The Fig Tree

We’re all going to die.

It might happen through cruelty (like the Galileans killed by Pilate), or by accident (like those in Jerusalem killed when a tower fell upon them). But inevitably, we’re all going to die one way or another, and in the perspective of the long sweep of histo-ry, we’re going to die relatively soon.

Jesus tells a parable that portrays him as someone on our side, pulling for us. He’s the gardener who tells the master not to cut the fig tree down just yet. He promises to work with it and see if it can start bearing fruit. He tries to get some extra time for the fig tree. But even if the gardener succeeds in getting an extra year of the tree, it’s living on borrowed time.

Lent is a good time to think thoughts like that.

We are each created by God and put here on earth for a purpose. We may not know, this side of the grave, what our purpose is. But if we do our best, in the circumstances of our own life, to live as Jesus taught us to live, we will ac-complish our purpose. In the eyes of the world, what we do may not seem all that important. It won’t make me famous. But there is no greater, more important accomplishment than simply to do what it is God put us here to do.

We don’t always take this seriously. We don’t think we’re that important or that good. But the fact is each one of us is put here by God to accomplish something that no one else is given to accomplish. And we do that simply by doing the best to live the Gospel in the situations of our own life.

Am I doing it? Am I living the Gospel and thus having the effects that God wanted me to have on earth? If not, I’ve still got some time. Copyright 2006 From Little Books of the Diocese of Saginaw, Inc.

When was the last time you gave yourself a gift that will last forever? The Women’s Emmaus Retreat is just such a gift.

It is a time to renew and deepen your relationship with the Lord. It is also a vehicle to meet other women who are also seeking friendship.

This retreat is based on the scripture found in the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35. The main theme of the retreat is to discover, or rediscover, Jesus in our lives, and the im-portance of women ministering to women. This weekend we will have a representative from the Women’s Emmaus available after all Masses. At that time, we will have reservation forms available. If you are interested in attending the Women’s Emmaus Re-treat, please stop by this weekend to pick up a Reserva-tion Form. Any questions, please contact Michele Rumplasch (352) 350-2429 or Cynthia Van Nostrand (352) 330-0220.

Preparing for Lent Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and old-er, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, suffi-cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal an-other full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affect-ed, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Good Friday, April 3, 2015 is a day of fast and absti-nence. All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

“Help Us Help Others with Donations or Purchases”

If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.

OUTREACH AND FOOD PANTRY

When we pray, we may hear God's voice in the si-lence. Remember that the devil in C.S. Lewis writings told his apprentice to flood the person's environment with noise. Isn't that what we have today? Noise of tv, music, traffic, chatter, etc. are bombarding our environ-ment. Quiet time introduces prayer and meditation to reflect on how we can improve our life and the lives of people around us. A revitalization of personal and collec-tive prayer in our homes and churches could revolutionize our culture and give us the answers to deal with any crisis in our families as well as our community. God will hear us when we express gratitude and dedication to Him.

God heard prayers from the parish community when dedi-cated parishioners started the food pantry for our neigh-bors in need. He has inspired volunteers to collect food; bring food to the pantry from church; sort and shelve food; work with clients using prayer and keeping rec-ords; and distributing food the second and fourth Friday of the month. Prayer has sustained our personal assis-tants who see clients in their need. Volunteers use com-passion and prayer when following guidelines to help the poor.

We are fortunate to have office space and the food pantry at San Pedro Maldonado Mission Church in downtown Wildwood. This location is accessible to many clients who don't have a vehicle for transportation.

Prayer and almsgiving are disciplines of Lent. We can be generous of our time and talents by thanking God for our blessings; donating food and material things to the appropriate charities; and participating in activities that will help our spiritual growth.

Members of Outreach realize that there are many charities soliciting you for your donations. We thank you for your continued sup-port and prayer. A big thank you goes out to Parady Financial Group and their clients, who do-nated 1,124 pounds of food to our Food Pantry from their February food drive. St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is an equal oppor-tunity provider.

Food Pantry Requests items include the following; canned meat (chicken, ham, chili, etc.), canned ra-violi or spaghetti, cereal, corn muffin mix, pinto beans, soup and cookies. Laundry detergent, soap, hygiene and paper products are also appreciat-ed. Please remember that out of date and opened food cannot be distributed.

Immediate Need for Host Families! During academic year 2013-14, 18 students coming from both the Dominican Republic and China attended Trinity Catholic High School. This academic year we hosted 25 students and added Korea to our list of coun-tries. We give thanks for the 16 families who

welcomed these students into their homes. For academic year 2015-16, we are expanding even further and are, therefore, in need of additional host families. We invite your assistance with our expansion of this ex-citing program. Won’t you open your home to one of our new students? We offer a generous monthly stipend to cover living expenses. The only family/home requirements are: A willingness to welcome a student from another country into your family. A private bedroom (the bathroom can be shared). A wireless internet connection. English must be the primary language spoken in the home.

Please prayerfully consider joining the group of host families who embrace these students. For many, this experience has become a life-changing event!

Express your interest as soon as possible to Jennifer Beckett, our International Program Director, at 352-427-5023 or [email protected]. We are now placing students for academ-ic year 2015-16, which begins in August.
