Welcome

A warm welcome to everyone gathered here this morning, especially if this is your first visit to St Mark’s.

We celebrate the diversity of our human experience –spirituality, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation,

to name just a few.As one body we discover deeper truths

than are possible when we remain apart.

Our celebration is richer for your part in it. We are glad that you are here today.

About this service

Today is Remembrance Sunday when we are invited to remember all who have lost their lives through armed conflict, as well as all those who suffer as a consequence of war. It is also a time to pray for peace so we have the opportunity to renew our commitment to upholding the dignity of every human being. We pray that we may embody the change we wish to see in the world.

LARGE PRINT booklets (in yellow) are availableat the back of church if you would find that easier to follow.

To use the Induction Loop, please select theT setting on your hearing aid.

Please silence or switch off mobile phones and pagers before the service begins. Thank you.

ALLERGY ADVICE: we use gluten and dairy free bread at Communion and our wine contains alcohol. An alternative cup with alcohol-free wine is available, please ask for this at the rail.

Preparing for Worship

Will It Be So Again?by Cecil Day Lewis

Will it be so againThat the brave, the gifted are lost from view,

And empty, scheming menAre left in peace their lunatic age to renew?

Will it be so again

Must it be always soThat the best are chosen to fall and sleep

Like seeds, and we too slowIn claiming the earth they quicken, and the old usurpers reap

What they could not sow?

Will it be so again –The jungle code and the hypocrite gesture?

A poppy wreath for the slainAnd a cut-throat world for the living? that stale imposture

Played on us once again?

Will it be as before –Peace, with no heart or mind to ensue it,

Guttering down to warLike a libertine to his grave? We should not be surprised: we knew it

Happen before.

Shall it be so again?Call not upon the glorious dead

To be your witnesses then. The living alone can nail to their promise the ones who said

It shall not be so again.

Welcome

Opening Hymn

O GOD, OUR HELP in ages past,our hope for years to come,our shelter from the stormy blast,and our eternal home;

Under the shadow of thy thronethy saints have dwelt secure;sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood,or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God,to endless years the same.

A thousand ages in thy sightare like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the nightbefore the rising sun.

Time, like an ever-rolling stream, will bear us all away;they fly forgotten, as a dreamdies at the op’ning day.

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, A setting of Psalm 90be thou our guard while troubles last, Isaac Watts (1674-1748)and our eternal home. Tune: St Anne

AttendingReading: Wisdom 6.12-16, read by Michael Bayley

WISDOM is radiant and unfading, and she is easily discerned by those who love her,and is found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her. One who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty, for she will be found sitting at the gate. To fix one’s thought on her is perfect understanding, and one who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care, because she goes about seeking those worthy of her,and she graciously appears to them in their paths, and meets them in every thought.

How is this God’s word of life for us today?

Afterwards we share a time of quiet

Gradual HymnGREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS,O God my Father, there is no shadowof turning with thee;thou changest not,thy compassions, they fail not;as thou hast beenthou for ever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulnessGreat is thy faithfulness!Morning by morningnew mercies I see;all I have neededthy hand hath provided, great is thy faithfulness,Lord, unto me!

2. Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, sun, moon and starsin their courses above, join with all naturein manifold witnessto thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

3. Pardon for sinand a peace that endureth, thine own dear presenceto cheer and to guide;strength for todayand bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Gospel – Matthew 25.1-13

The good news is proclaimed from the heart of the worshipping community.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said, ‘The kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.

As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, “Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.”Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, “Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.” But the wise replied, “No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.”

And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, “Lord, lord, open to us.” But he replied, “Truly I tell you, I do not know you.”

Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon – Revd Sue Hammersley

The sermon is followed by a time of quiet for reflection

The kingdom of God is justice and peaceand joy in the Holy Spirit.Come, Lord, and open in us the gates of your kingdom. Taizé.

Your kingdom come. God of justice, truth and love.Your will be done. Inspire us with your Spirit

to let your Kingdom come. Amen.

