Seeking Volunteers for Washing of the Feet Ceremony

If you would like to volunteer to be

part of a profound, humbling and

meaningful experience by participat-

ing in the washing of the feet ceremo-

ny, please contact our Parish office at

650-588-1455 by Monday, March 25,

2013. Instruction will be provided.

Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound

to abstain from meat the Fridays of Lent and

Good Friday.

Everyone 18 years of age and older but under

the age of 60 is also bound to fast on Good

Friday.

On Good Friday the law of fast allows only one full meal a day,

but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as

this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids dur-

ing the day is permitted.

Thank you for your sacrificial offering in supporting St. Veronica.

Due to holiday printing schedules, our collection numbers for last week

will be reflected in a future bulletin. Thank you for your continued support.

In observance of Good Friday and the

Easter weekend, the Pastoral Center

offices will close at noon on Friday,

March 29 and will be closed on

Monday, April 1.

St. Veronica Book Club Meeting

The next book club meeting is at 7:00 p.m. on

Monday, April 1, 2013 in the Pastoral Center

Building.

perience and Tradition” by Richard Rohr & Joseph Martos.

Welcome Newly Registered Parishioners!

Our parish continues to be blessed and enriched by the

presence of new parishioners:

Steven & Janet Tarantino

Our parish welcomes you with open hearts and open arms.

We thank God you have chosen to join our community.

Parish Lenten Almsgiving

Once again during the Lenten Season as part of

our parish almsgiving, we are conducting a non-

perishable food drive supporting the needy in our

St. Vincent de Paul conference. Next time you are grocery

shopping, pick up an extra item or two and share with those

less fortunate. Please place your items in the bin in the church

vestibule or drop them off at the Pastoral Center.

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

On a piece of paper found on a dead child in the

Ravensbruck Concentration Camp was this

prayer: “O Lord, remember not only the men

and women of good will, but also those of ill

will. But do not remember all the suffering they

have inflicted on us; remember the fruits we

have borne, thanks to this suffering---our com-

radeship, our loyalty, our humility, our courage,

our generosity, the greatness of heart---which

have grown out of all this. And when they come

to judgment, let all the fruits that we have borne

be their forgiveness.”

This Christ-like prayer captures the sentiment

and spirituality of the Palm Sunday, as Jesus

makes his “triumphal” entry into Jerusalem. His

entry, however, will spell disaster for him. He

will be opposed, betrayed, humiliated, aban-

doned, disillusioned, and killed. But there

would be another triumphal entry: Jesus would

enter glorious and everlasting life---on account

of which we would all make our own triumphal

entry into new life, now and in the life to come.

As we begin the Holy Week, we enter the

shrine of suffering. We could use other expres-

sions like pain, sorrow, sadness, rejection, dis-

ease, war, death, exploitation, violence, dimin-

ishment, evil, heartbreak. Suffering is so preva-

lent and varied that we might use hundreds of

expressions and still not cover all its various

manifestations.

As we meditate on Luke’s narrative of Jesus’

passion, we walk with Jesus, glance at his dis-

appointed face, look into his sad eyes, feel his

feelings of rejection, hurt, and fear, and think

his thoughts of courage and determination both

to fulfill his Father’s desire and to bring new

life to the world. The suffering servant in the

reading from Isaiah captures Jesus who will

bear suffering without resistance or retaliation.

In the Christian worldview, our suffering can-

not be separated from that of Jesus; our suffer-

ing is not meaningless; it draws us intensely

close to Jesus because he has undergone ulti-

mate suffering and sacrifice. In his suffering, he

comforts and upholds us in all our sorrow and

pain.

Jesus’ suffering and death are not to take away

our suffering but to give us a vision and a way

through suffering so that we can find new life.

He has shown us the way. When we align our

suffering with that of Jesus, we realize that our

suffering has a positive value; it is redemptive;

it bears the seeds of new life. The sunshine of

the resurrection pierces the darkness of the

cross.

Much suffering has to be fought and eliminated,

but there are forms of suffering that have to be

accepted and borne in a redemptive way. It is

Jesus’ way. Through suffering much love can

be expressed and generated. Those who are ca-

pable of great love are the ones who are able to

suffer in a life-giving way. Those who bear

suffering well are those who are truly capable

of much love.

On the cross, suffering and love meet. We are

in good company with a God in Jesus who suf-

fers, a God who has a wound in His heart. Why

do people have to suffer? Why do we face evil

in the world? The best answer is given by pos-

ing another question: Why did Jesus have to

suffer and die on the cross?

The Holy Week can sensitize us to the suffering

of the world. Jesus’ suffering will inspire us to

strive to eliminate the world’s suffering through

our deeds of compassion. When we see suffer-

ing that goes beyond people’s control, we need

to walk with them like Jesus in love and ser-

vice.

Your Friend and Pastor,

Father Charles Puthota

lished in Catholic San Francisco on March 22, 2013)

Parish Office.

IMPORTANT UPDATE

The vision is becoming reality. Because of the gen-erous donations and pledges thus far, Phase One looks to be on track. Lighting and phasing plans are being reviewed. Once all plans are approved and finalized by the Archdiocese they can start the bid-ding process.

Based upon our meetings with various parish and school organizations, the Archdiocese, the Archi-tects and our logistics/construction team, we have decided to shift Phase One to include the following:

•the front of the church •the area between the church and Parish Center

•the removal of trees in the area north of the Pastoral Center

•the pavement north of the church and Pastoral Center

All of us are in agreement these areas need to be ad-dressed sooner vs. later from a safety and liability standpoint. The Legacy Courtyard will become part of Phase Two which will allow everyone more time to purchase the highly popular bricks. As soon as we have updated information on the Phase One revision we will let you know.

Thank you to all that have donated, without your gen-erous gift giving the progress thus far would not have been possible. For those of you still waiting to donate, we need your help! You can make a onetime donation or you can pledge to make payments over several months. Remember, the more donations and pledges we collect, the greater amount of ground we will be able to put new pavement on in Phase One

We have reached 36% of our goal!!! $211,295.00

Thank you to the 366 participants who have donated thus far to the Capital Campaign, we are grateful for your support.
