Coronavirus Prayer . . . Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders. Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth. Whether we are at home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Jesus Christ, heal us.

Oración de Coronavirus . . Jesucristo, tú atrevesaste pueblos y villas “curando toda dolencia y toda enfermedad.”

The Fire of Your Love: The Four Marks of The Church

By Will Oliver

Every Catholic knows what the Four Marks of The Church are even if they may not know them as the “Four Marks.” Every Sunday, however, when we recite the Nicene Creed, we say the Four Marks aloud: “We believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.” The Four Marks of The Church are: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Found throughout the Bible, the one epistle that addresses all four of them in one letter is Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. While it is true that the epistles of Saint Paul can sometimes prove a difficult read, for they can be overly complicated in their delivery as evidenced by the many clause sentences, when he wrote his letter to the Ephesians, he dispensed with the overly complicated narrative and employed simple language. The letter gives an overview of salvation to the people of Ephesus, an ancient city in Greece, by presenting it before Paul’s time, during his time, and in the future—in our time. In that letter, Paul touches on the Four Marks of The Church The Church is One for as Paul writes there is “One Lord, one faith, one baptism” (Ephesians 4:5). The Church is one because there is only one source for her: the Blessed Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Church is also one because of her one founder, Jesus Christ. Moreover, she is one because she has one soul, the Holy Spirit. And, finally, she is one because she is unified in her faith, in her worship, and her leadership (CCC #813). The Church is Holy for when Paul explain that husbands should love their wives as Jesus Christ loved the Church, it was so “she might be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27) like The Church herself. The Church is holy because Jesus Christ died for our sins, and so he has separated The Church from sin and then consecrated The Church to the Father. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “The Church . . . is held, as a matter of faith, to be unfailingly holy. This is because Christ, the Son of God, who with the Father and the Spirit is hailed as 'alone holy,' loved the Church as his Bride, giving himself up for her so as to sanctify her; he joined her to himself as his body and endowed her with the gift of the Holy Spirit for the glory of God” (CCC #823). The Church is Catholic for as Paul writes to the Ephesians, “You are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19). He said this because the word “catholic” means universal, so we are The universal Church. The Church is catholic because she bears the fullness of grace and she embraces all nations, all cultures, all people. The Catechism explains there are two distinct reasons why The Church is catholic: “First, the Church is catholic because Christ is present in her for where there is Christ Jesus, there is the Catholic Church” and “Secondly, the Church is catholic because she has been sent out by Christ on a mission to the whole of the human race” (CCC #830-831). The Church is Apostolic for as Paul writes, The Church was “Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets” (Ephesians 2:20). The Church is apostolic because she was founded by the apostles, Christ’s handpicked leaders, who preserved the Church’s apostolic doctrine through both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. The Church is also apostolic because The Church perpetuates a direct line of apostolic succession stretching back to Jesus Christ when he appointed Peter as the first pope (See CCC #857)—“You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). These are the four marks of The Catholic Church, and while some churches may carry some of the Marks, only The Catholic Church can lay claim to bearing all four.

DA GLORIA A DIOS . . . CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION

Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first step restricts access to the church during liturgical services. Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be locked from the inside with the exception of the double doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass will only be able to enter the church through the 16th Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church through any of the locked doors as well as the doors fac-ing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the church building to remind parishioners of the locked doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize any problematic incidents.
