Most Holy Trinity

Today’s solemnity (as well as the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Lord celebrated next Sunday) is sometimes considered an “idea feast” or “feast of devotion” (see Adolph Adam, The Liturgical Year; LP, 1990, pp. 25, 174). Remember that the word feast is used here to simply indicate a joyful observance on the Church’s calendar. The word is often used indiscriminately to describe any festal day. It is not meant here to designate the rank of the day (i.e., solemnity, feast, or memorial). The terms idea feast, feast of devotion, or theological feast are used among scholars in reference to some of the solemnities of the Lord during Ordinary Time, including today’s observance of the Most Holy Trinity. These days on the calendar do not commemorate a person or an event in the life of either the Lord or his saints. Rather, they commemorate a theological tenet of the faith or a doctrine/dogmatic belief (e.g., today’s solemnity–the doctrine of the Triune God; one God in three divine persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) or a particular devotion (e.g., the Sacred Heart of Jesus or the Immaculate Heart of Mary). As a result, many of these “feasts” gained popularity and celebration in the Middle Ages, beginning as private devotions that gradually received recognition on the universal liturgical calendar. Today’s solemnity, for example, was declared a universal observance by Pope John XXII in 1334.

From the Pastor’s Desk…

Welcome Father Mark!

It is my happy task to inform you that our Archbishop has appointed Father Mark Wysocki to serve here at St. Thomas the Apostle. Father Mark was ordained in 1985 and has served at several parishes throughout the Archdiocese, with the last being Sacred Heart Church in Lyndhurst. We welcome Father Mark to our parish family!

Deacon Dennis Retires

We have recently received a letter from Archbishop Myers accepting the retirement of our Deacon Dennis Besida. We will have an opportunity to personally thank Dennis for his many years of ministry in our parish when we celebrate St. Thomas the Apostle Day here in our parish with a Reception in Herron Hall on July 2nd following the 5 PM Mass. Although now retired, Dennis will continue to be involved in our parish as his personal schedule allows.

Congratulations Bob Miller

On behalf of all of us I want to congratulate Bob Miller on his new position on the faculty of Don Bosco Prep. We are sure the students there will benefit from his knowledge and personal example. Bob will continue in his role as Pastoral Associate for Family and Adult Formation including his coordination of the R.C.I.A. process in our parish.

Saint Thomas the Apostle Day

July 3rd is the yearly celebration of St. Thomas the Apostle. What’s unusual this year is that it falls on a Sunday. This gives us a special opportunity to celebrate Saint Thomas, the patron of our community. All Masses on this day will be celebrated as a Solemnity in honor of St. Thomas the Apostle. There will be a special celebration at the Saturday 5:00pm Mass with a reception in Herron Hall to follow, where you can congratulate Deacon Dennis and also meet our new deacon Brian Murphy and our new priest Father Mark Wysocki. So mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Quotes from the General Instruction

of the Roman Missal June 19, 2011 - Part 6 of 7

On November 27, 2011, the English speaking Church in the USA will begin using a new translation of the prayers used at Mass (The Roman Missal). A series of quotes explaining the parts of the Mass from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) will be posted here. These explanations are meant to help the reader participate more fully in the Sunday Mass. Please check here weekly.

The Eucharistic Prayer Now the center and summit of the entire celebration begins: namely, the Eucharistic Prayer, that is, the prayer of thanksgiving and sanctification. The priest invites the people to lift up their hearts to the Lord in prayer and thanksgiving; he unites the congregation with himself in the prayer that he addresses in the name of the entire community to God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, the meaning of the Prayer is that the entire congregation of the faithful should join itself with Christ in confessing the great deeds of God and in the offering of Sacrifice. The Eucharistic Prayer demands that all listen to it with reverence and in silence. (GIRM, 78)

Communion It is most desirable that the faithful, just as the priest himself is bound to do, receive the Lord’s Body from hosts consecrated at the same Mass and that, in the instances when it is permitted, they partake of the chalice, so that even by means of the signs Communion will stand out more clearly as a participation in the sacrifice actually being celebrated. (GIRM, 85)

PLANNED GIVING

Here are some other ways You can help St. Thomas the Apostle Church continue its mission of serving God’s people. Give a gift of cash or check for general use or a specific purpose. Give a gift of stocks or bonds. There could be a significant tax advantage to you if there has been appreciation in their value and they are transferred to St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

A bequest in your will assures that your possessions are distributed as you desire. When making a bequest, use the full legal name and address: Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, 60 Byrd Avenue, Bloomfield, NJ 07003

Make St. Thomas the Apostle Church partial or primary beneficiary of a life insurance policy that is no longer needed for family security. Ask the insurance company for the forms necessary to change the beneficiary or to transfer the ownership to St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

"Going Fishing - save the date Wednesday, August 3, at 7:00am"

To Saint Thomas the Apostle Parishioners,

The St. Thomas community suffered a tremendous loss in December, 2010 with the passing of Ryan James Joseph at the young age of twenty-four. Ryan was a member of the STA School graduating class of 2000. The Joseph family has been active in the St. Thomas school and parish for more than twenty years.

An annual scholarship has been established in Ryan’s memory. This $500 scholarship will be awarded annually to a current student at St. Thomas the Apostle School. Courage, kindness and generosity are just a few of the qualities that made Ryan a special person and friend to all who knew him. The recipient should possess the qualities demonstrated by Ryan. The $500 would be applied toward the student’s tuition at St. Thomas for the following school year. This year’s winner- which was announced at the St. Thomas golf outing on June 6th- is Nicole Miller, a 5th grade student at STA.

If you would like to contribute to the “Friends of Ryan Joseph Scholarship Fund” for future years, please send donations to:

Friends of Ryan Joseph Scholarship fund Attention: Joanne Sheehan/Donna Elsby

St. Thomas the Apostle School 50 Byrd Ave. Bloomfield, NJ 07003

Please make checks payable to St. Thomas the Apostle School and write “Friends of Ryan Joseph” in the memo. Donations will be managed by the STA finance committee and Ms. Ferrar, STA principal. A receipt of acknowledgment will be sent to all donors.

Any amount (big or small) would be greatly appreciated. We hope that everyone can find a way to make a small contribution that will not only financially help a student continue his or her education at STA, but will help to continue Ryan’s legacy of courage and generosity.

Please continue to pray for the entire Joseph family following this difficult loss.
