteeing the competitiveness of

energy-intensive industries? These highly topical questions

will be discussed in these Talk about steel.

Plant capability and flexibility of rolling mills - response to customer demands

The close collaboration between the European steel industry

and its customers represents a major challenge for the future.

In terms of quality, delivery periods and innovative power, it

will only be possible for the industry to assert itself in global

competition given close connections with the processing industry.

In this Talk about steel producers of flat products focus on the

challenges resulting from specific customer requirements –

operation of the rolling mill and production plants, material

flow, logistics, and the Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

Three other presentations on the subjects of hot strip, cold
