Prayer and Church Starting by Stewart Pickle, D.Min.

God has never called us to do what we are capable of doing. Isaiah was respected. He was seen as completely qualified as a priest. When King Uzziah died, Isaiah grieved for the future of Israel. That was when God revealed the power and presence of the King of kings to Isaiah. As Isaiah saw the LORD, he saw himself as unworthy. God cleansed him and lifted him up. God asked, “Who will go?” Isaiah wanted the privilege. “Here am I; send me.” It is not hard to start the church God wants—it is impossible! Yet if we meet God and He sends us, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE IN CHRIST. Two things have to happen: An effective church planter must understand that he is not able to start the church God wants. As he comes to realize that it is God who wants him to start a church, he needs to spend time with God until God sends him.

Since God is doing the sending—it is His church—time must be spent with Him each day to share needs and victories. His guidance does not come as a 5 year strategy plan which needs to be developed. It comes as daily marching orders. He has a divine

interruption. He will nudge you to talk to a person you meet. He will give you grace as you counsel. A church planter needs the humility to depend on God. He knows the arrogant and proud. Whether in prideful pretense of prayer or in using people instead of serving them, the proud can count on one thing. God keeps them at a distance. The results they produce by manipulating people in God’s name is all the reward they will see—and it will not last. When we walk with God we have real hope. Hope is a firm expectation based on the character of the One who has promised. We can expect Him to act, not on our time line but at the right time. We need to be sensitive to where God is working. As we depend

Story. What’s yours? Everyone has one – some sound familiar, some predictable, even surprising, but all of them are an account of a person’s life map leading them to this particular moment in time. Sometimes when you ask to hear someone’s story you get more than you bargained for – I recall a Deacon Ordination when I was in grade school where each Deacon Candidate shared their testimony. One after the other they got up, took a few minutes to share, and then sat down. But not Bro Smith. Bro. Smith stood and told us about his faith journey beginning with receiving Christ in the fourth grade and then walked us through something important that happened each year (literally, every year) in his life from that point forward…he had gray hair, when he finished 38 minutes later, I thought I did too. Good story. Right context. Wrong length. But I do remember his story, even after more than 40 years have passed – that’s the power of story in our lives. God is a storyteller. Anyone reading the scripture knows it is a story of stories. Lived out in real time in a world so often deaf to the sound of His story. But He keeps on telling the story.

Creation, the Fall of Humankind, Relationship, Covenant, Faithfulness, Faithlessness, Triumph, Failure, more Failure, Correction, Encouragement, Silence – so much silence. 400 years of silence. But then the echo of the Story Teller’s voice speaks out of the darkness into the life of Zachariah, to Elizabeth, to Mary, to shepherds, to sojourners from the East, to the dark heart of Herod, to sleepy town, to the world – “for unto you is born this day a Savior, Christ, the Lord.” And the Story Teller became flesh and dwelt among us and the heartbeat of the Story Teller could be heard in the chest of a baby. He grew, grew up, walked the earth, felt the sun on his skin, splinters in his hands, the weight of daily life, understood our lives, took on the work of redemption, fulfilled all righteousness, mounted a cross, became sin for us, paid the ultimate price, was buried only to be triumphantly resurrected on Easter morning. And the world was changed because the Story Teller transformed everything by not narrating a story but incarnating its reality. The message of Easter doesn’t begin at the cross – it echoes in the heart of God before the creation of the world.

Easter is a season of story – we hear the story, we sing the story, we worship the one who is the Story. We are transformed by the power of the Story becoming a reality in our hearts. Hymns include themes such as “Tell me the story of Jesus”, “I heard an old, old, story”, “I love to tell the story” and on and on but what if we moved from singing about to talking about the story. Not just in church but also at home, at school, at work, at play, at bowling—in our world so needy of hearing the Real Story lived out and demonstrated in the story of our lives. Greatest story. Right context. In Kingdom service,
