CCHURCHHURCH RRENOVATIONSENOVATIONS UUPDATEPDATE Please continue to keep the success of the renovations in your prayers. Our Parish Renovation Prayer can be found each week here in the bulletin. I am extremely grateful for the on-going generosity, encouragement and prayers that have made this mile-stone in the history of St. Thomas More Parish possible. I am greatly impressed by the spirit of collegiality and mutual respect with which everyone has worked together toward achieving our goal of a welcoming, reverent and beautiful church in which to pray, to celebrate the Holy sacrifice of the Mass, and to confer the Church’s other sacraments. In Christ, Fr. Paul

OOURUR PPARISHARISH RRENOVATIONENOVATION PPRAYERRAYER

Heavenly Father, who led the people of Israel with a cloud by day and a flame by night, we ask you to lead us on our own journey of faith as we undertake the renovation of Your house, whose living stones we are; keep us close to You as a community making this transition by deepening our faith, and grant us patience and serenity while worshiping in a tempo-rary space; so that our joy may be complete when we come to that renewal which is Your will for the Church in Darien. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen.

TTHEHE WWORDORD OOFF LLIFEIFE The Gospel today paints a vivid picture of the events of Jesus’ preaching in Galilee. The scene is set in the town of Capernaum where the Lord based His teaching ministry. We know that He has been preaching in the synagogue and healing people and that his miracles have caused quite a stir. The crowds are now press-ing on Him so closely that He cannot even eat.

These are very much the early days – and Mark recounts how the Lord’s relatives were concerned for Him, to the extent of wondering whether He was of sound mind. Think about it: your cousin is a carpenter’s son and suddenly he goes to a new town, gathers a band of followers and you hear reports of him working miracles you have not yourself seen. It is not an unreasonable concern.

Sometimes, however, doing the will of God will put you the wrong side of respectable because it is always easier not to preach the Gospel. This applies to our own time just as much as it did by the shores of Galilee 2000 years ago.

On the assumption that Jesus’s relatives were still in his home town of Nazareth when they heard of his ministry we can begin to understand the explosive nature of his preaching. Nazareth is around 30 miles away from Capernaum on foot – just over a day’s journey – so for them to have been moved to make the journey to Capernaum also tells us something of how much they loved Him.

It’s easy to assume his family went away disappointed, but in fact Scripture does not record whether or not Mary and his relatives were able to see Jesus on this occasion. The enigmatic answer Jesus gives was for the benefit of the crowd (and for us) but we should not conclude that the Lord refused to see his family. We simply do not know.

What we do know is that He used the situation as an opportuni-ty to preach an important truth about intimacy with Him: it is linked with doing God’s will. Of course, this applies pre-eminently to the Blessed Mother: she is the pinnacle of what it means to do the will of God – and doing the will of God means submitting our will to God’s will.

Jesus does not criticize the fact that His family members sought Him, but He does not acquiesce to their concerns about Him either. This might appear frustrating at times but remember, like His relatives, we often only have part of the picture, whereas the Lord’s perspective is eternal. Michael Clark

SSAVEAVE THETHE DDATESATES!!

Farewell to Michael Clark Please plan to stay a few minutes after the Mass you attend on the weekend of June 16-17 to bid farewell and offer good wish-es to our Pastoral Assistant, Michael Clark. Michael will be re-turning home to England on July 2 for a brief visit. Upon his re-turn he will be residing at St. John Fisher Seminary. The Bishop has assigned him to Trinity Catholic High School in the fall.

Rite of Candidacy On Saturday, September 8 at the 4:30PM Mass, Bishop Caggiano will be at St. Thomas More for the Rite of Candidacy for Michael which is a formal step on the way to priestly ordina-tion for the Diocese of Bridgeport.

Summer Book Recommendations The Fool of New York City by Michael D. O’Brien: Set in present day Manhattan, The Fool of New York City is the tale of two souls who are considered to be "fools" and "idiots" in the eyes of most people they encounter. One is a literal giant, the other an amnesiac who believes he is the seventeenth-century Spanish painter Francisco de Goya, hundreds of years old, aging more slowly than the rest of the human race. Billy the Giant briefly suffered from amnesia years ago, and he understands the anguish of those who have lost their identity. He is an apparently simple person, a failed basketball player with an enormous good heart, who takes Francisco under his wing after they meet through a seeming coincidence. Together they undertake the search to discover Francisco's true past. The quest leads them on numerous adventures and into the shrouded realm of hidden memories and the mysterious dimensions of the mind. It is a journey into the ironies and the complexities of human character and destiny.

Will Wilder: The Relic of Perilous Falls by Raymond Ar-royo: Will Wilder didn’t mean to unlock his otherworldly gift. But that is exactly what happens when Will “borrows” a sacred relic believed to protect the town of Perilous Falls for nearly a century. Even though his intentions are good, the impulsive twelve-year-old unwittingly awakens an ancient evil endangering all of Perilous Falls. As boats sink and hideous creatures crawl from the rising waters, it is up to Will to confront a hellish ene-

my and set things right before it is too late. Along with his sweet—if lethal—great-aunt Lucille, the curator of a museum of supernatural artifacts, Will proves that the actions of one twelve-year-old boy can change the world. Fans of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Peter Lerangis’s Seven Wonders series will embrace this epic adventure in a rollicking new series by a New York Times bestselling author.

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis: Lewis is a classic mas-terpiece of religious satire that entertains readers with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below." At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging account of temptation—and triumph over it—ever written.

Awakenings by Claudia Cangilla McAdam: Ronni is a 21st-century American teenager who has lost her faith following the deaths of her brother and father. They died saving the life of someone she does not deem worthy, and she doubts the con-cept of sacrifice. "Nothing's worth dying for," she declares, even Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross.

The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder: This beauti-ful new edition features unpublished notes for the novel and other illuminating documentary material, all of which is included in a new Afterword by Tappan Wilder. "On Friday noon, July the twentieth, 1714, the finest bridge in all Peru broke and precipi-tated five travelers into the gulf below." With this celebrated sentence Thornton Wilder begins "The Bridge of San Luis Rey, one of the towering achievements in American fiction and a nov-el read throughout the world. By chance, a monk witnesses the tragedy. Brother Juniper then embarks on a quest to prove that it was divine intervention rather than chance that led to the deaths of those who perished in the tragedy. His search leads to his own death -- and to the author's timeless.
