Editors WaffleDoesn’t time fly by? It seems no time at all when the last issue of Stag Party was completed and sent out to all HCAAC members, and now here we are in a brand new year with another issue, and with another season of motor sport to look forward to, whether competing, marshalling, spectating or simply watching on TV. I hope you all had a very enjoyable Christmas and New Year break, and are now all raring to go with whatever motoring plans you may be making.

In this issue of Stag Party we have all the award winners from 2010, with points totals and trophies. Special congratulations must go to Mitchell Perry, whose 93 points just pipped Jonathan Gibbs by two points to take the top honours and the Cook Trophy, awarded ‘for the most successful competitor in all events open to HCAAC members’, in his ultra-competitive Renault Clio 182 Cup. In recognition of Mitchell’s success in 2010 we are please to feature him in action on the front cover of this edition of Stag Party, taken at the October sprint at Debden. Well done, Mitchell.

Jonathan didn’t end the season empty-handed, however, as his 91 points gained him the Jarvis Trophy, awarded to the ‘most successful competitor in races, sprints and hillclimbs open to HCAAC members’, plus he took home the Salmon Trophy (for most HCAAC success at Debden) for good measure. And a very close third, on 89 points, was Carl Warnell driving the Toyota MR2 he shares with dad Keith. Carl’s exploits featured in last October’s Stag Party when he kindly penned the article on ‘Sprinting at Debden’.

Also featured in this issue is the 2011 Calendar of Events open to HCAAC members, the Challenge Trophy rules, plus details from Chris Deal of the 2011Hangar 111 AEMC Sprint Championship. All good stuff and guaranteed to whet your appetites.

Starting with this issue and, hopefully, the first in a regular slot in future editions of Stag Party, is a profile on the Formula Vauxhall Lotus (FVL) single seater campaigned by Tony Staines. With such a diverse array of competition machinery out there, we felt that you would be interested to know more about them, so here goes with the first of many, we hope. Grateful thanks to Tony and Derek for taking the time out to put the article together, reproduced later in this issue. And if any of you out there feel like sharing info about your vehicle with the rest of us (whilst not giving away any secrets!), please let the editor know. Technical facts and a photo or two, some competition history if relevant, info about build or restoration details etc, all will be welcome. Even just the basic facts will do, as we can put it all together for you.

By the time you all read this the 2010 Awards Dinner will have come and gone. See later for a report on the evening, and photos of the award winners. A great evening was had by all who attended, and congratulations to all who helped to make it a memorable occasion. Thanks also to Howard Dawson who kindly lent his immaculate (and valuable) Ford GT to sit on show outside the front door of The Mill Hill Golf Club all evening!

Sincerely,

Trevor Scarborough

Odds & Ends

Monthly Club Night – ‘Noggin and Natter’

Our once a month club get-together has now moved from the Rose and Crown in Essendon to –

The John Bunyan, Colemans Green Lane, Wheathampstead, Herts. AL4 8ES

This will be as from April, and will be held on the FIRST WEDNESDAY of each month from 8.00pm, so we hope to see you there on 6th April and successive months through the year.

The John Bunyan is a very pleasant traditional English pub, serving reasonably priced pub grub. It is not entirely new to HCAAC, as it was the regular venue for club nights a few years ago. It’s a McMullens house, and Sally and son Anthony who run it are very friendly hosts, and offer a warm welcome to all – which extends to the open log fire they keep running most of the year in the main bar.

To kick off the new venue we shall be having a quiz on mainly motoring matters, so please make a date in your diary and come along to ‘The Bunyan’ for a drink and a chat and maybe a bite to eat on the 6th.

New Club Events Secretary

We are pleased to announce the appointment of a new events secretary to take over the daunting task of organizing the HCAAC competition events. His name is Pete Walters and is immediately recognizable from his shiny dome, white beard and unforgettable laugh (sounds a bit like Santa Claus!).

Pete takes over the mantle from Tony Staines, who has filled the role magnificently for many years. On behalf of the committee and all club members we thank Tony for his unstinting work, whilst at the same time welcoming Pete Walters on board.

