with her. Within a few hours, we’d written our first song together as a trio.

Most of the album is written by all three of us together in one room, not the normal approach for bands of writers who usually write their own stuff and then pool it for working up arrangements.

We decided that the sound of the band should be the three of us working together, and it’s created what we call “the fourth in the room,” which is Blue Sky Riders.

Gary and Georgia had sung together and she would sing on his demos; they knew they had a blend, and I knew Gary and I had a blend, so it was only natural that the three of us would. We sound like siblings.

Over the decades, Loggins has reinvented himself as a singer, song-writer and guitarist, jazz musician, country rock singer and wildly successful soundtrack artist.

The creative magic of renewal is at work again in Kenny’s collabora-tion with two other renowned singer/songwriters, veterans Gary Burr and Georgia Middleman, both accomplished artists.

We caught up with Kenny Loggins to talk about songwriting, performing, and his newest passion, the band Blue Sky Riders.

Q. SO. BLUE SKY RIDERS. TELL ME ABOUT THE BAND.It started about five years ago. I went to Nashville to write a record that became How About Now, an exclusive for Target. I met Gary Burr, a Nashville Hall of Fame songwriter who’s written 14 number-one songs and who is an amazing collaborator.

Writing with him is easy. He’s very bright and fast and he used to be a lead singer for a band called Pure Prairie League. Our voices blended like brothers and I thought, “This is the kind of guy you’d start a band with.”

We talked about it briefly, and he went, “Um huh, that’s a funny idea.”

After I finished How About Now I went right into a children’s record for Disney, and every time I would get a song idea, I would write in the margin, “Save for Gary.” And I thought, “I think I’m supposed to be writing with Gary.”

So I called him up and said, “You

know, I am serious about this band thing. Not only that, but I’ve thought about it for a while now, and I think we need a third: a girl who’s a strong songwriter who can also sing.” I knew he’d know who it should be. I just felt it in my body. And he was sitting with her when I called him.

That was Georgia Middleman from San Antonio, an amazing songwriter, but also an incredible singer. I flew to Nashville to meet

Q. ALL OF YOU ARE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL SONGWRITERS AS WELL AS SOLO SINGERS. HOW DOES THAT HELP THE CREATIVE PROCESS?

It’s really helped; the whole success of Blue Sky Riders hinges on the fact that we respect each other, and we bring that respect into the writing room.

If we’re starting into something and one of us goes, “I don’t know. I don’t hear it. I don’t get it,” we don’t

try to badger that person into getting it. We just move on knowing that there’s another equally good idea hanging out there in the ether.

Sometimes we’ll write from the beginning of no idea at all as in “You’re Not The Boss Of Me.” We sat down and said, “Let’s write something from nothing.”

We all keep notes, and we’re all professional songwriters. One of us will present a lyric idea that you can hinge the body of the song on. Or maybe a little piece of melody will walk in — a couple of lines of melody that I dreamt the night before —and we’ll start with that.

We don’t have a shortage of ideas. The primary problem is we have too many.

Q. THE LAST SONG ON THE ALBUM, FINALLY HOME, IRONICALLY, IS THE FIRST SONG THAT YOU AND GARY WROTE, “HOW ABOUT NOW.” HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO MAKE THAT THE CLOSING STATEMENT OF THE DEBUT ALBUM?

‘‘ We DON’T HAVE A SHORTAGE of IDEAS. The primary problem is we have TOO MANY.’’

We still do it old school: I put each title on a different flash card, and then we’ll shuffle them until we see a sequence that feels like one song leads comfortably into the next. We want it to flow from top to bottom. “How About Now” just seemed to belong there.

Q. AT THE HARRIS CENTER YOU’RE GOING TO BE OPENING WITH BLUE SKY RIDERS, AND THEN COME RIGHT BACK AND DO YOUR SOLO SHOW. WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE BOTH THE HEADLINER AND THE OPENING ACT?

