OCTOBER 11, 2009
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In Great Britain a few years ago, a television program called Back to the Floor uses the very simple gambit of getting the heads of
large companies to perform the most menial tasks in their organizations. They literally "return to the ground floor." Given the nature
of modern society, many of these heads have never been near the ground floor in the first place, and much humor and comment is
generated from their mixture of bewilderment and often ineptitude. It also gives rise to such memorable cameos as that of two men
stocking supermarket shelves and the one asking the other how much he earns. No amount of coughs, grunts and speaking through
a row of tin cans reduce the stunning effect of $500,000. The show does have a more serious outcome when the boss recognizes
petty, humiliating, or inefficient practices and has the integrity and moves to make changes when he or she returns to the
boardroom. In other sadder cases, the bosses fail to see or empathize with the plight of their employees. On such occasions "caveat
emptor" (buyer beware) might be the best response from the viewer, as brutal or thoughtless management does not produce
consistently reliable products or long company life. Perhaps a TV series here in the US would extend the metaphor from the
business world to other organizations. Every institution, the Church included, has to guard against the tendency for the bosses to
become isolated from the reality of the "ground floor."
In today's Gospel Lesson, Jesus makes his third and most detailed prophecy of his Passion. The Son of Man is going to be
handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and eventually he will be condemned to death. We might have thought that by this
time the Apostles would begin at least to understand if not accept this message. Not a bit of it: James and John approach Jesus and
want a special favor; they want positions of power. The only thing Jesus can offer them is a share in his sufferings, to drink from the
cup He will drink from and be baptized in His baptism of suffering. To any other fantasy they may have, Jesus responds with stern
negatives. To their initial request He replies that they do not know what they are asking. Again, to grant the positions they request
is not within His power. Then, turning to the rest of the Twelve, who are muttering at the brothers' audacity, Jesus insists that the
ways of Non-Christians, lording it over others, must not happen among them. It is not the way of the true disciples. Rather they
must aim be to be of service to others, just as Jesus came to be of service and even sacrificing His life to bring about others'
redemption. John and James claim to be able to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, but the events of His Passion, when "all his disciples
deserted him and ran away", show that their eyes are still blinded to reality. Later, of course, the disciples will follow the road Jesus
has shown them, but it will be a long learning curve for them.
If we are honest, this severe central tenet of Christ's teaching proves to be a long learning curve for us, too. We live in a world
that loves comfort and praises as well as the attainment of material wealth, fame and security. There are still rewards for public
service. Latest figures show a remarkable percentage of people claiming to spend free time in volunteering to help their neighbor and
the community in some way. However, these people are not the media's baby. Perhaps their lives are too unexciting and
insufficiently lurid. If we are to follow Jesus along the road to Jerusalem, our eyes need to be focused on what we can do for others
rather than ourselves. Here, too, there may be the temptation to wish to be seen doing good rather than a genuine concern with
doing it. To keep us on the right track we need a moment of honest reflection to determine whether our actions really helps those
we aim to serve or whether our activities earn us "brownie points" on some divine scale of our own devising. We, too, can be sons of
Zebedee, promising everything but really only for ulterior motives. The desire to sit on the right hand of the Master dies hard, but
the mixture of the stern negatives from Jesus and His constant support for the true way forward can remove even the greatest
obstacles.
Many thanks to all who took part in my official installation Mass and reception last Saturday. Your presence and especially your
prayers are most appreciated. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Columbiettes for their generous donation of
$1150 from their Craft Fair proceeds to the Church Restroom Fund.
In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely--visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who have wandered from
the Faith and all who have died, especially Deacon Antonio Bezares and Rita Forgione. Also, pray for the souls of all the faithful
departed of our Parish Family.
May God always be pleased with us!
Monsignor Michael
TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Saint Ann School Children are avid readers. They
just love books. The school usually runs three Book Fairs
each year and they do not seem to be enough for our
students.
In addition to the school Book Fairs, our students are
preparing for an afternoon and evening of enjoyment at
Barnes & Noble’s Bridgewater store on Wednesday,
October 21st. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade students will
present a program in recital and song form at 4 p.m. at the
store, and at 7 p.m., the 4th and 5th Grade students will give
a presentation on the Constitution of the United States.
After both performances, the children will do their favorite
thing – they will beg their parents to buy them some new
books.
To help make this event a great success, we are
distributing Vouchers through the School and PREP
students to anyone who would like to make a purchase at
Barnes & Noble. This voucher will allow St. Ann’s to earn
up to 20% on your purchase.
Everyone is invited to attend. Please come for an
enjoyable afternoon or evening (or both) and help our
school by purchasing an item or two (or more).
Thank you and God bless you.
If you aren’t able to attend on October 21st, the voucher
can also be used anytime from October 20th-22nd.
We hope to see you there!
We are a Stewardship Parish Your Stewardship in Treasure for last weekend was:
Collection..…………………...…………..…$9,545.00
Poor Box …………………...………...…………$89.00
Thank you and May God Bless you abundantly!
Please remember the Church of St. Ann in your will.
2009 Bishop’s Annual Appeal
Because We Are Church
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…
This week I mailed a follow-up letter to parishioners who have
yet to respond to Bishop Bootkoski’s request to support the
2009 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If this letter arrived after you
made your gift, please accept my apologies and my thanks for
your generosity. Otherwise, I ask that you prayerfully con-
sider making a gift to the 2009 Bishop’s Appeal. Thank you.
Catholic Youth Ministry Basketball The parish is seeking a volunteer to serve as commissioner
of the St. Ann’s CYM basketball program. The primary
responsibilities are to coordinate basketball activities and
schedules with St. Ann’s church, CYM Basketball, St. Ann’s
volunteers and coaches.
Interested parties should contact Rev. Msgr. Corona.
St. Ann School is sponsoring a "Clothing Drive" on
Thursday, October 22. Items requested include:
clothing, shoes, stuffed animals, pocketbooks and belts.
They can be dropped off from 7:30-4:30 in the school
parking lot.
St. Ann School is sponsoring a "Comedy Night" with
comedian Mike Morse (winner of America's Funniest
People) on Saturday, November 7. Doors open at
6:00 p.m. Tickets are $25. Includes free drinks and
light snacks. Cash bar. For information, call 908 725-
1008.
Good stewards must not argue about who is the most im-
portant. Today’s Gospel says clearly that those who aspire
to greatness must humbly serve the needs of all. Even Jesus
came not to be served, but to serve.
Hope and Healing A Day for Bereaved Persons and Families
Sooner or later grief comes to all of us and we find ourselves unprepared for the wide range of emotions and reactions we feel as we undertake the mourn-ing journey. Each member of the family grieves differently. Brother André offers hope and encouragement by gently demonstrating the importance of dealing with grief in a healthy way – emotionally and spiritually.
