First Sunday of Lent
Dear Friends,
St. Paul reminds us in his Le er to the Corinthians that we, the Church, are one body made up of many parts. In that same le er, he tells us that there are different gi s, but there is one Holy Spirit who gives those gi s to each of us. We, the parish family of St. Pius X, are one body made up of many parts. There are as many different gi s and talents in this parish as there are people in this parish family. The ques on that each of us must ask ourselves is: Am I using all the gi s and talents God has given to me to build up this parish family? Next weekend, we will have our parish ministry fair. This is an opportunity for the en re parish to take a fresh look at the specific ways God is calling each of us to use our gi s and talents. As you’ve heard me say frequently from the pulpit, being Catholic is not simply about a ending Mass on Sunday. Sunday Mass is the me for us to gather as a family and to worship God; but that’s just part of being Catholic. We are called to use our gi s and talents to share the gospel with others. I’m invi ng each one of you to stop by our parish ministry fair to discern how God is calling you to serve our parish and the wider community. Miscellaneous: Please make some me over the next few evenings to
a end our parish mission. It’s a great way to begin the Lenten season.
One of the great Catholic devo ons is praying the Way
of Cross, especially during Lent. If you’re looking for a spiritual prac ce to add to your Lenten program, come pray the Way of the Cross on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 a er benedic on.
Along with “giving something up” for Lent, why not try
to increase both the quan ty and quality of your daily, personal prayer? Are you trying to spend at least 15 minutes a day in silence? If not, Lent is a great me to make it a habit.
Spring begins in just a li le over two weeks! Let’s all
pray for winter’s quick departure and spring’s swi arrival.

School News
Last week we had our first full day of STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, arts, math) activities with the theme being “Our Lady of Fatima.” The middle school students are participating in the YMCA school program which allows them to learn skills and partici-pate in pickle, wallyball, and basketball. Ms. LePore’s first grade class enjoyed their walk and time at the Westerly public library. On Febru-ary 8, 2017, the students in Kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 2 of St. Pius X Regional Academy celebrated 100 days of school. The students came to school dressed like they were 100 years old. They paraded through the school as part of the celebration. The day also included many activities that revolved around the number 100. Each of the three classrooms had a special 100th day activity to work on. These activities included putting together 100 piece puzzles, building with 100 objects, and a science experiment involving 100 drops of water. A fun day was had by all! This week we began the Lenten season by celebrating with whole school Mass. The mass was hosted by grade 6. Thank you for your continued support and prayers. God Bless, Janet Rufful/Principal ___________________________________________________

THE JOY OF EVANGELIZATION
Reflection/Prayer: Have you ever experienced the joy of evangelizing? Give God a chance to speak through you.
Let us witness to the newness, hope, and joy that the Lord brings to life. Let us feel within us “the deligh ul and comfor ng joy of evangelizing: (Paul VI, apostolic exhorta on Evangelii Nun andi, n. 80). Because evangelizing, proclaiming Jesus, gives us joy. Instead, egoism makes us bi er, sad, and depresses us. Evangelizing upli s us.

Lent Forty days of interrup on To lives grown comfortable: Lives built on shi ing sand,
Instead of solid rock.
It’s a journey through the desert, To confront both self and sin, And renew a sacred friendship,
Or raise it from the grave.
It’s a me for introspec on, For charity and prayer:
Look in, look out, look up— To forge love’s holy bond.
It requires perseverance, And sincerity of heart,
To stay the course and not give up, When that tempta on comes.
For those who make this journey, And let the season bear its fruit; These forty days will always be A most blessed interrup on.