It’s kind of a trip. When we first started, the audience didn’t know that I was doing that, and many people didn’t recognize me as Kenny Loggins. They didn’t expect me to be out there with that opening act.

Sometimes the audiences would talk through us, and then when Gary and Georgia go out to sign albums

and sell t-shirts, people would be going up to them going, “Was that Kenny Loggins? Was he up there with you really?”

Q. WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT WHEN THEY COME TO THE SHOW?

Well, the first thing I want to impress upon the people is don’t come late. This is the opening act you want to see. This opening act is handpicked. So yeah, I want to impress on everybody that, “Please come in time to see the opening act, and I think you’re going to hear stuff you’ll like.”

I see it as a combination of the Loggins and Messina era that moves into Eagles and Fleetwood Mac and then even merges all the way into Lady Antebellum. So if you like that kind of stuff, come on in. I’m very proud of it.

Q. I KNOW IT’S ALWAYS A RISK WHENEVER YOU START DOING SOMETHING NEW. WHAT WAS IT LIKE THE FIRST TIME BLUE SKY RIDERS PERFORMED LIVE?

The first time we opened, it took about three songs to get the audience to go, “What the hell is this?” And then they sat up and started listening.

But the first time we played as a headlining act in a smaller venue, we were excited and pleasantly surprised to see that the audience was there for us.

I said, “Now, you know, I’m not going to do “Footloose” tonight,” and somebody yelled, “Blue Sky Riders!” And the audience started to applaud, and they told me straight out they were there for us.

That’s been a very exciting transition. I mean who gets to do this so many times in their career? This is my third time around.

Q. OVER THE YEARS, YOU’VE CREATED AN AMAZINGLY WIDE RANGE OF STYLES AND SOUNDS. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO? WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD?

Well, I went through a period where I was deep into the The Script. I just got a call from Pat Monahan of Train. He wants to write with me, and Charles and Lady A want to write with me.

I cover a lot of bases, and part of that is because of my big brothers – one was a big folk, country guy and one was a rock, R&B guy. So I had all

that as creative language from the time I was about 6, 7 years old on.

Right now, I’m loving what Blue Sky Riders is doing. I’m loving the country overtones to it. And I argue all the time, Gary and Georgia—Georgia being from Texas—she says we’re a country act. I see us as a country rock act. I don’t even know if that genre still exists.

People don’t really know what country rock is. It’s an ephemeral genre.

If you listen to the first Fleetwood Mac album, with Lindsey and Stevie, Lindsey was very country, and most of his guitar work is finger picking.

He was and is an amazing guitarist, and he invented a whole style of guitar playing that had just

barely come into the window. It still influences country artists.

I think the defining factor for country is, is it being sung by someone who has a Southern accent?

Q. WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A SONG A GREAT SONG? AND IS IT ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT YOU KNOW IT THE MOMENT YOU HEAR IT?

Hard to say. I think in pop culture, we define a great song by whether or not it was successful. I bet you can easily cull twenty songs off the top of your head right now that were not extremely popular but that you consider to be great songs.

I think it has to connect with the audience in an emotional way whether that’s a “Fourth of July, let’s get drunk and go crazy” kind of song or a song like “Celebrate Me Home” that evokes home and hearth. It has to touch the audience in some way that moves them and matters to them.

Q. YOU STARTED YOUR OWN RECORD LABEL WITH THE BAND. ANY SPECIAL MEANING BEHIND THE NAME “THREE DREAM RECORDS”?

It was sort of spun off “Dream,” the song “Too Old To Dream.” We’re acknowledging that the three of us each have our own dream with the start of this band. Gary wanted to be an artist but had to give it up because of his success in Nashville. Georgia, she had to give it up when she was 30. Being an artist for them was a dream that they’d given up on.

I think that’s the real story of the band – to reinvent yourself, to grab hold of your dream and go for it one more time.

Gary calls it “the cocktail hours of our lives.” They never thought they’d get another shot at this, and it’s exciting to see them up there.

