Our reading from the book of Job gives us part of God’s climactic speech. God underscores for Job the immensity of divine power and the unknowability of the Lord’s ways. In particular, this passage focuses on God’s power over the chaotic forces of the sea, which anyone who has seen the devastation of a hurricane upon a coastal area knows well. As powerful as the sea is, God is more powerful and commands it to be still. The power of water and the even greater power of God are featured in our Gospel reading from Mark as well, only this time it is Jesus who commands the waters to be still. This display of divine power on the part of Jesus awakens a sense of wonder in Jesus’ disciples, causing them to ask who this is “whom even the wind and the seas obey.” The book of Job makes it clear that this power belongs to God alone, but in Mark’s Gospel it is only after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus that the disciples will begin to understand. But even though the disciples do not understand, in the words and actions of Jesus the new creation of which Paul speaks is beginning to be revealed: old things are passing away and new things are coming. God’s power is present in the world in a new and surprising way. Mark tells the story of Jesus’ divine power not simply to impress upon us who Jesus is, but also to give us confidence that no matter what trouble besets us, no matter the storm we find ourselves in, those who are disciples of Jesus can have confidence in his power to rescue us.

Beyond Cornerstone

The Beyond Cornerstone Service has been asked to sponsor an afternoon of summer camp for children ages 5-12, at St. Augustine’s Parish in

Newark. Our visit is: Friday, July 24 - 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.

We expect 50-70 campers.

To make our visit a success and give the children a little summer fun, we are asking for help with our wish list: bubbles, jump ropes, balls, coloring books/crayons, hula hoops or any age appropriate games. Arrangements will be made to pick up any donated items.

We are looking for volunteers for face painting and a musician to lead the children in a sing-a-long.*

We will be preparing a meal for the campers, but an ice cream truck would make the day complete. If anyone can help make that happen, please let us know.

Monetary donations are most welcome. Checks should be made payable to St. Thomas the Apostle and dropped off at the Parish Center or in the collection basket. Please mark your envelope “Beyond Cornerstone Service”.

To volunteer or donate, please contact: Marianne Sommerkamp: 973-768-6720 Joyce Cupoli: 973-785-1840 Alicia von Schaumburg: 973-752-2059

*Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older.

Thank You!

? Food Pantry

There is a Food Pantry at St. Thomas, established to serve the needs of parishioners and others in need. The goal of the program is to provide sustenance to individuals and families who, for many reasons, do not have enough to eat. If you are in this situation simply contact the Parish Center and we'll do our best to assist you. If you know of a parishioner that you feel may have this need, please make them aware of the program and have them contact us. Food Collection Sunday is usually the third Sunday of each month, when our parishioners generously drop off Grocery store gift cards in the collection basket in an envelope marked "food pantry" and leave food at the church doors for those in need.

PARISH INFORMATION

Did you know FOR ST. THOMAS PARISH

Registration

If you are presently not on our mailing list, receiving envelopes and the various parish mailings, the chances are that you are not a registered member of our parish. You are not automatically a registered member because you were married here or even if you were brought up here and lived in the parish with your parents–or went to school here. Membership is by formal registration only. Just call the Parish Center at (973) 338-9190 and let us know that you wish to register and the registration form will be mailed to you. Thank you.

How Do I Arrange a Wedding?

Archdiocesan policy requires that arrangements be made with a Parish Priest at least one year before the wedding date. Arrangements can be made by calling the Parish Center, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. You should be a registered parishioner of St. Thomas in order to be married here.

"Time of Marriage" Well in advance of making other arrangements for your wedding, the time of your marriage should be arranged with one of the Parish Priests.

‘Directives’ You should consult one of the parish priests concerning the current Church law when a Catholic is marrying a person of another faith. All procedures for Marriage Preparation must still be followed,

In preparation for Marriage here at Saint Thomas, you would ask you to be willing to follow the norms set by Canon (Church) Law, Archdiocesan and Parish Policy.

Baptisms

We remind you to contact the parish at least three months prior to the Baptism of your child.

We have scheduled various dates for Baptisms during the year. These schedules are published in the Bulletin and are available at the Parish Center.

Baptism is a community celebration. Individual Baptisms are normally performed only in case of necessity.
