For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother." (Mk 3). The Greek words used here for ‘brothers and sisters’ denote also cousins in the context. So the words ‘brothers and sisters’ do not mean that Jesus had brothers and sisters of his own. Jesus took that occasion to teach them a lesson and declared: “These are my brothers. Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me.” Does he undermine natural kinship and the duty and privileges connected with it? No, Jesus wanted to subordinate it to God’s plan, to the spiritual brotherhood which makes us members of God’s family. We are truly children of God because we hear the Word of God and do his will. Our belonging to God, our sonship consist only in our response to God’s will (Jn. 8: 39-47). We make up but one family of God’s children by our acceptance of God’s will and its implementation. We belong to the family of God’s children, and as such, we have to look towards God’s Kingdom. Unlike the animals we have the capacity to ‘stand up’, to reflect, to pray and make our life God-oriented. One day Pope John XXIII was talking with a beggar. The officers of the Vatican got irritated and said: “Your holiness, this man is a stranger and a beggar; it is below your dignity to associate yourself with him.” “Stranger?” (Continued on page 4)

Family of the Children of God In this weekend’s Gospel Jesus says, “"Who are my

mother and my brothers?" And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother." (Mk 3).

Stewardship Thoughts Today’s Scripture passages speak

of darkness in the world. In the Book of Genesis, Adam and Eve fall from grace. The devil-serpent tricks them into partaking of the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Life. Their fall is the basis for Catholic teaching on original sin, which stains all of us at birth. In St. Mark’s Gospel, the evangelist retells the reaction of the scribes (lawyers, in Jesus’ day) when they realize that Christ is driving out demons. They boldly state, He is possessed by Beelzebul. Jesus wisely refutes their claim — a divided kingdom cannot last. As faithful stewards, we are aware of the darkness of evil in the world that leads to temptation, yet this evil does not master us. Sin and death result from Adam and Eve’s fall. Still, the Good News of Jesus encourages us: He humbled Himself to live among us; He died for our sins on Good Friday; He rose from the dead on Easter Sunday; He ascended to heaven and sends the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. In other words, evil, sin, and death do not triumph. We have the victory in Christ! To strengthen us to “fight the good fight,” participate regularly in the sacrament of Reconciliation and partake of Holy Communion at Sunday Mass.

Everyday Stewardship I have coached all three of my

children in soccer at some time in their lives. I loved teaching them and their teammates the importance of functioning as one unit. If we were not all moving together toward victory, we would all find ourselves together in defeat. We used to go through one drill I called the "human foosball." We would scrimmage with players in lines like on a foosball table. If you ever got too far behind or too far ahead of those in your line, play would stop and the ball would go to the other team. The goal was to help build an awareness of where your teammates were on the pitch and to teach the lesson that no one player is a team onto themselves. As disciples and stewards, we sometimes find ourselves far behind or maybe even too far ahead. As a consequence, our actions either hinder the ability of the Body of Christ to evangelize and pass on the faith to a new generation or present the Church as an entity that sees itself as judgmental or too holy to be in the world. We are called to community, and in that community, we must be aware of our brothers and sisters in the faith. At times, we need to help them grow in their faith. Other times, we need to slow down and realize that we cannot change the world on our own. We all have unique gifts we are called to share, and we can only bear true witness to the power of the Body of Christ when we are all moving together and making each other strong.

Asked the Pope, “No, he is a brother of mine.” The Pope apparently knew what Jesus meant by “These are my brothers.”

Jesus’ very mission was to do the will of God: “Here I am, I am coming to do your will.” (Heb. 10:7). As his followers we become brothers and sisters of Jesus if we do God’s will, and we have the assurance: “To all who did accept him he gave power to become the Children of God.” (Jn. 1:12). It is in this context alone Jesus’ words become clear and meaningful. Jesus makes us one family of brothers and sisters binding us with the bonds of spiritual ties.

Let us ask ourselves: Do we feel that we belong to God’s family? Do we give Christ the honor as the Lord of our family? Do we have a strong and solid faith so as to accept our fellowmen as our brothers and sisters as God is our common father?

Fr. Henry

Vocation Mythbusters for Parents

(Continued from Six Ways to Discover My Vocation)

Year after year, in surveys of newly ordained priests, over half report that their families initially opposed the idea of priesthood. Undoubtedly, parents want the best for their children. So what about priesthood does not fit parents’ vision of “the good life”? Let’s look at six common myths.

Myth 1 “He’s too young.”

Many parents, when their young son expresses an interest in seminary, will dispense well-meaning advice: “Get some life experience first—and at least a college degree—then think about seminary later.” Mom and dad envision that with a nice girlfriend and a good job, the idea of priesthood will fade away. The problem is, they may be right. That’s why it’s important that when God moves the heart of a young man to explore the priesthood, parents should trust God that the t ime may be right! College seminaries are places of joy, camaraderie, and deep spiritual growth. Even if your son goes to college seminary and eventually discerns he is not called to priesthood, don’t think he’ll have to “make up for lost time.” Thousands of former seminarians look back on their seminary days with great affection and gratitude!

Next week Myth 2—”He’ll be so lonely.”

10th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Have you ever felt

judged by your family? St. John Paul II noted that the family "is the cradle of life and love" (On the Lay Members of Christ's Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus!

In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff opposition from his family. This was likely Jesus' large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is "brother" or "sister." The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus' preaching, and they are not amused. "They set out to seize him, for they said, 'He is out of his mind.'" To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It's a mess by any standards.

The family's perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent i n t e n s i v e s c h o o l i n g a n d apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus' bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family!

Jesus' words to his family can seem controversial. "Who are my mother and my brothers?" Yet Jesus knows what he is about. He has always known he would be about the business of his Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to "do the will of God."

Thank you! Thank you, thank you to the

wonderful helpers who showed up to make our St Val's property look even more beautiful. Annuals and last year bulbs were planted, 1/3 of a humungous pile of mulch was laid. Once again Bushel Mart, on 7 mile road, donated and delivered at no charge 7 + yards of mulch for our use. A generous parishioner paid for an additional 7 yards. So yes, that was a big pile! So please try to patronize Bushel Mart and thank them for their generosity to our school and parish. Also, next time you see the below volunteers, thank them for their hard work and community service to us!! Leo Gjinaj, who is often an alter server, Taylor Snow standing next to her friend: Loreta Gjinaj ,who is also an alter server and a frequent helper with the children at the 12 o’clock mass, Lydia Gjinaj their mother, John Rini, Al l ison Wright and Barbara Cunningham, who are devoted and frequent garden helpers, Wendy Wagner a new parishioner. Missing from photo, Bob MacDonell, Stephen Borowiak, Ada & Mikiah Mahar, friends of the Gjinaj’s, and the 82 year mother of Lydia, who gets the “most pulled weeds” crown!! Dan Benard was the only one who came to do inside the church cleaning. Phil and Colleen Masserang provided additional and very much needed help with the left over humungous mulch pile on Tues, May 30th. Thanks again to everyone for your dedication and devotion to our Parish. May God Bless you abundantly.

Warmest Regards, Eileen MacDonell

Since it looks like it will be another hot summer, we will need volunteers to help us water all the gardens. We already have 4 volunteers who will be taking a portion of the gardens to water as needed throughout the summer. We are looking for 3 more.