The first time we played was at the Rutledge Theater in Nashville, and after the show, I said to Gary, “Did you have any idea how good Georgia is?” because Georgia stole the show. She stands in the center of the stage and just sparkles.

Q. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE BACK IN THE WHOLE STARTING-UP, CREATIVE-JUICE PROCESS?

I love the feeling of the writing and the recording and getting up on stage and playing for audiences, especially the audiences now that know the music and they’re happy to be there. It was harder in that first year when the album hadn’t come

out and nobody knew the music. Still, it was exciting.

The short answer is, it always feels exciting. There’s a lot of work to this that I had not anticipated like getting up at 5:00 in the morning to get to the radio station or TV show day after day while trying to conduct the tour and just running out of juice.

And people warned me, “You’re not 25 anymore. You’re not going to have the energy that it takes to break a new band in.” I have to say, some of that is true. It’s extremely difficult, and I’m not 25 anymore, but I want people to get that I love this from the bottom of my heart. We’re here for the long haul whatever that proves to be.

Three Stages transitions to its new name:

Harris Center for the ArtsAs it enters its third full season presenting at Folsom Lake College, Three Stages finds itself in an important identity transition.

Last August, the Los Rios Community College District Board of Trustees renamed the regional performing arts facility the “Harris Center for the Arts” in honor of retiring chancellor Brice Harris.

“We could think of no better way to honor Brice’s exceptional 16-year tenure as our chancellor,” said Los Rios Board president Ruth Scribner.

“We wouldn’t even have a regional arts center if it wasn’t for

Brice’s original vision. He was the first to see that the

Folsom/El Dorado Hills areas

were woefully lacking in performing arts venues and led the district in creating a facility capable of show-casing not only student work but national and international touring companies as well.”

Harris has been a life-long sup-porter of the arts and has served on numerous art boards including the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crocker Art Museum.

He began his educational career nearly 40 years ago as a theater arts professor.

“This is without a doubt the biggest honor of my life,” Harris said. “These past 16 years have given me the opportunity to work with the most amazing people in a truly wonderful district. I can’t say how much it means to have this beautiful

arts facility named in my honor. It is overwhelming.”

The name transition is well underway. The marketing materials and website have been updated. The signs on the side of the building were changed a few weeks ago.

Since it opened in February 2011, the center has proved to an audience hungry for arts performances that an exciting venue exists in the region east of Sacramento.

In its first year, the center drew roughly 110,000 attendees and attendance was up by 10 percent the following season, said Executive Director, Dave Pier. “Our schedule is so busy that it’s hard to find room for the Broadway shows,” he said.

Many shows have been sellouts and the number of presentations is growing.

In the first season the center presented 301 events. In 2012-13 that number rose to 390 and next year will have at least that many, Pier said.

Fans of the Big Bands, get ready to swing to the music which continues to inspire! The 1940’s musical review, In The Mood will be performing live at the Harris Center, August 27-29.

In The Mood began as a celebration of an unusual era in American music, the 1940s, also known as “the Swing era.”

On radio, in theaters and ballrooms, the big bands were drawing record crowds. Vocal groups and soloists sang a repertoire of great songs, and for the last time in the 20th century, the entire country shared a common popular music.

This body of song did much to sustain national morale during World War II, the pivotal event of the ‘40s. The USO (United Service Organizations) helped raise spirits with live entertainment for United States troops and their families.

As part of their commemora-tion of the 50th Anniversary of WWII, the National Archives in Washington, DC brought In The Mood to their audiences. The re-sponse was extraordinary, with crowds lining up for hours before curtain time. The engagement was twice extended.

In 1993, the Archives presented a repeat performance, outdoor on Constitution Avenue. Thousands attended, and many stayed to

dance the night away. As a result, In The Mood, in

affiliation with the USO, began a series of tours which played to audiences across the U.S.

In The Mood has also visited Europe and Canada and had the pleasure of performing to sold out audiences in New Zealand and Australia. Audiences in cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Brisbane, and Perth, among others, were thrilled to hear this great music and tribute to veterans from America and the war years.

