UPDATE 1 16 April 2015 Stage 2 tunnel improvements begin Mt Victoria Tunnel on State Highway 1 is a vital link in the Wellington region’s transport network and is being upgraded to ensure it continues to operate effectively. It is appropriate to make these changes now given the tunnel’s age and the advancements made in tunnel engineering since it was built more than 80 years ago. This upgrade is the second of three planned and will run from late April 2015 to mid-2016. Work in the tunnel will be done overnight from Sundays to Thursdays to minimise the impact on traffic and every effort will be made to ensure construction noise is kept to a minimum. Traffic will be diverted through Newtown and a shuttle or escort through the tunnel will be provided for pedestrians and cyclists. Memorial Park Alliance is conducting the upgrade on behalf of the NZ Transport Agency. Works beginApril: Recent work on Mt Victoria Streets.

The diagram below shows where 6 trial pits were opened to examine existing underground services and where 5 underground service access chambers were installed. This work has prepared the way for tunnel communications ducts to be installed under the footpath from Cambridge and Kent Terraces, Hania, Ellice, Brougham and Paterson Streets to the Mt Victoria Tunnel in the near future.

28 April – 4 June: Strengthening the exterior slopes above the entrances to the tunnel.

Strengthening will require night work and tunnel closures during the six-week period to 4 June. This work will impact on traffic and, for safety reasons, vehicles will be diverted off State Highway 1 through a signposted route via Newtown. Dates will be advised closer to the time. A shuttle or escort through the tunnel will be provided for pedestrians and cyclists.

A three-stage upgradeStage 1: Began May 2011, completed late 2012 and included improving earthquake safety, installing a temporary safety platform and upgrading fire systems.

Stage 2: April 2015 – Mid 2016 night closures 5 times a week.

Stage 3: Will be coordinated with the Mt Victoria Tunnel Duplication project. Planning is underway for a second tunnel to help reduce traffic congestion.

BackgroundMt Victoria Tunnel opened in 1931, connecting Hataitai and the eastern suburbs with inner city Wellington. It is 623 metres long and has two lanes, one in each direction. More than 45,000 cars per day travel through the tunnel and share the space with pedestrians and cyclists who use an elevated walkway along the northern wall.

The tunnel’s original systems and components were appropriate when they were installed. However, more modern equipment will improve the operation, environment and safety in the tunnel.
