GOSPEL SUMMARY

Today’s Gospel reading is a familiar one. The crowds continue to follow Jesus, and He is concerned about feeding them. The disciples do not have enough food or money to provide for the crowds. A boy provides the start of the meal that will feed the multitudes—five loaves and two fish. From a humble offering all are provided for.

Mandeville, Jamaica Project July 1 – August 5

(Owensboro Diocese’s Sister Diocese)

The Owensboro Diocese chose to partner in global outreach with the Mandeville Diocese of Jamaica several years ago. As a result, parishes throughout the Owens-

boro Diocese annually collect and ship containers of specified needs for its sister diocese in Jamaica. Mandeville suffers from unem-ployment, high illiteracy, poverty and little opportunity . In efforts towards self-sufficiency, Diocese of Mandeville requests help in several areas. Since Cadiz is a beautiful fertile area, St. Stephen’s Parish committed to help provide some basic gardening tools as requested by Mandeville. Please be generous. Your donations should be brought to the church Narthex no later than August 5.

Religious Education Classes will resume in the Fall. Classes are held each Sunday after Mass. To register your child, please con-tact April Washer at 270-522-7684 or the parish office at 270-522-3801.

Father Greg is hosting a 10 day trip to the Holy Land—-The

dates are Feb. 20 to Mar. 1, 2019. If you have not seen the information on this trip, there are some flyers in the back of the church or you can call the office. If you have family or friends who are not mem-bers of St. Stephen, they are also wel-come to join the group. Call Father Greg with any questions 270-316-2645

BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES Due to the rising costs of school supplies for families, St. Stephen along with other churches assist with the required school sup-plies. Supplies purchased will be used to assist students of our parish and other fam-ilies of the Trigg community. Supply lists are availa-ble in the Narthex. Supplies should be dropped off at the church by the weekend of August 4 & 5. Please note the items being supplied by the PTA.

Help the Retired Ursuline Sisters—Sr. Teresa

Riley will be selling raffle tickets the weekend of Aug 18 & 19 at both Masses, in the Narthex, as a fundraiser for the sisters of Mount St. Joseph. You will have a chance to win some cash prizes and a quilt made by the sisters. Your generosity is appreciated.

Brescia Sunday Aug. 11 and 12 The Diocese

of Owensboro has set aside this weekend each year for every parish to focus on the only Catholic Uni-versity with in our Diocese located in Owensboro. We will have a second collection that weekend. Please be as generous as you can to help support Catholic higher education.

Volunteers Needed for The Way—The Way is a

Christian Youth Center located in Trigg County. It is a Christian Community partnership of churches, pastors, and hundreds of individual believers. They recently moved into their new facility located behind the local high school. They are in desperate need of volunteers to help work with the students. You will find an Annual Report of their 2017-18 activities inserted in the bulletin. Also, there is a list of activities indicating areas in which you can volunteer to help out at The Way. If you are interested in helping this wonderful organization, there are contact numbers listed on the insert located in the bulletin. Another contact would be Carl Heckman—270-522-6441.

Helping Hands

of Trigg County began due to the efforts of St. Stephen Catholic Church reaching out to help a local family in need over 20 years ago. They have become a staple of the community. They are in need of volunteers to help out at their Food Bank and Bargain Barn. There will be more information in the bulletin next week that lists the hours for the Food Bank and the Bargain Barn. Also, brief information will be given pertaining to the type of work a volunteer might expect to do at Food Bank and the Bargain Barn. Phone numbers for volunteering or questions are—K.G. Ariagno 270-522-5616 or 270-522-1001; Phil Graham 270-522-4628. However you would like to help, the workers at Helping Hands would be happy to get you accustomed to the organization and you could work according to your schedule.

RCIA, The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the path adults take to come into full communion with the Church. If you know anyone who is wanting to learn more about the Catholic Faith please see Fr. Greg or contact the office.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

July 29, 2018 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

John 6:1-15 “Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry Him off to make Him king, He withdrew again to the mountain

alone.” Creflo Dollar [his real name] is a “prosperity preacher” at his Atlanta-area based church. He is asking people to give him $65,000,000 to buy a Gulfstream G650 jet. And the only “miracle” preacher Dollar seems to perform is to convince people to give him $65,000,000 to buy a jet. Contrast that with the young boy who gave Jesus his basket of fish, and did not keep any for himself; and Jesus, who blessed it and, without keeping any for Himself, gave it to the disciples to give to the people who had not brought pro-visions when they went to hear Jesus. Then, when the crowd had their fill, and the disci-ples collected twelve basket full of fish and bread, Jesus did not tell the disciples to sell the leftovers so He could buy the best horse and most comfortable saddle. He did not try to take advantage of the people for profit or power. He withdrew to the mountain to be alone. He gave the people the opportunity to learn that acts of generosity, like that of the young boy and Himself, are a challenge to us to choose to be generous to others.

LEARN: August 3 - Roe and Doe legal-

ized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. Many people don't realize that Roe v. Wade legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. Roe says abortions may not be restricted at all dur-ing the first three months and in the sec-ond three months may be regulated only for the mother's health. After "viability" Roe allows abortion to be prohibited but must make an exception for the woman's life or health. But in Roe's companion case, Doe v. Bolton, the Court defined "health" to include "all factors—physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman's age—relevant to the well-being" of the mother. In most states, that is broad enough to permit virtually any abortion in the seventh, eighth, or ninth months of pregnancy if any of these rea-sons is invoked.
