As the number of staff in school continues to rise, Trustees have decided to employ a part-time Human Resources Assistant to support the Admin Team. Mrs Louise Keohane will be joining us in

January 2015. We hope she will be very happy at Corsham Primary.

Mrs Liz Oliver, our fantastic Office Manager, will be leaving us at the end of term to start her new life and adventures with her husband Tony. Liz and Tony will be sailing off into the sunset on the Queen Mary for an extended cruise around the world. What an amazing time they are going to

have - we all wish them every happiness in the future.

Training Days 2015-2016

hold four consecutive training days in September 2015 in order that staff can get everything completed. The days will be Tuesday 1st—Friday 4th September (with the last one on Monday

_________________________________________________________________ 30 November 2014 Dear Parents and Carers Schools Direct Places As you know, we belong to a Teaching School Alliance comprising schools, higher education providers and businesses. Teaching Schools are part of the government’s drive to give schools more freedom and to enable schools to take increasing responsibility for managing the education system. Our Teaching School is called the Pickwick Learning Teaching School Alliance (PLTSA) and has the following members: The Aster Housing Group, Bailey’s Court Primary School, Bath Spa University, Corsham Primary School, Malmesbury Primary School, OJO Solutions Ltd, Sea Mills Primary School and Children’s Centre, Snapdragon Nurseries Ltd, St Michael’s Primary School, Charborough Road Primary School, Bulford St Leonard’s Primary School, Hullavington Primary School, Two Mile Hill Primary School and The University of Gloucestershire. We provide Schools Direct teacher training in liaison with the University of Gloucestershire to help ensure future generations of teachers become outstanding practitioners. Schools Direct enables trainees to apply directly to train in a particular school, and the vast majority of the course is based in school working with teachers and children, ‘learning on the job’. We have six unsalaried places for Schools Direct across the alliance. The UCAS application window is now open to apply for these teacher training places. Schools Direct trainees apply to the University of Gloucestershire, through the UCAS website: www.ucas.com. Simply search for ‘Corsham Primary’ (the lead school in the PLTSA alliance) in the ‘Search for teacher training programmes’ section of the UCAS site to find codes to use on the application form. If you are interested in training to become a teacher, or know someone who is, visit our website: www.pltsa.co.uk or contact myself or Fiona Allen, Executive Headteacher at the school. We look forward to hearing from you.

Congratulations!

We are delighted to report that Mrs Vines, Mrs Kendall, Miss White, Mrs Doe,

Mr Essam, Miss Palmer, Mr Passmore and Miss Hole have recently completed a

10 month course facilitated by Pickwick Learning called “Leadership for the 21st

Century”. The course covered many aspects of the school leadership and

included regular coaching sessions and the opportunity to shadow school

leaders. We thought you would like to see their graduation photo and celebrate

their achievement with us.

he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps…

means a little bit more!”

What is the Advent Spiral all

about?

Advent, from the Latin “to come”, is the period

including the four Sundays before Christmas. In

the tradition of the Christian churches, one candle

is lit each Sunday until the light of four candles

heralds the birth of Christ. Advent is a time of

preparation, a gradual build up to Christmas day.

The Advent Spiral itself symbolises the journey we

make through the dark winter months, whilst the

central candle represents the light of Christmas

and the birth of Jesus. In two separate

ceremonies, Reception and Year 3 children at

Pound Pill, Reception and Year 6 at Broadwood,

together with any children new to the school,

walked around the leafy spiral and back out

with a lit candle on 1 December to add to

the Advent Spiral.

This year Corsham Primary School children were once again chosen to represent a national group of children known as 'HMS Heroes'. On Friday 7 November, ten of our children, who have parents in the armed forces, took part in a special service to open the Royal Wootton Bassett Field of Remembrance at Lydiard Park in Swindon. The children planted crosses with messages written by children and staff from Corsham Primary School, as well as crosses from other schools from the south west, as far away as Cornwall. Two children, Morgan and Sam, marched alongside adult standard bearers with the HMS Heroes standard, and lowered this at 11am for the 2 minute silence. The children worked so carefully to plant every cross, and were outstanding representatives of Corsham Primary School and HMS Heroes.

The Great Fire of London

Year 2 children at both sites

enjoyed a mini “Great Fire of

London” which took place on

the school playing fields with

the support and backup of the

Wiltshire Fire Service and

MOD Fire Dept.

Pupils built their seventeenth

century buildings at home and

then reconstructed a mini

London outside. Mr Hancock,

(Pound Pill) and Mr Morris

(Broadwood) our firemen, lit

the matches. The children all

watched as fire took hold and

spread through our little

Londons very fast in the wind!

It all looked so

realistic; it was almost a

shame to see them go up in a

puff of smoke but we

certainly all learnt a lot about

the “Great Fire”.