Pete has had his fair share of competitive motor sport activity in the past, probably his most successful culminating in a fine win at Mondello Park in the Letchworth Roofing Ford Capri 3-litre back in 1984. As one of the ‘Gerry Marshall set’ back in those halcyon days of saloon car mayhem, he was awarded the soubriquet of ‘Creeping Jesus’ by Marshall himself (the reasons for which have been long forgotten, or more likely remain unprintable!), which soon became abbreviated to ‘CJ’, by which eponym Pete is universally referred to even to this day.

CJ’s first track car was a Mazda RX3, but due to an altercation with the bank at Coram bend, Snetterton, required a bit of bodywork renovation (he rolled it!). This was achieved quite simply by cutting off the entire back of the car from about midships, and grafting on the back of another

Page 4: Stag Party Feb 2011 Volume 504

RX3. To the casual eye this was virtually undetectable, unless you happened to take at look at both sides of the car. The left view showed the sponsor name of ‘Demon Tw’, while the right hand side simply said ‘eeks’ (think about it).

Pete can be contacted on 01438 880484 or E-mail [email protected]

Steel and Aluminium Fabrications

If anyone has a need for some professional sheet metal fabrication, tube welding or other similar metal work, there is a company in Luton which does this sort of thing. We stress that this is not any form of official HCAAC recommendation or approval, and there are no doubt other companies around which some of you know and have used, but they have undertaken three small jobs for your editor, which they have completed satisfactorily, on time and reasonably priced. The latest has been a nicely fabricated aluminium firewall for the MGB GT.

If anyone is interested the company is –

Border Engineering, Unit 2, Moreton Park, Moreton Road South, Luton, Beds

Contact Stirling Beer on 01582 415933 or email [email protected]

Hard Surface Runway Available for Hire

David Gibbs has brought to our attention that a farmer at Gosfield, near Braintree has available for hire a concrete runway which may be used for vehicle testing. This sounds like a useful place to do some pre-season setup work etc on competition vehicles, and at a cost of £50 per day is very reasonably priced. For more details about this please contact David Gibbs on 020-8529-0616, or e-mail [email protected]

Caption CompetitionIn the last issue of Stag Party we asked for suggestions as to what might be being said in the cover photo of the Scarborough Family Lotus Elise, taken at the October 2010 Debden sprint. In October’s Stag Party we mentioned that only one response had been received for the July Caption Comp, this time we went one less and received none at all. Oh well, some you win and some you lose! Here’s what the editor thought anyway.

‘Khan Busby, you say. Mmm, yes, I think he might wake up if I jab him with my elbow’.

As this feature has been so well received (!) and we haven’t got another suitable picture at the moment, we’ll give the Caption Competition a miss for this issue.

2010 HCAAC Awards Dinner

The traditional end of season HCAAC Awards Dinner was held at the Mill Hill Golf Club on Saturday 26th February. We had a very good attendance with over 70 members and guests, who enjoyed an excellent three course meal. The walls of the hallowed club dining room had been adorned with some excellent poster photos of members and cars, to lend an automotive flavor to the event. Service was smooth and professional, with waiters moving deftly between diners as conversations ebbed and flowed round the tables.

David Gibbs welcomed us all to the evening as we took our seats at the tables prepared for us, and the meal was soon under way. And very good it was too, I have to say.

Following the meal, and before the awards were presented, Gordon Stubberfield showed a very entertaining video of ‘sprinting at Debden’ with many club members and their cars featuring, plus some super in-car footage prompting comments such as ‘Blimey, I didn’t realize that was a left-hander’. Good stuff, Gordon, and thanks very much. The accompanying music sound track gave an added aural depth to the great visuals.

Club President Graham Scarborough gave a short address to welcome everyone and to thank all those who had contributed to making the evening the success it had been thus far. He expressed the hope that we would all share his enthusiasm for the season ahead, and made the very pertinent point that clubs such as HCAAC form the bed-rock of motor sport in this country, not just from a purely competition point of view, but equally highlighting the camaraderie that accompanies such ‘grass-roots’ involvement.