Prayers of PenitenceLet us acknowledge before Godthe sins and shortcomings of the world;its pride, its selfishness, its greed;its evil divisions and hatreds.Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peacewhich God wills for all people.

Silence for reflection.

MERCIFUL GOD,we confess that we have sinnedin thought, word and deed.We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are,and direct what we shall be;that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen.

God who is both power and love, forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by the Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ. Amen.

FOR THE healing of the nations,Lord, we pray with one accord;for a just and equal sharingof the things that earth affords. To a life of love in actionhelp us rise and pledge our word.

3

All that kills abundant living, let it from the earth be banned;pride of status, race or schoolingdogmas that obscure your plan.In our common quest for justicemay we hallow life's brief span.

2

Lead us, Father, into freedom, from despair your world release;that, redeemed

from war and hatred, all may come and go in peace.Show us how

through care and goodnessfear will die and hope increase.

4

You, creator-God, have writtenyour great name on humankind;for our growing in your likenessbring the life of Christ to mind;that by our response and serviceearth its destiny may find.

AbidingPreparation

Tokens of our response to God, bread and wine, and the collection, are offered.

We pray together,

ETERNAL GOD,we offer this bread, made from the grain of life;we bring this wine, symbol of life poured out;we give this money, the work of our hands.Receive them for the renewal of the world.

The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

Let us pray (we sit or kneel)

MAY GOD BE WITH YOUand also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to God.

Let us give thanks to our gracious God:It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed good and right,to offer you our thanks and praise. For you are the hope of the nations, the builder of the city that is to come.

Your love made visible in Jesus Christbrings home the lost, restores the sinnerand gives dignity to the despised. In his face your light shines out, flooding lives with goodness and truth, gathering into one in your kingdoma divided and broken humanity.

Therefore with allwho give voice in your creationwe glorify your name, for ever praising you and singing:Holy, holy, holy Lord,God of truth and love, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he, O blessed is he,who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Setting from ‘St Anne’s MassHosanna in the highest. by James Macmillan (b 1959)

Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his exampleand obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spiritthese gifts of bread and winemay be to us his body and his blood;who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.In the same way, after supper, he took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them, saying:Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Therefore, heavenly Father,we remember his offering of himselfmade once for all upon the cross;we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension;we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cupwe make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord.

Great is the mystery of faith:Christ has died:Christ is risen:Christ will come again.

Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy giftsin the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your loveand unite us in the body of your Son,Jesus Christ our Lord.

Through him, and with him, and in him,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven,we worship you, Father almighty,in songs of everlasting praise:

Blessing and honour and glory and powerbe yours for ever and ever. Amen.

Common Worship, Prayer A.

A Prayer for those who wish to remember, but can’t;

God, I have no memory of war.Yet, I remember what it’s like to feel scared;I remember what it’s like to feel sad;I remember what it’s like to lose something precious to me.Help me to use my own memories in understandingwhat this act of remembrance is all aboutso that I can join my prayerswith those who do remember. Amen. Rachel Parkinson

Act of Remembrance Led by Roy Godden

They shall grow not oldas we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

BlessingGO FORTH into the world in peace;be of good courage;hold fast to that which is good;render to no one evil for evil;strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak;help the afflicted; honour all people;

and the blessing of God,Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer,be among you, and all whom you love, both living and departed, now and always. Amen.

Final Hymn

GOD OF THE NATIONS, God of all who live,How many gave us all they had to give! Now, in remembrance of our nation’s dead,In honesty and pride let prayers be said.

Some died sustained by promise of success,Some in defeat’s despair and bitterness; Some died the victims of incompetence:Through years of peril they were our defence.

“When you remember us,” we hear them cry,“Take greater care how you let others die;Whatever God you worship, or if none,Pray that the nations learn to live as one.”

We lay our wreaths, perform the simple rite,Anxious that we may see in clearer light,As those for whom a nation’s blood was shed,How best to serve the living and the dead.

God of the nations, God of friend and foe,Under whose judgement all must come and go,
