Isaiah beckons all who hunger and thirst to come to the Lord for satisfaction. The psalmist cries out, “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs” (Psalm 145:16). Saint Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Finally, in the Gospel, we hear the story of the miraculous feeding of over five thousand people from a mere five loaves and two fish. Most of us have our material needs met on a day-to-day basis. These scriptures, nevertheless, have much to say to the contemporary believer. We must ask ourselves, “Where are my deepest hungers? Where are my thirsts?” After material needs are satisfied and, in some cases, over-satisfied, many people still experience a deep longing for spiritual balance and well-being. As the loaves and fish are multiplied in today’s Gospel, perhaps our prayer can be a longing for the satisfaction of the deepest needs that only God can fill. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Guidelines for recommencing in-person worship

For the foreseeable future, all people will remain dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays. Those who feel vulnerable because of their age or health are encouraged to stay home, while those who are sick should not attend public worship. Streaming Masses will continue. Here are some additional guidelines: All people must wear a mask and must be

seated at least in every other pew to ensure adherence to social distancing guidelines of six feet, which equates to approximately 25% capacity inside the church. Members of the same household, however may sit

together. All communicants will be encouraged to receive the Sacred Host in the hand. The chalice of the Precious Blood will not be offered. The Sign of Peace, at this time, will not include a handshake, instead we will turn to the person next to us and offer a reverential bow.

St. Pius X Church will be open from 8am until 12noon,

Monday through Friday, for private prayer.

RCIA RCIA is a journey of building a relationship with God and his people, a journey of learning and service to others, a journey of conversion. This is the journey all of us are on by committing to be disciples of Jesus. Share this journey with other disciples and with those who do not yet know Jesus Christ. Invite others to experience the path you have chosen for this journey, a Catholic path. Then tell Sister Edie of your invitation. She will follow up with another invitation, leaving the door open for those curious enough to investigate. There is no commitment to “ become Catholic” when engaging in RCIA. The invitation merely leaves people free to make an informed decision for the path that is right for them in their own journey.

Hearing God’s Call Our seminarians are studying hard to learn the many skills that are needed to lead our church. They are using this time to pray and develop a relationship with God that will lead them clearly as they embrace discipleship that has the people of God and their faith journey front-and-center in their love for God and God’s people. They discern sincerely and humbly if the Holy Spirit is leading them in this direction. We pray for each of our seminarians as they undertake this journey for us in love and trust. Especially, we pray this week for David Slusarick. We will pray for each of our seminarians for a week as a special way to say that they matter to us and we appreciate the gift they are to us.

Pathways Have you thought about taking advantage of Pathways, a diocesan program held this year right in our own neighborhood? This opportunity may not come again for a long time. NOW is the time; seize the moment! The Francis Fund of the diocese will help to make finances not an obstacle. Four members of our faith community have expressed an interest in Pathways. One parishioner has already applied to the Francis Fund and received funding at 100%! Call Sister Edie at the parish office or contact the diocese directly to register for Pathways and apply for financial assistance through the Francis Fund. Brochures describing the Pathways program are available in the back of the church.

Beatitudes through the Eyes of Creation Blessed are those who hold the space for

dialogue with the natural world, God, and each other, for they will hear the fullness of life.

Find true happiness deep in your soul by taking a walk in the cool of the early morning, or in the evening after the hot sun goes down – or sit in nature’s stillness and feel the relief of the shade, hear the song of the bird, and see the life that blooms all around you.

Getting to Know the Family We celebrate St. John Vianney on Tuesday this week. St. John is the patron saint of priests. He was born in France in 1786, the 4th child with 5 siblings, and baptized that same day. He grew up in a Catholic farming family that

helped the poor often. John was 4 when the anticlerical Terror phase of the French Revolution kicked in. Priests went into hiding or faced execution. This made priests John’s heroes in his growing-up years. John prepared for and received his first communion and confirmation in secret at age 13. John’s learning as a child was interrupted, which made later learning difficult for him. With extra tutoring and recognition of his zeal for priesthood, he was ordained in 1815. He tirelessly spent the rest of his life bringing people of the countryside back to the faith, since they had grown ignorant of and indifferent to their faith due to the Church being unavailable during the Revolution. A prayer attributed to St. John Vianney captures the depth of love for God in his heart. Is it our prayer too?

I love You, O my God, and my only desire is to love You until the last breath of my life. I love You, O my infinitely lovable God, and I would rather die loving You, than live without loving You. I love You, Lord and the only grace I ask is to love You eternally... My God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love You, I want my heart to repeat it to You as often as I draw breath. PRAYER AND HUMILITY

Arm yourself with prayer rather than a sword; wear humility rather than fine clothes.—St. Dominic

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Tuesday: St. John Vianney Wednesday:Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major Thursday: The Transfiguration of the Lord; Hiroshima Memorial Day Friday: St. Sixtus II and Companions; St. Cajetan; First Friday Saturday: St. Dominic

Being a Welcoming Community Who would have thought that creating physical distance from others would be an authentic way to care for our neighbors, especially the most vulnerable! This pandemic challenges us to re-think “community.” Some people are too isolated within themselves to create community even when they are around many people. Others are bound up and interconnected with the lives of many other people, even though they may live alone. The secret to community lies in the way we let other people get through to us and the way we move out of ourselves. We learn and are healed by committing ourselves to others, especially those at the margins of our lives and the margins of society. Jesus showed us the way in his caring for others, especially those at the margins. Make the spiritual and corporal works of mercy a part of your every-day, in other words – a habit. Serving others is a healing balm to your soul. Inspired by commentary from Richard Rohr.
