Minister Gregory Rusland van Natuurlijke Hulpbronnen verte-

genwoordigde de enige aandeelhouder, de Republiek Suriname. Ook de raad van commissarissen (rvc), de directie en divisiemanagers van Staatsolie waren aanwezig. De minister en de rvc toonden zich uitermate tevreden over de prestaties van Staatsolie in het afgelopen boekjaar. Zij spraken hun waardering uit voor de bijzondere inzet en loyaliteit van de directie en het personeel in het afgelopen jaar, waarin belangrijke voorzieningen zijn doorgevoerd voor de verdere ontwik-keling van Staatsolie.

BewezeN IN boekjaar 2009

In het boekjaar 2009 heeft Staatsolie haar robuustheid bewezen door ondanks de economische wereldrecessie goed te presteren. De bruto-omzet bedroeg US$ 425

miljoen en de winst vóór belastingen was US$ 181 mil-joen. De jaarrekening werd goedgekeurd op de

Algemene Vergadering van Aandeelhouders (AVA) op 8 april.

De omzet en winst in het boekjaar 2009 zijn lager dan in het boekjaar 2008. Deze daling vindt haar oorsprong in de lagere olieprijzen als gevolg van de eco-nomische wereldcrisis. Noteerde een barrel Saramacca Crude in 2008 gemiddeld US$ 78,89, in 2009 was dat US$ 57,66. Aan de staatskas is over het boekjaar 2009 US$ 124 miljoen bijgedragen, waarvan US$ 58 miljoen als dividend en US$ 66 miljoen in de vorm van diverse belastingen. De olieproductie van gemiddeld 16.055 barrels per dag resulteerde in een jaar-productie van 5,86 miljoen barrels. De raffinaderij produceerde in totaal 2,74 miljoen vaten aan diesel, stookolie en bitumen.

De investeringen in 2009 bedroegen US$ 135 miljoen, waarvan US$ 58 miljoen voor exploratie en productieontwikkeling en US$ 44 miljoen voor diverse down-streamprojecten waaronder het Raffinaderij Expansie Project. In verschillende projecten voor diversificatie werd US$ 33 miljoen geïnvesteerd. Het afgelopen boekjaar is er verder vorm gegeven aan het Staatsolie Business Plan 2008-2012. Ook is de zoektocht naar olie voortgezet. Aan het eind van 2009 zijn de winbare oliereserves op land gecalculeerd op 79 miljoen barrels. Het doel is om eind 2012 ruim 64 miljoen barrels aan de huidige reserves toe te voegen. Voor 2010 is het exploitatie- en investeringsbudget geraamd op US$ 330 miljoen, US$ 120 miljoen meer dan in 2009. De financiering vindt plaats uit eigen middelen.

De betrokkenheid met de samenleving werd gedemonstreerd met de onder-steuning van projecten op het gebied van educatie, sport, milieu, sociaal werk, kunst en cultuur. Diverse projecten zijn in totaal voor US$ 500.000 ondersteund. De ondersteuning van duurzame projecten werd overgedragen aan de Stichting Staatsolie Foundation for Community Development, die haar activiteiten in de tweede helft van 2009 startte met een budget van US$ 1 miljoen. Daarnaast besteedde het Staatsolie Sportfonds US$ 900.000.

Solidity Proven in 2009

Staatsolie has proven its solidity in the 2009 fiscal

year by an excellent performance despite the global

economic recession. The company grossed US$

425 million, with a US$ 181 gross profit. The annual

statement of account was approved of by the General

Shareholders Meeting (AVA) on 8 April last.

Sole shareholder, the Republic of Suriname, was

represented by Natural Resources Minister Gregory

Rusland. In addition to the Board of Supervisory

Commissioners and the Board of Executive Directors,

division managers were also present at the share-

holders meeting. The Minister and the Board of

Supervisory Commissioners were quite content with

Staatsolie’s performance in the 2009. They both

praised the Staatsolie management and staff for its

remarkable efforts and loyalty. The 2009 fiscal year

saw the implementation of significant provisions for

further development of Staatsolie

Compared to 2008 the 2009 turnover and returns have

dropped, due mainly to the lower oil prices as a result

of the global economic crisis. Saramacca Crude aver-

aged US$ 78.89 per barrel in 2008, but in 2009 the

price dropped to US$ 57.66. The exchequer received

US$ 124 million for 2009, US$ 58 of which was divi-

dend and US$ 66 million several taxes.

went to several diversification projects. The Staatsolie

Business Plan 2008 – 2012 was further developed in

2009. Oil exploration was also continued. By the end of

2009 the recoverable onshore reserves were estimat-

ed at 79 million barrels. Staatsolie aims at the addition

of another 64 million barrels to the reserves by the end

of 2012. The 2010 exploration and investment budget

is estimated at US$ 330 million. This is US$120 million

over the 2009 figure. Staatsolie will draw the financial

means from its own resources.

Social involvement was demonstrated by support

for several projects in the field of education, sports,

environment, social services, art and culture. US$

500,000 went to support several projects. The support

for sustainable projects was left to the discretion of the

Staatsolie Foundation for Community Development,

which started its activities in the latter half of 2009

with a US$ 1 million budget. In addition the Staatsolie

Sports Fund spent US$ 900,000.

Een groot deel van het investerings-budget is bestemd voor de uitbrei-

ding van de raffinaderij. Door deze uit-breiding hoeft Suriname in de toekomst geen diesel en gasoline meer te impor-teren. Bovendien wordt de nationale energiezekerheid verhoogd. Lokaal is er een obligatielening uitgeschreven, waar-mee US$ 55,1 miljoen is opgehaald. Internationaal zullen Credit Suisse en ING Bank de financiering van US$ 275 miljoen arrangeren, omdat deze twee instellingen voldoende expertise bezitten op het gebied van energiefinanciering. De finale overeenkomst hiervoor moet eind juli af zijn.

UitdagingenFinancieel directeur Iwan Kortram zegt dat er grote uitdagingen waren om de externe financieringen succesvol te laten verlopen. Voor een effectieve uitvoering is er een financieringsbeleid en -strate-gie vastgesteld. rating). “Tijdens het financieringstraject werden wij daarnaast geconfronteerd met het verhoogd risicosentiment van de banken met betrekking tot financie-ringen in opkomende markten.” De nasleep van de globale financiële crisis en de mondiale recessie waren duidelijk voelbaar tijdens het traject. De sterke financiële positie en goede reputatie van het bedrijf vormden de keerzijde van de medaille.Internationale financiering is niet nieuw voor Staatsolie. In 1985 werd de eerste lening van US$ 2,5 miljoen afgesloten. Tien jaar later werd US$ 45 mil-joen geleend bij de ABN-AMRO en EFAG voor de financiering van de bouw van de huidige raffinaderij. Voor die lening werd staatsgarantie afgegeven. “In 2009 doen wij dit op basis van de financiële reputatie van ons bedrijf”, zegt algemeen directeur Marc Waaldijk. “Het is inderdaad onvoorstelbaar wat het verschil is aan ontwikkeling na vijftien jaar.” Waaldijk benadrukt hierbij de schuldenvrije positie van Staatsolie vanaf 2005.

TransparantieOnderdeel van het financieringsbeleid en de financieringsstrategie was dat Staatsolie een finan-cieringsrelatie wilde aangaan met “een aantal robuuste banken”, legt Kortram uit, “waaruit wij tevens onze huisbankiers zouden kunnen selecte-ren”. Hij noemt dit belangrijk in verband met de verwachte toename van de financieringsbehoefte bij de uitvoering van Staatsolies langetermijnplan Vision 2020. Staatsolie gaf de voorkeur aan een lening die was gearrangeerd door twee financiële instel-lingen met voldoende ervaring op het gebied van energiefinanciering en participatie van robuuste banken. In deze fase was er geen prioriteit voor financiering via de internationale kapitaalmarkt of via multilaterale financiële instellingen. Moge-lijkheden zoals projectfinanciering of financiering door tussenkomst van kredietbemiddelaars had-den een lage prioriteit in het financieringsbeleid. Staatsolie heeft de onderhandelingen zelf gevoerd, consultants hadden slechts een advise-rende rol. Kortram geeft aan dat in het hele traject transparantie de rode draad is geweest, “vanwege de omvang van de leningen en het daaraan ver-bonden belang”.

Staatsolie needs US$ 1 billion to carry out its 2008-2012

investment program. More than two thirds, US$ 680 million,

will be drawn from Staatsolie’s own resources. The local,

regional and international financial markets will provide the

remaining US$ 320 million.

A large part of the investment budget is intended for the

refinery expansion project. This expansion will free Suriname

from obligatory diesel and gasoline imports. Additionally it will

reinforce the national energy supply. A locally issued bond loan

yielded US$ 55.1 million. Credit Suisse and the ING Bank will

internationally arrange for a US$ 275 million loan. These two

financial institutions are experts in the field of energy financing.

The final contract must be ready by the end of July.

Challenges

Financial director Iwan Kortram says there were big challenges

for successful completion of external financing. To guarantee

effective implementation, a financing policy and strategy were

determined. A special requirement was Staatsolie’s position as

state-owned company and Suriname’s non-investment grade

rating. ‘In the course of the financing process, we were con-

fronted with the increased risk sentiment among banks when

financing in upcoming markets.’

The aftermath of the global financial crisis and the global reces-

sion were tangibly present. However, Staatsolie’s solid financial

position and its reputable name made a favorable impression.

International financing is not new to Staatsolie. In 1985 the

company secured its first US$ 2.5 million loan. Ten years later,

45 million was borrowed from ABN-AMRO and EFAG to finance

the construction of the existing refinery. A government guaran-

US$ 310 miljoen is bestemd voor duurzame consolidatie van de olieproductie op 16.000 vaten olie per dag. In de ont-wikkeling van hernieuwbare energie wordt US$ 10 miljoen geïnvesteerd, met name in de productie van biobrandstof (ethanol) uit suikerriet. US$ 20 miljoen wordt besteed aan uitbreiding van de opwekkingscapaciteit van Staatsolies elektriciteitscentrale van 14 megawatt naar 28 megawatt. Aan exploratie wordt US$ 85 miljoen besteed.

GarantieOnderdirecteur Finance ,Agnes Moensi-Sokowikromo, merkt op dat Staatsolie voor het eerst in haar dertigjarig bestaan een dergelijke grote financiering zoekt op de externe kredietmarkt in en buiten Suriname. “Internationale banken hanteren ratio’s om te kunnen vaststellen of wij in staat zijn die lening af te lossen.” Op basis van een onafhankelijke door-lichting van de financiële processen van Staatsolie is geconcludeerd dat het bedrijf in voldoende mate in staat wordt geacht de investering terug te betalen. “We zijn in staat om alle schulden en betalingen in US-dollar te voldoen”, garandeert Moensi. Het gaat om lopende betalingen aan hui-dige leveranciers van goederen en diensten en de nieuwe leningen. Voor de nieuwe leningen is een aflossingsperiode van vijf jaar uitgetrokken.

