GOSPEL SUMMARY

In John's Gospel, Jesus gives many instructions to His disciples following the Last Supper they share together. Moments before their time in Gethsemane, Jesus lifts His eyes in a prayer sometimes called the Priestly Prayer. Jesus makes clear in the prayer that he knows His time on earth is coming to an end. He has done the work God sent Him to do and in the prayer, Jesus asks God to glorify Him. In glory, Jesus will return to God. However, that glory can only come after the cross. The cross exposes what people did to Jesus, but the res-urrection reveals what God did for Him. It is only through Jesus and His death and resurrection that we can know the love God has for us. Jesus also asked God to strengthen the disciples. Since Jesus would return to the Father, His mission and message must now be entrusted to the disciples. Jesus asks God to protect and unite them.

REFLECTION FOR FAMILIES

As followers of Jesus, we belong to God and will share in Jesus' glory. Think of a way to share that Good News with someone today. Who do you know who may be down or discouraged right now? Maybe you know someone who needs special prayers--pray for them; or send them a note or card for extra encour-agement; or do an act of service. Be sure every member of your family is in-cluded in this mission.

Listening Session with Bishop Medley. The Church is listening – and

wants to hear from you. In 2018, the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops will be held, featuring the theme: “Youth, Faith and Voca-tional Discernment.” The goal of the synod is to help young people on their journey into adulthood and to discern the plan that God has for their lives. Pope Francis has asked bishops around the world to gather input on this topic from the faithful in their diocese. Please join Bishop Medley on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 6:00 PM at St. Francis de Sales, Paducah for an upcoming listening session, and add your voice to the discussion on youth and young adults in our local church today and your hopes for the future. The information gathered at the listening sessions will be compiled and submitted to Rome for consideration at the 2018 Synod. This is a unique opportunity to tell Bishop Medley – and ultimately Pope Francis – what you think the Church is doing well and what it could do better. These general sessions are open to youth, young adults and adults. Your input may also be given online by completing the survey at:

“The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness”

Pope Benedict XVI What are you supposed to do with your life? What does God want you to do with your life? This camp is for young men (high school) who have the courage to begin asking those questions and who want to give their lives to the One who first gave His life for us. Made for More is about giving your life to God. Whether you are being called to marriage, priesthood, conse-crated life, or single missionary life, this camp is for you. Seek more to life than just getting by. Refuse to settle for anything less than the greatness to which God calls you. Strive to be the best Catholic man you can be. STEWARDSHIP EXPRESSIONS Solemnity of the Ascension

Matthew 28:16-20

“Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations…” After His Resurrection, Jesus revealed Himself to His disciples who had been most faithful followers to prepare them for the day when He would return to His Father and no longer be physically with them. Jesus knew it would take time for them to fully realize the meaning of all they had seen and heard; they would be uncertain and fearful about how to proceed with out Him to lead and teach them: they would have to choose whether or not to accept the task of carrying on His mission and teaching others His message by their words and actions. After they saw Jesus ascend to His Father, they banded together in anxiety and uncertainty. We may be tempted to judge them harshly for their lack of faith and courage. But what would we have done? They believed in Jesus but they had wit-nessed many unusual and frightening things. They stayed together and resolved their doubts and conquered their fears. When we have doubts and fears, do we stay together? Do we spend time in prayer to resolve our doubts and act with courage?

Prayer for Memorial Day Heavenly Father, On this Memorial Day, we pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the example of their sacrifice inspire in us the

selfless love of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops, and fill their homes and their lives with your strength and peace. In union with people of goodwill of every nation, embold-en us to answer the call to work for peace and justice, and thus, seek an end to violence and conflict around the globe. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen
