President’s Report - NSWChris Chapman

The start to spring has been another challenging one. It started with a sudden burst of warm weather and sunshine to give us hope only for that to be replaced by grey skies, a drop in temps and enough rain to once again cause Warragamba to spill over. Then the grey clouds disappear and we get hit with temps in the high 30‛s and in some places into the 40‛s. Who would be a Turf Manager? Lucky we love it.

It was great to see so many sports field delegates at the recent AGCSA Conference held at the Hunter Valley. The

Sports field streams were brilliantly supported and the content of the talks was the best I have encountered since the sports field stream was introduced, a credit to all involved.

Congratulations and commiserations must go to our NSW STA Sports Graduate of the Year Matthew Clark. Matthew went head to head with four other nominees for the title of Toro Australian Sports Turf Graduate of the Year.

In what was the closest judging in years Matthew

just missed out to the eventual winner Grant Woolley from Tasmania. From all reports a great time was had by all the graduates with TORO making sure they were involved with all aspects of the conference.

At our last seminar in Wollongong, STA NSW was pleased to launch the introduction of our new Turf assessment service. STA Turf Assessment – this service is being offered to all turf managers as a totally independent and affordable option as we believe that there is a need for this service within our industry. It is our hope to work with the turf manager to help them produce the best surface possible.

Our final event of the year was our annual golf day, this year it was held at the beautiful Bayview Golf Club, Mona Vale. This is always one of our most enjoyable events, and we had a fantastic day. The course was sensational and I would like to thank Dave Stone for all the assistance he us, gave not only on the day but also in the lead up to it, nothing was a problem and the day went off without a hitch thanks to Dave and his staff. Once again we had the $10 000.00 hole in one up for grabs, but alas it was very safe as a matter of fact only 4 golfers landed on the green of the par 3. A little practice maybe required for next year Gentleman so put your escape suits on and head to the driving range.Chappo.

President’s Report - TasmaniaChris Hay

What a start to spring, high winds and temperatures and no rain to speak of, it sure is going to be a long summer.

Our recent field day held at Barnbougle was a great success as two sporting associations came together and I speak of the STA and the TGCSA. A big thanks to Mark Johnson and his committee for all their hard work getting this event together and a big thanks to my committee as well. To Neville from Pellows Saws and mowers thanks for your ongoing support of the turf industry in Tasmania and can you pass on a big thanks to Toro for being the major sponsor. To all the other sponsors big thanks from both associations we really value your support.

The 2 day seminar kicked off with the Bactivate golf tournament and everyone who played was very impressed with this magnificent golf course. The quality of speakers was first class and I won‛t mention them because I will miss someone and I will be in trouble again. Bruce from Roberts one of the STA gold sponsors‛ shouted after dinner drinks and this was enjoyed by all.

Our upcoming field day on the 22nd December is going to be a fantastic day kicking off at the great man‛s ranch Nic Hanson‛s and then heading to StrathAyr one of our new sponsors and then concluding at the big bash cricket what a night this promises to be. To all you turf guys get along and support this field day and join as members.

drumMUSTER is proud to announce a new service for chemical users being offered by JK Plastics that has made recycling even easier.

JK Plastics was established in Sydney in 2011 and has been working with drumMUSTER since August 2014. “Our strong commitment and dedication to responsible plastic recycling practices is paramount,” said Belinda La Faber, Business Development Manager at JK Plastics. “This is particularly demonstrated through our work with the drumMUSTER program.”

The new ‘Lift and Load’ service offered by the company will provide the turf and horticultural industries in the Sydney Basin, including golf courses, sportsgrounds, council parks and gardens, with an even easier way to dispose of their empty agvet containers.

Ms La Faber said, “As a drumMUSTER approved processor and collection agency, we are always developing new ways to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the collection of clean chemical drums.”

To participate in the service, chemical users must have at least two open top intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) – one for 20 litre containers and a second for smaller containers. Each IBC should contain 35–80 drums respectively. If you do not own any IBCs, please contact drumMUSTER Regional Consultant Vernon Keighley to find out how you can get them.

