Following Him: Scott Hahn Reflects on the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time:

The calling of the brothers in today’s Gospel evokes Elisha’s commissioning by the prophet Elijah.

As Elijah comes upon Elisha working on his family’s farm, so Jesus sees the brothers working by the seaside. And as Elisha left his mother and father to follow Elijah, so the brothers leave their father to come after Jesus.

Jesus’ promise—to make them “fishers of men”—evokes Israel’s deepest hopes. The prophet Jeremiah an-nounced a new exodus in which God would send “many fishermen” to restore the Israelites from exile, as once He brought them out of slavery in Egypt.

By Jesus’ Cross and Resurrection, this new exodus has begun. And the Apostles are the first of a new people of God, the Church—a new family, based not on blood ties, but on belief in Jesus and a desire to do the Father’s will.

From now on, even our most important worldly con-cerns—family relations, occupations, and possessions—must be judged in light of the gospel, Paul says in today’s Epistle.

The first word of Jesus’ gospel—repent—means we must totally change our way of thinking and living, turning from evil, doing all for the love of God.

And we should be consoled by Nineveh’s repentance in today’s First Reading. Even the wicked Nineveh could repent at Jonah’s preaching. And in Jesus we have a greater prophet than Jonah. God has come as our savior to show sinners the way, as we sing in today’s Psalm. This should give us hope—that loved ones who remain far from God will find compassion if they turn to Him.

But we, too, must continue along the path of repent-ance—striving daily to pattern our lives after His.

On behalf of Archbishop Gustavo and Father, we invite you and your family to serve our brothers and sisters in need through the 2018 Archbishop’s Appeal. Your prayers and gift to this year’s Appeal are essential to continue serving homeless children and mothers, bringing spiritual support to the hospitalized, forming future priest and deacons to provide the sacraments of our faith in our communities and so much more! If you have already responded to the Archbishop’s letter sent to your home, Thank you!

If you have not had an opportunity, we invite you to pray and consider how you and your family can renew your gift or make your first gift to this year’s Appeal. Pledge envelopes and pencils are available in the pews (and or in the vestibule) of the Church. Once completed, place your appeal pledge envelope in the offertory during Mass. Online gifts can be made at www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal or by calling the Office of Archbishop’s Appeal at 210-734-1604. Thank you for your prayers and generosity. May God bless you!

Some frequently asked questions about the On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign:

How are the parish targets set and how much is my parish going to receive?

The campaign target for each parish is established at 1.3 times its average offertory for the last three fiscal years. Parishes with a three-year average offertory of $500,000 or less will receive 40%; offertory between $500,000 and $1.3 million will receive 35%; and those with an offertory over $1.3 million will receive 30%.

If the parish does not reach their monetary target, is it responsible for the difference?

Parishes will not be assessed penalties if they do not reach their fundraising target. The expectation is that parishes put forth a good faith effort to follow the recommendations of the archdiocese and the Steier Group in conducting the campaign.

Will funds for the On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign reduce offertory support for the parish?

It is important to emphasize that all gifts to this campaign should not reduce other giving commitments to the Church. A gift to the campaign is and extraordinarily generous gift made freely and faithfully to meet the extraordinary challenges and opportunities presented through the campaign.

Why do we need both the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal and the On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign?

The Church’s mission is advanced in important ways through both the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal and the On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign. In general, the annual appeal supports the daily operations of critical ministries throughout the archdiocese whereas the campaign funds more strategic, comprehensive, and larger scale initiatives to continue to build and grow our parishes, vocations, lay educational/formation programs and Catholic schools well into the future.

How much will I be expected to give to the campaign? You will be invited to consider prayerfully a specific sacrificial pledge to the campaign. How much you end up pledging is, of course, your own faith-guided decision. According to the U.S. Bishops’ 1992 Pastoral Letter, Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response, all we have is a gift from God. We give out of gratitude for our blessings and are asked to return to God in proportion to the blessings we have received. In this way our gift takes on spiritual significance and contributes to our sanctification.

Algunas preguntas frecuentes sobre la Campaña de Capital On the Way - ¡Ándale!:
