A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR
Thanks to all of you who are giving so generously this season and who do so throughout the year. You are assisting
many individuals and families in giving gifts, food, companionship, financial assistance, and the Good News of God’s love revealed in Jesus and in our outreach.
Our outreach committee formed in response to our Heritage and Hopes day in September will be meeting this Wednesday, December 14 at 7 p.m. in the Scullen room. We are discovering where else in our area there are human needs that we as a parish can address. We are developing additional ways to reach out to people who are hurting in any way. Please consider participating in this meeting, especially if you have ideas on how we can make more of a difference in our parish, our neighborhood, are wider community.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR
THE RELIGIOUS The Retirement Fund for
Religious, which began in 1988, by the National Catholic Conference of United States Bishops, is an effort to assist religious communities to meet the needs of their elderly members. TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION is for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Please be generous! For more information see www.retiredreligious.org.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Knight at the Races
Mark your calendar! The St. Vincent Knights of Columbus will be holding a “Knight at the Races” on Saturday, January 14, 2017.
In support of this effort please consider an ad for the “Knight at the Races” racing form. The ads are $25, $50, and $100 respectively; all you need to do is to supply a business card or brochure and it can be placed
into the racing form. A $50 ad will offer the extra publicity that comes with being a race sponsor; a $100 ad will fill a whole page. Considering the inexpensive cost of these ads and the benefit to our parish, the good will to your company is not such a bad value. For more information call Fred Neugebauer at 330-867-2019 or Brian Walsh at 330-864-1242, or send your information to the rectory marked “c/o Knights of Columbus” by January 7, 2016. SPECIAL REQUEST!
Parishioners: Special request: Anticipating lots of children for this Christmas give-away, we would like to offer cereal, individual oatmeal packets, and hot chocolate. We will prepare
approximately 175 food bags this Friday, the 16th, and the Knights will deliver on Saturday, the 17th. We hope the “Spirit of Christmas” motivates you to deliver these items to the Rectory office, tomorrow through Thursday, 8:30 - 2:30. We are grateful for each and every donation! God bless you! St. Vincent de Paul Auxiliary
ALTAR SOCIETY St. Vincent de Paul Ornaments
The St. Vincent de Paul ornaments are still available at the rectory office through Christmas or until they are gone! Please make checks payable to the St. Vincent Altar Society in the amount of $20 for each ornament.
FAMILY PERSPECTIVES The question in today’s gospel demands a response: “Are you the one… or shall we look elsewhere?” Put another way: Do you live your life in the way that gives clear guidance to others? Or must children and friends look elsewhere for direction: to sitcoms, athletes and politicians! The Gospel asks, are you the one to bring Christ to others?
RETROUVAILLE WEEKEND Someone once said “Marriages may be made in heaven, but they sure take a lot of work on earth.” Have you become so distracted by outside pressure that you neglect your spouse? The Retrouvaille program can help you put your troubled marriage back on track. This program is supported by the Catholic diocese of Cleveland, but it is open to couples of all faiths. The next Cleveland Retrouvaille weekend will be held on January 20-22, 2017. A registration fee of $150 is required to confirm your reservation. For more information concerning the program, or to register, please call Marce or Liz Gliha in complete confidence at 440-357-6580, or 1-800-470-2230. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When the ties of affection and authority that bound Europe's Catholics unraveled in the sixteenth century, many cultures lost time-honored customs of faith. Some customs proved to be especially difficult for the reformers to wrest away from the people, specially those celebrated in the home. This week in Sweden, a country where the Catholic Church was disestablished four hundred years ago, a Catholic martyr from Sicily is the most beloved figure. St. Lucia, Lucy, is celebrated on December 13. The long-story-short is that Lucy was a Christian whose father wanted to marry her off to a pagan fellow,
and she rejected her father's authority. To make an example of her, her father had her killed. In the course of the brutal martyrdom, Lucy lost her beautiful eyes, but her vision was miraculously restored. The candles worn today by the eldest daughter of the family are tokens of the fire that refused to harm the saint. So this patroness of light and clear vision is revered on the shortest, darkest days of the Nordic winter. Before the reform of the Gregorian calendar in the sixteenth century, December 13 was the winter solstice. Today, young girls appear in the morning wearing lighted candles on their crowned heads (battery-operated now after many mishaps), and serve sweet rolls and coffee to everyone in the house. For the Swedes, who are not churchgoers, the "Lucias" are the official heralds of the holiday season and a sign of everyone's yearning for more light in this world. Europe once abounded with customs like this; the survival of this custom in Scandinavia is a sign of God's grace, and how fertile the soil is to receive the true message of Advent. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