When IBCs are full, users should contact JK Plastics by calling 0416 146 675 or emailing [email protected] to register a pick-up. The IBCs are then lifted onto the back of a flatbed truck and replaced with two empty IBCs.

drumMUSTER Regional Consultant Vernon Keighley has nothing but praise for the new service.

“Belinda found drumMUSTER online and contacted me as she liked the concept of container recycling and was looking for a program

with cleanliness credentials. I had a good feeling from our first meeting – I was impressed with a young brother and sister making a real go of it with a small family enterprise. Since then, their business has grown. Not surprising, given their hard work, enthusiasm and innovation.”

Stuart Martin, Golf Course Superintendent at the North Turramarra Golf Club, has been participating in drumMUSTER for two years and has noticed a steady increase in the amount of drums being returned in his area. He now employs the ‘Lift and Load’ service on a regular basis.

“We started with two IBCs and are currently up to six. We are a major collection point in the North Shore, with three other golf clubs and various chemical users bringing their drums to us for collection by JK Plastics. I’ve always found Belinda to be extremely helpful and professional and I encourage others in the Sydney region to take advantage of this wonderful service.”

All agvet containers presented to JK Plastics must have their lids off and be triple rinsed so as to be free of any chemical residue.

To learn more about the drumMUSTER program and ‘Lift and Load’ visit www.drummuster.com.au or call Mr Keighley on 0406 745 030.

Message from STA Australia, PresidentThis last quarter of the year can mean many different things to most of us in the turf industry. For the majority of us it heralds the all too quickening end of yet another busy year, but for a small section of our turf community it also marks a milestone in their chosen career. Very soon those who have studied hard and hopefully completed all their exams, course assignments and competencies will be rewarded with their well-deserved accreditation.

Amongst these will be the graduating 3rd year turf apprentices from TAFE Colleges and Institutes throughout Australia. It’s that time of the year when across the country the turf industry will come together to celebrate the graduating class of 2015 as they receive their completion certificates and for those select few an honoured award or recognised achievement.

An absolute core element of the Sports Turf Association has been the promotion of quality educational resources and new technologies complimented by the provision of effective information/training events. The STAA proudly encourages the rights and intentions of all members to continue to take every available opportunity and make the very most of their learning potential and career development.

This could not have been possible if not for the continued support by the many companies linked with each state’s Sports Turf Association. They have shared this vision with the appreciation of how very proactive the Australian Turf Industry is with generational skills training and development.

Since 2010, TORO Australia has undertaken the very serious commitment to be involved in the education and training of the sports turf industry by sponsoring the National Sports Turf Graduate Award. Through TORO’s generous involvement the winner is afforded the very privileged opportunity in sponsored travel and accommodation to the USA Sports Fields and Grounds Forum as well as exclusive access to the TORO headquarters and R&D division.

It goes without saying that the achievement of awards such as this is a career defining moment and one that all turf study graduates should aspire to.

So on behalf of all the Sports Turf Association Australia community, I would like to express all encouragement and best wishes to our turf apprentices and students as they step forward on a brilliant career within this fantastic industry.

Do use Sand – Don’t use Gravel

The first installations used gravel & sand backfill as done in the UK however it was found that even with the finest gravels and our variable profile conditions that both the gravel and pipe became silted over time. Continuing performance of Slit Drainage systems depends directly on continuing permeability of the backfill and pipe components everywhere in the system design – gravel fails in this regard and methodology was changed over 25 year ago.

Only select drainage sand is used not gravel: The narrow width of slits (75mm) and pipes used (50 – 65mm) means any gravel envelope is insignificant. The large pore spaces of gravel allow particles to be washed into them or the pipe & permeability is soon reduced to zero. The smaller pore spaces of sand maintain the integrity of the slit wall and prevent slit movement.