On to the awards themselves, and Steve Muir acted as MC, with Lindy Scarborough handing out the trophies. As each recipient was presented with his or her trophy a fanfare blast emanated from Gordon’s trusty computer, and a picture of their car was flashed up on to the screen. Timing was, more or less, spot on, and, with David Gibbs taking a snap of each award winner, the whole proceeding was carried out to a standard that Jonathan Ross could only dream about at the BAFTA’s.

A well-subscribed raffle followed, and the evening wound down with people intermingling, chatting and relaxing, and probably doing a bit of imbibing as well! Here are just some of the award winners. Apologies to those not featured here, but all the pictures can be found on the HCAAC web-site.

Your CarsWelcome to this, the first in a series, all about you and the cars you drive.

No 1. 1988 Formula Vauxhall Lotus campaigned by Tony Staines

Debden Sprint – May 2008

The well-known single seater sprinted by Tony Staines is from a one-make series which first saw the light of day in 1988.

Formula Vauxhall Lotus (FVL) – Formula Opel Lotus on the Continent, were produced in Bicester by Reynard to a design agreed with Lotus/General Motors.

For ease of repair/component replacement, the chassis comprises two aluminium honeycomb planks (the sides of the structure) bolted together with

* a cast aluminium bulkhead in front of the driver’s feet* the engine/transmission unit at the rear* tubular front and rear roll hoops (forming the driver safety cell)* aluminium/plywood flat floor

Whilst the basic design remained unchanged, over the years the specifications developed with various induction systems providing 150-175 hp and stiffer planks and different wings being introduced.

The engine is the 2 Litre twin cam “Red Top” from GM as fitted to the 16v Astra GTE in the late eighties as well as some Cavaliers and Calibras. With a dry sump, this is mated to a version of the Mk9 Hewland gearbox with a clutch housing which also contains the engine oil reservoir and suspension mounting points.

Page 13: Stag Party Feb 2011 Volume 504

Whilst retaining standard engine internals - crank/rods/flywheel, Tony’s car has been developed with throttle bodies and a larger exhaust system to give around 200 bhp. Accordingly, wider wheels and tyres have also been fitted.

By more modern standards the power is modest and the total weight (around 500kg) on the high side. But the rigid chassis provides good, balanced handling and the engine power/torque characteristic is quite smooth. A good level of driver safety is also a plus factor. Performance is good enough to belong, for example, to that select group that completes our Debden sprint circuit under the 60 sec. barrier (assuming reasonable weather!)

Utilizing a fairly common production engine keeps costs low – for maintenance, or, if necessary, replacement.

Tony’s car suffered a mishap a few years ago at Lydden Hill. Despite being virtually fully enclosed, somehow a pebble contrived to get into the engine compartment and snapped the drive belt to the dry-sump pump. Friction welding was just about complete within half a lap or so!

What would have been an almost insurmountable problem with something more exotic (e.g. Hart) was sorted with the purchase of a 1989 Cavalier GSI (no MOT) for £100 (many components, less engine, were sold later recouping more than £100!). The basic engine is still doing service in the race-car today-now protected by an ignition cut-out set at a pre-determined oil pressure.

The car is currently being prepared for the new season – Let’s hope it’s a long, hot, dry one for everybody- but especially those in open wheel single seaters!

Who, What, Where, When?Answer to “Who, What, Where, When” in last issue of Stag Party (503). Not too difficult to identify the car and driver (and, by association, the passenger). The venue is a little bit trickier but anyone who knows British race circuits will recognize it. The ‘when’ might be more of a problem though, which perhaps may explain why we got no entries for this one.

Answers

Who: Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson

What: 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SLR

Where: Silverstone, British GP, Parade of Champions

When: 1967

And if any of you out there has any suitable pics for “Who, What, Where, When” please send them to the editor at [email protected], and we

will make it a regular feature.

THE 2011 HANGAR 111 AEMC SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP

As received from Chris Deal, co-ordinator of the above championship, and reproduced here to invite any interested HCAAC members to take part.

Do You Feel The Need For Speed Without Getting A Ticket?

