OUR PROJECTSThe University of Birmingham is committed to finding solutions to global challenges, including water

sustainability, heart disease and the development of our future leaders. As one of the broadest reaching charities in the UK, we are tackling issues that affect us all.

If you would like to speak to us about how you can help fight children’s cancer, or for support in your fundraising, please get in touch on 48895 or

[email protected].

Amber Phillpott was just a year old when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), one of the most devastating forms of blood cancer. After initially responding well to chemotherapy, her condition rapidly worsened. Just five months after Amber had been diagnosed, her parents were told that doctors had run out of treatment options. Sadly, Amber passed away on 5th March 2011.

Ambers’ parents responded with bravery by donating a sample of Amber’s blood to a team of cancer scientists led by Dr Frank Mussai, who now works at the University of Birmingham on both AML and a type of solid tumour called neuroblastoma – two of the most common and hardest to treat cancers in children. Amber’s has given us invaluable new insights into the way that cancer affects the immune system, and in particular revealed that cancer cells are addicted to a particular nutrient called arginine. By starving the cancer of this nutrient we can allow the child’s immune system to fight cancer on its own.

As a result of the blood sample kindly provided by Amber’s parents, we are now on the cusp of developing a new form of treatment to reactivate the body’s natural defences against cancer – a considerably less toxic treatment than chemotherapy.

By fundraising for the University of Birmingham, you will help unlock the door to a world of life-saving cures and innovative therapies.

Without the wonderful gift made by Amber’s parents we would not have come as far as we have in combating childhood cancer. The money you raise will ensure that we can take full advantage of the discoveries made as a result of analysing Amber’s blood, and help us develop new treatments that could eventually be used for more types of cancer.

Fundraising Focus: Childhood CancerMore than 1500 children are diagnosed with cancer in the UK every year.

WHAT kind of event do you want to hold? Think about what would INTEREST

people in order to encourage donations - a lunchtime ‘pub’ quiz, odd socks day or an OFFICE BAKE OFF? The possibilities are ENDLESS!

WHERE is there a suitable venue on campus that’s ACCESSIBLE to as many people as possible? Or perhaps only host for your OFFICE? Check with your office manager for rooms to book within your building, or host in your nearest

work kitchen. Don’t forget about Staff House!

WHEN will you hold your fundraising event? You need to consider which dayand time is best for attendance. Bear in mind regular team meetings, work deadlines or away days that may interfere with your event.

HOW are you going to raise the money? Check out our office fundraising ideas in the pack for INSPIRATION.

WHY are you hosting this event in the first place? There are many ways to SPREAD THE WORD about your event. You can use our template poster on the staff fundraising website to advertise round your building, include details in the weekly office email or send a quick email shout-out.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT…

Getting in Touch

Please fill out our online form at www.birmingham.ac.uk/stafffundraising to let us know about your staff fundraising event. We can help you publicise, and we’d love to pop in to see you!

Making the most of your

fundraising

The University has charitable status and can reclaim GIFT AID on donations, increasing their value by 25%. So for every £100 raised during Staff Fundraising Week another £25 could be received from HMRC in reclaimed tax from the Gift Aid scheme. 100% of donations will go straight to the project, so every penny counts towards combating childhood cancer.

Remember to ask donors to fill in yoursponsorship form in order for us to claim Gift Aid and maximise your fundraising total! Gift Aid can only be claimed on voluntary donations, so if you are asking for a specific donation (i.e. £2 per cake) then unfortunately we can’t claimed Gift Aid. It’s up to you how you decide to ask for donations - sometimes asking for a specific amount can encourage your donors to give more!

We don’t have a registered charity number because universities have charitable status without needing to register. You probably won’t need it, but our tax-exempt charities reference number is X7237 – just in case.

Paying in your donations

There are many ways that you can ask your colleagues to make a donation to the University. The easiest way is to create a JustGiving page, or you can collect donations in cash (good for bake sales) or ask colleagues to donate via text message.

JustGiving is a secure and easy-to-use fundraising tool that enables you to collect donations online or by text message. You can even join the Staff Fundraising Week team page and watch our total go up day by day! To set your page up, visit:http://www.justgiving.com/universityofbirmingham/raisemoney/

Any cash donations collected need to be counted by two people and logged on the ‘cash counting sheet’ found in the back of this pack. We’ll even come and collect it from your office if it’s more convenient.

Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or on 48895 for further advice on how to collect funds and return them to us.

Social Media

We would love to hear about your fundraising activities so please get in touch on social media. Use #RaisedByUoB to share your best photos and let us know how your fundraising is going.

Fundraising event and cause: Staff Fundraising Week – Childhood Cancer Research

If you are making a recommended donation towards cakes/coffee etc. and you pay UK income tax, then your donation could go even further with Gift Aid. This means that the University would receive an extra 25p in reclaimed tax for each

£1 that you donate, with no extra expense to you. In order to help us claim these funds, we would be grateful if you could complete the details below…

*I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand the charity will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.