RTA grade polyester sock is used on drainage pipes: The sock pore integrity allows water to pass but prevents sand entry and the sand prevents silt migration. No siltation of sock or pipe can be seen even after 20 years in the ground

What are the sources of these contaminants?

Slit excavation leaves a fine film of spoil on the slit walls. For the gravel section of any slit backfill this is washed into the pipe with the first drainage flush.

Fretting of some components of slit walls due to wet & dry cycles release more contaminants where any gravel backfill is used.

Slits for these drainage systems will be cut through a range of materials (silt, sand, clay, variable fill and rock debris) with varying degrees of integrity. The finer grading of sand prevents migration of any contaminants from these - gravel fails in this regard.

Do install slits after turfing – Don’t install slits before turfing

Slit drainage systems modify the hydrology of the soil such that the majority of rainfall does not have to infiltrate the soil but moves across the surface to a more permeable structure (sand filled slit) then moves downward.

We fail to understand why some in our Industry accept installation of slits before turfing where the slits will be capped by silt on the turf? Then they accept the premise that non-piped slits (so called ‘collectors’) with limited drainage capacity in the first instance (0.08 litres/min v 21 litres/min 50mm pipe) and which are likely to be silted in the longer term??

Do use smooth bore PVC for mains – Don’t use corrugated pipe

Smooth bore pipe has better capacity than corrugated pipe due to less friction loss. Based on manufacturer specifications 100mm PVC and 150mm polydrain at 1% grade have the same capacity of 10 litres/sec.

Use of smaller diameter pipe produces less spoil.

Wider trenches where drainage backfill is used results in dangerous surfaces. Aside from this it is extremely difficult to achieve and maintain turf cover due to the droughty nature of the backfill. Non-slotted pipe mains finished with soil backfill provide a much safer result to users and turf cover is easy to achieve and maintain.

We don’t expect everyone to use Turspec as their drainage Contractor – we do expect everyone to ensure that the system installed and methodology used will continue to perform.

NSW Turf GrowersThe Annual General Meeting of the Turf Growers Association, NSW Inc was held on Tuesday, 10th November at Pitt Town Sports Club.

There was a good representation of members on the evening and they were updated on the work undertaken during the year including funding programs, both with HIA and Local Land Services.

The members were advised that the LLS projects would continue into 2016 including Energy Efficiency and Turf Nutrition.

Richard Stephens from Turf Australia provided an update on the Turf conference held in August on the Sunshine Coast as well as a recent meeting he had attended discussing the current situation with Horticultural Innovation Australia (HIA) and its long term plans. More information on this will be provided in the coming weeks.

Dave Raison, Turf NSW Industry Development Officer, advised that as the HIA funding for the IDO position would come to an end in November and due to his other work commitments he had decided to step down from the position but he would continue to be involved with the committee and assist in seeing the remaining projects to completion.

The election of a Committee for 2015/16 was held and the following people will lead the association into the coming year.

President: Paul Saad, Southern Cross Turf

Vice President: Steve Vella, A View Turf

Treasurer: Anthony Muscat, Greener Lawn Supplies

General Committee: Joseph Muscat, Greener Lawn Supplies Troy Muscat, Active Turf Patrick Muscat, Green Life Turf Jonathon Mifsud, Rivers Edge Turf

Non Voting Committee: Matthew Plunkett, Greater Sydney Local Land Services David Raison, Turf Services P/L

Turf NSW will soon have a website for members to keep up to date with events, news and general information. It will also be a great site for industry and general public to assess when looking for turf growers.

A national program to fast-track chemical registration and permits for use could give turf growers a new range of much needed control options in production.

The ‘Improved access to Agvet chemicals for agricultural industries’ program is being undertaken by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) and aims to evaluate herbicides and pesticides across all agricultural industries to see if label registrations can be completed more efficiently.

It comes as the Federal Government reacts to concerns from agricultural industries that, while Australian industries use a lot of chemicals, the Australian market-place is considered small on a world-wide scale.

