Staff profileMelanie Oliver, Executive Director
Melanie Oliver has just joined the Water Ski and Wakeboard Alberta office team as the Executive Director. But that is the only water ski or wakeboard team she has ever been on! Melanie has experience working with non-profit organizations and loves the strong sense of community that is found when people are working towards something they love. When she is not working for WSWA, she is also an instructor at MacEwan University in the Office Administration Program. She has had experience working in a variety of offices and has taught everything from algebra to résumé writing at the post-secondary level. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Melanie was born and raised in Edmonton although a lot of her summers were spent either in Calgary or on Buffalo Lake.

Jaret Llewellyn’s Road to Recovery At age 42, exactly 20 years after breaking his first world record, Jaret Llewellyn is looking to make a comeback at the 2013 world championships in Santiago, Chile, at the end of this year. Since 2010, however, he has been struggling off and on with some serious injuries. This year, Llewellyn was coming back strong, with some impressive overall scores of 225 feet in jump, 10,650 points in trick, and running 38 off in slalom. His goal was to be strong and ready for the worlds, but an unfortunate jump crash out the front in practice has set him back a step. Can we still expect to see Llewellyn as one of the top overall contenders at the Worlds in November? Go to this link to read on: http://waterskimag.com/features/2013/06/23/jaret-llewellyns-road-to-recovery/ No Cable Parks in AlbertaA cable park features a permanent overhead cable system to pull water ski/wakeboard riders via an electric motor, as opposed to being towed behind a boat as in the traditional version of the sport. Of course like most new things; everyone has their opinion about it. Cable skiing/wakeboarding is popular in Europe, and is slowly gaining popularity in North America. There are only a handful of cable facilities in Canada. Winnipeg, Manitoba being one of them! The creation of the cable park is simplifying watersports because now we no longer need a driver, a spotter or gas money. As a result making the sports we love more accessible to more people.
Training and ResourcesTips from the ProsJeff Langley excerpted from Wakeworld
Jeff Langley has been sneaking onto the pro wake scene with huge wake-to-wake air and crazy tricks. Originally from Rome, Georgia but currently lives in Orlando, Florida like many watersports athletes. He will be here in Alberta July 15-19th to coach at the Elite Wakeboard Training Camp at Lake Isle.
On making a Career out of Wakeboarding: “I never really decided I was going to be a pro wakeboarder. I was bouncing back and forth from Georgia and Florida with random jobs and realized that I wasn’t happy without warm weather and wakeboarding. Then I found myself wakeboarding more than anything else and it finally happened.”
Favorite Tournament: “Brostock!”
Coolest place travelled for Wakeboarding: “Asia”
Preferred Rope Length & speed: “75 & 23 mph”
Words of wisdom: “For every amateur wakeboard just one tip to improve their riding would be to learn it switch and keep it fun!”
If you’d like to ride with Jeff, there are still spaces available but they are filling up fast.Call the Shawn Gratzfeld at 780-964-7433 to register. Go to the following link to check out Jeff’s skills: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPue66pXqJ4
Breanne Dodd -- Investors Group Bursary Reciptient OTTAWA, June 27, 2013 – AthletesCAN and Investors Group are pleased to announce that Water ski national team member Breanne Dodd has been awarded a $5,000 Team Investors Group Amateur Athletes Fund bursary.
In keeping with their commitment to amateur sport in Canada, Investors Group estab-lished a bursary fund for Canada’s top high performance athletes. A national leader in delivering personalized financial solutions to Canadians, Investors Group annually awards twenty $5,000 bursaries to assist Canada’s elite amateur athletes with the costs of training and competition. Selection criteria includes: athletic achievement, financial need and community involvement. Since its inception in 2000, the Team Inves-tors Group Amateur Athletes Fund has provided more than $1,300,000 to Canadian athletes. AthletesCAN administers the bursary on behalf of Investors Group.
“Investors Group considers it an honour to help support our nation’s elite athletes with these bursaries,” says Richard Irish, Vice-President, Community Affairs and Marketing Support for Investors Group. “Athletes at this level are constantly juggling the demands of work and school with training and competition. For 13 years now, we have been pleased to provide Canada’s athletes with bursaries totaling over $1 million to make those demands easier to manage.”
“This bursary recognizes the dedication and excellence Breanne exhibits on the field of play and as a leader within her community,” says AthletesCAN Executive Direc-tor Jasmine Northcott. “AthletesCAN values Investors Group’s ongoing support of Canada’s national team athletes, and are excited to see this bursary assist Breanne in achieving her dreams.”
