Stafford House School of English is recognised by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) as a Highly Trusted Sponsor. Both schools operate under one licence, allowing students to take advantage of both locations while studying with us. Visa Nationals have three choices when applying to study in the UK, all involve applying in the student’s home country.

EU StudentsNo Visa required. Standard student application process.

Student Visitor Visa (SVV) / Child Visitor Visa (CVV)The SVV is available to any Visa or Non-Visa Nationals that would like to come to the UK to study for up to six months. Visa Nationals must apply in their country before visiting the UK, whilst Non-Visa Nationals can receive the SVV upon arrival in the UK.

A Student Visitor Visa may be a useful option for you if you are:• Coming to study in the UK for 6 months or less• Do NOT have CEFR Level B1 of English• Not going to need to extend your Visa in the UK

A Student Visitor Visa is NOT a suitable option for you if:• You are going to be studying a course lasting more than 6 months• You may need to extend your stay in the UK

Extended Student Visitor Visa (ESVV)English Language students wishing to attend exclusively English language courses can apply for an Extended Student Visitor Visa allowing them to stay for up to 11 months. The Extended Student Visitor Visa is only available to applicants outside the UK and over 18 years old at the time of application.

If you are a ‘Non-Visa National’ who does not normally need a Visa to study for up to 6 months, you must apply in your country for the extended Visa if you wish to take a longer English language course.

The Extended Student Visitor Visa’s other requirements, entitlements and restrictions are the same as those for the current student visitor route.

An Extended Student Visitor Visa may be a useful option for you if you are:• Coming to study in the UK for up to 11 months• Are NOT able to study a course at CEFR Level B1 or above• Not going to need to extend your Visa in the UK.

An Extended Student Visitor Visa is NOT a suitable option for you if:• You are going to be studying a course lasting more than 11 months• You may need to extend your stay in the UK.

Terms Explained: Visa NationalsA person who is a national or citizen of certain countries and will always require a Visa to come to the United Kingdom. The countries or territories are listed in Appendix 1 of the immigration rules.

Non-Visa NationalsA non-Visa national is a national or citizen of any country that is NOT listed in appendix 1 of the UKBA immigration rules (nationals of countries listed in appendix 1 are Visa Nationals). A non-Visa national does not need a Visa to come to the United Kingdom for less than six months, unless it is a requirement of the immigration category under which they are entering. A non-Visa national coming to the UK for more than six months will need a Visa.

Visas

8

This Visa allows students to stay in the UK for extended periods of study and must be initially applied for outside the UK. Students have the right to extend their Visa while in the UK, and may be able to benefit from free health care whilst studying in the UK.

To be eligible for an Adult Student Visa under the Tier 4 Points Based System they must obtain a total of 40 points. To gain the necessary points they should be accepted on a course at a school that:

• is accredited by an accrediting body approved by the UK Border Agency. Stafford House is accredited by Accreditation UK, a joint scheme run by the British Council and English UK and is recognised by the UKBA.

• is on the UKBA Register of Sponsors. Stafford House School of English is a Highly Trusted Sponsor on the Register of Sponsors.

Students will score 30 points for having a valid confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS). When students apply, they must:

• Write the CAS reference number on their application form and include a copy of the CAS statement• Provide the documents mentioned in the ‘Evidence Used to Obtain Offer’ section in the CAS.

For pure language courses, this would normally be a SELT (IELTS/TOEFL test) certificate as listed in the UKBA’s SELT list (http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/applicationforms/new-approved-english-tests.pdf)

How does a student show that they have sufficient funds?Students will score 10 points if they provide evidence that they have enough money to pay their course fees and living costs. They must show evidence that:

• have paid all or part of their course fees and (if relevant) accommodation fees to their Tier 4 sponsor;

and/or

• are receiving official financial sponsorship; and/or• have enough money to cover their remaining course fees and living costs, if any.

Full details can be found on UKBA website at: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/adult-students/evidence/money/

How does a student show that they meet the required minimum English language level?

The student must submit evidence to the UK Embassy/Consulate that they meet a minimum English language level of CEFR B1 when applying for a Tier 4 General Student Visa.

The evidence for English must be a Secure English Language Test. The following tests are the most well recognised:

• Cambridge English Exams: KET, PET, FCE and CPE, BULATS• IELTS• TOEIC• TOEFL• Pearson Test of English Academic

We provide a variety of options in both Canterbury and London. These consist of:

HomestayIn Canterbury all Homestays are Half Board – breakfast and dinner daily and lunch at weekends in homestay is included in the accommodation we offer. The host family also takes care of a reasonable amount of personal laundry, usually once a week. For students living outside a comfortable walking distance to the school, every weekday we provide a free bus service to and from the School at pick-up points in the homestay areas. The School acts as an intermediary between the student and the householder.

In London we offer a wider variety of homestays, offered directly by the school or through established third party providers. The School will always act as the interface between accommodation and the students. Two weeks’ notice is required to change homestay accommodation. A cancellation charge equivalent to the cost of two weeks’ stay is applicable to any homestay cancellations.

Please note that homestay accommodation can only be booked upon receipt of full payment and flight details.

ResidencesResidential students are responsible for their own personal laundry and coin-operated washing machines are provided. Bed linen is provided and changed weekly. Students should bring their own towels. You are advised to contact us for further information on the different residences before making your booking as availability is limited.

Please note that residential accommodation can only be booked upon receipt of full payment and flight details, and a cancellation charge of up to the cost of four week’s stay applies.

Private OptionsStudents are free to not book accommodation with the School and make independent arrangements. We cannot be held resposible for the accommodation booked in this way. We will do our best to point students in the right direction should they want to find independent accommodation. We are also pleased to advise on local guest houses and hotels which should be booked direct with the establishment concerned.

Student HousesThis option allows students to share with other students in a house, living in an independent but social environment. In London the houses are located near underground stations and in Canterbury are close to the school.

All the houses have been recently decorated and have a living room and often a garden. The modern bathrooms are tiled and kitchens are fully equipped with washing machine and all major appliances (except dishwasher), cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils are provided.

Rooms are cleaned before occupancy only and common areas of the houses are cleaned every 2 weeks. Bed linen is provided but students should bring their own towels. Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms and laundering their bed linen. Wireless Broadband Internet connection is included in the price.

Please note that student house accommodation can only be booked upon receipt of full payment and flight details.

General notes

The School does not make a profit on accommodation. A small part of the fees are retained to cover administration costs. Students wishing to extend their accommodation must give 2 weeks’ notice.
