CHOICE
“If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we can-not choose our own path. We have certain bounda-ries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries.
In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their mean-ing. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and de-ception that drive our behavior.
Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well.

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS
MESSAGE FROM THE PARRISH OFFICE
The Altar Guild is having their first Valentine’s Bake Sale & Raffle fundraiser this weekend of February 15-16 after all the Masses. We invite you to buy tickets for the gift baskets we have for raffling off, and/or purchase one of the delicious homemade bake sale items. Tickets are just $1/ticket. This fundraiser is in lieu of the White Ele-phant Sale that the Guild has previously had. If you had items that you were saving up to donate to our sale, some suggestions for groups you can donate them to are: St. Vincent de Paul, Napa’s Community Projects store, Goodwill, or the DAV that do curb side pick-ups (Disabled American Vets).
VALENTINE’S BAKE SALE & RAFFLE
St. Thomas is preparing food for the “Table” at the Presbyterian Church every third Thursday of each month. Please consider donating to help provide food for the less fortunate. We need potatoes, car-rots, ham, green beans, and milk. You may call the parish office to sign up for items that you can do-nate. Items may be brought to the office prior to the third Thursday. Thank you!
THE TABLE
Ash Wednesday, February 26th. All Students who regularly attend catechism classes on Wednesdays are required to attend Mass on Ash Wednesday with their families. The English Mass is at 5:30 pm, the Spanish Mass is at 7 pm. Teachers will be in the Hall to sign Mass Attendance cards after the Masses. All students who regularly attend classes on Tues-day will attend classes as usual. Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation. Students who attend classes on Tuesday are not required to attend Mass on Ash Wednesday. It is a great way to start Lent and certainly fine to attend Mass. Thank you.
THE SPIRIT OF THE LITURGY Series on Pope Benedict's The Spirit of the Liturgy. Don't miss the opportunity to learn about the clas-sical work of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI about our highest form of prayer and worship. What does it mean to worship God? How ought we to under-stand the Liturgy? If Jesus came to bring “worship in Spirit and truth”, why do so many Christians worship in a particular place (church), at a particu-lar time (Sundays), following a particular pattern of worship (liturgy and ritual)? Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI answers these and other important questions in his classic work, The Spirit of the Lit-urgy. Explore his answers as theologian & teacher Mark Brumley leads a nine-session course based on The Spirit of the Liturgy. Next classes are the following dates: February 13, 27; March 5, 12, and 19. All sessions begin @ 7:00 P.M. at Kolbe Acade-my-Trinity Prep, 2055 Redwood Rd., Napa. No charge. Donations gratefully accepted.
CCD NEWS
On Monday, February 17 the parish office will be closed in observance of Presidents Day. Thank you.
Many parishioners have expressed that they are not able physically to kneel when they go to confes-sion in our confessionals. What we have done is to remove the kneelers on the side of both confes-sionals that are closest to the front of the church. The kneeler has been replaced with a chair to make it much easier for anyone who is not able to kneel when one goes to confession. That side of the confessional will be face to face, while the other side (closest to the parish hall) of the confession-als remains the same, with a kneeler and anonymous. I hope that will make it easier for anyone to go to confession. Also, this weekend we are doing the Annual Ministry Appeal for the diocese. Our parish has been assessed over 18,000, which are responsible for 95% of that amount. If we do not raise that amount, our parish will be billed for whatever amount we have not raised. If we go over 100% of our goal, the money over will be returned to our parish. May God continue to bless our families and parish of St. Thomas, Fr. Abel

ASH WEDNESDAY

Gracias.

Gospel: Mt 5:20-22a, 27-28, 33-34a, 37
R. Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the
mysteries of the kingdom. R. Alleluia, alleluia.
R. Aleluya, aleluya.
R. Aleluya.
Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, unless your righteous-ness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heav-en. “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is an-gry with brother will be liable to judgment. “You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, every-one who looks at a woman with lust has al-ready committed adultery with her in his heart. “Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Any-thing more is from the evil one.”
