The readings for September 11 Twenty-Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time Reading I: Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14 Reading II: 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Gospel: Luke 15:1-32

Luke keeps assuring his readers of God’s amazing acceptance of sinners. This conviction is central, of course, to all New Testament writings. God makes the first move, even before the sinner is ready to return. Luke recounts three parables to respond to the snobbery of some of the Pharisees and scribes. Jesus directs these three parables at the self-righteous people, the people who think God must follow their rules. Such people think they determine whom and how God will forgive. But Jesus says God follows God’s own rules. Christians are being told not to imitate the religious “snobs” of Jesus’ day. They must let God be God and not presume to tell God who can be saved and how people must be saved.

Question of the Week Has there been a time in your life when you received more than you might have deserved?

    Baptisms

RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults who are not Catholic can be initiated and welcomed into the Catholic Church. The RCIA process reaches out to everyone . . . inviting birth and rebirth in faith. Our welcome also includes cradle Catholics and anyone else who wants to learn more about the treasures of their Catholic faith. RCIA is a wonderful opportunity to renew your knowledge of Catholicism, and more importantly to recommit yourself to the faith you profess as an adult Catholic. This is the time to give this opportunity serious consideration. Sessions start on Tuesday, October 4, and will be completed during Holy Week. Call Ray Ortman in the parish office for information.

Patrick McKinney took great picture at Sunset Fest and created a video slideshow that Emily uploaded to You Tube. The links to both are now posted on our website and our Facebook page at http://stvictoria.net/home/sunset-fest-was-sensational/

Warm Your Whistle Now that our Summer Outdoor Masses have ended, you are invited to join us for Friday morning Masses at 8 a.m. and stay to “warm your whistle” with a hot cup of coffee, fresh donut holes and fellowship starting this coming Friday, September 9. Everyone is welcome.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta This Sunday, September 4, Pope Francis will celebrate the canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. I doubt there is a person who has not heard of this tiny woman who will now be known as Saint Mother Teresa, Saint of Mercy.

In her own words she said: By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.”

The youngest child of Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu, she was born August 26, 1910, in Skopje, a city situated at the crossroads of Balkan History. She was Baptized Gonxha Agnes. She received her First Communion at the age of five and a half and was confirmed in November 1916. The death of her father when she was eight years old, left the family in financial straits. Her mother raised her children firmly and lovingly and that, along with influences from the Jesuit Parish of the Sacred Heart, greatly influenced Gonxha.

At the age of 18, moved by a desire to become a missionary, Gonxha left her home to join the Institute of the Blessed Virgin, known as the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland. There she received the name of Sister Mary Teresa. In December she departed for India, arriving in Calcutta on January 6, 1929, where she was assigned to the Loreto Entally Community. She taught at St. Mary’s School for Girls. In May 1937 she made her final Profession of Vows and remained there for 20 years teaching and later serving as principal.

In September 1946, on a train ride from Calcutta to Darjeeling for her annual retreat, Mother Teresa received her “inspiration,” her “call.” Over the next months, Jesus revealed to her the desire of His heart, revealing His pain at the neglect of the poor, His sorrow at their ignorance of Him and His longing for their love. He asked Mother Teresa to establish a religious community, Missionaries of Charity, dedicated to the service of the poorest of the poor. On December 21, she went for the first time to the slums to visit those suffering and dying. On October 7, 1950, the congregation of the Missionaries of Charity was officially established in the Archdiocese of Calcutta. By 1960, Mother Teresa began to send her Sisters to other parts of India, and later she began sending Sisters to other countries including the former Soviet Union, Albania and Cuba. In following years, she founded orders for men including those of brothers and priests as well orders for lay people.

Her entire life and labor bore witness to the joy of loving, the greatness of dignity of every human person, the value of little things done faithfully and with love and surpassing worth of friendship with God. Over the years, Mother Teresa received numerous awards for her work, including the Nobel Peace Prize. She received both praise and attention “for the glory of God and in the name of the poor.”

Upon her death in 1997, Mother Teresa’s Sisters numbered nearly 4,000 members who were established in 610 foundations in 123 countries. Less than two years after her death, in view of her reputation of holiness and the favors reported, Pope John Paul II permitted the opening of her Cause of Canonization. On December 20, 2002, he approved the decrees of her heroic virtues and miracles. Today, we celebrate this Saint of Mercy. Fr. Bob

You are invited to a retreat specifically for 6th through 10th Grade Catechists on Wednesday, September 7, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. This retreat is in addition to our regular catechist training scheduled for September 11 (6th to 8th Grade) or September 21 (Confirmation), a time when we go over calendars, curriculum and logistics. If you have a conflict, let Emily know and perhaps we can help.

Catechetical/Faith Formation Volunteer Weekend Calling all Children’s Liturgy Leaders, Catechists, Confirmation and Middle School Leaders, Hall Monitors, Workroom Leaders, Faith Formation Child Care and office volunteers to our Catechetical Weekend September 17 and 18. This is our chance to recognize you and pray for you before we have our Kick Off on September 21. At each of the three Masses, Fr. Bob will call you up after Communion to introduce you to the parish (as a group) and bless you. We will be joining parishes across the nation in recognizing your ministry this weekend! The USCCB website has some excellent information about Catechetical Sunday (Weekend) that you are encouraged to check out. Thank you for serving our parish’s Faith Formation Ministry.

Youth Ministry/Confirmation Needs Got a bus you’d like to donate? How about pool cues, volleyballs, kickballs, or a rubber chicken? Any chance you are getting rid of a 40 inch plus flat screen TV or projector that is gently used? We need three for Confirmation. How about superhero costumes, fun wigs, or adult dress up items? We need new or gently used items for Confirmation and Youth Ministry events. If you have something you think we could use, shoot Ann or Tanya an email and we’ll check to ensure we have a spot. We weren’t kidding about that bus!

Back to School Supplies If you have been shopping lately whether it’s Kohls, Target, Walgreens, Walmart or wherever, you no doubt have noticed the racks of back-to-school supplies. They’re hard to miss. Your Faith Formation Team has a request for those of you who are shopping for your children. Would you please consider purchasing an extra pack of markers, crayons, pencils or glue sticks for our ministry? If you are past those days of buying school supplies, but miss the excitement of the back-to-school season, maybe you would like to take a trip down memory lane and purchase a few supplies for our Ministry. If you don’t fit into those two categories, anyone can enjoy that feeling of purchasing new crayons. We would greatly appreciate any back-to-school supplies from papers to scissors, folders to markers (and anywhere in between). Please drop off donations at the parish office. Thank you for thinking of us!

All you need is a love of our faith and a desire to share it with others! We will help you with everything else you need. Besides catechist we need a welcoming committee, decorators, brownie bakers and middle school leaders. Yes, we still need our catechists as well, let us help you answer the call to serve others in your parish. We look forward to you joining us! Please contact us with any questions or to volunteer.
