FROM THE DESK OF FR. LUKE... DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PADRE LUKE...

Last Sunday, Saint Peter rightly professes to Jesus he is the Son of the living God; Christ proceeds to give to him author-ity and leadership of the Church. “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18) In contrast, today in the scripture, Jesus now calls Peter an obstacle and Satan. "Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." (Matthew 16:23) This is a message to all of us. No matter where we are in our spiritual life, we have more to understand about God. Saint Peter did not understand that Divine Love contains within it sacrifice; and so, Saint Peter’s objection to Jesus embracing death on the cross is a temptation and an obstacle to the out pouring of God’s mercy. Although Saint Peter professes a con-trary understanding of the Father’s plan, making him an obstacle and a temping agent of Satan, Jesus corrects him and directs him to be a leader of the Church and to never try to lead God. That message is also for you and I. Often we have a preconception of what we want and think God ought to provide for us; however, Christ already has provided more than what we deserve through His sacrifice on the cross. The problem is in us who do not rec-ognize what is best but rather seek that which is less. Ask yourself; in what way are you an obstacle to sacrificial love and how do you try to tell God what to do? Blessings, Fr Luke Jauregui A reflection on the China Virus Pandemic Response

I recently read an article in boredpanda by Liucija Ado-maite and Ilona Baliunaite published about five months ago re-garding wearing masks especially during the early weeks of the pandemic when there was a large the shortage. (https://www.boredpanda.com/coronavirus-medical-mask-proper-use-doctor-leora-horwitz/ ) At that time, it was argued that wearing masks was useless for the general population. Only N95 masks have protective value; however, some reduced risk of sharing infection is found from wearing a lesser mask if you have symp-toms. It creates a barrier when coughing. On March second in Business Insider (https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-dont-need-masks-pence-says-as-demand-increases-2020-2 ), Connor Perrett quotes the Surgeon General Jerome Adams on how it was important to provide masks for the professionals who are at risk and that mask wearing for the gen-eral public is “NOT effective”. In addition, the website points out that on April third Jerome Adams at a White House briefing updated the recommendation: "In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends and the task force recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain”. And today, we hear it in the news all the time that we should wear a mask in all public set-tings with social distancing even though that is not the CDC recommendation. What has changed? At first wearing masks were not useful and now it is recommended to wear them all the time. Fear has been propagated at an alarming rate. Before mass production of masks was achieved, the conventional wisdom was that a non N95 mask would only reduce the spread of disease from infected people who are coughing. A N95 mask protects a person from disease only if it is properly fitted and used properly by a profes-sional. Since one should not be going out in public when cough-ing and sick anyway, masks have minimal usefulness in the gen-eral public. Why the great obsession with wearing masks? Spiritually, the China virus has been a great tool for evil upon us by causing the closure of churches, halting faithful gath-

However, top on the negative effects thrust upon our society is the wearing of a mask. When you engage your neighbor or anyone while wearing a mask, a process of dehumanization occurs. Instead of seeing a person in front of you with count-less facial communications and expressions, you see a faceless creature potentially filled with a lethal virus. This mask wearing is insidious in separating us from seeing each other and isolat-ing us from others. We easily can see this in mask wearing cultures were those forced to cover their face lack in numerous human rights. The very debate on whether to wear a mask or not has divided us. Christ warns us about judging others and more importantly judgment with regards to the intentions of others. It does not matter whether you are for or against wearing a mask in public, we should give due respect to those who disagree with our posi-tion. Discuss civilly the pros and cons to the mask issue per-suading your neighbor. Obsession, fear, politics, or even death is not worth a dehumanizing judgement of your neighbor. Early Christians were willing to die horrible deaths because they would not offer incense to the emperor of Rome, who claimed to be a god. They knew that faith in Christ is more important than the rewards of this life. Let us not bend our knee to what is popular, or ignorance of history, or the fad of the day, or the nonsense of politics, or even a deadly virus; but let us bend our knee to Christ who hung himself on the cross out of love to save us. Offer your mercy and sincere concern for the good of your neighbor. Fr Luke Jauregui
