Second Homily Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas, I would like to share with you the following true story. It recently crossed my desk. And I think it says something about our society and about us and about our young adults.

THE SNEEZE They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With their rich maroon gowns flowing and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as

they felt. Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears.

This class would NOT pray during the commencements, not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it. The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guide-

lines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families.

The speeches were nice, but they were routine until the final speech received a standing ovation. A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment,

and then, it happened.

All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED!

The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said,

'GOD BLESS YOU'

And he walked off the stage…

The audience exploded into applause. This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke God's blessing on their future with or without the court's approval.

This is a true story; it happened at the University of Maryland.

Congratulations to our recent Jubilarians! Recently, Dan and Joyce Griffin celebrated forty-five years of Marriage! We are glad we could pray with them thanking God for all the blessings of their married life. And while we are talking about Wedding Anniversaries—are you celebrating your 50th Wedding Anniversary this year? Let me know as we would like to celebrate your special anniversary at one of our Parish Masses. Also, you are invited to gather together with others for the Archdiocesan Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass that will be celebrated on Sunday, September 16 by Cardinal Cupich. The location of the Mass will be announced soon. To register for the Cardinal’s Mass, contact Sheila O’Shea at the Parish Office.

Your Pastor, Rev. Thomas R. Rzepiela P.S. See you at Church!

MASS INTENTION OPENINGS Our 8:00am Mass inten ons have many openings. Although the most common Mass inten on is in memory of someone who has died, a “special inten on” Mass can be offered for many reasons, such as:

• Birthday • Anniversary • Special need (Like illness, surgery, military deployment, etc.)

To have a Mass offered on these occasions can be more appreciated and unique than flowers, money or gi s. If you would like to have a Mass celebrated for someone alive or deceased, just stop in the Parish Office or call 847-358-6999. The suggested offering is $10.00. A card with the date of the Mass can be provided, if you wish.

Growing Our Faith

MOURNING Our culture doesn’t give us easy per-mission to mourn. Its underlying ethos is that we move on quickly from loss and hurt, keep our griefs quiet, remain strong always, and get on with life.

But mourning is something that’s vital to our health, something we owe to ourselves. Without mourning our only choice is to grow hard and bi er in the face of disappointment, rejec on, and loss. And these will always make themselves felt.

We have many things to mourn in life: We are forever losing people and things. Loved ones die, rela onships die, friends move away, a marriage falls apart, a love we want but can’t have obsesses us, a dream ends in disappointment, our children grow away from us, jobs are lost, and so too one day our youth and our health. Beyond these many losses that ask for our grief there’s the need to grieve the simple inadequacy of our lives, the perfect symphony and consumma on that we could never have. Like Jephthah’s daughter, all of us have to mourn our inconsumma on.

How? How do we mourn so that our mourning is not an unhealthy self-indulgence but a process that restores us to health and buoyancy?

There’s no simple formula and the formula is different for everyone. Grieving, like loving, has to respect our unique re cence, what we’re comfortable with and not comfortable with. But some things are the same for all of us.

First, there’s the need to accept and acknowledge both our loss and the pain which with we’re le . Denial of either, loss or pain, is never a friend.

The frustra on and helplessness within which we find ourselves must be accepted, and accepted with the knowledge too that there’s no place to put the pain except, as Rilke says, to give it back to earth itself, to the heaviness of the oceans from which ul mately comes the saltwater which makes up our tears. Our tears connect us s ll to the oceans that spawned us.

Next, mourning is a process that takes me, some mes a lot of me; not

something we can achieve quickly by a simple decision. We cannot simply will our emo ons back to health. They need to heal and healing is an organic process. What’s involved?

In many instances there’s the need to give ourselves permission to be angry, to rage for a me, to allow ourselves to feel the disappointment, loss, unfairness, and anger. Loss can be bi er and that bi erness needs to be accepted with honesty, but also with the courage and discipline to not let it have us lash out at others. And for that to happen, for us not to lay blame and lash out at others, we need help. All pain can be borne if it can be shared and so we need people to listen to us and share our pain without trying to fix it. Pride is our enemy here. We need the humility to entrust others to see our wound.

Finally, not least, we need pa ence, long-suffering, perseverance. Mourning can’t be rushed. The healing of soul, like the healing of body, is an organic process with its own non-nego able metable for unfolding. But this can be a major test of our pa-

ence and hope. We can go through long periods of darkness and grief where nothing seems to be changing, the heaviness and the paralysis remain, and we’re le with the feeling that things will never get be er, that

we will never find lightness of heart again. But grief and mourning call for pa ence, pa ence to stay the course with the heaviness and the helpless-ness. The Book of Lamenta ons tells us that some mes all we can do is put our mouths to the dust and wait. The healing is in the wai ng.

Henri Nouwen was a man very familiar with mourning and loss. An over-sensi ve soul, he some mes suffered depressions and obsessions that le him emo onally paralyzed and seek-ing professional help. On one such occasion, while working through a major depression, he wrote his deeply insigh ul book, The Inner Voice of Love. There he gives this advice: “The great challenge is living your wounds through instead of thinking them through. It is be er to cry than to wor-ry, be er to feel your wounds deeply than to understand them, be er to let them enter into your silence than to talk about them. The choice you face constantly is whether you are taking your hurts to your head or to your heart. In your head you can analyze them, find their causes and conse-quences, and coin words to speak and write about them. But no final healing is likely to come from that source. You need to let your wounds go down into your heart. Then you can live them through and discover that they will not destroy you. Your heart is greater than your wounds.”

We are greater than our wounds. Life is greater than death. God’s goodness is greater than all loss. But mourning our losses is the path to appropria ng those truths. ‘Wołyń 43’ – Walka o Pamięć – Walka o Polskę… + ‘Wołyń 43’ – nie o zemstę, lecz o pamięć, prawdę i honor wołają ofiary… +