In de afgelopen vijf jaar heeft Staatsolie bij elkaar een winst voor belastin-gen van ruim US$ 1 miljard geboekt. Met alle vooruitzichten en verwach-tingen is de totale winst vóór belastingen tot 2015 gesteld op US$ 1,5 mil-jard US dollar. Moensi baseert dit op de toekomstige olieprijzen voor de komende vijf jaar, zoals die worden verwacht door PIRA, een internationaal gerenommeerd consultancybedrijf dat gespecialiseerd is in het vergaren, analyseren en interpreteren van data over de olie- en energiemarkt. Moensi noemt de winstprognose van Staatsolie conservatief, omdat Staats-olie een factor van min vijftien procent hanteert van de vooruitzichten door PIRA.

2200ObligatiehoudersHet doel van de obligatielening is om een deel van de financiering van het investeringsprogramma veilig te stellen. Een obligatie is een schuld-bewijs voor een lening die door een onderneming of een instelling is aangegaan. Als een bedrijf geld nodig heeft, kan het een obligatielening uitschrijven om aan de financiering komen. De koper van de obligatie ontvangt van de uitgever een rentevergoeding. De obligatielening was uitgeschreven voor US$ 15 miljoen, waarbij overschrijvingen wel zouden worden geaccepteerd. Na storting van de inschrijvingen op 14 mei kwam het bedrag uit op US$ 55,1 miljoen. Dit bedrag is door ruim 2200 obligatiehouders gestort. De Surinaamsche Bank (DSB Bank) trad op als arrangeur voor de obligatielening. De obligaties zijn uitgegeven in coupures van elk nominaal US$ 100 en veelvouden daarvan tot een maximum van US$ 100,000. De looptijd is vijf jaren, te rekenen vanaf 14 mei 2010. De obligaties dragen een vaste rente van zeven procent per jaar, die twee keer per jaar – op 14 november en 14 mei – betaalbaar wordt gesteld. De aflossing van de obligatielening vindt in zijn geheel plaats op 14 mei 2015.

reputability of our company’, says Managing Director Marc Waaldijk.

‘The developments that have taken place in the past 15 years are

remarkable.’ Waaldijk emphasized Staatsolie’s debt-free position

since 2005.

Transparency

In its financing policy and financing strategy Staatsolie aspires

entering into a financing contract with ‘a number of solid banks,’

says Kortram, ‘some of which would then become our regular

bankers.’ This is a very important element, since implementation

of Staatsolie’s long term plan, Vision 2020, will increase the need

for financing.

Staatsolie preferred a loan guaranteed by two financial institutions with

ample experience in the field of energy financing and the participa-

tion of solid banks. In this phase financing through the international

capital market or multilateral financial institutions was not a priority. The

financing policy did not call for possibilities such as project financing or

financing through credit mediators.

Staatsolie carried out the negotiations on its own, while the consul-

tants had a mere advisory role. Kortram explains that transparency

was an integral part of the process ‘due to the magnitude of the

loans and their subsequent interest.’

Guarantee

Agnes Moensi-Sokowikromo, deputy director Finance, says that it

is the first time in 30 years that Staatsolie turned to the external

credit market and beyond Suriname for a loan of such a magnitude.

‘International banks use ratios to determine whether we will be able

to pay back the loan.’ An impartial investigation into Staatsolie’s

financial processes revealed that the company is amply able to pay

back the investment. ‘We are solid enough to pay back all debts and

other expenses in US dollars’, guarantees Moensi. This comprises

all existing payments to suppliers of goods and services as well as

the new loans. For the new loans a repayment period of five years

has been determined.

In the past five years Staatsolie raked in a gross profit of more than

US$ 1 billion. The expected gross profit for the next five years is

US$ 1.5 billion. Moensi’s calculations are based on prospective oil

prices, predicted by PIRA, an internationally renowned consultancy

firm specialized in gathering, analyzing and interpreting data regard-

ing the oil and energy market. Moensie states that Staatsolie’s

predictions are quite conservative, since the company deducts 15

percent from PIRA’s predictions.

2,200 Bondholders

The objective of the bond loan was to secure part of the financial

means for the investment program. A bond is a promissory note

issued by a company or institution to secure a loan.

The bond loan was issued for US$ 15 million, with the provision that

any exceeding amount would be accepted. After the deposits were

made for the subscriptions on 14 May the total amount was US$

55.1 million. Some 2,200 prospective bondholders subscribed to the

loan. The Surinaamsche Bank (DSB Bank) arranged the bond loan.

Bonds were issued in denominations of US$ 100 notes and multiple

derivatives up to a maximum of US$ 100,000 notes. The duration of

the loan is five years starting 14 May, 2010. The bonds pay seven

percent interest a year, payable twice a year on 14 November and

14 May. The bonds are redeemable on 14 May 2015.

Na het opmaken van de balans na de uiterlijke stortingsdatum van 14 mei bleek er US$ 55,1 miljoen te zijn gestort. In overzicht hieronder de storting per bank van inschrijving.

Not only did arranger De Surinaamsche

Bank (DSB) hand over the official report

regarding the US$ 55.1 million bond loan to

Staatsolie, but the financing contracts for a

US$ 275 million loan were signed with Credit

Suisse and the ING Bank as well.

handed over the US$ 55.1 million check

to Staatsolie Managing Director, Marc

Waaldijk. It is Staatsolie’s first bond loan.

Waaldijk explained that it is the company’s

intention to involve Surinamese investors

and institutes in Staatsolie’s further growth.

‘We are quite pleased that the bond loan

has yielded much more than we had

expected,’ said Waaldijk. He extended his

gratitude to all subscribers for their confidence in Staatsolie. ‘The

company’s national and international reputation has received a boost.’

Waaldijk also said that Staatsolie is engaging into a relationship with

two large external banks in order to forge sustainable business partner

relations. These are necessary requirements for the rapid growth of all

the stakeholders and the Surinamese community.

‘We need not only look at the figures’, said Finance Director Iwan

Kortram, ‘but also what man has developed at Staatsolie.’ Kortram

emphasized that a special Staatsolie team was commissioned for

this loan. Staatsolie could easily have brought in outside experts, but

it decided use its own for the Loan Documentation and International

Project Financing team. This creates involvement, solidarity and team

effort. ‘For the next development phase Suriname will have to rely on

market conformity financing, for which requirements are higher. It is

therefore of the utmost importance to field qualified negotiating teams.’

Natural Resources Minister, Gregory Rusland, represented the sole

shareholder, the State of Suriname. He considers his policy towards

the company a significant factor for securing external financing. ‘This

confirms that we have pursued a sound policy. There is room for

improvement and further approach.’ The minister explained that ample

safeguards have been included to guarantee payback of the loan to

Credit Suise and the ING Bank. A dividend policy has been drafted

which runs until 2015. It stipulates that Staatsolie only has to pay a

Minister Gregory Rusland van Natuurlijke Hulpbronnen vertegen-woordigde de aandeelhouder, de Staat Suriname. Hij beschouwt het beleid van zijn departement naar het bedrijf als een belangrijke factor voor de externe financiering. “Dat is de bevestiging dat er goed beleid is gevoerd. Er is ruimte voor verbetering en verdere aanpak.” Er zijn volgens de bewindsman voldoende garanties ingebouwd dat Credit Suisse en ING Bank hun geld terugkrijgen. Daarom is er een divi-dendbeleid uitgesmeerd tot 2015, waarbij Staatsolie aan het eind van elk boekjaar een vast percentage van de nettowinst aan dividend hoeft af te dragen aan de aandeelhouder. Deze maatregel garandeert dat Staatsolie aan haar terugbetalingsverplichtingen kan voldoen. Minister Rusland verwacht dat komende regeringen dat ook respecteren.

obligations. Minister Rusland expects the next government

to honor this agreement.

Credit Suise representative, Isander Santiago, is pleased

with Staatsolie’s degree of independence from the share-

holder. ‘This is the sort of company that can bring change

to a society. We feel impelled to help push the further

growth of Staatsolie.’ Credit Suise has not only assessed

the company’s financial position, but the macro-economic

rating of Suriname as well. Marc Sizou da Silva of the ING

Bank stated that the solid and excellently managed com-

pany and the potential growth of the industry have been the

parameters for granting Staatsolie the loan. ‘It’s a pleasure

to support such a company because we would like to see

our relationship expand.’

US$ 57.2 million was subscribed for the bond loan.

Between 3 and 14 May US$ 55.1 million was deposited.

Some subscribers failed to make the deposits, while the

DSB Bank did not award a few of the subscriptions after

imposing strict rules. Critics say that the exchange rate

took flight due to the bond loan, but Proeve denied such

claims stating that most of the deposits were transfers. He

explained that the exchange rate would have been affected

by an SRD loan (SRD = Surinamese currency), because

then Staatsolie would have to buy its dollars from the local

market to finance its imports.

Op de obligatielening was ingeschreven voor US$ 57,2 miljoen. Tussen 3 en 14 mei is een bedrag van US$ 55,1 miljoen gestort. Enkele inschrijvers heb-ben niet gestort en de DSB Bank heeft enkele inschrijvingen na strenge con-trole niet toegewezen. Volgens critici heeft de obligatielening de wisselkoers omhoog gestuwd. Proeve wees deze kritiek van de hand door te benadrukken dat 99% van de stortingen per bank zijn gegaan en niet per kas. Hij zei dat juist een lening in SRD de koers zou hebben opgedreven: Staatsolie had dan US-dollars uit de lokale markt moeten opkopen om de import te kunnen financieren.

Staatsolie bestaat 30 jaar op 13 december 2010 en de bijdrage is een cadeau aan de Surinaamse gemeenschap. De schenking werd door algemeen direc-

teur Marc Waaldijk bekendgemaakt bij de viering van het 70-jarig jubileum van het Surinaamse Rode Kruis (SRK) op 20 juni. Waaldijk wees erop dat Staatsolie graag ondersteunt, omdat veilig bloed beschikbaar moet zijn voor elke Surinamer.

Het project houdt in dat de Nationale Bloedbank een nieuw onderkomen krijgt, terwijl het oud gebouw wordt gerenoveerd. Aanschaf van apparatuur en inrichting horen ook erbij. Na afronding van dit project zal de Nationale Bloedbank opti-maler kunnen voorzien in de behoefte aan bloedproducten die voldoen aan de hoogste internationale eisen.

Dagelijks hebben de ziekenhuizen in Suriname tientallen eenheden bloed nodig voor De beschikbaarheid van veilig bloed kan het verschil maken tussen leven en dood. De Nationale Bloedbank is de enige producent en leverancier van bloed en bloedproducten in Suriname. De bloedproducten worden gemaakt uit bloed dat donoren regelmatig, vrijwillig en zonder betaling afstaan.

De band tussen Staatsolie en de Nationale Bloedbank bestaat al lang. In 2000, bij het twintigjarig bestaan van Staatsolie, werd de Bloedbank ondersteund met apparatuur. En al jaren staan medewerkers bloed af, waarbij de Bloedbank op gezette tijden de verschillende werklocaties aandoet om bloed van donoren af te nemen.

