ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We would like to send our special thanks to Ms. Kim Anh and Ms. Ngoc Lan- our

Statistics teachers for their helpful guidelines during the time we conducted this project due to

great support and help. In addition, we are thankful to FMT students, who contributed their time

to complete our questionnaire and gave many helpful comments to our survey. However,

because this is the very first time we have ever carried out a Statistics project, we cannot avoid

mistakes and irrelevance. Therefore, we hope to receive more comments, feedbacks and

suggestions so that we can improve our skills and get some experiences for future projects.

Abstract

This study is designed to determine how FMT students feel about the

sport facilities in Hanoi University. To conduct this survey, from the

population of all students in FMT, we chose the sample of 100

randomly. Our questionnaire consists of six Multiple-Choice Questions.

The data collected is used to perform one sample z-test for proportion

on infer that at 5% level of significance, at least 60% of FMT students

will be satisfied playing sport at Hanoi University stadium. There are

also many other results and information to make this issue clearer for

the readers.

I. Introduction

Playing sports is always an important thing for everyone in general as well as FMT students in

particular. A comfortable place to play sports not only helps people feel interested in exercises

but also enhances the effect of the sports on health. Due to a very tight timetable and the

enormous pressure of the specialized subjects, playing sports is essential for FMT students.

Therefore, Hanoi University has built facilities to help the students play sports, even beyond the

physical education curriculum. Nowadays, there are a large number of students playing sports at

university stadium regularly. That represents the satisfaction of many students for Hanoi

University sports facilities. However, public sports venues are growing and growing, which have

attracted many students to participate because of the quality and abundance of facilities.

This research was conducted to investigate about the satisfaction levels of students about Hanoi

University’s sports material foundations. This report will be divided into six parts. Firstly, we

present about the method used in order to approach and illustrate the survey’s results. Secondly,

we apply these methods to make conclusion whether the initial assumption is true or not. Finally,

recommendation is final part which supports for our studies.

II. Methodology

1. Population and Sample

Population: 1000 students of Faculty of Management and Tourism (FMT), Hanoi

University.

Sample: 100 students from the population, which presents characteristics of the

population.

2. Questionnaire Design

The research focuses on the favorite of FMT’s students about sports facilities at Hanoi

University. Because of short timing, we build the questionnaire which includes five relevant

questions but we make sure that this provides meaningful information closely relating to the

given factor to help us obtain data for our research project. We attach the questionnaire in

appendix 1

Page 6: STA 1 Project Report_Tut3 BA12_Ms.Ngoc Lan.docx

In the questionnaire, the first question was designed to know what sport students like

playing most. The second question is aimed that we want to know how much time FMT’s

students spend per day playing sports. Afterwards, we can have information about where

students play (home, university or other places) by building the third question. The most

important question is listed as a key to evaluate the level of satisfaction of students about the

sport facilities with four criteria and each has five levels for students to score briefly. Finally,

after having the specific judgments about the sport facilities, the fifth question is to collect the

opinion of FMT students about their overall feelings about sport facilities.

3. Sample size

The total population is 1000 FMT students, thus we should have a sample size of several

tens taken into account. We expect the sample estimates to be reasonably accurate, then we base

on some test statistics and its assumptions. We intend to use Z-test for population with

assumption of proportion and we decide that the sample size of 100 is considered to be suitable

and large enough to ensure the reliability of the test for the population.

4. Sampling method and data collection

We decide to use simple random sampling method (without replacement) to gain a relatively

accurate result for the survey. Our population is all students of FMT department and we only chose

randomly 100 of that to survey.

We distributed questionnaire for 100 students who are in the list of sample. We list 100

students who completed the survey and assign each student a number ranging from 1 to 100. To complete

the list, we use Excel with the following commands:

o Select B1, fill 1

o Choose tab HomeàEditàFillàSeries

o Fill in the Series box as guided in Picture1

Page 7: STA 1 Project Report_Tut3 BA12_Ms.Ngoc Lan.docx

After collecting the questionnaire, we record the data in Excel and use the

information to draw charts, tables.

5. Data processing

Microsoft Excel is the most often used tool to calculate necessary statistics

(standard deviation, mean, median, and mode …)

6. Significance level of test

As the project requires the relative accuracy, we believe that the level of

significance of test α = 0.05 is most suitable.

