First Reading EX 17:3-7

In those days, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? Was it just to have us die here of thirst with our children and our livestock?” So Moses cried out to the LORD, “What shall I do with this people? a little more and they will stone me!” The LORD answered Moses, “Go over there in front of the people, along with some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which you struck the river. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.” This Moses did, in the presence of the elders of Israel. The place was called Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled there and tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD in our midst or not?”

Second Reading ROM 5:1-2, 5-8

Brothers and sisters: Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God. And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.

Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?” —For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.— Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink, ‘ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ; when he comes, he will tell us everything.” Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking with you.” Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him. When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. Many more began to believe in him because of his word, and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.”

En aquellos días, el pueblo, torturado por la sed, fue a protestar contra Moisés, diciéndole: “¿Nos has he-cho salir de Egipto para hacernos morir de sed a nosotros, a nuestros hijos y a nuestro ganado?” Moisés clamó al Señor y le dijo: “¿Qué puedo hacer con este pueblo? Sólo falta que me apedreen”. Respondió el Señor a Moisés: “Preséntate al pueblo, llevando contigo a algunos de los ancianos de Israel, toma en tu mano el cayado con que golpeaste el Nilo y vete. Yo estaré ante ti, sobre la peña, en Horeb. Golpea la pe-ña y saldrá de ella agua para que beba el pueblo”. Segunda lectura Rm 5, 1-2. 5-8

Hermanos: Ya que hemos sido justificados por la fe, mantengámonos en paz con Dios, por mediación de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Por él hemos obtenido, con la fe, la entrada al mundo de la gracia, en el cual nos encontramos; por él, podemos gloriarnos de tener la esperanza de participar en la gloria de Dios. La espe-ranza no defrauda, porque Dios ha infundido su amor en nuestros corazones por medio del Espíritu Santo, que él mismo nos ha dado. En efecto, cuando todavía no teníamos fuerzas para salir del pecado, Cristo murió por los pecadores en el tiempo señalado. Difícilmente habrá alguien que quiera morir por un justo, aunque puede haber alguno que esté dispuesto a morir por una persona sumamente buena. Y la prueba de que Dios nos ama está en que Cristo murió por nosotros, cuando aún éramos pecadores.

En aquel tiempo, llegó Jesús a un pueblo de Samaria, llamado Sicar, cerca del campo que dio Jacob a su hijo José. Ahí estaba el pozo de Jacob. Jesús, que venía cansado del camino, se sentó sin más en el brocal del pozo. Era cerca del mediodía. Entonces llegó una mujer de Samaria a sacar agua y Jesús le dijo: “Dame de beber”. (Sus discípulos habían ido al pueblo a comprar comida). La samaritana le contestó: “¿Cómo es que tú, siendo judío, me pides de beber a mí, que soy samaritana?” (Porque los judíos no tratan a los samaritanos). Jesús le dijo: “Si conocieras el don de Dios y quién es el que te pide de beber, tú le pe-dirías a él, y él te daría agua viva”. La mujer le respondió: “Señor, ni siquiera tienes con qué sacar agua y el pozo es profundo, ¿cómo vas a darme agua viva? ¿Acaso eres tú más que nuestro padre Jacob, que nos dio este pozo, del que bebieron él, sus hijos y sus ganados?” Jesús le contestó: “El que bebe de esta agua vuelve a tener sed. Pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré, nunca más tendrá sed; el agua que yo le daré se convertirá dentro de él en un manantial capaz de dar la vida eterna”. La mujer le dijo: “Señor, dame de esa agua para que no vuelva a tener sed ni tenga que venir hasta aquí a sacarla. Ya veo que eres profeta. Nuestros padres dieron culto en este monte y ustedes dicen que el sitio donde se debe dar culto está en Je-rusalén”. Jesús le dijo: “Créeme, mujer, que se acerca la hora en que ni en este monte ni en Jerusalén ado-rarán al Padre. Ustedes adoran lo que no conocen; nosotros adoramos lo que conocemos. Porque la salva-ción viene de los judíos. Pero se acerca la hora, y ya está aquí, en que los que quieran dar culto verdadero adorarán al Padre en espíritu y en verdad, porque así es como el Padre quiere que se le dé culto. Dios es espíritu, y los que lo adoran deben hacerlo en espíritu y en verdad”. La mujer le dijo: “Ya sé que va a ve-nir el Mesías (es decir, Cristo). Cuando venga, él nos dará razón de todo”. Jesús le dijo: “Soy yo, el que habla contigo”. Muchos samaritanos de aquel poblado creyeron en Jesús por el testimonio de la mujer: ‘Me dijo todo lo que he hecho’. Cuando los samaritanos llegaron a donde él estaba, le rogaban que se que-dara con ellos, y se quedó allí dos días. Muchos más creyeron en él al oír su palabra. Y decían a la mujer: “Ya no creemos por lo que tú nos has contado, pues nosotros mismos lo hemos oído y sabemos que él es, de veras, el Salvador del mundo”.