A Present for the National Blood Bank

Staatsolie has donated US$ 2 million for the Building

and Renovation National Blood bank project.

On 13 December 2010 Staatsolie will celebrate its

30th anniversary. The donation to the Blood bank is

a present to the Surinamese society to commemo-

rate this event. Staatsolie’s managing director Marc

Waaldijk announced the donation at the celebration of

the 70th anniversary of the Suriname Red Cross on

June 20. Waaldijk emphasized that Staatsolie is eager

to help, because safe donor blood must be available

for every Surinamese citizen.

The project comprises a new building, renovation of

the old building that formerly housed the Blood Bank

and the purchase and installation of new equipment.

After completion of the project the National Blood

Bank will be able to optimize the supply of high-quali-

ty blood derivatives that meet international standards.

Several units of donor blood are needed every day in

Surinamese hospitals. Having safe blood at their dis-

posal could make a decisive difference. The National

Blood bank is the only producer and supplier of blood

and derivatives in Suriname. Blood derivatives are

made from blood, which is frequently freely and vol-

untarily supplied by donors.

Staatsolie and the National Blood bank have a long-

standing relationship. In 2000, at Staatsolie’s 20th anni-

versary, the Blood Bank received a donation in the form

of equipment. Staatsolie staff has been donating blood

for years now. At frequent intervals the Blood Bank visits

several Staatsolie locations for a blood drive.


Deze opleiding is dit jaar in februari begonnen met twaalf studenten, van wie er tien bij Staatsolie werken. Vanwege de complexiteit van de geologie en

de productiekenmerken van de oliereservoirs is het noodzakelijk dat deze mede-werkers zich verder specialiseren in petroleumgeologie. Via specifieke interne trainingen en buitenlandse cursussen hebben zij hun kennis uitgebreid. De mas-teropleiding biedt hen de mogelijkheid om hun deskundigheid verder te vergroten in Suriname zelf.

Uniek“De masteropleiding is uniek in de wereld,” zegt professor Theo Wong, een van de coördinatoren van de opleiding. “Het curriculum dat we voor deze opleiding hebben samengesteld, wordt op geen enkele andere universiteit in de wereld zo verzorgd. Wel kunnen er raakvlakken met andere opleidingen zijn.” De andere coördinator, Ewald Poetisi van de Faculteit der Technologische Weten-schappen, hoopt dat de opleiding ook internationaal de belangstelling trekt. “Het is de bedoeling dat studenten uit de regio en Latijns-Amerika deze opleiding hier komen volgen.” De masteropleiding Petroleumgeologie is een project van de studierichting Delf-stofproductie van de Faculteit der Technologische Wetenschappen van de Anton de Kom Universiteit van Suriname in samenwerking met Staatsolie, de Techni-sche Universiteit Delft, de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam, de Universiteit van Utrecht en het Nederlands Instituut voor Toegepaste Geowetenschappen TNO.

StuderenenwerkenDe colleges worden verzorgd door docenten van de buitenlandse opleidingen. Voor elk vak is er een Surinaamse counterpart, die zorgt voor verdere begelei-ding van de studenten. Het theoretisch gedeelte van de opleiding zal ongeveer anderhalf jaar duren, waarna de studenten zes maanden zullen werken aan een afstudeerscriptie.Rakesh Ramdajal studeert aan de masteropleiding. Hij vindt het heel zwaar om de intensieve studie – een collegedag duurt van 8.00 tot 16.00 uur – te combi-neren met zijn werk als productiegeoloog bij Staatsolie. “Het weekend gebruik ik om werk waaraan ik op collegedagen niet ben toegekomen, af te maken.” Veel tijd voor privé- of familieactiviteiten heeft hij niet. Ook na vier uur ’s mid-dags moet hij dringende werkzaamheden direct aanpakken. Maar Rakesh heeft één doel voor ogen: zijn Msc-titel. “Als je kijkt naar sollicitatieoproepen van

More Specialist Cadre Through Masters Degree Petrolem Geology

Staatsolie needs more specialists in the field of geol-

ogy and petroleum in order to realize its strategic

goals. The company therefore finances the two-year

masters course in Petroleum Geology at the Anton de

Kom University.

The masters’ course started in February this year

with twelve students, ten of which are employed by

Staatsolie. The complexity of geology and production

characteristics of oil reservoirs compellingly dictates a

further specialization of these employees in petroleum

geology. Internal company training and foreign courses

have provided the necessary extension of knowledge.

The masters’ course now offers the possibility to

enhance the expertise at home.

Unique

The masters course is unique in the world, says pro-

fessor Theo Wong, one of the two coordinators of the

course. ‘The curriculum we’ve compiled isn’t taught at

any other university in the world, but there might be

common grounds with other courses.’ Ewald Poetisi

the other coordinator of the Technological Faculty,

hopes to attract international attention. ‘We aim at

having students from the region and Latin America

here.’ The masters course Petroleum Geology is a

joint project of the Minerals Production discipline at

the Technological Faculty and Staatsolie, the Technical

University Delft, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the

University of Utrecht, the Dutch Institute for Applied

Geo Sciences TNO.

Studying and a Full Time Job

Classes will be taught by teachers from the foreign

institutes. Surinamese counterparts in every subject

will further supervise the students. Theory classes

will take approximately a year and a half, after which

the students have six months to work on their thesis.

Rakesh Ramdajal is one of these students. Combining

the intensive study with his full time job as Production

Geologist at Staatsolie is not easy. Classes are from

8 am till 4 pm. ‘I use the weekends to do those things

I don’t have time for when I’m attending classes.’ He

does not have much time for private or family matters.

After classes he has to attend to urgent job issues at

once. But Rakesh has one goal in mind: his Master

degree. ‘In foreign job ads a masters degree is a require-

ment for a position as Junior Geologist.’ Applying the

newly gained knowledge at once is also a plus.

Accreditation

Staatsolie applies international standards in not only

its production operations and administrative processes,

but in training its staff as well. The process for accredi-

tation has already been set in. Consultant Diny Peters

Zij verzorgde in mei een presentatie over accreditatie voor deskundigen van Staatsolie en de opleidingscoördinatoren. Het heeft er veel weg van dat de masterstudie Petroleumgeologie als een van de eerste opleidingen in Suriname wordt geaccrediteerd.Accreditatie heeft als hoofddoelen het bevorderen van de kwaliteit van het hoger onderwijs en het waarborgen van de regionale en de internationale vergelijkbaar-heid van opleidingen in het hoger onderwijs. Bij accreditatie van de opleiding, bestaat er geen enkele twijfel dat deze niet voldoet aan de minimale voorwaarden. Een voordeel hiervan is, meent Peters, dat afgestudeerden gemakkelijk hun PhD bij een andere universiteit kunnen doen. Dit “keurmerk” zal afgegeven worden door het Nationaal Orgaan voor de Accreditatie (NOVA). De accreditatie geschiedt conform het kader van het Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatie Orgaan (NVAO). “Vóór augustus volgend jaar is de opleiding geaccrediteerd”, verzekert Peters. Deze garantie durft ze te geven, omdat bijna alle voorbereidingen zijn getroffen.

explains that ‘this course meets international require-

ments and is certified.’ In May, last, she held a pre-

sentation on accreditation for Staatsolie experts and

the coordinators of the course. The masters degree

in Petroleum Geology might be the first Surinamese

course to receive accreditation. The main objectives

of accreditation are to improve the quality of higher

education and to guarantee regional and interna-

tional comparability of courses in higher education.

Accreditation takes away every doubt about disparity

in meeting minimal requirements. One of the advan-

tages is that graduates can easily study for their PhD

at another (foreign) university. This certification will

be awarded by the National Institute for Accreditation

(NOVA) and will be in line with guidelines set by the

Nederlands-Vlaams Accreditatie Orgaan – Dutch

Accreditation Institute – (NVAO). Peters guarantees

that the course will be accredited before August next

year. She is certain because all preparations are

already in place.

3D at Industry Fair

Life-like pictures of pipelines that appear out of

the ground only to disappear in the gound again

at a distance. Or vivid pictures of emloyees. This

year visitors to the Made in Suriname Industry Fair

were once again introduced to several Staatsolie’s

operations.

The Staatsolie booth was furnished with large three

dimensional (3D) wall pictures. Brayen Liendie, who

works with the Staatsolie power company, supplied

the necessary information and was more than will-

ing to give a tour. He answered many questions

on how the power company functions. For other

Staatsolie operations the visitors could turn to staff

from those fields. Some of the visitors were so

impressed by what they were presented that they

quietly informed when they could apply for a job.

A Staatsolie brochure was available for the visitors

and they could participate in a quiz with handsome

prizes, including a BlackBerry smart phone, a digital

photo camera and an iPod. With the prospect of

winning those prizes it was no wonder that visitors

swarmed the booth to take part in the quiz. There

sprookjesbos”, verzuchtte een van de bezoekers tijdens een rondleiding door de stand. Voor informatie over de andere activiteiten van Staatsolie konden belangstellenden terecht bij medewerkers van die disciplines. Sommige mensen waren zo onder de indruk van alle activiteiten van Staatsolie, dat ze vroegen wanneer ze mochten solliciteren.

Tijdens de beurs zijn brochures over Staatsolie uitgedeeld aan het publiek. De recla-me-items zoals pennen, potloden, tassen en bekers, waren zeer gewild. Meer dan drieduizend mensen deden mee aan de speciale beursquiz. Onder de winnaars zijn prijzen verloot zoals een BlackBerry smartphone, een digitale fotocamera en een iPod. Glenn Sairras, directeur Production & Development, nam een kijkje op de beurs. Hij vindt dat Staatsolie moet blijven deelnemen aan de beurs. Hij was tevreden over de manier waarop Staatsolie zich presenteerde, zowel wat materiaal als benadering van de bezoekers betrof.

satchels and mugs. It was quite a sight at the fair.

Almost every visitor had a yellow Staatsolie bag

on the back. Glenn Sairras, Director Production

& Development paid a complementary visit. He

stated that Staatsolie should continue its presence

on the annual fair. Sairras was quite content with

Staatsolie’s performance at the fair, particularly with

the graphic material and the manner in which the

staff interacted with visitors.

In de machinekamer maakt het oorver-dovende geluid van draaiende motoren

elk gesprek onmogelijk. Oordopjes zijn er verplicht. Op een platform staan de twee splinternieuwe machines die straks de extra energie gaan opwekken. Op het terrein rondom de centrale zijn medewerkers, van wie sommige op stellages, hard aan het werk om de laatste hand aan de werkzaamheden te leggen.