We have a class to cater for all types of vehicles, and the overall championship is decided on class position. There are twenty rounds, from mid-March to late October, counting towards the championship, using venues at Abingdon, Curborough, Debden, Goodwood, Hethel, Honington, Mallory Park, North Weald and Woodbridge. The best 10 scores count. Event supplementary regs. will be sent to each registered competitor, so no need to chase around for regs.

This year is more about evolution rather than revolution with slight tweaks to rules to make them clearer and some extra classes to encourage more competitors. We have introduced two classes for 'Standard Car' in the Road-Going category running on list 1A tyres only; changed the capacity break point in the Racing Cars category and introduced a class for Formula Fords. As always don't forget the essentials like a timing strut and your overalls and helmet. If you are looking to buy new overalls check the Blue Book as some of the specs are changing for 2012.

The Blue Book has many categories, but we have been able to amalgamate some of them otherwise there would have been so many classes that there would likely have been only one car in some classes. The resulting categories are Road-Going Series/Specialist Production Cars; Modified Series/Specialist Production Cars; Sports Libre Cars and Racing Cars.

Now for a few specifics for each category -

A – Road-Going Series/Specialist Production Cars

Road-Going Series Production Cars are where the production numbers exceed 1,000 per annum and Road-Going Specialist Production Cars are where production numbers are between 20 and 1,000 chassis per annum. All cars must compete in road legal condition, with reverse gear operable at all times. Seat belts must be at least 3 point; tyres can be from either list 1A or list 1B and only pump fuel can be used. As for engines Road-Going Series Production Cars the cylinder block and cylinder head must remain in the original position and be of the original type and material. Induction is free, as are exhaust systems, but must remain in the same capacity class as the original car or the manufacturer’s specified option for the model and engine. For Road-Going Specialist Production Cars, the cylinder block and head must be of a make and type produced in at least 1,000 identical units originally available through the normal commercial channels of a land vehicle manufacturer. For details on 'Standard Cars' see Appendix 2 cars below.

There are classes up to 1400cc, 1401 to 2000cc and over 2000cc all of which exclude 4 wheel drive cars and Appendix 1 cars. 4 wheel drive cars retain their own class.

Appendix 1 cars have two classes up to 1700cc and over 1700cc, examples of Appendix 1 cars are – Caterham; Westfield; Sylva; Fisher; Lotus 7, Elise, Exige and 340R; Vauxhall 220; X-Bow and similar types/derivatives of these cars.

Appendix 2 cars have two classes up to 1600cc and 1601 to 2000cc, restricted to two wheel drive using list 1A tyres. Cars are to be to manufacturers original specification, with modifications limited to safety items, along with replacement wheels and aftermarket exhausts (not manifold), no other modifications (body, brakes, suspension, transmission or engine etc) will be permitted.

Page 16: Stag Party Feb 2011 Volume 504

B - Modified Series/Specialist Production Cars

A Modified Limited Production Car is one which must have been originally available through the normal commercial channels of the manufacturer in quantities of not less than 1000 vehicles within 12 consecutive months (vehicles produced in lesser quantities may be admitted subject to the manufacturer obtaining approval from MSA). Modified Specialist Production Cars must have been originally available through the normal commercial channels of the manufacturer in quantities of not less than 20 chassis within 12 consecutive months.

All vehicles in this category must have roll cages fitted, at least 4 point seat belts, only pump fuel is permitted. After clarification by the MSA reverse gear is not required to be operable in this category.

The engine block must be externally identifiable as that fitted to the original model or specified option and it must remain in the same capacity class as the original car or the manufacturer’s specified option for the model and engine. Additionally engines fitted to Modified Specialist Production Cars must be of a make and type produced in at least 1,000 identical units and fitted to a vehicle originally available through the normal commercial channels of a land vehicle manufacturer. Numerous modifications are permitted, for details see full guidance notes or MSA Year Book.

Classes are up to 1400cc, 1401cc to 2000cc and 2001cc and over.

C – Sports Libre Cars

The following sub categories are allowed – Special Saloons, Hill Climb Supersports Chassis Cars, Sports Racing Cars, Group B Sports Cars (list of eligible cars is held by MSA), GT1 Sports Cars and World Rally Cars.

