SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER / SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY

APRIL 12, 2015

Once again, Happy Easter! We can continue to use that greeting because the Easter Season, as I noted last week, lasts for 50 days; it concludes this year on Sunday, May 24

th – the Solemnity of Pentecost. And, even

though Lent has finished, we don’t forget our theme of the Sacraments, “the treasures of our faith.” We’ll have many reminders during this Season. In fact, by the time you read this, 86 children will have been confirmed at the Villanova Church on Saturday, April 11

th by the Most Reverend Michael J. Fitzgerald, Auxiliary Bishop of

Philadelphia. Congratulations to our boys & girls, their sponsors, and families! Thank you to their catechists! In addition, several RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) candidates will be brought into full communion in the Catholic Church at the 10:30am Mass, next Sunday, April 19

th in the Villanova Church. And, at

all the Masses, we will have a witness talk from Anne Burns, who was baptized, along with her two sons Joseph and Henry, at the Easter Vigil in 2013. She’ll be sharing the meaning of the sacraments in her life and that of her family. Finally, looking ahead, we’ll be celebrating First Holy Communion, with over 50 of our boys and girls, during the month of May at the following weekend liturgies: May 2

nd (5pm, Rosemont); May 3

rd (10:30am, Villanova); May

10th (9am, Rosemont); May 10

th (10:30am, Villanova); and May 17

th (9am, Rosemont).

Flowing from the joyous nature of the Easter Season and the Sacraments, we’ll have other opportunities to come together and celebrate. I’d like to highlight a couple. One is the Annual Guest Speaker Event in the Villanova Church, next Monday, April 20

th, at 7pm in the Villanova Church (as you know by now, rescheduled from

March); be prepared to be inspired & moved by Jim Ziolkowski. And the other is a presentation on “The Catholic Traditions of Brewing Beer,” by Michael E. Hennessy, CSP in the Rosemont Auditorium on Friday, April 24

th at 7pm.

An RSVP is required for this one, so that we can plan for refreshments and snacks. Please see this bulletin for more information on these – and the many other events planned. Certainly, last, but not least, I’d like to thank everyone who assisted with our beautiful Holy Week, Triduum, and Easter liturgies & services! This includes all those involved in serving, music, and preparation of the environment; there’s a lot of behind the scenes work. If you attended at the Villanova Church, you may have noticed that the sound was particularly clear. This is because Villanova University Campus Ministry and the Parish funded an upgrade of the sound system a couple weeks ago. The portion that involved installing new choir mics was from a donation in memory of Deni Zodda, who appreciated our music ministry – as so many of us do. Also, starting this Monday, April 13

th, for about 3 weeks, the Villanova Church’s air circulation units will be

refurbished and all ductwork & registers cleaned. This is part of the Parish and University’s ongoing effort to upgrade the Church’s air conditioning. A Blessed Easter Season! Fr. Joe

Stewardship Thought for the

Week “The community of believers was of one heart and mind and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own.” Acts 4:32 All that we are and all they we have is a gift from God! Think of your family, your friends, your talents and abilities — these are all gifts from God. We aren’t really owners of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has blessed us with.

As you know by now, Villanova began its NCAA Tournament run on Thursday, March 19

th – the same

time we originally had Jim Ziolkowski scheduled to speak. Being a college basketball fan himself and wanting people to enjoy the game – and still hear his story, Jim graciously decided to postpone his talk. We’re grateful that he now plans to be with us on the evening of April 20

th; now all the more reason to come

out and give him a warm welcome! In the meantime, as I’ve recommended before, do yourself a favor and check out Jim’s National Bestseller and NY Times Bestselling Education Book, Walk in Their Shoes: Can One Person Change the World? I couldn’t put it down; a truly riveting and inspiring read! Copies also will be available that evening. Learn more, as well, about Jim and his efforts at the website: www.buildOn.org Fr. Joe

All parishioners welcome!

Saint Rita of Cascia High School Chicago, Illinois

March 24, 2015 Dear Fr. Joe and Friends at St. Thomas of Villanova: Thank you so much for welcoming me to your parish community. As soon as I arrived and was welcomed by your staff, I knew I was at a special place. Your welcome and graciousness to me were beyond compare. Thanks so much to Fr. Joe and the entire parish staff for all the behind the scenes work to make our mission a great success. The Sacraments are truly the treasures of our faith and it was a pleasure to journey through them with you. May we continue to use the Sacraments to help us become closer to Jesus, ourselves and each other. Thanks too for the generous response to the collection for The Raymond and Mildred McCarthy Financial Aid Fund. The collection totaled $12,606.35. This will help many needy students at St. Rita of Cascia High School. I know my parents are smiling down from heaven! May God bless you all and I hope our paths will cross again sometime in the future! Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Thomas R. McCarthy, O.S.A.

RETROUVAILLE WEEKEND TO HELP….. MARRIAGE STRESS

The Retrouvaille Marriage Program offers help for struggling marriages. Tens of thousands of couples have successfully saved their marriages by attending a Retrouvaille weekend and the six post sessions that follow it. Retrouvaille is a French word meaning rediscovery (pronounced re-tro-vi with a long i). This Catholic program offers tools to help couples rediscover a loving married relationship. It consists of a weekend experience combined with follow-up sessions emphasizing communication between a husband and wife. The program is NOT marriage counseling or a sensitivity group. The next Retrouvaille will be held at Malvern Retreat House on April 17-19. Contact: HelpOurMarriage.com or 800-470-2230. All inquiries are confidential.

Archbishop Carroll Theater Society will be performing "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" from April 9 through April 12. Come out and show your support to the many parishioners who are taking part in this terrific show!