In 1997 the show was selected as part of the entertainment for one of the Inaugural Balls at the 53rd Presidential Inauguration for President and Mrs. Bill Clinton.

The show’s upcoming 20th anniversary year will continue to portray the spirit of the music that moved the nation’s spirit for audiences throughout the United States and overseas. In The Mood is a testament to the music and lyrics of America that is timeless.

Much more than a concert, In The Mood presents a complete retro 1940s musical revue. The cast of nineteen features the blistering String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra and inexhaustible In The Mood Singers and Swing Dancers from New York. The show is a nostalgic journey through the music which guided a nation’s spirit towards

hope, promise and prosperity.The 1940’s was a time when

America was in tune with sentimental ballads and up-tempo Swing rhythms, where the waltz and foxtrot competed with the wild, acrobatic jitterbug, jive- and boogie woogie-crazed hepcats on the ballroom dance floor.

In The Mood recreates this defining era live on stage through sizzling choreography, sensational scats and romantic harmonies, sassy costumes and an hypnotic thirteen-piece Big Band, belting out an authentic score of over fifty unforgettable hits from Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra and the Andrews Sisters.

“Chattanooga Choo Choo,“ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (of Company B),” “In The Mood,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “Sing, Sing, Sing,“ “Senti-mental Journey” and so many more.

“Many of the arrangements were written by Vic Schoen, the conductor for the Andrews Sisters and Musical Director for Universal and Paramount Pictures. The songs are timeless and this production is as authentic as it gets,” said In The Mood Creator, Producer and Artistic Director Bud Forrest.

Leading the season is the October concert, entitled, Titans.

“Titans, in my mind, refers to something grand,” said Maestro Michael Neumann, music director and conductor of the Folsom Symphony.

“The Mahler symphony that we will be doing on that first concert is actually nicknamed ‘The Titan.’ It is of huge proportions. It’s a long, fairly lengthy piece that requires a very large orchestra. It’s a major piece of music.”

“And of course, any music by Wagner also has those kinds of magnificent proportions to it. ‘The Polovtsian Dances’ from Prince Igor,

is a very standard, well-known, well loved piece. And so ‘The Titan’ as sort of the nickname of this concert just seems extremely apropos. They’re all blockbusters.”

Next in the series is the December concert titled, The Music of Many Lands.

“There’s a variety of countries that are represented with the music which will be a wonderful variety for our audiences and for our orchestral players,” said Neumann

“There’s Italian music and Russian music and Romanian music and Viennese music and then, of course, music from Scotland. It’ll be wonderful. We’ll have several bag-

pipes and drums that will be joining us in that concert. So the variety of that will be very exciting and, I think, very fun for the audience. I think it’ll be something rather novel.”

In February, the series turns it attention to affairs of the heart with the concert, Romance!

“Certainly classical guitar is very romantic just by itself, and then we have a wonderful tenor, Robert Van, who will be joining us singing a few different songs of romance and love,” said Neumann

In addition the program includes Tchaikovsky’s “Movement #1 from the Serenade for Strings”, and Verdi’s Triumphal March from “Aida.”

“It’s very beautiful music and the mood will be that of romance and love. It’s very appropriate for that time of year,” Neumann added.

At the end of March comes the concert, Celebration of Spring.

“The concert comes around about Easter time. We will start with the “Russian Easter Overture,” which is a very beautiful, haunting piece that would be wonderful for the celebration of spring,” said Neumann.

“The Toy Symphony” by Leopold Mozart is going to be a real novelty because it requires some toy instruments. There are a toy drum, a toy trumpet, a nightingale, a ratchet and a cuckoo. We’re going to make it a surprise of who actually will be playing those parts because it won’t be members of the orchestra.”

“That should just be a fun event and one that the audience—as they

celebrate the beginning of spring— can smile and chuckle to each other about as we play that piece.”

Rounding out the concert will be Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7” with guest soloist, Tariq Masri, on bassoon.