Roll cages are required and you will need at least a 6 point seat belt. Reverse gear is not needed in this category. Methanol may be used instead of pump fuel. There are various other restrictions including some relating to FIA regulations, please see MSA Year Book.

There are two classes up to 1800cc and 1801cc and over.

D – Racing Cars

Roll cages are required and you will need at least a 6 point seat belt. Reverse gear is not needed in this category. Methanol may be used instead of pump fuel. The various dimensions are shown in the MSA Year Book. The requirements for this category have not changed, but the class split has changed to 1100cc. We also have an additional class for Formula Ford racing cars. This year it is open to such vehicles of all capacities and ages, but each car must run to the championship regulations applicable for the year of manufacture.

I hope that helps explain the categories in Sprinting this year. Should you have any questions or wish to take part in the championship please get in touch. More detail can also be found on the AEMC web site: www.aemc.org.uk

A Bit of HistoryIn the October 2010 issue of Stag Party we introduced ‘A Bit Of History’, to allow some of us more senior members to indulge in a bit of nostalgia, the kind of reminiscences which start with ‘Do you remember back in ……’ in the bar at Noggin and Natters and the like. This sparked a few emails in response to a couple of items referring to HCAAC sprints and trials back in the early fifties, which we are delighted to reproduce here.

The Price Special

Lionel Reeves recalls seeing the Price Special, as mentioned in a review of the HCAAC Winter Cup Trial in 1952, driven by HCAAC member D.W.Price, which had a 3622cc Ford V8 engine. Price had a glass company located behind what was then the Savoy cinema in Enfield.

The Triangle Special

According to a couple of books by C.A.N. May called ‘Wheelspin’, dealing with pre-war trialling, and ‘More Wheelspin’ which covers trials from 1947 to 1949, there comes more information about the Triangle Special of E (Ted) Lloyd Jones, also reviewed by Motor Sport at the HCAAC North London Speed Trials in 1952, where he recorded FTD.

Apparently Lloyd-Jones built the first Triangle Special in the late 30’s for trials. It had a shortened Lea-Francis Hyper chassis fitted with an MG K3 body, and supercharged Lea-Francis engine. Later it was fitted with a Ford V8 motor, and then was sold to Geoffrey Mansell. Lloyd-Jones then built another special in the late 30’s. He ran the Triangle Garage in Birmingham, hence the name of his home-brewed specials.

And, following this up a bit more, we have found a thread on the Nostalgia Forum on Autosport’s Bulletin Board, which suggests that the Triangle ‘Flying Saucer’ special was built by Lloyd-Jones post-war. It was apparently based on a wartime Daimler Dingo scout car chassis and was fitted with a 21 litre Rolls Kestrel aero engine (yes, that reads 21 litre) – it must have been a truly fearsome device! And according to Steve Muir’s excellent history of HCAAC ‘A Century of Club Motor Sport’, Lloyd-Jones ran the 21-litre Triangle Flying Saucer at the HCAAC 1953 Ramsgate sprint, presumably the same vehicle as at the 1952 sprint reported by Motor Sport that year. We believe this car no longer exists, but it must have been one heck of a hairy beast! Now all we need is a photograph.

Page 18: Stag Party Feb 2011 Volume 504

500cc Racing

Lionel was a member of the 500 Club and regularly marshalled for them at Brands Hatch and elsewhere. He remembers watching many 500cc drivers who went on to become household names, such as Stirling Moss, Peter Collins and Stuart Lewis-Evans. He also spectated at trials and (when needed) gave a helping push to cars struggling to crest the muddy hills.

Another name mentioned in the October ‘A Bit Of History’ article was D.Parker. This was the well-known Don Parker who Lionel remembers well. He originally drove the Parker Special, one of the few ‘one-off’ specials to be competitive with the Cooper 500’s. Parker then campaigned a Kieft, the prototype built by Ray Martin for Moss and Parker, with Don doing much of the final assembly. This car was always quicker than the production models, and has now been beautifully restored to concours standard. Lionel recalls seeing it again at Brands Hatch just a few years ago where it led the race until it ran out of fuel!

(Many thanks to Lionel Reeves for much of the above detail)