Bikeability News …

Huge congratulations to everybody who took their 2-day Bikeability this year—everyone did extremely well and enjoyed learning more about how to ride their bikes safely on the roads around Corsham. We have one more course running on 3 and 10 December.

Well done to everyone involved.

Poppy Appeal

The Royal British Legion have informed us that

last year we donated £77.07 from Pound Pill

and £45.59 from Broadwood to the Poppy

We have had a request from our Teaching Assistant

team for any puzzles that you may no longer require/use

at home. These need to be in good condition and

suitable for use by children aged 8 and under.

Thank you!

BE BRIGHT. BE SEEN

We have reached that time of year again when daylight hours are

shortening and the clocks have been altered. This may mean that some

children are travelling to and from school at twilight, or in the dark.

Please remind children that wearing something reflective at night or

fluorescent in daylight will help them to be seen by drivers.

Although children may be able to see vehicles in the dark, drivers may

not see them and it is important that they are visible when crossing

roads or walking along unlit roads. If they are riding bicycles in the dark

they must, by law, have a white front light and red rear light. The rear

reflector must also be kept clean. It is especially important to wear

reflective clothing when cycling in the dark.

Playground Craze of the Month December’s crazes are joke books, finger boards,

Knex, Christmas head-gear, card games. Please ensure that toys are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Outdoor P.E.

The school is continuing to increase its outdoor P.E. provision and the weather is

getting colder! For this to be achievable and safe, we would like to remind everyone that

an outdoor P.E. kit would be preferable:

Tracksuit, trousers, sweatshirt and outdoor trainers.

Gloves and hat when very cold!

Anti Bullying Week

All the staff were very proud of the children for embracing Anti Bullying Week so positively. The children took part in a variety of activities designed to engage them in discussion,

broadening their knowledge and understanding of bullying in the wider sense of the word.

I know a concern for many parents is the whole issue of cyber bullying and while we as a school have no

control about what children can access outside school, we hope discussions will raise their awareness of

the dangers.

In addition to the fantastic activities the children participated in we were visited by an assessor from the

Anti-Bullying Quality Mark—UK who inspected a myriad of evidence as well as observing lessons and

assembly. We haven't officially been told the outcome yet but we are, as always, inwardly smiling!

Watch this space!

Visit Childnet International and follow the SMART rules. For advice on chat-room safety take a look at Chatdanger. thinkuknow.co.uk has some straight-talking advice on many aspects of online safety -follow the sections from the

dropdown box on the opening page. CEOP has some useful information, and will also let you report anything you've seen or experienced on the internet that has made you feel threatened or uncomfortable.

If you do encounter problems with something you do on the internet, TELL SOMEONE. You'll not only be protecting yourself but other people of your age as well. Your parents, teacher or a trusted adult will be able to help you. If

they want some advice, then get them to read this page. The Government's Department for Children, Schools and Families have also produced guidelines on cyber bullying.

During our Carol Singing and Christmas Concerts this year, we will be collecting money to support Canine Partners and the Corsham

Almshouses. For further information about Canine Partners, please look at their website: www.caninepartners.org.uk. Our children, who benefit from visiting the Almshouses, are keen to help them

collect money to support a much needed new central heating system.

Christmas Fayre

The Christmas Fayre was a massive success and really helped to get the festive season off

to a great start. Lots of fun was had by all. It was fantastic to have so many helpers for our

stalls – we couldn’t have done it without you, so thank you! We raised over £3,500 which is

a fantastic result and a bumper year!

Sports News CPS Girls vs St Patricks Girls

On Friday 7 November, Corsham Primary played against St Patricks and in the first half, St Patricks scored 4. Corsham Primary scored nil. St Patricks were very good players and in the second half,

Corsham Primary scored 1 and St Patricks scored 2. Corsham Primary enjoyed playing. Elizabeth Gregory got the Golden Boot for being Captain and for putting effort into leading the

team. End result Corsham Primary 1 St Patricks 6. Written by: Elizabeth G

Girls football club is on Fridays at Pound Pill from 3.10pm—4.15pm.

Tom and Connie took their Sports Leader training to the next level by bravely refereeing a

mixed year 3 and 4 tag rugby match against St Patricks. Both young leaders were

confident to use their leadership skills and sporting knowledge to keep the game flowing in a

safe, enjoyable and competitive way for both players and supporters. Even though we

struggled to stop St Patrick’s scoring their 8 tries, our players never gave up and

everyone kept moving and passing the ball quickly - constantly trying everything they could to

break through their defence more than the twice we managed. Unfortunately we just couldn't

get through their strong and very experienced team. Well done to all those who took part.

Written jointly by the Tag Rugby Team

Sports News continued ...