ApparatuurDe planning was om de uitbreiding te vol-tooien binnen zes maanden na onderteke-ning van het contract voor de levering van de machines. In september 2009 werden offertes aangevraagd bij MAN, Wärtsilä en Caterpil-lar voor de dieselgeneratoren en overige apparatuur. In november 2009 sloten SPCS en Caterpillar een overeenkomst voor de levering van twee dieselmotoren met genera-toren en bijbehorende installaties. Elke motor heeft een vermogen van zeven megawatt en kan draaien op normale en extra zware stook-olie. “Bij deze uitbreiding wordt, anders dan in fase 1, geen warmtekrachtkoppeling toegepast. Er wordt dus geen stoom meer opgewekt voor de raffinaderij”, vertelt Eddy Fränkel, Project Manager SPCS Phase II. “De nieuwe raffinaderij zal over grote hoe-veelheden afvalwarmte beschikken en kan dan zelf stoom opwekken.“

UitdagingDe werkzaamheden voor dit uitbreidings-project zijn in eigen beheer uitgevoerd. De mechanische en elektrische installatie is vol-ledig verzorgd door lokale contractors. Tech-nici van Caterpillar waren verantwoordelijk voor de opstartwerkzaamheden “Het was een grote uitdaging om al het werk te sprei-den over de verschillende contractors. We moesten goed rekening houden met het korte tijdsbestek en hun individuele capaciteiten”, vertelt Fränkel. Caterpillar leverde de generatoren en ver-schillende installaties in drie verschepingen. In afwachting van de apparatuur werden in Suriname alvast de pijpleidingen, kabelba-nen en kabels aangelegd. Fränkel: “Bij aan-komst van de installaties was het slechts een kwestie van aansluiten.” De meeste tijd ging zitten in de installatie van pijpleidingen.

De elektriciteitscentrale van Staatsolie Power Company Suriname (SPCS) produ-ceert binnenkort twee keer zoveel stroom; de opwekkingscapaciteit wordt verhoogd

van 14 naar 28 MW.

Staatsolie Power Company Suriname (SPCS) will soon pro-

duce twice as much energy as now; its generating capacity

will be boosted from 14 to 28 MW.

The deafening sound in the engine room makes talking

impossible. Ear protection is an obligatory requirement. Two

brand new engines will generate the extra electrical energy

soon. Outside the power station crews, some of which on

raised platforms, are busy putting the final touch to the prepa-

rations

Equipment

The planning called for completion of the expansion within

six months after signing the contract for delivery of the

machines. In September 2009 quotations were requested

from MAN, Wärtsilä and Caterpillar for diesel generators

and other equipment. SPCS and Caterpilar signed an

agreement in November 2009 for delivery of two diesel

engines and generators including all accessories. Each of

the engines has a capacity of 7 megawatt and can operate

on regular or heavy fuel oil. ‘This expansion will not require

steam power pairing like in phase 1. We won’t be generating

steam for the refinery’, says Eddy Fränkel, Project Manager

SPCS Phase II. The new refinery will have an abundance of

excess steam, so it will be self sufficient.

Challenge

SPCS had it own staff on the expansion project. The

mechanical and electrical installations were done by local

contractors. Caterpillar technicians did the starting up. ‘It was

quite a challenge to have the several contractors do the job.

We had to take into consideration the short time span and

the contractors’ individual capacities’, says Fränkel.

Caterpillar deliveries were in three stages. Pending arrival of

the equipment, the pipelines and cable work were installed.

Fränkel: ‘It was just a matter of connecting upon arrival.’

Construction of the pipelines consumed most of the time.

Fränkel: ‘The installations have been completed. The final

test will be by the end of June and we are eagerly looking

forward to the result!’

More expansions

Fränkel has been with the power station since its estab-

lishment. He explains that SPCS could not utilize its full

potential in the starting-up phase because there was a very

limited outlet for the energy. That has changed now. Fränkel

knows for a fact that the demand for electrical energy is

rising and this will surely necessitate more expansions.

‘However, I’m content with the power station’s performance,

given the circumstances, and I’m also pleased with the

employees performance and development. They are able to

operate and maintain the station and can repair outages on

their own.’

In January 2010 Fränkel passed the torch to Arnie Kleiboer,

the new Operations Manager at SPCS. Fränkel is now the

new Manager Hydro with the Business Development direc-

torate. He will develop the TapaJai Hydro Power Project.

MeeruitbreidingenFränkel is sinds de oprichting betrokken geweest bij de centrale. Hij zegt dat de SPCS-organisatie haar potentie in de beginfase niet volledig heeft kunnen ont-wikkelen door de beperkte afname van elektriciteit. Gelukkig is dat nu veran-derd. Volgens Fränkel groeit de vraag naar elektrische energie waardoor al bijna vaststaat dat er meer uitbreidingen op komst zijn. “Al met al ben ik tevreden met de performance van de centrale onder de huidige omstandigheden én met het niveau dat de medewerkers hebben bereikt. Ze zijn in staat zelfstandig de centrale te draaien, te onderhouden en adequaat storingen te verhelpen als die zich voordoen.” In januari 2010 heeft Fränkel de fakkel overgedragen aan Arnie Kleiboer, de nieuwe Operations Manager bij SPCS. Fränkel gaat zich als Manager Hydro bij het directoraat Business Development toeleggen op ontwikkeling van het Tapa-Jaiproject, dat is gericht op de opwekking van elektriciteit uit waterkracht.

Twee van deze machines zullen zorgen voor verhoging van de opwekcapaciteit van 14 naar 28 megawatt.

The Staatsolie Refinery Expansion Project EPC Contract Awarded to Saipem

The Italian Firm Saipem has been awarded the detail engi-

neering, the procurement of equipment and the construction

(EPC)of the new installations of the refinery. The contract

covering the construction phase of the Refinery Expansion

Project (REP) was signed on 4 June 2010.

With the signing the seven-year preparatory phase, with its

various studies and design phases, was completed. ‘Seven

years seem to be a magical number’, said Managing Director

Marc Waaldijk at the signing ceremony. ‘It took us seven years

to build the existing refinery.’ The same circumstances have

surfaced. A definite choice regarding the end products had to

be made. Furthermore there have to be ample oil reserves

and a constant daily production of 16,000 barrels a day to

justify the expansion. Financing the project also required thor-

ough study of several scenarios. Waaldijk reminded his audi-

ence that at the construction of the first phase every obstacle

was taken and he promised that the same holds good for

now. He is convinced that the company has found a good

contractor in Saipem and that Staatsolie has the right team

for the job. ‘It is a good start, but we are just at the beginning.

Let’s make it work!’ Ettore Maria Magnani, Saipem’s Vice

President Onshore Bid Management, said the project was

‘quite a challenge’ for his company.

Agreement

On 22 February 2010 four candidates, selected out of a

group of 75, submitted their bids. Tom Ketele, REP Project

Project uitbreiding Staatsolieraffinaderij

Daarmee is een voorbereidingstraject van zeven jaren afgesloten waarin ver-schillende studies en ontwerpfasen zijn uitgevoerd. “Zeven jaar lijkt wel

magisch”, zei algemeen directeur Marc Waaldijk bij de ondertekening. “Het heeft ons ook zeven jaar gekost om de huidige raffinaderij te bouwen.” Volgens Waaldijk spelen nu min of meer dezelfde zaken als toen. Er moest een keuze worden gemaakt voor de producten die de nieuwe raffinaderij zal voortbrengen. Verder moeten er voldoende oliereserves zijn en een olieproductie van 16.000 vaten per dag om de uitbreiding te rechtvaardigen. Ook over de wijze waarop het project zou worden gefi-nancierd, moesten verschillende scenario’s worden bestudeerd. Waaldijk herinnerde eraan dat bij de bouw van de huidige raffinaderij alle hordes zijn genomen en dat ook nu weer alles goed komt. Hij is ervan overtuigd dat met Saipem een goede contractor is geselecteerd en dat Staatsolie het juiste team in huis heeft voor de job. “Het is een goede start, maar pas het begin. Let’smakeitwork!” Ettore Maria Magnani, Vice Presi-dent Onshore Bid Management van Saipem noemde dit project “een hele uitdaging” voor het bedrijf.

OvereenstemmingOp 22 februari 2010 hebben vier kandidaten uit een selectie van 75 bedrijven hun offerte uitgebracht. Tom Ketele, Project Manager REP, vertelt dat dit een zeer intensief proces was. “Alles moest binnen drie weken worden afgerond. Om de aanbiedingen zo effectief mogelijk te evalueren werd het projectteam opgedeeld in groepen en aan het werk gezet.” De evaluatie vond plaats in een streng beveiligde ruimte die alleen toegankelijk was voor het team. Na een grondige beoordeling van de offertes op com-merciële, technische en juridische aspecten kwam Saipem uiteindelijk als de meest geschikte aannemer uit de bus. De onderhandelingen zijn gestart op 26 april en op 15 mei bereikten partijen overeenstemming. Bij de onderhandelingen heeft Staatsolie veel aandacht besteed aan de positieve effecten van dit project op de Surinaamse

economie, de werkgelegenheid en de betrok-kenheid van Surinaamse bedrijven bij de constructie werkzaamheden.

UitvoeringHet contract met Saipem heeft een loop-tijd van drie jaar en vertegenwoordigt een waarde van US$ 500 miljoen. Met deze contractondertekening begint de uitvoerings-fase of EPC van het project. EPC staat voor Engineering, Procurement & Construction. In deze fase geschieden het detailontwerp, de aankoop van nieuwe materialen en de con-structie. Bij een EPC-overeenkomst voert de contractor het project uit voor een afgespro-ken bedrag, zoals een aannemer een huis oplevert aan de eigenaar. In december 2009 werd de laatste vooront-werpfase afgerond – met als resultaat het basisontwerp. In de EPC-fase wordt dit ontwerp in detail uitgewerkt tot constructiete-keningen. Een deel van het REP-team zal binnenkort naar Italië afreizen om over de schouder van de contractor mee te kijken naar het detailontwerp. Ketele is tevreden met wat tot nu toe is bereikt. Volgens hem is “een grondig traject” afgerond. “Na elke fase hebben we geëvalueerd en besluiten genomen voor de volgende fase: ‘wat willen we, hoe willen we het en wanneer gaan we het doen?’ We hebben ervoor gezorgd dat aan het begin van elke fase van het project alle denkwerk werd gedaan.”

OrganisatieIn de komende periode zal er hard gewerkt worden aan de verdere organisatiever-steviging van het projectteam om de leden voor te bereiden op de nieuwe fase. Het huidige projectteam telt 25 mensen, maar zal gaandeweg worden uitgebreid. Er is een HRM-specialist aangetrokken om de bemensing van het project zo effectief en efficiënt mogelijk te laten geschieden. Ben Nuboer, directeur Refining & Marketing, zal zich vanaf 1 juli gedurende anderhalf jaar fulltime bezighouden met het project. Ketele waardeert het werk dat de teamleden tot nu toe hebben verzet. “De motivatie zit er goed in. Ze doen veel meer dan wordt vereist en ik denk dat deze attitude de grootste bijdrage is geweest aan het succes tot nu toe.”