Currently, Australian growers are unable to use some chemicals which can be accessed by their international counterparts due to a lack of investment in the Australian registration process by global chemical companies.

The $8 million program aims to find out what chemicals industries need registered, and why, and if there is a correlation between industries for the uses, and how the process of registration for use in a number of industries can be completed.

The program can then have some chemicals fast-tracked to minor permit use status, and/or support registrants in undertaking the research needed for full label registration (for a number of industries at once) .

As part of the program, Turf Australia undertook a process of finding out which chemicals and pesticides the industry deemed the most important for use across the production and maintenance sectors.Compiling that information, Turf Australia recently attended a program workshop in Canberra armed with a list of priorities, and priority chemicals, for the Turf Industry.

“The priorities for our industry are around the control of wintergrass (poa annua), Parramatta Grass and seeded grasses (mainly

Congratulations to all those who supported the Turf Charity Race Day.

The event organisers Vivienne Leggett and Graeme Colless were very pleased to announce $100,079 was raised on the day.

$30,000 will be donated to The Coonamble Cancer Survival Trust to assist residents in the bush with transport and accommodation to have the opportunity to receive specialist treatments in Sydney.

The remainder being $66,589 (after a few expenses) will be donated to Hawkesbury Living Cancer Trust which is a TRUST assisting Chemotherapy services to be administered from Windsor Hospital.

So far the Trust has raised in excess of $1,600,000 million dollars and over $500,000 of this has been directly raised from the Turf Industry Charity Raceday at Hawkesbury Race Club.

This years event had a wealth of super stars as guest speakers; Ray Hadley, Nathan Hindmarsh, Brad Fittler and Richard Callander.

Turf Industry Charity Raceday a huge success

Kikuyu) in other warm season grasses,” Turf Australia- NSW Industry Development Officer, Dave Raison, said.

The final list of five priority chemicals to the industry, Dave said, had changed over the course of the last year.

He said: “It was a long process getting our top five together, and some chemicals which had been previously high on the list were removed as they had, fortunately, been given registration by the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicine Authority (APVMA) in that time.”

“In assembling our top five priority chemicals, we also included some older chemicals permitted for use in other industries – but not turf – as recent phytotoxicity trials had shown them to be effective weapon for the industry’s needs.”

The Canberra workshop brought together the RIRDC program team, APVMA, Horticultural Industries Australia (HIA), representatives from agricultural industries across Australia and chemical companies. Each of the industries put up five chemicals of priority, with over 700 listed at the conclusion of the day.

For the turf industry, the workshop had plenty of positive outcomes.

“Of the five priority chemicals the turf industry put up, three were put through to granting of ‘minor use permit’ stage, and two were accepted by registrants as chemicals they would invest in to move them to registered products for use in the turf industry,” Dave said.

He said HIA would now assist those registrants in advancing chemicals to the next stage.

“There has been a double benefit to turf by being part of this process – firstly through the advancement of chemicals for use in the industry, but secondly, through closer industry contact with chemical companies who now know the industry’s priorities and work with us to respond to our needs,” he said.

Dave said while the outcome had been positive for the industry, growers would need to wait until the minor use permits had actually been granted before they could use the chemicals. This is expected in coming months.

The 2014 recipient of the Sports Turf Association’s Turf Graduate of the Year award, Luke Cooney, has looked back on his past 12 months as a truly remarkable and unforgettable experience, having visited many of the hallowed sports grounds in the United States.

The Award, sponsored by Toro Australia, recognises outstanding graduates working within the turf industry and provides opportunities to enhance personal development, professionalism, career progression and heightened turf industry skills. As part of the award, Cooney attended the Toro Sports Fields & Grounds Forum in Australia and the U.S.

Having completed his apprenticeship at the University of Western Australia, Cooney started his career as a cricket curator at Perth’s oldest independent boy’s school, Hale School, before recently joining the Arena Management Team at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne as a Turf Tradesman.