Corsham didn't adapt to the pace of the game which St Patricks set within the first 5 minutes

of this friendly match and were really unlucky when St Patricks scored 2 goals within this

time. After this shock Corsham took charge and dominated the rest of the game by keeping

the ball in St Patrick’s defensive half. However they just couldn't get the ball past St

Patrick’s very talented keeper to score. A disappointing result of 2-0 after 40 minutes which

does not reflect the quality of football that these boys played.

Six girls in Year 6 have worked really hard and showed

great dedication learning a contemporary dance

choreographed by ex-pupil, Lucy, who is studying A level

dance at Sheldon.

With only 5 hours of rehearsals, they developed

the confidence to go out and perform their dance in the

Wiltshire Schools Dance Festival at the Corn Exchange in

Devizes. All of the girls danced beautifully, keeping in

time to the music and remembering all the moves. They

danced to Secrets by One Republics. The dance

expressed excitement through bold and powerful

movements with contrasting actions to show the

differentiation between the dancers. It created abstract

and complementary shapes enabling the dancers to

think together to fit as one.

This dance has now been entered into the regional heats

of the “Great Big Dance Off” which is a National

competition for primary and secondary children at the

Wyvern Theatre in Swindon in March.

Sports News continued ... Another year has gone and still Corsham Primary School are showing the other schools in

the area how amazing and talented they are at Boccia. Four excited teams were entered

into the 2014 Mid-Wilts tournament which is made up of about 24 teams of children in

Key Stages 2 and 3.

After a long and chilly day at the Dome in Chippenham where each team played 6

matches, we were presented with a very lovely trophy and the honour of being the school

that demonstrated the most determination and commitment in Boccia throughout the

afternoon.

This term it's hockey at Central Venue and what a good start our Broadwood team had in

the first round. It was a pleasure to watch them implementing the core hockey skills they

have learnt in their PE lessons last term. Every game saw less feet touching the ball and

more of the ball progressing back and forth up and down the pitch as every team

member put in so much effort attacking and defending that very rarely did the ball make

the back of the goal. At the end of the afternoon we had drawn 2 games (0-0) and lost 1

one (1-0 ).

More PTA NEWS …

New Committee At our PTA AGM in October we voted in a new committee for 2014/15. We are fortunate that many committee members were happy to re-stand. However, we are pleased also, to welcome some new faces. This year we have appointed year reps. They will be your first point of contact about PTA events and will co-ordinate ticket sales etc. We have a few year groups at Pound Pill without a rep - if this is something you could help with please do get in touch. Finally, we also have a larger social team this year who will work together on events for the whole family and build on the success of our recent events for adults to organise more things like this. Thanks to everyone who has taken on a role this year. Monster Run

At the start of November a team of PTA members braved the cold and the mud to complete the Charlton Park Monster Race. They climbed walls, scrambled through bushes, crawled under barbed wire and generally did all manner of crazy things to raise funds for the school. They raised over £400. Well done girls!

We have received a lovely letter from Corsham Churches Foodbank, thanking everyone

for their contributions at Harvest time. At Christmas, CCF are sending out 40 special

boxes of food with extra Christmas items to families who need a little help over the

festive period.

Thank you to everybody for your generous donations.

Peer Mediators

Over the past 8 weeks, a group of 30 children from both sites have gone through an eight-stage

training programme in order to become Peer Mediators. We are delighted to announce that each

and every one of them passed with flying colours. They introduced themselves to the school in

assembly and are now beginning their duties.

The children began by filling out an “all about me” profile in order to understand the skills and

qualities they already had and could bring to the Peer Mediator role. The next step was to

understand the mediation process and learn the steps they would have to follow in order to

successfully mediate amongst their peers in the playground.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the children for their enthusiasm, maturity and

professionalism during the training, which was nothing short of perfect. They are all very keen to

begin their new role and I know that they will maintain their mature and professional attitude out

on the playground as they assist the teachers and play workers. Congratulations and good luck for

the coming year.

The Clones—PTA party

Our first PTA adult social with live music was a sell out and a huge success. On 14 November, Corsham’s hottest new band ‘The Clones’ packed out Corsham

Football Club and entertained everyone with their amazing and hugely varied set list. Massive thanks to the band, which is made up of Dads with children across

both sites, and all those who helped with the preparations for this event. Together we raised over £800! We hope that this money can be spent on enhancing music

within the school.

Go Go Grapes

On Thursday 6 November, at Corsham Primary School, the Go Go Grapes ran the

school. This involved lots of activities such as:

Design a Smoothie competition – in line with healthy eating – 4 winners (boy and girl

from KS1 and KS2). Certificate was presented in assembly and on Wednesday

12 November they made their smoothie for everyone to try.

Huff and Puff exercise - design a sport. The winner is going to take a PE lesson.

All of the children and staff dressed up in purple or as grapes and the donations went

to Sport Relief.

The Chancellor worked on the school budget and counted the mufti money.

Go Go Grapes hosted the Lunchtime Staff Meeting and ran through the agenda as
