  • Class 6 S.St. Worksheet-2 (Geography)

Lesson 1 – Representation of Geographical Features.

Globe: “A globe is a three dimensional scale model of the Earth”. The word “globe”

comes from the Latin word globus, meaning round mass or sphere.

Maps: “A map is a flat, symbolic representation of the earth or a part of the earth’s

surface and it is drawn to a scale”. The scale is the proportion between the actual or

ground distance between two places on the earth and the distance between the same two

points on the map. The science of map making is called cartography.

    Types of maps

    1. Maps on the basis of scale

    2. Maps on the basis of content.

    1. Maps on the basis of scale:

    a) Small scale maps: These maps represent large areas of the earth. The purpose of such

maps is to show a small amount of detail about a large area. For e.g atlas maps.

    b) Large scale maps: These maps show large amount of details about a small area. For

    e.g a road map.

    2. Maps on the basis of content:

    a) Political maps: The maps showing the boundaries and areas of different countries and

    states are called political maps.

    b) Physical maps: Some of the maps show the physical features such as the continents

and oceans, the mountains, plains and plateaus, etc. They are called physical maps.

    c) Thematic maps: These are those maps that represent only particular features such as

types of weather or distribution of forests, industries, people or minerals.

  • Language of maps: Title, direction, scale, key and grid system are some of the important

    elements of the map.

    1. Title: All maps have a title which describes the reader what the map is about.

    2. Direction:

You might have observed an upright

arrow mark in the upper right hand

corner of a map. Tip of the arrow is

often marked with the letter „N‟. This

arrow indicates the direction of north

on the map. The arrow is called north

line. With the direction of north given

on the maps the other three main

directions – the east, the west and the

south can be easily found. These four

major directions are called the cardinal

    points of the compass.

Compass: A compass is a device consisting of a magnetic needle that is free to swing around. The

needle always points north and south when it is at rest.

    3. Key or symbols: Maps use symbols to show different features some of these symbols have definite or fixed meaning. They are called conventional signs.

    4. Scale: “A scale is the ratio between a unit distance on the map and the actual distance on the ground”.

    5. Grid System: It is a set of lines used to find the exact location of a place on a map.

    (i) Lines of Latitude: These are imaginary circular lines running

parallel to the equator. These run

east- west and are used to measure

    distance.

  • (ii) Lines of Longitudes: These are imaginary lines that bisect the globe

through the North and South poles.

There are 360º meridians of longitude

    Sketches and Plans

Some maps are drawn freehand. They are not drawn according to scale. Such a map is called sketch.

Sometimes maps are drawn at a very large scale. Such maps are called plans.

Answer the following question in brief.

    1. Define map. 2. Write any three basic elements of a map. 3. What is a compass? 4. Define Scale. 5. What is the difference between a map and a sketch? 6. Name the four cardinal points. 7. What is cartography? 8. What are conventional signs? 9. What is the importance of grid system?