“From that surprise early morning email when I was in Brazil at the FIFA World Cup to now, it has been an incredible 12 months as the 2014 Turf Graduate of the Year. The opportunities I have experienced have opened up so many doors and enabled me to meet the legends of the turf industry, those who curate the famous stadiums of Australia and the U.S.,” Cooney said.

“It has also solidified for me that I made the right career move in joining the turf industry.”

The U.S. trip included visits to some of the world’s most renowned sports fields including Petco Park, Qualcomm Stadium, U.S. Cellular Park, Soldier Field and Wrigley Field.

“I was fortunate enough to spend the day with a legend of the

U.S. turf industry, Steve Wightman, in San Diego. I then spent two weeks with Amy Fouty, the Sports Turf Manager at Michigan State University (MSU) and her Athletic Field Operations Crew. This was a fantastic experience. Michigan State University is home of the mighty Spartans, a powerhouse in college football and basketball, and they enjoy some of the most incredible athletic facilities.

“MSU has a fantastic working environment that fosters the values of teaching, learning, mentoring and professional development. What I will take away most from my time at MSU is the attention to detail and the pride the whole town has in the University and being a Spartan.

“While taking in the sights and sounds of one of America’s great cities, Chicago, we also spent a night with Roger “The Sodfather”

Bossard at U.S. Cellular Park (home of the Chicago White Sox) and watched the Sox and New York Yankees take to the field,” Cooney said.

The recipient of the Turf Graduate of the Year award is also given a mentor who assists in career development and advice on industry-related topics. As his mentor, Ballymore Stadium Ground Operations Manager, Scott Wallis, accompanied Luke on his trip to the United States - a trip he says has been the highlight of his 20 years in the turf industry.

“Travelling to America with Luke was not only a unique experience for him, but also an amazing career highlight for myself,” Wallis said.

“During our trip, we bounced ideas off each other and discussed technical turf issues among other things. Our professional relationship and friendship will continue in the years to come,” he said.

STA Turf Graduate of the Year program provides unique experience.

The pair attended the Sports Fields & Grounds Forum at The Toro Company’s headquarters in Bloomington, Minnesota. The forum is attended by representatives from universities, councils, municipalities, sports stadiums and colleges from around the U.S. The program included roundtable sessions, and product testing and demonstrations of Toro commercial equipment and irrigation products.

“I was not only amazed by the physical size of the Toro headquarters, but also by the inherent culture among its many and varied staff. The ability to look at and also drive prototype machinery and then provide feedback to the engineers who design the equipment was a unique experience that can’t be understated,” said Wallis.Luke adds that it was a true eye-opener to find out how much research, development, testing, detail, passion and pride goes into every machine that comes out of the company. Cooney’s advice to future graduates is to make the most of their studies and take every opportunity to make and keep in touch with as many contacts in the turf industry as they can.

“Look outside the box, there are some fantastic career opportunities around the country and around the world,” he said, “I feel so fortunate to have shared experiences and formed bonds with the 20 or so curators from around America and Canada.”

Cooney was nominated by the Sports Turf Association of Western Australia and his lecturers at Challenger Institute

of Technology. In 2013, he was awarded the C.H. Bailey Award for Sports Turf Apprentice (WA). He has now handed over the baton to 2015 STA Turf Graduate of the Year Grant Woolley. Both Cooney and Wallis would like to thank Toro Australia for the ongoing support of the Turf Graduate Program. “The investment that Toro puts back into the industry is outstanding and is a testament to their belief of building strong, long term relationships with the industry,” says Wallis.

Spotless Stadium at Sydney Showground is in for a Spring and Summer like it has never seen before.

At the time of writing this article we have just one more Giants game to go before we tick off another successful AFL season. The recent Giants v Swans game saw a crowd of just under 20 000 come to see our Stadium, many for the first time. Our transition this year from Royal Easter Show to AFL field has, in my humble opinion, been our best yet. Another hectic Show period saw just over 4000 square metres of turf replaced this year with our shortest window yet between Easter Show and AFL footy of 28 days. Graeme Colless and his team at Evergreen Turf did a fantastic job of having the new turf in and ready for action in our short time frame.

