Introduction

The purpose of this booklet is to indicate to parents and students the range of subjects

available at St Thomas of Canterbury College. This booklet contains information to

help you to select your course. Your subject choice sheet has the option lines and this

booklet has all material in alphabetical order for you to read what the subject offers.

Note that once you have reached a year level you may select other subjects at other

levels. For example, if you are a year 12 student you may combine a mixture of Year

11 and 12 subjects. In all cases the prerequisites must be met.

It should be mentioned that selecting a course of study offered in this course

booklet is not a guarantee that you will get your selection. Every effort is made to

ensure that as many students as possible are able to study the subjects that they

want. Subjects that do not attract a sufficient number of students, however, will

not run.

COURSE COUNSELLING

All students will be offered advice by the Careers Advisor and Deans, to ensure that a

sensible and realistic course of study is planned. Parents will be involved in this

decision and they must approve the proposed course.

If you need help with your choice of subjects, please ask:

The Counsellor and Careers Advisor - Mr Brian Knopp / Mr Marty Taylor

Your present subject teachers and Mentoring Teacher

Your Deans

Parents are invited to ring the College (348-7010) if they wish to discuss your subject

choices with Mr Knopp, or your Deans.

Your Career and Subject Choice

In choosing a Year 11 - 13 course you are partly bound by what you have taken in the

previous year. Beyond that you should make sure that your choice of subjects allows

for future flexibility and is relevant to your possible career needs. It is wise for students

to think in terms of several possible career areas.

Here are a few simple principles by which you can avoid career limitation.

1. At any stage do not choose subjects because of the amount of work they may be,

or may not be, to you. Look beyond the work aspect and more towards the future

doors this subject will open to you.

2. Once subjects have been dropped they can only be picked up in later years at the

Year 11 level. If you now know that you need a subject for your future and you

didn’t take it at year 11 you need to have a conversation with the HOD of that

subject to see if you can bypass the year 11 course.

3. If you are in Year 12, plan your Year 13 course as well so that your choice of

Year 12 subjects gives you a viable course in Year 13, and with a view to future

career choice.

4. If you are to be in Year 13, check carefully the Subjects List and match subjects

with your future desired qualifications and careers.

5. If you are considering a scientific or engineering career, at Year 12 you should

consider taking English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. The fifth subject

could be chosen according to your interests. There are very few Science careers

that require Physics without Chemistry, or Biology without Chemistry.

6. Mathematics - Scientific, commerce and technical occupations require

Mathematics to Year 12 at least.

7. English and other subjects such as History at Year 13 level are a considerable

benefit for university study as it is often assessed through essays and written

assignment work.

8. If you are not interested in a scientific or technical occupation, the choice of

subjects is less critical. However, the inclusion of Mathematics increases the

range of occupations that it may be possible for you.

By using career quest, you will be able to check that your subjects and career choice

match up. You can also do a comprehensive career assessment on the library computers.

Use the website www.careers.govt.nz

If you want further direction, see your Guidance Counsellor, Dean or the Career and

Employment Coordinator, Mr Knopp.

Information for

Year 11 Students

Firstly: What is NCEA? Follow the link below to watch a short clip on 'How NCEA works' and how to understand it. This is also available in Samoan, Te Reo, Tongan via this link. VIDEO LINK: How NCEA works

NCEA stands for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement.

How do students gain an NCEA?The NCEA will be awarded at levels 1, 2 or 3. Each standard is worth a number of credits.

Level 1 NCEA

To gain Level 1 NCEA you must achieve at least 80 credits which includes 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits. The Literacy and Numeracy credits come from specified standards available through a range of subjects.

These credits can come from: - external or internal assessment

An NCEA Level 1 will be issued to learners who have achieved ALL of the following: i 80 credits at level 1 or higher ii 10 credits showing literacy skills iii 10 credits showing numeracy skills

LITERACY REQUIREMENT Minimum of 10 credits through either:

Achievement standards - available through a range of subjects Unit standards - package of three literacy unit standards Literacy is also available through Te Reo and Maori studies

NUMERACY REQUIREMENT Minimum of 10 credits through either:

Achievement standards - available through a range of subjects Unit standards - package of three numeracy unit standards

ACHIEVEMENT OR UNIT STANDARDS Achievement Standards = AS Results = Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit, or Excellence. The grade they achieve is determined by the quality of their work as measured against national standards. Unit Standards = US Results = Not Achieved or Achieved. They gain that standard but there is no differentiation as to ranking or different grades.