Sport choices

The bar chart shows FMT student’s choices about sport. The most popular choice is

group “Badminton, Volleyball, Table tennis”, which 36 students choose to play. The second

position belongs to group “Walking, Running” that has 3 less students playing. Eighteen

(including 13 men) and 12 (female) students took “Football” and “Aerobics” options

respectively, which are reasonable results. Finally, just 11 students decide to play other kinds of

sport.

2. Question 2

How much time FMT students spend play-ing sport per day

Less than 1 hour1-2 hoursMore than 2 hours

Page 9: STA 1 Project Report_Tut3 BA12_Ms.Ngoc Lan.docx

The collected results of the question about how much time FMT students take to play

sport in a day is presented at pie chart above. The largest figure is 62% of students spending

less than 1 hour per day playing sport. In contrast, only 5% told that their average time for sport

per day is greater than 2 hours. Besides, “1-2 hours” choice that is good for health in scientific

point accounted for 33%. It can be seen clearly that the majority of students should spend more

time for sport every day.

3. Question 3

To find the fact that whether FMT students actually use the sport facilities at university

frequently or not, we had the research question and the answers of students are showed as the

chart above. The pie chart represents information on the places that FMT’s students usually play

sports: at home, at Hanoi University and other places. As can be seen from the chart, the

proportion of people spending time for sport activities at Hanoi University and other options are

quite the same. There are 31% of students who are used to play at Hanoi University and home.

While 38 % of people asked said that they usually come to other places such as: parks, public

stadium and places for rent to do exercises and play sports. It was the largest sector.

The result of question 4 in the bar chart demonstrates the level of satisfaction belonging

to each separate facilities at Hanoi University, it includes stadium (having running race),

volleyball court, table tennis room and exercise room. There are five levels of satisfaction from 1

to 5 correspond to very bad, bad , normal, good and very good estimation respectively.

Regarding to the stadium condition, the majority of student taking part in this survey

(60%) are satisfied with university stadium. In fact, 31% of FMT’s students gave the mark of 4

while 29% of them felt very satisfied and mark 5. In contrast, 6% shared that the current stadium

is quite bad; it does not meet the demand of their need, so they marked 2. Similarly, 10% of

people having the strong dissatisfaction ticked at only 1.The students who do not satisfy account

for 10%.

About the volleyball court, nearly a half of students expressed that Hanoi University

courts are normal in comparison with other colleges (46%). Over one fourths of them are

interested in volleyball court and marked it 4. Only 3% of the students feel really satisfied and

gave the highest mark. Nevertheless, the percentage of dissatisfaction student giving 1 and 2 are

approximately the same, 10% and 12% respectively.

Table tennis and exercise room are not as popular as the first two sport facilities. The

highest proportion of survey participants appraising for this two facilities are in 3 blanks, exactly

the same stood at 39%.However, the volume of satisfaction of them is quite difference. When

Page 11: STA 1 Project Report_Tut3 BA12_Ms.Ngoc Lan.docx

being asked about table tennis room, the percentage of people feeling satisfied is nearly smaller

than dissatisfaction but the difference is only 4%.That means there are 22% of FMT students

giving 2 as bad and 10% of students tick 1 as very bad, while also 22% are quite enjoyable to

mark 4 and 6% really are enjoyable with table tennis room. For exercise room, the number of

students who do not feel pleasurable is nearly three times as many as the number of student

feeling pleasurable.

IV. Results and findings of the hypothesis test

1. Research question

The objective of our project is to answer the question that whether there is enough evidence

at the 5% significance level to indicate that the proportion of FMT students satisfied with the

sport facilities at Hanoi University is at least 60%.

Assumption

The population is followed the binomial distribution because:

The experiment consists of 100 identical trials

Each trial has two outcome: success( satisfied with sport facilities) or

failure(not satisfied with sport facilities)

The probability p of a success remain constant for each trial

Each trial of the experiment is independent

The sample proportion is approximately normally distributed

because the sample size is large enough:

np=100∗0.6=60>5 n(1−p)=100(1−0.6)=40>5

We decided to use Z test of proportion.2. Data analysis

In this case, there are two categories: satisfied or not satisfied with sport facilities at Hanoi

University. Based on the result of survey, 72 out of 100 FMT students are pleased with the Hanoi

University sport facilities.