It is quite a demanding time during this transition from Agricultural Show Ring to an elite AFL playing surface. Not too many Stadiums around the Country, and arguably the World, have to put up with Showjumping, Rodeo, Monster Trucks, Grand Parades, Tent pegging, Polo and many more weird and wonderful events during a 14 day period and then transform in to a professional sports field. The strict AFL criteria demands a high level of playability about their surfaces and seeing what is thrown at our ground during the Royal Easter Show makes the transition that much more challenging.

Over the next few months, here at Spotless Stadium, we will be taking on a couple of major projects that should keep us busy few the next few years.

Immediately following our last AFL game, construction will start on an extra three sets of footings for our drop in wickets. Since securing a 10 year deal with the Sydney Thunder, work has been going on to purchase three more drop in wickets. We went through the process last year of having Strathayr build one wicket from scratch which was used during our brief dabble at the Big Bash last summer. After many meetings and discussions, it was agreed that we would purchase three wickets from ANZ Stadium and now the logistical process has begun of transporting them from one venue to another. The plan is to cut the ANZ wickets in half, transport them up out of the Stadium with the Strathayr Transportayr, wind their way across Olympic Boulevard, dropped behind Spotless Stadium, joined back together, then installed into our ground in one piece. Sound pretty simple really!

All the guys at Cricket NSW, Strathayr, Loges and his boys at ANZ have been fantastic in helping make this a smooth process. What could possibly go wrong?

Another project on our list of jobs this Spring, is the construction of Practice wickets. A practice facility is a requirement from

our arrangement with Sydney Thunder. A block of seven permanent wickets will be built on the Howie Lawns which is within our Sydney Showground site. The Howie Lawn area is the area used for Dog judging during the Royal Easter Show. Again, this is starting to show the very much diversified nature of our venue and the direction in which we are heading. Much like the main Stadium playing surface, this area will now host Cricket, Dog judging, Music Festivals, V8 Super Car setup and other various exhibitions and events. After all things Cricket are constructed and set up and ready for

action, the Stadium moves into another phase of our constantly changing lives, ‘Stadium Super Trucks’. NASCAR legend Robby Gordon has developed this series in the US and is bringing the guys out to Spotless Stadium at the end of October. A similar production, from a ground point of view, to Monster Trucks, the majority of the surface will be covered with geo fabric, ply boards and then up to 4500 ton of soil. These guys race ten cars at a time around tight winding track with jumps everywhere, and from all reports plenty of carnage.

When the dust has settled after the Super Trucks bump out, we roll into the Stereo Sonic Music Festival. Up to 55 000 punters attend this twelve hour Festival to soak up all things Dance Music. The concert and festival promoters are pretty good these days at protecting the turf, often armed with the knowledge that any repair jobs will be done at their expense. Around 18 000 square metres of various turf protection will be used to cover the whole playing surface to ensure minimal damage.

From Music Festival to Cricket. Mid December sees our first full summer as a cricketing venue, when the Thunder takes on the Sydney Sixers in the local derby. This will be a great opportunity for our venue to make a mark on the national stage with our first real tenant as a summer sport.

21

At the conclusion of the Big Bash League, Spotless Stadium will again be put into Show mode. With a very early Show next year starting in mid-March, our staff here will be trying to get as much strong healthy Couch growth as possible in order to withstand the rigours of another Royal Easter Show. Rehearsals in the Stadium will start at the end of February for the entertainment throughout the Show. This will range from a dance troupe of 500 to Rodeo set up and horse trials.

