PENTECOST REFLECTION In Old Testament times, Pentecost referred to the fiftieth day after the second day of the Passover celebration and was known as the festival of weeks and is now known as the Jewish Holy day Shavuot. For us, Pente-cost refers to the fiftieth day after the Resurrection of the Lord when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and the other disciples gathered with them. You may notice that the priest’s vestments and altar cloth are red. This is a representation of the tongues of fire that came to rest on the disciples when the Holy Spirit came upon them as Jesus had promised. This descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples gave them the power to proclaim the Gospel with boldness and to give witness to Jesus in times of persecution among other things. When we were confirmed, we received the same powers when we were “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Pentecost is celebrated on the seventh Sunday of East-er which is the last day of Paschal Time or the Easter season. On Monday we return to Ordinary Time. When we think of “ordinary”, we think of common or mundane. In other words “ordinary = not special”. Ordinary, from its Latin root, means order. However, Ordinary time is so called because the Church has arranged this time in order to celebrate the life of Jesus. When placed in context with the rest of the liturgical calendar, we see that the entire calendar is ordered to celebrate the mys-teries of the birth, life, passion, death, resurrection and subsequent sending of the Holy Spirit. When we look at it this way, we certainly see that Ordinary time is not ordinary at all.

THE BIBLE AND THE SACRAMENTS Our next study is The Bible and The Sacraments. This study examines the sacraments of the Catholic faith. We will investigate the deeper mysteries the sacraments con-tain as illuminated by scripture. The Bible and The Sac-raments look at each sacrament individually, seeking to understand where they come from, what they mean, and why they are so very important and foundational to our Catholic faith. As before, we will offer Monday evening and Tuesday morning sessions starting June 24 from 6:00PM-7:00PM and June 25 from 9:00AM-10:00AM for 6 weeks. The workbook for this class is $12.00. There is an optional supplemental book also (available as e-book, paperback, and hardback) that may be purchased individually or through registration. The additional cost for the optional book varies depending on choice. Please contact Melinda Lindner at 830-460-4712 or [email protected] to register.
