3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT (B) 13TH DECEMBER 2020

1st Reading Isaiah 61:1-2. 10-11

The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up hearts that are broken; to proclaim liberty to captives, freedom to those in prison; to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord.

'I exult for joy in the Lord, my soul rejoices in my God, for he has clothed me in the garments of salvation, he has wrapped me in the cloak of integrity, like a bridegroom wearing his wreath, like a bride adorned in her jewels. 'For as the earth makes fresh things grow, as a garden makes seeds spring up, so will the Lord make both integrity and praise spring up in the sight of the nations.' Thanks be to God.

Resp Psalm Luke 1:46-50. 53-54

R. My soul rejoices in my God.

My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on his servant in her nothingness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. R.

The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. R.

He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant,

remembering his mercy. R.

2nd Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

Be happy at all times; pray constantly; and for all things give thanks to God, because this is what God expects you to do in Christ Jesus.

Never try to suppress the Spirit or treat the gift of prophecy with contempt; think before you do anything - hold on to what is good and avoid every form of evil.

May the God of peace make you perfect and holy; and may you all be kept safe and blameless, spirit, soul and body, for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. God has called you and he will not fail you. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Acclamation Isaiah 61:1 (Luke 4:18)

Alleluia, alleluia! The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he sent me to bring Good News to the poor. Alleluia!

Gospel John 1:6-8. 19-28

A man came, sent by God. His name was John. He came as a witness, as a witness to speak for the light, so that everyone might believe through him. He was not the light, only a witness to speak for the light. This is how John appeared as a witness. When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, 'Who are you?' he not only declared, but he declared quite openly, 'I am not the Christ.' 'Well then,' they asked 'are you Elijah?' 'I am not' he said. 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.' So they said to him, 'Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?' So John said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: a voice that cries in the wilderness: Make a straight way for the Lord.' Now these men had been sent by the Pharisees, and they put this further question to him, 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the prophet?' This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Grant, almighty God, that looking forward in faith to the feast of our Lord’s birth, we may feel all the happiness our Saviour brings and celebrate his coming with unfailing joy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Family Connection We do many things to get ourselves ready for our celebration of Christmas: purchase gifts, prepare Christmas cards, decorate our homes. John's call of repentance in preparation for Jesus reminds us that our repentance is another way in which we can prepare for the Lord's coming and our celebration of Christmas. Parish communities often offer a communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Advent season. Your family might choose to participate in the communal celebration of the sacrament, or you might seek out the sacrament on an individual basis.

Advent Reconciliation, Saturday Afternoons from

4.30 till 5.15pm

Advent Action Ideas • Let the love of God fill your heart and mind today, so that

you radiate the presence of Christ to everyone you meet.

• Today choose one of the eight Beatitudes and find a way of expressing it in favour of someone you know who is facing a particularly challenging situation.

• Take a quiet moment today to offer the Hail Mary in the spirit of the Archangel Gabriel who first brought to Mary the announcement of the choice God had made of her to bring about the wonder of the Incarnation.

• The next time you meet someone who has not recog-nised God’s goodness in his or her life, try to open that person’s eyes to the marvels of God’s love.

• Go out of your way today to live the Great Command-ment in favour of some person you meet or live with.

Dear Parishioners As you entered the church you would have received a copy of the Pastoral Letter from Archbishop Fisher following the recent easing of restrictions on churches as well as some updated

liturgical directives.—Please read this carefully and hand it to someone you know would like to be updated. A

copy of this will also be on our website .

Advent Hints It is helpful to our spiritual life to spend more

than a glancing moment in our reading of

Christmas Cards we are receiving, with their

notes of good wishes both printed and hand-

written. It is good for our souls also to spend

time with the pictures or drawings on those

cards and notes. We look quickly at the signa-

ture. Do that first, as is natural, and then again

after spending time quietly with the card. It

will become a prayer and a preparation for the

Advent Liturgy.

We can pray with what the card is saying in

print as well as in picture. We as well, can

pray with the “who ” is behind the signature.

Christmas Rosters Thank you to all those who have indicated their availability over Christmas.—Completed Rosters will

be ready next weekend.

Fr Manuel is still needing the assistance of around 15 people to help with either door greeting, seat ushers, collector wardens, and willing cleaners. MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK!!

Please advise Fr Manuel or the door greeters, if you can help in any way during the Christmas masses. If you would like training or an explanation to your rostered Job, please call the office this week.

Attention: Acolytes; Readers; and Extra Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Please advise your preferred time on the blank rosters at the rear of the church.

Witness to the light The protagonist of this Sunday's Gospel is a man named John the Baptist, whom God has sent “to testify to the light”, a denomination that his followers identify with his way of being and living. However, he takes it upon himself to tell them that he is not the Messiah, not Elijah, not even the prophet that everyone was waiting for. He has come to smooth, facilitate, prepare the way of the Lord; but it does not have any religious title, nor any hierarchy granted by the authorities of the time. It is just, ‟a voice of one crying out in the wilderness”. But John the Baptist is not only illuminated by the light of his faith, but a living testimony of the hard life in the desert, where the superfluous has no place, where silence and solitude have forged his convictions, where his mind can delve into the essentials and shed the accessory. But these values derived from the

voluntary confrontation with the forces of nature to enrich the spirit, are not only relegated to times past. In the middle of the desert of modern life, we can still meet people who radiate wisdom and dignity, without being infected by the false values that imprison human beings, such as immediacy and relativism. The words of the Baptist: ‟Among you stands one you do not know”, resonate today in our contemporary society. It is paradoxical that a person apparently known to all as Jesus Christ, is for many a distant being, a perfect stranger. In the midst of the darkness of our times we need witnesses of the light. ‟You are the light of the world […] let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven (Mt 5, 13-16)” Agustin Coll

Your Invited!!!

Everybody knows somebody who has been away from the Church or who is lukewarm. Christmas and Easter stir in many hearts a de-sire for a closer relationship with God and so it is important to invite and to have a warm and welcoming environment as we throw the church doors open. Pope Francis calls for evangelism to proclaim the joy of the Gospel.

At the first Christmas, God Himself reached out to the Jews, his chosen people, and beyond to the Gentiles; so we, too, should generously share the grace of this Christmas season. That is what God did, He reached beyond himself and gave the gift of Jesus.

Don’t be bashful about sharing your faith. Very often the people who come [to Christmas Mass], even those who don’t have a lot of reli-gious background, have a very good experi-ence.

Maybe our invitation may help plant a seed? We don’t know, just don’t give up. The need for evangelism is starkly evident . A friend’s invitation has the best chance of drawing someone to church, far exceeding the influence of a mailer, billboard ad or an in-person invi-tation from a stranger, including a pastor.