Venues such as these are becoming more and more multi use. It’s a cliché, but it’s true. Always hesitant to say no to a prospective hirer or event of any nature, we here at Spotless Stadium at Sydney Showground are forever seeking to push the boundaries with what the ground is capable of and through hard work and dedication we hope to be a successful and popular venue for years to come. So, drop by and say hello next time you’re at the Show, Concert, Cricket, Music Festival, AFL, Super Trucks…………

Last year the Mark Paterson-Hill, aka ‘Patto’ was studying for his degree in Sports Science, working part time behind the bar at the Guildford Leagues Club and a few days as a labourer for a small turf maintenance company to make ends meet. Whilst understanding that the way forward was to carve out a career, Pattos’ enthusiasm was starting to subside for is chosen studies and he had begun to establish a real desire to work outdoors in a manual trade, after his diverse experiences with the local Sydney company he was labouring for, Sports Turf Specialists. Off the back of this Patto approached STS to put him on as a full time employee as he was loving spending the days outdoors and undertaking a multitude of various turf, horticultural and landscape tasks. The previous 6 months working for STS did not go unnoticed, Patto’s tireless work ethic and genuine interest in the trade made the decision an easy one for the MD at Sports Turf Specialists, Jesse Bartlett. His full time employment begun immediately -11th December 2014.

Patto was employed as an apprentice and enrolled in TAFE to study Sports Turf management, which he attends Ryde Campus every Wednesday. Something he does enjoy and every Thursday on his return to work he is full of questions and discussion on various topics he has learnt at TAFE the day prior, and always discussing scenarios in which he may be able to apply his new found knowledge. TAFE teacher Mark Mitchell, says “having a student like Mark in the class helps motivate his fellow class mates to gain more knowledge regarding the sports turf industry and also shows that even at this early stage of their career, that opportunities like the one present to Mark, are achievable”. Patto has been a crew member for some very large scale projects in the last 12 months, reconstructing, resurfacing and maintaining some high profile stadiums in both Australia and Asia. The most recent he has returned from a 4 week stint in Singapore, where Patto spent time as part of the grounds crew and turf farm crew as part of HG Sports Turf Singapore Sports Hub Project.

“Singapore was an amazing experience! I have now been over there three times with the HG team, and I have now been part of every stage of the project, preparation of the Eclipse Stabilised Turf on the farm, harvest and installation of the Turf into the stadium, and my last trip has been spent maintaining the turf and preparing it for a month ready for the visiting Barclays Premier League football teams. It’s so different to here in Sydney, it is just constantly hot and humid! The stadium itself is similar to Etihad in Melbourne in that it has a retractable roof and various different microclimates around the ground which can make managing turf a challenge. We were constantly moving the Synthetic Grow Lights around and maintaining the turf around them, but I learnt a huge amount from my trip and am so grateful to HG Sports Turf for extending me the opportunity. I will definitely be able to

apply some of the knowledge and techniques I learnt into our work at home”.

Nathan Humphreys, General Manager of HG Sports Turf NSW commented on Marks enthusiasm for the trade; “Patto is a breath of fresh air! He is certainly one of a dying breed in our industry, so keen to learn and to ask questions and never afraid to really get his hands dirty and do the hard work, a trait that seems to be missing from those kids entering the workforce nowdays. I

was extended similar opportunities for ‘having a go’ when I was of a similar age and those experiences kept me in the industry. In my opinion the turf industry can ill-afford to lose any employees, especially motivated youngsters like Patto. I think he will have a long and prosperous career in our great industry.”

The bulk of the work that Patto undertakes in his position with Sports

Turf Specialists is related to sports field maintenance and preparation. Jesse Bartlett comments that “employing Mark

would probably be the smartest yet easiest decision I have made since starting STS. Patto has an attitude that brings the best out of the people around him including myself. I know that I have to constantly refresh my knowledge of the industry in order to stay a step ahead of him. Patto’s normal day to day activities would include, assisting in the maintenance and preparation of Old Kings ovals outfield and cricket wickets and many landscape maintenance projects but as a first year apprentice has the opportunity to experience more than most greenkeepers will in a career. The opportunities extended to Sports Turf Specialists from HG Sports Turf have given Patto an eye opening experience to the many different aspects of the industry that would not be

experienced in our regular day to day activities. As an employee you can’t fault Mark and I know he will have many opportunities ahead of him both within Sports Turf Specialists and in the Greenkeeping industry.”

