PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We are a Catholic faith community
who believes in God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit –
and who follows Christ’s teaching of love and service.
As a parish founded by immigrants, we recognize that we continue to be
a multi-ethnic parish. We welcome everyone
by ministering to their various needs and provide all with the opportunity
to grow intellectually in Christ. Through our sacramental life, we are empowered to build up
the Body of Christ and to become a more vibrant
and faith-filled community.

GROW IN THE FAITH
EVERY TUESDAY evening in Lent at 7:30pm we will gather in the Basilica
Conference Center for small group discussions of topics pertaining to our faith and practice. These groups will be conducted by our priests
in our different language groups. Doing something positive like this is what we should be doing in Lent.
The Holy Season of Lent is a time of special graces for those who are sincere. It calls for extra prayer, fasting at times, giving to the poor or some charity and performing acts of charity. These activities of our parish are simple suggestions and opportunities for anyone who wants to join in our efforts as a parish community. You are also encouraged to plan your own personal activities along with these to make this Lent a time of spiritual growth and enrichment.

From the Pastor's Desk.... I wish to update you again on the status of St. Rosalia Church. As you know it hasn't been used for the celebration of Mass or the Sacraments since June of 2016. The Bishop asked that we remove the Blessed Sacrament from the tabernacle to remove the religious value of the building. This was done, and the Bishop decreed that the Church should be officially closed forever. He did this because the nearest Catholic church (Regina Pacis) is only 3 blocks away and the expenses involved in carrying two churches were prohibitive. It is now the intention of the Diocese to sell the property. In the meantime, we have offered the contents of the church to other parishes and religious institutions which may need these items. The rules are that things can only be given to other churches or Catholic entities but may not be given to individuals. Thus, we have given items to: St. Agatha, Our Lady of Grace, St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Rose of Lima, St. Kevin and St. Mary's High School. We also have taken many things to Regina like the main altar, the main statue of St. Rosalia, memorial plaques, a piano, vestments, vessels, chairs, etc. In the meantime, the Diocese has hired a broker to receive offers to buy the property. It will be sold without the church building on it. The property is not zoned for residential use. The Diocese is handling the sale of the property and the knock down of the church building. I myself do not have any information on this other than that which I have already written about today and in other messages. It is a sad moment in the history of our parish, but we will move forward as usual. Rev. Msgr. Ronald T. Marino

The Holy Father speaks…
His Message for Lent 2018 False Prophets How many men and women live entranced by the dream of wealth, which only makes them slaves to profit and petty interests! How many go through life believing that they are sufficient unto themselves, and end up entrapped by loneliness!
False prophets can also be “charlatans”, who offer easy and immediate solutions to suffering that soon prove utterly useless. How many young people are taken in by the panacea of drugs, of disposable relationships, of easy but dishonest gains! How many more are ensnared in a thoroughly “virtual” existence, in which relationships appear quick and straightforward, only to prove meaningless! These swindlers, in peddling things that have no real value, rob people of all that is most precious: dignity, freedom and the ability to love. They appeal to our vanity, our trust in appearances, but in the end they only make fools of us. Nor should we be surprised. In order to confound the human heart, the devil, who is “a liar and the father of lies” (Jn 8:44), has always presented evil as good, falsehood as truth. That is why each of us is called to peer into our heart to see if we are falling prey to the lies of these false prophets. We must learn to look closely, beneath the surface, and to recognize what leaves a good and lasting mark on our hearts, because it comes from God and is truly for our benefit.

What can I do as a
Parishioner to promote vocations to the priesthood and
religious life?
Say thank you. We all know that it feels good to be thanked for a job well done. Say “thanks” to a priest or religious. It is encouraging for them to feel that the generosity of their lives is appreciated. This appreciation sheds a positive light on priestly and religious vocations. Your show of gratitude may lead others to do the same.

ALL ARE INVITED TO ATTEND
This week begins the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. We thank all who have
participated with a gift to the 2017 Appeal and ask that everyone prayerfully consider making a gift to
the 2018 Appeal. The work and services made possible through your donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal help people in Brooklyn and Queens in ways that no one parish
can alone. We encourage all to watch the brief 2018 ACA Video online at: CFBQ.org/ACAVideo