Year 12 Students

NCEA Level 2 To gain Level 2 NCEA you must achieve at least 60 credits at Level 2 or above and 20 credits from any level. The NCEA Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy requirement must be met to achieve the Level 2 NCEA qualification. To gain entry into NCEA Level 2 courses, students need to gain NCEA Level 1 passes as specified in the subject information. The work at NCEA Level 2 is more demanding than at Level 1.

Students MUST refer to the entry requirements for Level 2 courses when selecting their subjects.

If you do not achieve at Level 1 in a standard, you have three options:

i Take that subject again at NCEA Level 1. ii Discuss your options with the HOD of that subject iii Choose a different subject.

You could then obtain qualifications at two different levels. Multi-level studies may be the best option for you.

GAINING A LEVEL TWO NCEA

80 credits, a minimum of 60 credits from Level 2 and/or above, using Achievement and/or Unit Standards that are all registered on the NQF.

A student may use up to 20 credits from Level 1 to add to their 60 credits from Level 2 or above to make up to the 80 needed for this Level.

A student can use Level 2 credits for the required 80 credits for Level 1 NCEA.

There is no core requirement for this Level. SUBJECTS

English or ESOL are NOT compulsory subjects but possibly needed if you are heading to University due to the UE literacy requirement.

For the purposes of University Entrance, students should aim to pick up their 5 Level 2 reading credits and 5 Level 2 writing credits at level 2 and 3

Your year 12 son will have SEVEN subject

Year 13 Students

Level 3 NCEA To gain Level 3 NCEA you must achieve at least 60 credits at Level 3 or above and 20 credits from Level 2 or above. The NCEA Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy requirement must be met to achieve the Level 3 NCEA qualification. To gain entry into NCEA Level 3 courses, students need to gain NCEA Level 2 passes as specified in the subject information. Subjects may be selected at a variety of levels according to:

i The student’s results ii The approval of the Head of Learning or subject HOD iii The student’s career needs iv The limitations of the timetable

Multi-level studies may be the best option for you.

A number of students will be encouraged to enter the New Zealand Scholarship examination.

GAINING A LEVEL THREE NCEA

80 credits, a minimum of 60 credits from Level 3 and/or above, using Achievement and/or Unit Standards that are all registered on the NQF.

A student may use up to 20 credits from Level 2 to add to their 60 credits from Level 3 or above to make up to the 80 needed for this Level.

A student can use Level 3 credits for the required 80 credits for Level 1 or 2 NCEA.

There is no core requirement for this Level. NUMBER OF SUBJECTS

A full time course of study is at least FIVE subjects

Note – NCEA Level 2 Literacy credits in English are required for entry to University. University Entrance will also require a set number of Level 3 credits. These credits can be gathered through a variety of possibilities. Students will need to work with College staff making subject choices to ensure entrance requirements are covered.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO CONSIDER

Students should aim for the highest achievement possible in each standard. This is advised because tertiary institutions will rank students on the basis of their best Level 3 credits

Page 9: ST THOMAS’ SENIOR SUBJECT BOOKLET YR 11 / 12 / 13 GUIDE ... · YR 11 / 12 / 13 GUIDE for 2019 . Introduction The purpose of this booklet is to indicate to parents and students the

Careful choice of subjects is essential. It is difficult to make course changes in the NCEA system. The cumulative workload of specific subjects must be given careful consideration in the selection process.

Religious Education is incorporated into every Year 13 student’s programme.

THE UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE

University requirements change constantly as regards entry to courses and training

facilities. It is impossible to list all up-to-date requirements and school subject

recommendations for all courses or areas of study. The best advice that we can give you

is that the individual student checks with the training facility concerned what the entry

requirements are as things can and do change constantly.

The advice is to check out the website of the University of your choice and discuss

options and subjects with staff here at school and at the University.

Scholarships at Universities

There are many types of scholarships available for those starting University, including Entrance Scholarships, Emerging Leaders, Sports and Dux Scholarships and Cultural Scholarships. Money ranges from $5000 to $15,000 for some scholarships. Universities tell us every year that money is left unclaimed or not applied for … such a waste. You can find out more on these scholarships by doing a search or by visiting the Individual University’s department pages.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO DO WELL … FINANCIALLY.

There are many scholarships at every University and MANY are not even applied for. It is in your son’s interest to:

Search out about scholarships at their desired tertiary location

Know when the important dates are…

Listen carefully and ask questions when university advisers visit.