As an avid cricketer and NRL fan he has the ambition to one land himself in a major multi purpose sporting venue. “I have been a part of some pretty interesting projects in the last 12 months, and am amazed at what these venues have to do to get games on places like ANZ Stadium and the Singapore Sports Hub (Singapore

National Stadium) where the whole configuration of the stadium can change overnight, stands moving in and out, turf moving in and out, fields being changed over…. From the minute one event finishes the place is buzzing! People turn up for the next event the following day and are none the wiser to what went on behind the scenes to get the place up and running again, I think it would be great to lead a team and be part of making something like that happen!’

For many years now irrigation design has been based on the principle that sprinklers must throw head to head. This means that the water from each sprinkler must reach the next sprinkler in the system. The idea is that this will provide relatively even watering of the irrigated area.

This principle is based on the nature of sprinkler profiles. These profiles represent the volume of water applied by a sprinkler head over the distance of its coverage. The sprinkler profile is a graphic representation of the water applied by the sprinkler.

From these examples of sprinkler profiles we can see that sprinklers actually apply water in a somewhat haphazard fashion. You might think that these particular profiles have been selected to demonstrate the point but this is not the case. These are the profiles of some of the major sprinkler manufacturer’s biggest sellers into the premium sports turf market and were randomly selected from an independent data base source.

The idea of having sprinklers throwing head to head is that the water applied between the sprinklers will now be more evenly applied as the combination of the water applied by the two sprinklers will even out the application of water over the irrigated area.

Sports Turf Sprinkler Design and Performance - Part 1By Rex Sullings, Aqueduct Consultancy

Sample Sprinkler Profiles

Head to Head Irrigation Design Principles.

Page 27: STA Tasmania Turf NSW Spotless Stadium ready for a big Summer 45 STA.pdf · NSW Golf Day Review Page 5 Turf NSW Update Pages 16 NSW Member Profi le - Jordan Roach Page 6 Toro Graduate

27

The above diagram demonstrates the principle of head to head sprinkler coverage. The two light blue lines represent the profiles of two sprinklers positioned at each side of the irrigated area. The dark blue line represents the combined application of the two sprinklers and it is plain to see that there is some merit to the principle but the coverage is still not really very even.

In order to be able to design a head to head irrigation system we need to know how far a sprinkler actually throws water. Sprinkler profiles also provide us with this information as they show us where the sprinkler “runs out” of water. This is the point furthest from the sprinkler where the application of water reaches zero.

Unfortunately a close examination of sprinkler profiles also reveals that some sprinklers tail off quite slowly while others tail off very sharply. It is this inconsistency in the application of water at the end of the throw of the sprinkler which makes it very difficult to determine the effective radius of throw of the sprinkler. It also raises a serious question in my mind as to the validity of designing irrigation systems according to the head to head principle when it is so difficult to determine where the sprinkler throw ends.

An examination of the major manufacturer’s recommended spacing for various sprinklers soon demonstrates that there are a number of methods being used to determine the radius of throw of sprinklers. Various interpretations are used for the

definition of the radius of throw. Some manufacturers use the distance at which the last drop of water falls while it seems some try to determine the “effective” distance of throw by picking a volume slightly higher than zero to determine the throw of a sprinkler.

It seems to me from my extensive observations and examinations of the data available and provided by the manufacturers that we basically have no real idea of what number to use. In fact it soon becomes obvious that effective irrigation design is not as simple as it seems as it is very difficult to design head to head when it is so difficult to determine just how far a sprinkler actually throws water.

Furthermore sprinkler profiles only represent the application of water in a direct line between the sprinklers. The situation becomes far more complicated when we take into consideration the fact that sprinklers generally operate in a circular fashion.

In our next article we will examine what happens when we look at sprinklers that operate in a circular fashion and the impact this has on water distribution and irrigation system design.

Head to Head Irrigation Design Principles continued..
