Last week’s church offering Average weekly expenses

FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners,

With all the recent emergency collections here for earth-quakes and hurricanes, not to mention the recent drive for toilet-ries for the homeless in the locality, it might be easy to forget our Food Pantry’s needs as Thanksgiving arrives this week.

This holiday has always been an occasion and an opportunity to actively support the good work accomplished by this parish ministry. Besides the usual twice-weekly distribution of dry and canned goods, as well as fresh produce, Pantry efforts this Thanksgiving involve the purchase of 250 fresh turkeys for distribution to our regular clients, along with the purchase of trimmings, such as stuffing and sweet potatoes.

(Please note that this distribution occurs the week before Thanksgiving. In accord with safety protocol, we can not accept the donation of thawed or even frozen turkeys for our clients. Most folks readily understand the wisdom of this procedure.)

What we do accept is financial support, along with the donation of dry or canned goods. No items requiring refrigeration are ―doable‖.

We encourage you to give God thanks by attending our Thanksgiving Mass (bilingual) on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00 am. Food donations of the type indicated here can be brought to the Thanksgiving Mass or left at the rectory during office hours (see bulletin cover for this schedule).

The collection at that Mass is earmarked totally for our Food Pantry. Checks should be made payable to St. Raphael Church, along with the notation line marked ―Food Pantry‖, so that the final total can be properly accounted and transferred, in a lump sum, from our operating account to the Food Pantry. Thank you for remembering the ―food-insecure‖ at this time of the year.

Thanks too, to Pantry coordinator Elizabeth Ciro and all our parish volunteers, and all our vol-unteers from the Queens Center for Progress, who selflessly commit to this corporal work of mercy.

-Father Jerry Jecewiz

This weekend’s second collection: CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT... Respond to Pope Francis’ call for the 1st World Day of the Poor today. Please be generous in this weekend’s second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in six people lives in poverty. With this collection you support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are struggling across the country. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local antipoverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.
