Advent and Christmas

Incarnation. That is what Christmas is all about. God Himself has condescended to come among us and take on human flesh. In the manger, Jesus is fully God and fully Man, and He comes to make us new. Through His holy life, His suffering and death, and His resurrection and ascension, He has achieved eternal victory. The curse is undone. Sin and evil are defeated. Heaven and nature sing. Behold this most blessed Child, the Son of God, who gives eternal life to all who will believe!

Advent is preparation for the coming of Jesus. We slow down and think about the meaning of what we celebrate. We mourn in lonely exile here. We fast. We pray. We rejoice in what is to come. We see the value of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem born of the Virgin Mary. We appreciate His miraculous presence, in this time between the times, among us at the altar in the Divine Service. We ponder His final return on the last day when all things will be made well.

Of all the things you do this month, let me encourage you to make this time holy. Advent and Christmas should be filled with God’s Word, for His Word is the only thing that can make this season holy. Celebrate like Christians. Learn to speak about this season with your family. Grab one of our, Behold the Child devotions that will take you right on through Advent to Epiphany. Make time for Advent Wednesday Services. Let the Christmas Day Divine Service be your highest priority. Draw near to your Savior, this blessed Child.

Advent and Christmas words – from Kurt FlathersAnd the Grinch, with his grinch feet ice-cold in the snow,Stood puzzling and puzzling. "How could it be so?It came without ribbons! It came without tags!It came without packages, boxes, or bags!"He puzzled and puzzed till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store.Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more!

This dialogue comes from the classic Dr. Suess, “How the Grinch stole Christmas”. The Grinch is pondering how, after stealing all the things he thought Christmas was all about, the people of Whoville could still celebrate. Christmas does not just mean a little bit more than packages and bows, lights and trees, and a jolly old fellow in red. It means a whole lot more. Christmas is the celebration of the incarnation of Christ. God comes down to us, takes on human flesh and blood. He becomes like us in every way, shape and form, but without sin. God the Father, sends his only Son, into our flesh, not to just stay a baby in a manger, but to become the Prophet, the Priest, the King, the Wonderful, the Counselor, the Everlasting God the Prince of Peace. Christmas is the celebration of God’s love for us, in sending what us poor, miserable sinners need….a Savior. This was the beginning of the plan of salvation since sin entered the world in Adam and Eve. God sends his Son to be our sacrifice, our atonement, our propitiation, our justification for our sins. He goes from a manger to a cross to shed His blood for our forgiveness. He gives us the greatest gift of His body and blood to redeem us by grace. He saves us from our sins. His empty tomb at Easter shows us that we are justified before God.

This Advent and Christmas season, focus more on the gift of a Savior, in Jesus Christ. That is the greatest gift, and it is free. No strings attached! It came without ribbons and bows, in a package of a little child in a manger. He was given to us so he could be given and shed for us in his true body and blood on the cross, for our forgiveness. Celebrate that this season!

Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord:Late in time behold him come, Offspring of the virgin’s womb.Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see, Hail, the incarnate Deity:Pleased, as man, with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel!

Preschool NewsChristmas is such a special time in our preschool classroom. We read stories daily throughout the month of December about the birth of our Savior, Jesus and His love for us. We sing songs and learn finger

rhymes as we prepare for the program we will put on for our families. In our centers we imitate many of the things we are doing at home: decorating a tree, playing with nativities, baking and decorating cookies, writing Christmas cards and making and wrapping gifts. Throughout every activity we are developing both social and academic skills. As always, we thank you for your continued support of this very important outreach ministry.