Manager, explains how intensive this

process was. ‘We had to get through

it all within three weeks. In order to

assess the bids effectively the project

team was split into groups and put to

the task.’ The assessment took place in

a highly secured room, accessible only

to project team members. After thor-

ough assessment of the commercial,

technical and legal aspects, Saipem

was profiled as the best candidate for

the job. Negotiations started on 26 April

and parties reached an agreement on

15 May. In the negotiations Staatsolie

focused much on the positive effects

of this project for the Surinamese

economy, the employment aspect and

involvement of Surinamese businesses

in the construction phase.

Engineering

Three-year EPC-contract worth US$ 500 million. The signing

of the contract marks the start of the engineering phase or

EPC. This phase covers the detail design, the procurement of

new equipment and the construction. In the EPC the contrac-

tor carries out the project for an agreed sum, just like when a

contractor is building a house for an owner.

In

December 2009 the final pre-design phase was completed,

yielding the basic design. In the EPC phase this design is

detailed into construction blueprints. A REP delegation will

soon leave for Italy to watch from close by how the detail

design comes about. Ketele is quite content with the progress

so far. ‘We’ve completed a tough course. We’ve made an

evaluation after every phase and then decided on what we

wanted, how we wanted it and when we were going to do it

in the next phase. We had the mental process covered at the

start of every phase.’

Organization

In the time ahead, the project team will have to strengthen its

organizational structure in order to be prepared for the next

phase. Currently the project team has 25 members, but this

will have to be expanded. An HRM specialist has been hired

for effective and efficient manning of the team. Ben Nuboer,

Director Refining & Marketing, will be assigned full time to the

project for 18 months starting 1 July. Ketele praises the work

done so far by the team members. ‘They are highly motivated,

doing more than is required from them and I think that it is

this attitude that has yielded the success so far.’

Het Raffinaderij Expansie Project is een van de concrete doelstellingen van het Strategisch Plan 2008-2012. Het REP moet leiden tot:• verdubbeling van de verwerkingscapaciteit van de raffina-

derij tot 15.000 barrels per dag;• productie van eindproducten van hoge kwaliteit waaronder

diesel en gasoline voor de lokale markt;• verhoging van de inkomsten voor Staatsolie en de overheid. De nieuwe raffinaderij moet volgens plan in 2013 gereed zijn en gasoline, stookolie, asfaltbitumen en premiumdiesel voor de lokale markt produceren en zwavelzuur voor de export. Het overschot aan diesel zal ook worden geëxporteerd.

The Refinery Expansion Project is one of the concrete objectives of the 2008-2012 Strategic Plan. The REP must result in: Ø doubling the processing capacity of the refinery to 15,000 barrels a day;Ø producing high quality end products including diesel and gasoline for

the local market;Ø increasing Staatsolie and government revenues.The new refinery must be completed as planned in 2013, producing gaso-line, fuel oil, asphalt bitumen and premium diesel for the local market as well as sulphuric acid for the export. The diesel surplus will also be exported.

Inzet“Staatsolie stelt scherpe doelen”, zegt Reena, “en iedereen zet zich in om dat grote doel te bereiken.” Robert is, als ‘nieuweling’, onder de indruk van de inzet die bij Staatsolie vanaf de oprichting wordt getoond. “De mensen van het eerste uur zijn doorgegaan, zij hebben niet opgegeven.” Robert weet dat er zonder inzet geen resultaat is. Hij heeft Offshore Engineering gestudeerd aan de TU Delft (Nederland). “Inzet moest, het was geen keuze.” Reena: “De sfeer bij Staatsolie motiveert om je in te zetten. Iedere medewerker heeft zijn of haar eigen motiva-tie, maar ik denk dat de wil om hogerop te komen een belangrijke stuwende fac-tor is.” Reena begon acht jaren geleden als Administrative Assistant bij de Finan-ciële Administratie, maar bleef doorstuderen. Nu is zij General Ledger Assistant II bij de afdeling Grootboekadministratie. “Je ziet mensen om je heen doorstuderen en doorstromen. Bijna automatisch wil je dan niet achterblijven.”“Inzet is vanzelfsprekend, het hoort erbij”, meent Robert. “Iedereen heeft een bijdrage in het proces. Hij ziet hiervan dagelijks voorbeelden bij ‘zijn’ afdeling Drilling, waar hij werkt als Drilling Engineer. “Jarenlang in shifts werken is zwaar en vergt een grote inzet, begeestering eigenlijk”, zegt hij bewonderend over het boorpersoneel dat in ploegendiensten werkt.

InspiratieZowel Reena als Robert putten inspiratie uit de geschiedenis van Staatsolie. Robert: “Als student heb ik in Nederland op een conferentie Eddie Jharap en Marny Daal (respectievelijkoud-directeurenhuidigemanagerPetroleumCon-tracts…red.) ontmoet. We raakten aan de praat en ik mocht bij hen aan tafel aanschuiven. En daar zat ik dan, met de directeur en een manager van Staatsolie. Voor mij een geweldige eer. De manier waarop ze met mij omgingen en spraken over Staatsolie en Suriname, dát was inspirerend.” “Staatsolie op zich is een inspirerend bedrijf”, vindt Reena. “Je hoeft alleen maar naar onze geschiedenis te kijken, van niets naar iets. Ondanks de beperkte mid-delen en tegenslagen is een droom gerealiseerd.” Zij meent dat de huidige gene-ratie, geïnspireerd door de pioniers, die droom verder kan verwezenlijken.

DeskundigheidStaatsolie streeft ernaar steeds de juiste deskundigheid in huis hebben. Dat doet zij niet alleen door experts te werven, maar ook door medewerkers te laten trai-nen en opleiden. Staatsolie beschikt over “uitstekend opgeleide en toegewijde

Efforts Are Obvious; They Are Part of the Process

Reena Rambaran Mishre-Ramdin and Robert Rodgers have

two numbers in common: they are both thirty years old and

they are both tied to an eight for the time employed by the

company – Reena eight years and Robert eight months. They

discuss efforts, inspiration, expertise and involvement.

Effort

‘Staatsolie requires clear-cut objectives’, says Reena, and

every individual works towards realizing the big goal.’ ‘Rookie’

Robert is filled with awe for the efforts made at Staatsolie

since its establishment. ‘The pioneers have pushed through

and haven’t given up.’ Robert understands that there will be no

achievements without efforts. He studied Offshore Engineering

at TU Delft (The Netherlands). Efforts were compulsory; it

wasn’t a choice.’ Reena: ‘The work environment at Staatsolie

inspires people to work. Every employee has his or her own

motivation, but I think that the urge to advance is a great

incentive.’ Reena started eight years ago as Administrative

Assistant at the Finance Administration. She continued study-

ing and now holds the position of General Ledger Assistant

II at the General Ledger department. ‘You see people around

you studying further and advancing. Naturally you don’t want

to leg behind.’

Efforts are obvious; they are part of the process’, says Robert.

‘Everybody has a share in the process.’ There are numerous

examples every day at Drilling, where he works as a Drilling

Engineer. ‘Working in shifts year after year is quite arduous and

it requires a great deal of effort, or better yet enthusiasm’, says

Robert, revealing his awe for the drilling crews working in shifts.

Inspiration

Reena and Robert are both inspired by Staatsolie’s history.

Robert: ‘When I was a student I met Eddie Jharap and Marny

Daal (former Managing Director and now Manager Petroleum

Contracts respectively … ed. staff) at a conference. We started

talking and they invited me over to their table. And there I was with

the Staatsolie Managing Director and one of its managers. It was

a great honor. It was really inspiring the respect they showed me

and to hear them discussing Staatsolie and Suriname.’

‘Staatsolie is an inspiring company, argues Reena. ‘Just look at our

history: we have gone from zero to greatness. Despite the lack of

resources and the set backs, we have made a dream come true.’

Reena is convinced that the present generation, will, inspired by

the pioneers, be able to further materialize that dream.

Expertise

Staatsolie aspires to have the right expertise available. This is

not only realized by hiring experts, but also by training its staff.

who are good at their job.

‘You don’t have to know everything in detail about your

field of expertise, as long as you know where to find

the knowledge’, says Robert. ‘The work environment

is very important for the development of expertise,

because in this way employees could learn from each

other. The more expertise you have, the better for you

to share”.

To Reena it is a matter of ‘being an expert in your

own field and doing your job well.’ Gaining more in-

depth knowledge and professionalism are necessary

requirements which add to her ambition to advance.

She is pleased that she had her share in drafting the

2009 Annual Report. ‘Staatsolie has enough experts in

every field to lift the company to greater heights.’

Involvement

‘People like to be involved in anything. It creates better

relations,’ says Robert. He emphasizes that Staatsolie

not only shows involvement with its own staff, but with

the entire Surinamese community. He points to the

support for sports, cultural, social and educational

initiatives. ‘The emission of the Staatsolie Bonds is in

my opinion also involving the community in the further

growth of Staatsolie.’

‘At the Finance Administration everybody is

involved in everything,’ explains Reena, talking

about involvement. ‘Involvement covers everything,

from work to those nice things we do after work. It

is a very close family’.

Verdieping en professionalisering zijn noodzakelijk en dragen bij aan haar ambitie om hogerop te komen. Het geeft haar voldoening dat zij heeft kunnen bijdragen aan de samenstelling van de jaarrekening over het boekjaar 2009. “Bij Staatsolie zijn er genoeg deskundigen op elk gebied om het bedrijf naar grotere hoogten te stuwen.”

Betrokkenheid“Mensen willen graag ergens bij betrokken worden. Het zorgt voor betere ver-houdingen”, zegt Robert. Hij onderstreept dat Staatsolie niet alleen betrokkenheid toont met de eigen medewerkers, maar met de totale Surinaamse samenleving. Hij verwijst naar de ondersteuning van initiatieven in sport, cultuur, maatschap-pij en onderwijs. “Met de uitgifte van de obligatielening heeft Staatsolie mijns inziens de gemeenschap ook betrokken bij de verdere groei.”“Bij de Financiële Administratie wordt een ieder bij alles betrokken”, illustreert Reena de onderlinge betrokkenheid. “Zowel in het werk als bij de leuke dingen die we samen daarna doen. Het is bij ons een hechte familie.”

WieiswieReenaRambaranMishre-Ramdin kwam op 1 februari 2002 in dienst als Administrative Assistant II bij Finance Administration. Per 1 januari 2008 werd ze bevorderd tot Account Payable Assistant I, en sinds 1 juli 2008 werkt zij als General Ledger Assistent II op de Groot-boekadministratie.

RobertRodgers, Drilling Engineer, werkt sinds 1 september 2009 bij Staatsolie, op de afdeling Drilling.

Who’s who Reena Rambaran Mishre-Ramdin entered ser-vice on 1 February 2002 as Administrative Assistant II at the Finance Administration. On 1 January she made Account Payable Assistant I and since 1 July 2008 she works as General Ledger Assistant II at the General Ledger department.

Kirsten heeft ervaren dat het niet meevalt om ver van familie en vrien-den in een ander land te wonen. Toen de jonge atlete in 2008 hoorde

dat ze in het buitenland kon gaan wonen en trainen, verheugde zich op de beste trainers, moderne leermiddelen en goede Amerikaanse scholen. Dat het in het begin zo moeilijk zou zijn, had ze niet verwacht.