NCEA Endorsements

Recognising high achievement with 'endorsements'

When students perform consistently above the 'Achieved' level, their result(s) can be

'endorsed' to reflect that high achievement. This can occur at either the Certificate or

individual course level.

Certificate Endorsement

If a student gains 50 credits at Excellence, their NCEA will be endorsed with

Excellence. Likewise, if a student gains 50 credits at Merit (or Merit and Excellence),

their NCEA will be endorsed with Merit. Their Record of Achievement shows

endorsement awards.

Credits earned can count towards an endorsement over more than one year and more

than one level. However, they must be gained at the level of the certificate or above.

For example, Level 2 credits will count towards endorsement of a Level 1 NCEA, but

Level 1 credits will not count towards endorsement of a Level 2 NCEA.

Course Endorsement

Course endorsement provides

recognition for a student who has

performed exceptionally well in an

individual course.

Students will gain an endorsement

for a course if, in a single school

year, they achieve:

14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and

at least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from

internally assessed standards. Note, this does not apply to Physical Education,

Religious Studies and level 3 Visual Arts.

A course endorsement is not a qualification.

A course endorsement can be awarded even if a qualification for that level is not

achieved. For example, a student may achieve a Merit endorsement for their Level 2

Mathematics course regardless of whether they achieve NCEA Level 2

Learn how to monitor your progress towards

Course endorsements

Page 12: ST THOMAS’ SENIOR SUBJECT BOOKLET YR 11 / 12 / 13 GUIDE ... · YR 11 / 12 / 13 GUIDE for 2019 . Introduction The purpose of this booklet is to indicate to parents and students the

Course Endorsement Guide

Course endorsement provides recognition for students who perform exceptionally

well in individual courses.

Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they

achieve:

14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, where

At least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits

from internally assessed standards. Note, this does not apply to Physical

Education, Religious Studies and Level 3 Visual Arts.

A course endorsement can be gained independently of a qualification. For example, a

student may gain a Merit endorsement for their Level 2 Mathematics course without

achieving the NCEA Level 2 qualification.

How is a course endorsement calculated?

1. A course will be endorsed with Excellence when the student achieves 14 or

more credits with Excellence in the course.

2. A course will be endorsed with Merit when a student achieves 14 or more

credits with Merit or Excellence in the course.

3. These 14 or more credits must include a minimum of 3 internally assessed

credits and 3 externally assessed credits.

Exempted from this rule are courses that include 14 or more credits in

Physical Education or Religious Studies or Level 3 Visual Arts. A course will

be endorsed:

1. if 14 or more credits are achieved with Merit or Excellence from

internally assessed Physical Education or Religious Studies standards

2. if 14 credits are achieved with Merit or Excellence from one of the

externally assessed Level 3 Visual Arts standards or 14 or more credits

are achieved with Merit or Excellence from internally assessed Level 3

Visual Arts standards.

4. The course must be completed within one school year.

5. All exclusions will apply. Where two or more standards assess the same

learning outcome they are mutually exclusive for all NCEA qualifications and

endorsements.

6. A course endorsement is gained at the level of the lowest-level standard

making up the eligible credits.

7. Courses may include unit standards, but only unit standards with Merit and/or

Excellence criteria will contribute to an endorsement.

8. The result for any standard can be used in only one course endorsement in the

year it is reported.

9. Course endorsement does not include Scholarship.

12CHE - CHEMISTRY LEVEL 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Chemistry is about understanding the properties of different substances and how these substances can change. Chemistry allows us to predict how substances may alter when the surrounding conditions change, or how they may react to form new substances, and to explain why this happen. Chemistry is the science which investigates matter and how it reacts under various conditions. In Chemistry we perform experiments, make careful observations and draw conclusions about substances in the world around us. The course contains much practical work. Internal

COST: Workbook approx. $30 Optional but recommended. Education perfect ($30) ENQUIRIES TO: Mr J Riddell WHY THIS COURSE? Chemistry is the most central of the sciences. All natural processes are chemical - consider photosynthesis or the functioning of the body - while synthetic chemistry gives us detergents, ceramics, paints, paper, steel and thousands of other products. It is not surprising that chemistry is an important subject both in its own right and also as a component for qualifications in other fields.

13CHE - CHEMISTRY LEVEL 3 THIS IS AN APPROVED UE SUBJECT

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Level 3 Chemistry builds on the concepts introduced at Level 2 and prepares students for tertiary study in this or related disciplines. There is a considerable amount of experimental work undertaken.