Page 12: STA 1 Project Report_Tut3 BA12_Ms.Ngoc Lan.docx

Sample size: 100 Level of significant α=0.05 Hypothesized population proportion: p=60 %

Hypothesis testing procedure:

The step statistical inference process is as follow:

Step 1: Select the null and the alternative hypothesisH0: p=0.6HA: p>0.6

Step 2: Z test for proportion: z= p̂−p

√ p (1−p )n

Step 3: Level of significant α=0.05⟹z0.05 =1.645

Step 4: Decision rule: reject H0 if z>z0

Step 5: Calculate the value of the test statistic

Number of successes: x=72

Sample proportion: p̂= xn= 72

100

z=p̂−p

√ p (1−p )n

=

72100

−0.6

√ 0.6∗0.4100

=2.449

Step 6: Conclusion:Since z = 2.449 >z0.05 ⟹ reject H0 at α=0.05

Conclusion: there is enough statistical evidence to infer that at significant level of 0.05, at least 60% FMT students feel satisfied with the sport facilities at Hanoi University.

V. Evaluation

1. Limitation

We have conducted objective project based on the collection of results of questionnaires

distribution, there are still some problems occurred. For example, because of the scare about

Page 13: STA 1 Project Report_Tut3 BA12_Ms.Ngoc Lan.docx

private information, some students skipped giving their information such as full name, ID, major

or class and email address. It will be harder for us to have an accurate result.

It is hard for us to meet all students of FMT because of a large number of students with

different schedules or their absences sometimes. We collected the result randomly from 100

FMT students, so the errors or differences between statistic and parameter are still exists. We

cannot ensure that all students from FMT have the same idea with 100 randomly students.

Therefore, we use available information to estimate possible outcomes of population and draw

conclusion. Besides, timing is short so that we only chose 100 students as the sample size. That

means the sample size is quite small compared to population of 1000, hence, the hypothesis test

less accurate.

2. Implication

In spite of some limitations indicated above, it is undeniable that this study is a useful

reference for Physical Education Department to have a sight of their students’ satisfaction with

their facilities and subject. As a result, Physical Education Department can base on the

evaluation of FMT student to identify whether the facilities should be improved or not.

Moreover, from the hobby of FMT students, they can serve the subject that these students like,

hence, FMT students will study more effectively and reduce retake and restudy rate.

VI. Conclusion and Recommendation

According to the results of our project, we now have enough evidences to conclude that at

least 60% FMT students are satisfied with the sport (exercise) facilities at Hanoi University. We

used the questionnaire including 5 questions to interview randomly 100 FMT students. Although

the satisfaction degree of almost students is at a high level, just about 31% out of the total

students often play sports at school, which means that the school facilities are not the best choice

for them. Based on the statistics collected from our survey, it can be seen clearly that when

students spend time playing sports at school, most of them will choose the stadium as a good

place to play sports. We agree that the stadium area is quite large and favorable for sport

activities. Students do not need to spend money to rent another place to play sports; they can

Page 14: STA 1 Project Report_Tut3 BA12_Ms.Ngoc Lan.docx

come to the stadium because it's absolutely free. Students can play lots of different sports here,

so it can be said to satisfy people’s demands.

Basing on the collected result, our group proposes several recommendations to improve the

current situation and raise the number of students who are satisfied with school facilities. At first,

Hanoi University should focus on improving the quality of the stadium to serve many different

types of sport such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, jogging and so on. For example, many male

students want to play football at the stadium, however the quality of the football field surface

does not meet their needs. Specifically, grass grows a lot in football field surface, which leads to

many troubles in the football matches. To solve this problem, the school should plan to improve

the stadium surface quality, such as regular mowing grass or cleaning up the pitch.

Besides that, there is still a fairly complex problem and we think that it is the main cause of

student dissatisfaction with school facilities, namely the impact of the external. As you know,

Hanu students spend quite much time after class to play sports in the stadium. However, the

problem is that there are so many people coming from other places to play sports here, which

cause our students, do not have enough space. Therefore, we suggest that the security officers

should prevent people outside from playing sports at the stadium area.

In additions, the school should also improve and upgrade sport equipment and exercise

rooms so students will have more options and interest to exercise at school. For further research,

we recommend a wider scope with the larger number of students, which could provide different

results as each respondent with his or her own ability may have various attitudes and feelings to

this mentioned issue and different ways to cope with any difficulty caused by new specialized

majors at first stages. In addition, we are not experts in this field; limitation during the project is

inevitable; so, we are hopeful that our future project will be consulted by some experienced

people to make the result more persuasive.