TalentKirsten was in 2007 begonnen met de middelbare school (VWO). Als junior had ze uitstekend gepresteerd op de 100 en 200 meter: ze bracht een aantal nationale wedstrijden op haar naam. Ook bij regionale wed-strijden deed ze het goed. Pogingen om aan een buitenlandse studiebeurs te komen, hadden niet het gewenste resultaat. Het leek erop dat een groot atletiektalent niet helemaal tot bloei zou komen. Totdat Quinn Fung A Wing in beeld kwam. Deze geboren Surinamer vertrok in 1992 als tiener naar de VS om te studeren en aan atletiek te doen. Ook na zijn studie is Quinn voor Suriname uitgekomen bij internationale atletiekwedstrijden. Hij vestigde zich in Florida. “In 2007 was mijn moeder met vakantie in de VS. Ze vertelde over de veelbelovende pupil Kirsten. Ze had graag dat dit talent niet verloren ging en we bespraken enkele opties. In december 2007 kwam ik met vakantie naar Suriname. Ik heb Kirsten zien lopen, op trainingen meegemaakt en zag ook het talent. Ik heb met de atletiekbond gesproken en samen zijn wij op zoek gegaan naar fondsen om het mogelijk te maken dat Kirsten in Amerika kon komen wonen, studeren en trainen. Er is gesproken met verschillende mensen, instanties en organisaties, waaronder het Staatsolie Sportfonds. Het sportfonds was op basis van het projectdossier bereid een bijdrage te leveren. Kirsten kon haar droom gaan waarmaken.”

Heimwee“In het begin vond ik het eng”, kijkt Kirsten terug. “Ik had heimwee, kon de taal niet vlot spreken en was daarom bang om met mensen te praten.

Kirsten Nieuwendam Set for the Next Sprint

Kirsten Nieuwendam (18) lives and studies in Florida, USA since July

2008. Her athletic skills have been given a boost in Florida. Because of

her excellent performance rate she received a scholarship for the presti-

gious Pennsylvania State University.

Kirsten has experienced first hand that it is not easy to live apart

from family and friends far away in another country. When the

young athlete was told in 2008 that she would be living and train-

ing abroad, she was exited about the prospect of having the best

trainers, modern educational tools and going to excellent American

schools. She had not expected the start to be that difficult.

Talent

Kirsten started high school in 2007 (University preparatory). As a

junior she had an excellent track record on the 100 and 200 meters

with her name tied to a number of national tournaments. She also

performed well at regional track and field tournaments. However,

she could not to secure a scholarship for a foreign school. It

seemed that a big athletic talent was doomed to oblivion. But then

came Quinn Fung A Wing. This born and bred Surinamer left for

the US as a teenager in 1992 to study and pursue a track and field

career. After his study, Quinn continued to represent Suriname at

international track and field tournaments, despite the fact that he

lived in Florida.

‘In 2007 my mother was on a holiday in Florida. She told me about

the promising new talent Kirsten. She did not want this talent to go

to waste, so we discussed a few options. In December 2007 I came

to Suriname. I saw Kirsten perform, have been to her training ses-

sions and saw her talent. I discussed the matter with the Track and

Field Board and together we set out to find means to make it pos-

sible for Kirsten to go study and train in the United States. We’ve

talked to several people, institutions and organizations, including

Ik wilde direct terug. Ik kon maar moeilijk wennen.” Ook sportief liep het niet zo lekker, omdat Kirsten door een blessure enkele maanden was uitgeschakeld. Gaandeweg begon zij haar draai te vinden, ook omdat zij weer kon trainen en meedoen aan wedstrijden. Op school werd zij steeds meer geaccepteerd, vooral dankzij haar prestaties op de trainingsbaan. Ook thuis moest ze wennen, aan haar “gastouders”: Quinn en zijn vrouw Marsha. “We kenden elkaar nauwelijks”, vertelt Quinn. “Kirsten moest zich aanpassen aan het leven in de VS en wij moesten haar leren kennen.” Nu hebben zij een goede band met elkaar. “In de atletiek is er echt competitie”, zegt Kirsten. “Er is zoveel talent, dus je moet echt je best doen om er boven uit te steken.” Dat lukte al gauw. Als enige buitenlander op de St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida viel Kirsten snel op, ook omdat ze uitblonk tijdens de atletiektrainingen. Nadat ze haar draai had gevonden, bleef ze de ene wedstrijd na de andere winnen. “Het niveau daar is hoger. Ook de manier van trainen is anders. Daar heb je vlak naast de renbaan een gym met allerlei appara-tuur om je verder te ontwikkelen. Ook is er een 400-meterbaan. Ik wil me nu ook gaan richten op de 400 meter.”

SnellerKirsten heeft haar persoonlijke tijden weten te verbeteren. Zo zit ze nu op de 100 meter ruim onder de 12 seconden die ze in Suriname klokte. Op de 60 meter staat Kirsten in haar leeftijdsklasse in de Top 6 van de VS. Een blik op haar prestaties dit jaar leert dat er vooruitgang in zit. Met 11.60 seconden op de 100 meter verbeterde ze in maart 2010 haar persoonlijk record, tijdens de Miramar Classic in Florida. Bij districtswed-strijden in april vestigde zij op de 200 meter een persoonlijk record van 23.86 seconden. Ook op de 60 meter sprint, de 400 en 5000 meter klokte Kirsten goede tijden. In juli 2010 vertegenwoordigt Kirsten Suriname op de WK atletiek junioren in Canada. “Als ik haar een cijfer moet geven dan is het een 9. Kirsten kan beter, sneller lopen. Ze moet nog groeien, technisch, tactisch en mentaal. Maar ze zit heel dicht bij haar volle potentie”, vertelt Quinn.

ToekomstInmiddels heeft Kirsten een beurs gekregen van Pennsyl-vania State University (Penn State), een echte “atletenuniver-siteit”. Ze gaat op de campus wonen en meer tijd doorbren-gen op de atletiekbaan. Haar familie in Suriname en haar gastouders zijn trots op Kirsten. “Nu zij naar de universiteit gaat, lijkt het alsof er een gewicht van onze schouders is gevallen”, zegt Quinn. “De ver-wachtingen waren hoog, vooral van het Staatsolie Sportfonds. Met Penn State heeft Kirsten de beste keuze gemaakt. Die universiteit heeft een uitstekende reputatie op atletiekgebied. Kirsten is daar in goede handen.” Kirsten beseft dat ze nu een andere fase van haar leven ingaat, waarin ze zelfstandig haar beslissingen zal moeten nemen. In Quinn en Marsha heeft zij goede vrienden op wie zij altijd kan terugvallen. Kirsten gaat voor een carrière als professioneel atleet. Haar ultieme droom is om Suri-name succesvol te vertegenwoordigen op de Olympische Spelen 2012 in Londen. “Ik ben mijn sponsors Staatsolie, Sportzaken, Fernandes en SLM dankbaar, want zonder hen zou ik echt niet zijn waar ik nu ben.”

Homesick

Reflecting upon those early days Kirsten says ‘the beginning was awful. I

was homesick, lacked a fluency in English and therefore dared not to talk

to people. I wanted to come home right away because I couldn’t get used

to my new environment.’ But after a few months, she was beginning to get

settled. Her performance on the track made it easy for people at school to

accept her. At ‘home’ she had to get used to her ‘temp’ parents: Quinn and

his wife Marsha. ‘We barely knew each other’, says Quinn. Kirsten had to

adapt to life in the USA and we had to get to know her. Now we have an

excellent relationship.’ ‘Track and Field is very competitive’, says Kirsten.

‘There is so much talent, so you have to excel if you want to be noticed.’

She succeeded to do that. Being the only foreigner at the St. Thomas

Aquinas High School in Florida, it was hard not noticing Kirsten because

she was at the top at track and field training. After she had settled, she

won one tournament after the other. ‘They have a much higher level in the

States and their way of training is different. There is a gym with a lot of

equipment right next to the track to help develop your body. There is also

a 400 meters track. I want to do the 400 meters now.’

Faster

Kirsten managed to improve her personal best. She runs the 100 meters

well under 12 seconds, her Surinamese best. On the 60 meters Kirsten

belongs to the US top 6 in her age group and her performances for

this year clearly indicate that she is moving on. In March this year she

improved her personal best on the 100 meters with a time of 11.60 sec-

onds at the Miramar Classic in Florida. At county tournaments in April

she did the 200 meters in 23.86, her personal best. She also had excel-

lent performances on the 60 meters sprint, as well as the 400 and 5,000

2010 Kirsten will represent Suriname at the World

Championship Track and Field for minors in Canada.

‘If I had to grade her performance I’d give her a 9.

But Kirsten can do better. She still has to grow tech-

nically, tactically and mentally. However, she’s not far

off her max performance’, says Quinn.

Future

Kirsten has received a scholarship from the

Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), a

genuine ‘athletes university’. She will be living on

the campus and be spending more time on the

track. Her family in Suriname and her American

temps are very proud. ‘Now that she’ll be going to

the university, it seems like a weight has been lifted

off our shoulders’, says Quinn. ‘Expectations were

high, especially with the Staatsolie Sports Fund. But

Kirsten made a good choice picking Penn State. The

university has a very good name when it comes to

track and field. Kirsten is in good hands.’

Kirsten understands that she is now entering another phase in her life,

one where she will have to make decisions on her own. Quinn and

Marsha will be best friends she can always count on. Kirsten wants to

pursue a professional athletic career. Her biggest wish is to go to the

2012 Olympics in London. ‘I’m grateful to my sponsors Staatsolie, the

Governmental Department of Sports, Fernandes Company and Surinam

Airways for I wouldn’t be here right now if it weren’t for them.’

Everybody Deserves Legal Rights

Robby Amain (49) started as a Field

Engineer with the Maintenance Department

at Saramacca in 1995. Recently he became

Maintenance Engineer at the new Reliability

& Maintenance Engineering department. Ten

years ago he decided to ‘add some other work’

to his schedule. ‘I wanted to help the less fortu-

nate, mainly the Marroons from the interior.

Robby hosts the weekly television program

‘Luku Dosu’ (TV in the Aucaans). ‘‘Luku Dosu’

is to help people’, says Amain. ‘In each broad-

cast we focus on a number of social issues.

The hosts mainly speak Marroon dialect and

Sranantongo (Surinamese lingua franca) and

we reach the average man in every ethnic

group. At first we focused on the Marroon

community, but we have shifted the focus to

a broader group. This pleases me very much

because we live in a multi-cultural society.

The beginning

Robby successfully completed Lower

Vocational Education (with a technical disci-

pline) in Moengo. When he asked the couple

that was taking care of him what he could do

for them they said: nothing. We’ve helped you

to help your people. I’ve never forgotten that

and that’s how it began for me’, says Robby.

