Who We Are

UN Youth Australia is a national youth-led charity that aims to build the

people’s movement for the United Nations through the education andempowerment of young Australians.

We seek to provide young Australians with a global education, one that

gives them a deep knowledge of the social and political problemsconfronting the world and the skills to address them. We believe that youngpeople are not just Australia’s future leaders; they lead now. We act toexpand the opportunities for young people to make a difference in theircommunities.

UN Youth Australia runs a large range of national and local programs

designed to provide this empowerment through education, with a focus onstudents aged 15 to 19. Within Australia, we organise a National YouthConference, Evatt (a national Model UN competition), Perspective (a youth journal of international affairs), and a wide variety of state and territoryevents. Internationally, we coordinate educational tours of Europe, EastTimor, and New Zealand for secondary school students and a tour of theUSA for tertiary students.

We also work directly with the Australian Government to promote youthempowerment. We are a founding member of the Australian Youth Forum

and frequently make submissions to Senate inquiries on topics relevant toyouth. Most importantly, in collaboration with the Department of ForeignAffairs and Trade, we nominate an Australian Youth Representative to theUnited Nations General Assembly, who joins the Australian Delegation to

the UN each year as an accredited diplomat.

We are a federal, grassroots organisation run entirely by young volunteersunder 25 years old from across Australia. Our more than 500 members arecommitted volunteers who act on the basis of goodwill, giving shape andhope to our future.

UN Youth Northern Territory was formed to enable young people in theNorthern Territory to have an understanding and appreciation of thechallenges faced by people across the world.

UN Youth realises this ambition in a number of ways including conferences, school workshops, the School Ambassadors Program (SAP), Evatt NT, asimulated security council competition, NT Road Trip, which engages and

gives a voice to a large number of rural, lower SES, and indigenous Youthacross the Northern Territory, and we conduct social events to encourage

an inclusive environment for the discourse of educational programs andevents centred around global issues.

UN Youth Northern Territory facilitators are peer-to-peer educators, each ofwhom has received extensive facilitation training. We believe each youngperson has the potential to understand and exercise their civic rights on alocal, national and global level and demonstrate this through our programs. We value informal education, giving students a different style of learning

based on interactivity and understanding to supplement their factualknowledge.

What is theSchool Engagement Program?

UN Youth is a firm supporter of the SACE curriculum for Stage 2 Legal

Studies, as such the program we present has been designed to complementand expand upon practical outcomes of the knowledge obtained

throughout the course.

Engaging with the four key topics of the Stage 2 Legal Studies course (theAustralian Legal System, Constitutional Government, Lawmaking, and J

ustice Systems) this education program will assist students in expandingtheir knowledge of the subject. With this program UN Youth NorthernTerritory will deliver eight sessions based around key points in the Stage 2Legal Studies subject outline.

These eight workshops will be rolled out sequentially throughout the Stage

2 school year, with a heavier delivery in semester one comparitively tosemester two.

The eight workshops that UN Youth will deliver under the SEP are:

1. Human Rights

In this workshop UN Youth will assist students in evaluating modern humanrights issues, their scope, and assist them in understanding the complexityof the challenges we face. This will assist students in assessing their Inquirytopic by providing them with an interactive medium in which to explorelegal and multinational conflicts.

2. Public Speaking

Aligning with UN Youth Australia’s key aims to promote advocacy amongyouth, this workshop is designed to empower students to speak up onissues, participate in discussion and increase their confidence assisting them

in their presentation of speeches both inside and outside the classroom.

3. Legal Systems (Values)

This workshop assesses the values inherent in our legal system, discussingvalues such as natural justice, the importance of social order, as we ask

students what it means to have a ‘just’ society.

4. Constitutional Workshop (Constitutional Systems)

A highly practical workshop, this session involves students in crafting theirown constitution. Using this as a tool UN Youth explains the basics ofConstitutional Systems, key sections of our own Constitution, and comparesinternational systems of Constitutional Governance using examples such as

codified constitutions (France and the United States) and un-codifiedconstitutions (such as New Zealand and England)

5. Constitutional Workshop (IPS)

Through the use of an Interactive Problem Solver (IPS) students will be ableto explore the rights of indigenous people in the Constitution. Withcontinued social debate about changes to the constitution this workshopwill likely prove vital when assessing any examination questions on therights of indigenous peoples as explained in the constitution.

6. Law Making (Mock Parliament)

To fully explore Lawmaking both in principle and in practice students will be

subjected to a mock parliament, drafting legislation and then enacting itthrough proper parliamentary procedure (or as closely as can be modelled).By engaging students in this process followed by a discussion on the stagesof a bill students are able to see how a bill is formed, and how it is executedin a demonstration which removes confusion from the complex process.

7. Human Rights (JCC)

Through the use of a Joint Cabinet Crisis (JCC) students will be exposed to

a hypothetical situation which they must resolve. Drawing on logical

deduction and diplomacy this exercise is used to develop critical thinking, compromise and helps students to justify responses to scenarios helpingthem develop logical proof.

8. Justice Systems

Including a visit to the supreme and magistrates court this workshop isbased around explaining the hierarchy of courts in context.

Expected Outcomes

These workshops are designed especially to assist students completing theStage 2 Legal Studies course in their practical outcomes.

Primarily we aim towards four key areas of improvement

  • Public Speaking & Confidence

  • Advocacy  • Critical Analysis  • An increased understanding of legal terminology and practices

Firstly the program aims to increase the confidence of its participants. UN

Youth NT believes that this will assist students in delivering oralcomponents of the Legal Studies course, allow for an interactive experience

inside the classroom, and provide positive educational outcome from anincreased ability to pose questions during classroom discussion.

Secondly UN Youth believes in the promotion and active voice of youth inthe community as advocates for positive social change. Through ourworkshops we shape students to be able to present cases based on meritsand social indicators in the community allowing them to link thehypothetical scenario to what is happening just outside their door.

Thirdly we aim to achieve a great ability of critical analysis in participants.By exposing them to a number of mediums and scenarios in which theymust come to beneficial conclusions we motivate students to develop

analysis and deduction skills based on the information provided.

Lastly we aim to develop students understanding of terminology andconcepts through continued and varied practical demonstrations. Forexample students who participate in the Mock Parliament workshop orConstitution workshop will have a greater understanding of legal terms inthese areas and when it is appropriate to use these terms.

Ultimately the practical outcomes of this program tie in with the key aims ofthe Stage 2 Legal Studies curriculum assisting students in achieving the

very best possible.
