TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Did St. Francis of Assisi invent the Christmas crib? Not exactly, but his devotion to the Incarnation and his love for the poverty of the Christ Child certainly popularized this beloved custom. Long before Francis, it was a custom at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome to enshrine a rich image of Mary, gilded and bejeweled, embracing the child Jesus. This church was founded as a kind of home for the feast of Christmas in the fourth century. In 1223, Francis was ready to celebrate this feast in a new way. In the tiny city of Greccio, he asked friends to prepare a place where they could experience the poverty and suffering embraced by Christ in his birth. It was a living scene: an ox from the barn, an ass from the stable, and peasants standing in for shepherds and kings. The night of the celebration was beautiful, the weather was warm, and people came in crowds, bearing candles and singing hymns that echoed through the forest. Francis himself chanted the Gospel and preached. The custom spread quickly, and by the sixteenth century cribs were seasonal features not only in church, but in the home. On December 17, the liturgy begins to unfold the Lord's birth before us, and it's the right time to follow this beautiful tradition. In Germany, each night through-out Advent children prepare a bedding for the manger. At bedtime prayer, a child places a single straw in the manger for each act of devotion or virtue performed during the day. If the children are good, then the Christ child will have plenty of soft bedding when he is placed in the manger on Christmas. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Holy Orders

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Parents must be like John the Baptist, “a voice crying in the wilderness” of our consumer society. While society pressures us to shop until we drop the weeks until Christmas, you have the opportunity to “prepare the way of the Lord” in the lives of your children.

A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR

I begin with a quick reminder that this Thursday, December 8, is the holy day Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Mass

times are on December 8 at 6:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 5:30 p.m. On the previous evening, December 7, I will be available in church for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) at a special time from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. If need be, I will go longer. If you have not participated in this sacrament for a long time, you are encouraged to experience this sacrament of the Lord’s healing, merciful, reconciling love. Consider it an early Christmas gift you give to yourself. You may want to let others know of this opportunity as a way for them to reconnect with our Lord’s amazing grace. We also offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation every Saturday afternoon, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. With the awesome holy Feast of Christmas only three weeks away, please consider individuals you could invite and possibly accompany to one of our Christmas Masses. If you know people who have been away from celebrating Eucharist with our parish community, reach out to them. Let them know they are always welcome here. Let them see what your faith means to you and how enriching it is to be part of this vibrant community of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. Another reminder – if you know anyone home-bound who would cherish having someone bring them Communion on a regular basis, please contact our parish office. Give us their name, address, and phone number. We know there are many people out there whose lives can be uplifted by our reaching out. Your taking the time to do this might possibly make a significant difference in someone’s life. Our faith is the greatest gift we can share.

POINSETTIA DONATION

During the Christmas Season we think of our loved ones, past and present. The Altar Society extends an opportunity for you to remember your loved ones. A

flower donation of $10 will be used to enhance the beauty of our altar at Christmas and through-out the year. Please make your donations payable to St. Vincent Altar Society and either mail them to the parish office at 164 W. Market St., Akron, OH 44303 or put them in an envelope clearly marked “Poinsettia Donation” and place them in the collection basket. The deadline for donations and intentions to be printed is SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2015. Thank you!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

Knight at the Races Mark your calendar! The St. Vincent Knights of Columbus will be holding a “Knight at the Races” on Saturday, January 14, 2017.

In support of this effort please consider an ad for the “Knight at the Races” racing form. The ads are $25, $50, and $100 respectively; all you need to do is to supply a business card or brochure and it can be placed into the racing form. A $50 ad will offer the extra publicity that comes with being a race sponsor; a $100 ad will fill a whole page. Considering the inexpensive cost of these ads and the benefit to our parish, the good will to your company is not such a bad value. For more information call Fred Neugebauer at 330-867-2019 or Brian Walsh at 330-864-1242, or send your information to the rectory marked “c/o Knights of Columbus” by January 7, 2016.