Robby Amain (49) begon in 1995 bij Staatsolie als field Engineer op de afdeling Maintenance te

Saramacca. Sinds kort werkt hij als Maintenance Engineer op de nieuwe afdeling Reliability & Main-tenance Engineering. tien jaar geleden besloot hij om ook “ander werk” te gaan doen. “Ik wilde me

inzetten voor de minderbedeelden, in het bijzonder voor de marrons.”

Robert Dadoe Amain rondde in Moengo de LBGO af. In de stad schreef hij zich in voor de avondcursussen opzichter en onderopzichter Werktuigbouwkunde. Daarna bezocht hij de HTO-opleiding Werktuigbouwkunde. Vervolgens ging hij als praktijkmachinist aan de slag bij de EBS waar hij 13 jaar bleef werken. HetbeginRobby doorliep succesvol de LBGO-school te Moengo (technische richting). Toen hij zijn diploma in handen had, vroeg hij het echtpaar dat voor hem zorgde, wat hij voor hen kon doen. “Het antwoord was: ‘Niets. We hebben je geholpen om jouw mensen te helpen.’ “Die uitspraak is me altijd bijgebleven en dat is waar het allemaal voor mij mee begon”, vertelt Robby. Marronjongeren vormden in zijn ogen een kwetsbare groep, omdat ze voortdurend negatief in het nieuws kwamen. Hij besloot zich in eerste instantie op deze groep te rich-ten. “Ik begon via de radio voorlichting te geven, vier jaar later kwam tv erbij.” De uit-zendingen bleken aan te slaan bij jongeren én ander publiek.

HulpRobby besteedt zijn vrije tijd vooral aan soci-aal-maatschappelijk werk. “Ik denk vaak: terwijl ik hier lekker rust, schreeuwt er ergens iemand om hulp.” Via zijn tv-programma heeft hij veel zaken ten goede kunnen keren. Zo besteedde hij een keer aandacht aan de schoolbus van Peto-ondro (een dorp nabij Moengo) die van ellende bijna uit elkaar viel. De buseigenaar bood hierna twee betere bussen aan. Leerlingen van de Prinses Beatrixschool te Stoelmanseiland waren maanden van onderwijs verstoken door een langdurige reparatie aan het schoolgebouw. “Nadat Luku Dosu dit probleem belichtte, werd het onderwijs binnen een week hervat”, zegt Robby. Hij vertelt ook over de problemen van jongeren in Moengo: geweld, tienerzwanger-schappen en vele drop-outs.Volgens Robby is er behoefte aan een voorbeeldfiguur. “Om deze jongeren te motiveren vroeg ik Eddie Jharap, oud-directeur van Staatsolie, om voor hen een lezing te houden. Het werd een groot succes. De leerlingen, zo’n 400, brengen later dit jaar een tegenbezoek aan de stad.”

OndersteuningGeld verdient Robby niet aan al zijn inspan-ningen. “Vaak moet ik in mijn eigen zak gaan, maar dat vind ik helemaal niet erg. Mijn groot-ste ondersteuning is de kracht van God en niet te vergeten mijn vrouw en kinderen. Zonder hen zou ik dit nooit kunnen klaarspelen.” Hij wil nog veel verzetten en betekenen voor men-sen die in nood zijn. Daarom is hij in 2003 begonnen met de rechtenstudie op de Anton de Kom Universiteit. Robby hoopt binnenkort af te studeren en een advocatenkantoor te beginnen. Hij wil zijn kennis inzetten voor zijn medemens die het niet zo breed heeft: “Een ieder heeft recht op recht”.

Help

Robby invests much time in his social

work. ‘I often feel as if somebody is in

need of help while I’m just relaxing.’ His

TV program has helped to right a lot

of wrongs. He had a news item once

about the ramshackle school bus at

Peto-ondro (a village near Moengo). The

bus owner, after seeing the program,

had two better buses available. The

students of the ‘Princes Beatrix School’

at Stoelmanseiland were deprived of

education due to prolonged repairs to

the school building. ‘After ‘Luku Dosu’

focused on the issue, education was

resumed within a week,’ says Robby.

He elaborates on the problems among

the Moengo youth including violence,

teen pregnancies and the many school

drop-outs. ‘These children need a role

model’, says Robby. To motivate these

young people I once asked the former

Staatsolie Managing Director, Eddie

Jharap, to hold a lecture for them. It

was a great success. The approximately

400 students will visit Paramaribo later

this year.’

Support

Robby does not earn money with his

efforts. ‘I even have to chip in once in

a while, but I don’t really mind. My

biggest support comes from God and

also my wife and kids. Without them I

would never be able to do the things I

do.’ Robby would like to do much more

for those who need a helping hand. He

started studying Law in 2003 at the

Anton de Kom University. After gradua-

tion he wants to start a lawyer practice.

He will then make his knowledge avail-

able to the less fortunate. ‘Everybody

deserves legal rights.’


Tullow Oil to Operate in Offshore Suriname

The British-Irish oil company Tullow Oil will be

exploring block 47 offshore Suriname. A Heads of

Agreement was signed with Staatsolie on 13 May.

Tullow has been operating in the Uitkijk and Coronie

onshore blocks since 2007.

Staatsolie and Tullow Oil will soon be signing a pro-

duction sharing contract outlining the details for the

cooperation. Block 47 is situated at 260 kilometers

(140 n-miles) off the coast, stretching out 2,369 km2

with depths ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters.

Exploration will start in 2011 with 3D seismic sur-

veys to determine the potential of the block. In the

medium term Tullow Oil will drill exploration wells. The

British-Irish company will bear all exploration cost and

Staatsolie only becomes committed to paying back

should production operation start after a commercially

profitable find. Staatsolie will be able to get a 20 per-

cent stake in the development and production phase.

Tullow Oil is no stranger to Suriname due to its coop-

eration with Paradise Oil (POC), a Staatsolie subsid-

iary. POC has been operating on behalf of Tullow Oil

in the Uitkijk Block since 2007. Exploration drilling for

the Coronie Block will start soon.

Tullow Oil is one of Europe’s largest independent oil

companies with operations in Africa, Europe, South

Asia and South America. Its South America operations

extend to Suriname, Guyana and French Guyana.

Staatsolie en Tullow Oil willen op korte termijn een productiedelings-

overeenkomst ondertekenen waarin de details van de samenwerking zijn uit-gewerkt. Tullow Oil is reeds bekend in Suri-name vanwege haar samenwerking met Staatsolies dochtermaatschappij Paradi-se Oil Company (POC). Mede namens Tullow Oil verricht POC vanaf 2007 exploratieactiviteiten in het Uitkijkblok, terwijl de exploratieboringen in Coronie in de startblokken staan. Tullow Oil is een van de grootste onaf-hankelijke oliemaatschappijen van Europa met activiteiten in Afrika, Europa, Zuid-Azië en Zuid-Amerika. In Zuid-Amerika heeft Tullow Oil belangen in Suriname, Guyana en Frans-Guyana.

Het Brits-Ierse tullow Oil zal in blok 47 in het Surinaamse

zeeareaal exploratieactiviteiten uitvoeren. Op 13 mei is hiertoe een overeenkomst op hoofd-lijnen gesloten met Staatsolie. tullow Oil is sinds 2007 actief in de onshore-blokken Uitkijk

en Coronie.

Americas Petrogas verwacht naast waardevolle informatie over de gebieden ook productieverhoging en uitbreiding van de olie- en gasreserves. IraktreftextraveiligheidsmaatregelenomolieveldentebeschermenIrak is begonnen met extra veiligheidsmaatregelen ter bescherming van de olie-velden in en rond Basra, een stad in het zuidoosten. In het verleden vormden Iraakse oliepijpleidingen vaak het doelwit van aanslagen. In april verwoestte een bom een deel van de pijplijn die noord-Irakese olievelden verbindt met de Turkse haven Ceyhan. Duizenden achtergelaten mijnen en clusterbommen moesten van de olievelden verwijderd worden. Hierna kon er gegraven worden om de putten te herstellen en het netwerk van oliepijpleidingen te kunnen uitbreiden. Veiligheids-troepen werken samen met oliemaatschappijen die zijn verbonden aan het Minis-terie van Oliezaken. Deze troepen hebben contracten getekend met buitenlandse maatschappijen die toestemming hebben om een aantal olievelden in het gebied tot ontwikkeling te brengen. Het doel is om maatregelen te treffen die voldoen aan de eisen van de maatschappijen die in het gebied opereren. De overeenkomsten verzekeren de veiligheid van de maatschappijen. SaipemkrijgtcontracteninKoeweitenAngolaSaipem heeft twee contracten voor nieuwe onshoreprojecten in Koeweit en Angola verkregen, met een waarde van ca. 580 miljoen euro. De Kuwait Oil Company heeft het Turnkey EC contract voor de bouw van een gasboosterstation in het zuidoosten van Koeweit toegekend aan Saipem. De opdracht behelst de technische fase, de aankoop van materiaal, bouw en ingebruikname van een nieuw gas booster station dat 250 miljoen kubieke voet gas per dag moet leveren. Het gas zal dan verder vervoerd worden naar de bestaande Mina Al Ahmadi-raffinaderij. De oplevering van het project is gepland voor midden 2011.Het tweede contract is door Bechtel Overseas Corporation toegekend aan het PLNG-consortium dat geleid wordt door Petromar. Het behelst de bouw van een beheerssysteem als onderdeel van een groter project voor de bouw van een installatie voor de productie, opslag en verscheping van vloeibaar aardgas (LNG), nabij de stad Soyo in de Republiek Angola. Americas Petrogas Commences 2010 Drilling Plans for Argentina

Americas Petrogas announced the commencement of its 2010

Argentinian exploration and development program. It will include drilling

a minimum of 15 wells and completing a minimum of 2 seismic pro-

grams in 7 areas in Argentina’s Neuquen Basin.

Americas Petrogas expects to gain valuable information about the

areas, increase production and expand reserves of both oil and gas.

With this exploration and development program, the company hopes to

Iraq Takes Extra Security Measures to Protect Oil Fields

Iraq has begun implementing extra security measures to protect oil

fields in and around the southeastern city of Basra. Iraq’s oil pipelines

have frequently been attacked in the past. In April, a bomb destroyed

a section of pipeline linking northern Iraqi oil fields to the Turkish port

of Ceyhan. Thousands of mines and cluster bombs that were left in

the oil fields have been removed in order to be able to dig and repair

the wells and extend the network of oil pipelines. Security forces are

cooperating with oil companies connected to the oil ministry, and

have signed security agreements with foreign companies licensed to

develop a number of oil fields in the area. The aim is to take appropri-

ate security measures that adapt to the demands of the companies

operating in the area and ensures their safety. Iraq relies on its current

2.5 million barrels per day production for more than 90 percent of its

government revenue and about 60 percent of its gross national prod-

Murphy Makes Discovery in Gulf of Mexico

Murphy Oil Corporation has made a discovery at its Dalmatian North pros-

pect in the Gulf of Mexico. The well was drilled to a total depth of 13,195

feet. The well was drilled in approximately 5,820 feet of water. Murphy Oil

is the operator of the block, with a 64.2% working interest. Other partners

include Newfield (23.3%) and Mariner Energy (12.5%). (rigzone.com)

Saipem snags contracts in Kuwait and Angola

Saipem has been awarded two new onshore lump-sum contracts in

Kuwait and Angola for a total value of about 580 million euro. Saipem

has been awarded by Kuwait Oil Company the Lump Sum Turnkey

EPC contract to build a gas booster station in Southeast Kuwait. The

work covers the engineering, procurement, construction and commis-

sioning of a new gas booster station delivering 250 million cubic feet of

gas per day. The gas will be subsequently conveyed to the existing Mina

Al Ahmadi refinery. The project is due to be completed in mid 2011.