The final concert in the series is called, Out of this World, and the music all aligns to this theme.

You’ll soar with the opening theme from Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” Wagner’s “Entry of the Gods Into Valhalla,” Shore’s “Fellowship of the Rings” suite, and selections from Holst’s “The Planets: (Mars, Venus and Jupiter),” “Superman,” and “Star Trek.”

“I am very excited about the upcoming season,” said Neumann. “I think there’s tremendous variety and something that will please just about everybody. And that’s the ultimate goal.”

A musical ripped from the headlines

Bye Bye Birdie is a Tony Award™ winning musical inspired by the phenomenon of Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army.

Originally titled Let’s Go Steady, the satire on American society is set in 1958. After a few false starts, director and choreographer Gower Champion asked for a rewrite of the story, saying he wanted “something more”.

“The ‘something more’ was right there in the newspaper. Rock-and-roll idol Elvis Presley was drafted into the army in September 1957 and soon left the US for eighteen months in Germany. This provoked a media circus that included Elvis giving a specially selected member of the Women’s Army Corps ‘one last kiss.’

After brainstorming, the writers “came up with the idea of a rock-and-roll singer going off to the army and its effect on a group of teenagers in a small town in Ohio. The name of the singer initially was ‘Ellsworth’, which was soon changed to ‘Conway Twitty’ before we discovered there was already a Conway Twitty who was threatening to sue us, and then, finally, ‘Conrad Birdie’.”

On Broadway, the original production was a Tony Award-winning success. It spawned a London production and several major revivals, a sequel, a 1963 film, and a 1995 television production.

Bye Bye Birdie played on Broadway for 607 performances. “An English Teacher,” “What Did I Ever See in Him?,” “Put on a Happy Face,” “One Boy,” “A Lot of Livin’ to Do,” “Kids,” “Rosie,” and “Spanish Rose” are now musical theatre classics.

El Dorado Musical Theatre is opening it’s production of Bye Bye Birdie at the Harris Center on Friday, July 12.

It features two alternating casts for each performance. This is a “Rising Stars” production which allows performers from 6-14 to be featured in their own full length production.

Thunder Valley’s fourth Summer Concert Series will run through September. The remarkable, 4,500 seat outdoor venue is constructed each year in the property’s parking lot and offers the highest quality of sound and acoustics.

Since 2010, hundreds of thousands of guests have had the opportunity to enjoy Lincoln’s cool

summer evenings while listening to their favorite artists.

The Outdoor Amphitheater at Thunder Valley offers general admission bleacher seating that surrounds the main stage as well as lower level floor seating. Beverages and snacks are available throughout the venue during the concerts.

In addition to concerts, the flexibility of the venue allows it to accommodate a variety of boxing matches with a live outdoor arena.

This year, for the first time in over 10 years, ESPN Friday Night Fights will visit Northern California to broadcast World Championship Boxing live from the Outdoor Amphitheater on Friday, July 26.

Unique to this year’s series, Thunder Valley Casino Resort has partnered with Sacramento Mobile Food to offer guests the chance to

enjoy a myriad of great local food options.

For each concert, Sacramento Mobile Food invites up to eight featured food truck vendors to sell specialty food offerings. All food trucks open two hours before each show and are located both inside and outside of Thunder Valley’s Outdoor Amphitheater.

Antoniy Kakamakov was born in 1985 in a family of professional violinists. He began studying the guitar at the age of ten with Milena Valtcheva in his native country of Bulgaria. In 1997 he won first prize in the junior division of the International Classical Guitar Festival and Competition in Sinaia, Romania. The following year he won two first prizes in the junior divisions of the international guitar competitions in Kraiova, Romania and Assenovgrad, Bulgaria. In 1999 he was awarded full scholarship to study guitar at the Idyllwild Arts Academy where his teachers were Terry Grave and Michael Kudirka. He received his BA degree in 2007 from the San Francisco Conservatory where he studied with David Tanenbaum.
