Much of the Pentateuch is concerned with regulations that foster the life of the community and its relationship with God. In today’s first reading, the Ten Commandments are apodictic laws, that is, absolute prohibitions. The first four concern responsibilities toward God, while the last six regulate community life. From a historical perspective, the Ten Commandments give insight into emerging monotheism. The first commandment calls for monolatry, the exclusive worship of God that acknowledges the existence of other gods. For a first-century Jew like Paul, the world consisted of Jews and non-Jews or Gentiles. In the second reading, Paul purposely sets up a dichotomy: Jews want visible proof and Greeks prefer philosophical thinking. into this either/or world, Paul introduces a third possibility as a follower of Christ. This third way is incomprehensible to both Jews and Gentiles, who remain wedded to their own perspectives. And in fact, Jew and Gentile will view Christ as a stumbling block and foolishness, but to those called, Christ is both the power of God and the wisdom of God. All four canonical Gospels include the story of Jesus’ cleansing of the temple. But only John places the incident at the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. In John’s account, we learn that the temple was still under construction, a building project that had lasted forty-six years. As Paul had warned in First Corinthians, the Jews begin to believe in Jesus because of the signs Jesus was doing. Jesus recognizes that their belief in the signs will not lead them to deeper faith, so he “would not trust himself to them.” Only in hindsight do the disciples understand that Jesus’ prediction of the destruction and resurrection of the temple referred to his body.

2015 LENTEN REGULATIONS
1. The days of Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday continues until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.
2. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.
3. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.
4. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence "substantially", or as a whole, is a serious obligation.
5. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.
6. Time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 22nd to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 31st. *Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.
Extract from Pope Francis's 2015 Lenten Message: “As individuals … we have are tempted by indifference. Flooded with news reports and troubling images of human suffering, we often feel our complete inability to help. What can we do to avoid being caught up in this spiral of distress and powerlessness? First, we can pray in communion with the Church on earth and in heaven. Let us not underestimate the power of so many voices united in prayer! The 24 Hours for the Lord initiative, which I hope will be observed on 13-14 March throughout the Church, also at the diocesan level, is meant to be a sign of this need for prayer. Second, we can help by acts of charity, reaching out to both those near and far through the Church’s many charitable organizations. ... . Third, the suffering of others is a call to conversion, since their need reminds me of the uncertainty of my own life and my dependence on God and my brothers and sisters. If we humbly implore God’s grace and accept our own limitations, we will trust in the infinite possibilities which God’s love holds out to us.” Visit stachurchbloomfield.com for a link to the full text.

2016 MASS BOOK OPENING
Tues., March 24th from 9:30am -1pm in the parish center.
Masses from January through December of 2015 will be scheduled. We will be taking intentions for 7:30 and 11:30 a.m.
daily masses and weekend Masses. We ask that you please limit the number of Masses you reserve. For this reason we are limiting Mass reservations on opening day to a maximum of two weekend Masses or four weekday Masses. For example, one can reserve four weekday Masses or two weekday and two weekend Masses. Perhaps a birthday or anniversary might be an initial date–thus giving all Parishioners the opportunity to reserve the dates and times they may wish. Another way to remember your deceased loved ones would be to make donations to our Memorial Fund. The Memorial Fund allows us to purchase needed Vestments, Altar Linens, Vessels, etc. to be used at the celebration of Mass. Also available are Sanctuary Offerings which include the Sanctuary Candles in Church, the Rectory and the Convent. They burn weekly in memory of your loved ones as well as for special intentions: birthdays, anniversaries, improved health, etc. Cards are available announcing your donation to both the Memorial Fund and the Sanctuary Candles.
The September Club invites all seniors (55+) to join us for fun & fellowship. In addition to regular meetings, we sponsor special events and trips.