The second contract has been awarded by Bechtel Overseas

Corporation to the PLNG consortium led by Petromar for the con-

struction of the containment systems as part of the overall project

for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, along

with storage and marine loading facilities, close to the town of Soyo,

Republic of Angola. The scope of work comprises the construction

of 5 tanks. Petromar will be in charge of the erection of the external

components of the LNG, propane, butane and condensate tanks.

The overall construction works will be completed within 47 months.

JennyVerwey-Kartopawiro weet nog goed hoe moeilijk het was om als kers-verse schoolverlater aan werk te komen. “Bij elk sollicitatiegesprek werd gevraagd naar ervaring, maar die had ik niet. “Ik

raakte gedemotiveerd”. In april 1985 keerde het tij: Jenny werd opgeroepen voor een sollicitatiegesprek bij Staatsolie. Tot haar verbazing mocht ze een week later, op 17 april, beginnen. Jenny werkte de afgelopen 25 jaar onder leiding van diverse directieleden. Ze werd regelmatig belast met grote projecten. Zo heeft zij op de Sarah Maria-plant het centraal secretariaat opgezet en geleid. Op verzoek van toen-malig Technisch Directeur Marc Waaldijk gaf Jenny administratieve ondersteuning

‘My Work Keeps Me Young!’

Jenny Verwey-Kartopawiro still remembers how

hard it was to find a job freshly out of school. ‘At

every interview they inquired after my experience,

but I lacked that. It choked my enthusiasm.’ In April

1985 the tide turned: Jenny was invited for an inter-

view at Staatsolie. Much to her surprise she could

start a week later on 17 April.

In the past 25 years Jenny has worked for several

Staatsolie executives, and more than once was she

in charge of big projects. She has put up and led the

central secretariat at the Sarah Mariah plant. At Marc

Christophuros‘Chris’Watamaleo trad 25 jaar geleden in dienst als koerier. Die functie bekleedt hij nog altijd met veel plezier. “Het werk is interessant. Je komt op plaatsen waar je normaliter niet zou komen. Op kantoren van ministers bijvoorbeeld.” Het werk van een koerier is veelzijdig. Chris levert niet alleen brie-ven af, maar doet allerlei andere klussen. Zo regelt hij verzekeringen, verblijfs- en werkvergunningen voor buitenlandse medewerkers van Staatsolie. Met trots zegt Chris dat hij altijd op tijd is en zijn werk serieus neemt.

Het bezoek van de Guyanese oud-presi-dent Cheddi Jagan aan Staatsolie vormde voor Chris een hoogtepunt in zijn car-rière. Samen met president Ronald Venetiaan en directieleden van Staatsolie zou het Guyanese staatshoofd een kijkje nemen bij de raffinaderij en bij de plant op Saramacca. Vlak voordat het gezel-schap op Saramacca zou arriveren, bleek er iets mis te zijn met de vlag. Chris en anderen werden ingeschakeld; zij moes-ten met spoed vanuit het hoofdkantoor naar Saramacca gaan om de kwestie op te lossen. Chris slaagde erin om de twee vlaggen op tijd te laten wapperen. “De toekomst van Staatsolie ziet er roos-kleurig uit”, vindt Chris. Toch is hij niet van plan om er tot zijn pensioen te blij-ven werken. Hij heeft namelijk plannen voor een eigen boerderij. In zijn vrije tijd verzorgt Chris met veel toewijding zijn koeien. Ook traint hij de spelers van voetbalvereniging Reeberg United in Lelydorp. Blijft daarna nog vrije tijd over, dan gaat Chris graag jagen.

‘Bright Future Ahead for Staatsolie’

It was 25 years ago when Christophuros ‘Chris’

Watamaleo started working for Staatsolie as a dis-

patch rider. Chris still enjoys doing that job. ‘It’s inte-

resting work. You go to places you normally wouldn’t.

Take for instance a Minister’s office.’ Dispatch riders

have a versatile job: Chris not only delivers the mail,

but he takes care of a number of odd jobs. He sees

to insurance, residence and work permits for foreign

Staatsolie employees.

Chris proudly states that he is always on time and

that he takes his job seriously. He considers the

visit to Staatsolie by the former Guyanese president

Cheddi Jagan a highlight in his career. Accompanied

by President Ronald Venetiaan and the Staatsolie

management the Guyanese Head of State would tour

the refinery and the plant in Saramacca. Just before

the delegation arrived at Saramacca there seemed

to be something wrong with the flag. Chris and some

others were contacted and they had to speed from the

Staatsolie head office to Saramacca. He managed to

fly both flags in time.

‘Staatsolie has a bright future ahead’, says Chris.

Yet he does not want to stay on until his retirement.

Chris has plans to start his own farm. He devotes his

spare time taking care of his cows. He is also a soccer

trainer for the FC Reeberg United from Lelydorp. He

also likes hunting.

UrmilaAliradja-Amanh begon in 1997 als vakantiejobber bij Staatsolie. Ze zette zich enthousiast in en werd in dienst genomen. Urmila werkte eerst twee jaren op HRM. Daarna was zij tot 2008 actief bij de receptie. Inmiddels is zij opgeklommen tot Administrative Assistant III op het secretariaat van de Algemeen Directeur.

Urmila vindt het prettig om op die afde-ling te werken. Ze voelt zich helemaal thuis tussen de documenten en bestan-den en draagt bij aan de overzichtelijk-heid van het archief. Haar dagelijks werk bestaat uit het opleggen en archiveren van documenten, het opzoeken van stukken en het assisteren van collega’s. De sfeer bevalt Urmila uitstekend. “Iedereen hier is net één familie”. En dat kan zij heel goed weten, want Urmila is een echte familievrouw: zij brengt graag tijd door met haar moeder, zus en twee kinderen. Urmila heeft een posi-tieve instelling: zij klaagt niet en is altijd tevreden met wat zij heeft.

‘It’s Like One Big Family’

Urmila Aliradja-Amanh took a summer job at

Staatsolie in 1997. She gave her best and was offered

a job. She had two years at the HRM department.

Then she moved to the front desk where she worked

till 2008. Now, she holds the position of Administrative

Assistant III at the Managing Director’s Secretariat.

It feels good to work at that department. Urmila is at

home among the documents and files and she has a

share in keeping the office pretty organized. Her daily

duties are storing and filing away documents, looking

up documents and assisting her colleagues.

Urmila likes the environment. ‘It’s like one big family.’

And she ought to know, for Urmila is a genuine family

person: she spends much time with her mother, sister

and two children. Urmila has a positive look on things:

she never complains and is always content with what

she has.

Tijdens de bouw is Jenny zelfs uit-geleend aan de constructiemaatschappij ABB Lummus Global. Bij Staatsolie heeft de schoolverlater van weleer zich in de loop der jaren volledig kunnen ontplooien. Haar kennis, inzet en ontwikkeling leidden tot diverse promo-

ties. Momenteel is Jenny betrokken bij, zoals ze het zelf noemt, “een mooi pro-ject”: de uitbreiding van de raffinaderij. Deze loyale en flexibele medewerk-ster van Staatsolie zorgt voor een goede balans tussen werk en gezin. Zij is getrouwd en heeft een dochter van 18. In haar vrije tijd is ze actief in de tuin. Ook zingen, dansen en squashen vindt ze leuk. “Mijn werk houdt me jong”, zegt ze.

Waaldijk’s request, then Technical Director, she assisted

the negotiating team dealing with ABB Lummus Global for

the construction of the existing refinery. She pioneered at

the refinery, starting from scratch. During the construction

Jenny was even loaned to ABB Lummus Global.

At Staatsolie Jenny has managed to build up a career

through the years. Her knowledge, efforts and skills

have presented opportunities for several promotions.

Jenny is currently involved in what she calls ‘a beauti-

ful project’, the Refinery Expansion Project.

This loyal and flexible Staatsolie employee strikes

a good balance between work and family. She is

married, has a daugther of 18 and she likes garde-

ning. Singing, dancing and playing squash are also

among her favorite pastimes. ‘My work keeps me

young’, she says.

Our esteemed colleague Clifton Hugo Peroti left us on 19 June

2010. He started as Board Operator at Refining Operations at

Tout Lui Faut in 1997 and soon made Lead Operator. The last

position he held was that of Shift Supervisor.

Peroti, a dad of four, was 45 years old. At work he was nick-

named Pero. ‘He was a meek person’, say both his colleagues

and his supervisor. ‘He always tried to ease a message to others;

mostly beginning with the words let me say it this way.’

Peroti had a special tie with his 12-men crew. ‘He was a friend to

everyone, but he never slipped up. Even when we were on a day

trip he always kept a sharp look out: too much drinking and also

swimming off too far were prohibited.’

He liked telling jokes, but his true passion was fishing. ‘Once he

treated everyone in the crew to baked fish.’ It is obvious that his

colleagues will miss him. ‘We’ll always remember the precious

moments together and the good advice he used to give us.’

In Memoriam

Onze gewaardeerde medewerker en collega CliftonHugoPeroti overleed op 19 juni 2010. Peroti kwam

in 1997 in dienst als Boardoperator bij Refining Ope-rations te Tout Lui Faut en maakte later promotie tot Lead Operator. Hij heeft tot laatst op deze afdeling gewerkt als Shift Supervisor. Peroti was vader van vier

kinderen en werd 45 jaar.Aan het werk was Peroti bekend als Pero. “Hij was een

zachtmoedig mens”, vinden zowel zijn collega’s als lei-dinggevende. Hij probeerde zaken altijd voorzichtig te formuleren en begon dan vaak met: “laat me het anders zeggen”.Peroti heeft met zijn medewerkers, zo’n twaalf man, een speciale band weten op te bouwen. “Hij was vrienden met een ieder, maar ook 1x24 uur onze Supervisor. Als we voor een trip buiten de stad waren, lette hij nog altijd scherp op. We mochten niet te diep in het glaasje kijken of te ver in het water gaan”, vertellen zij. Hij hield van grappen maken, maar had vooral een voorliefde voor henge-len. “Eens nam hij voor iedereen gebakken vis mee naar het werk.” Zijn col-lega’s zullen hem missen, dat staat vast. “De leuke momenten samen en zijn goede adviezen zullen wij ons altijd herinneren.”