Living Our Faith… Third Sunday of Lent Parish Social Ministry

34.” Do not be afraid to set your sights higher, to allow yourself to be loved and liberated by God. Do not be afraid to let yourself be guided by the Holy Spirit. Holiness does not make you less human, since it is an encounter between your weakness and the power of God’s grace. For in the words of León Bloy, when all is said and done, “the only great tragedy in life, is not to become a saint”.[32] GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE (ON THE CALL TO HOLINESS IN TODAY’S WORLD) This Week in Social Ministry: Tuesday, March 17 – Pantry will open for regular hours (10:00 am to 12:30 pm). Wednesday, March 18 – Houston Food Bank Mobil Pantry – Volunteers start at 9:30 am and those wanting food start at 10 am until we run out of food. Thursday, March 19 – Solemnity of St. Joseph; Pantry will open for regular hours (10:00 am to 12:30 pm). Houston Food Bank Mobil Pantry – We will have our Produce truck here at the back parking lot and will start to distribute food at 10:00 am. We will distribute until we run out of food but we need to end by 12:30 pm. We invite all members of our community to come and take home some of the produce. We also need helper volunteers. We need some volunteers to come and set up the new tents and tables before the regular volunteers come and distribute the food. For set-up we will meet at 8:30 am and for take-down we will meet at 12:30 pm. These volunteers can stay and help distribute the food or can leave and come back to do take-down. Please come and give God and hour or two helping our brothers and sisters in need! We need to develop a team of workers that will keep this Mobil produce truck coming to our parish. We have a regular group of neighborhood people that come every month to take home some much needed produce. We also have a group of ded-icated volunteers that come and help every Tuesday and Thursday and are now even coming on Wednesdays for this truck and two Fridays a month for regular deliveries. We need more volunteers! I want to take time and bulletin space to thank all those members that constantly donate food. I feel very blessed when I get a phone call with people telling me that they have a load of groceries to donate. Could I please open the door. God, what a blessing for our community! Let’s keep it going! Join and become our third Wednesday of the month volunteer! Only one day a month volunteer giving many elderly people in our community and those families trying to make it the produce they need to be healthy! GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE SOBRE EL LLAMADO A LA SANTIDAD EN EL MUNDO ACTUAL Esta semana en el ministerio social: Martes 17 de marzo: la despensa se abrirá durante horas regulares (10:00 a.m. a 12:30 p.m.). Miércoles 18 de marzo: Despensa móvil del Banco de alimentos de Houston: los voluntarios comienzan a las 9:30 a.m. y los que desean comida comienzan a las 10 a.m. hasta que se nos acabe la comida. Jueves 19 de marzo - Solemnidad de San José; La despensa se abrirá durante horas regulares (10:00 a.m. a 12:30 p.m.).

Houston Food Bank Mobil Pantry - Tendremos nuestro camión de productos aquí en el estacionamiento trasero y comenza-remos a distribuir alimentos a las 10:00 am. Distribuiremos hasta que se nos acabe la comida, pero tenemos que terminar a las 12:30 p.m. Invitamos a todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad a que vengan y se lleven a casa algunos de los productos. También necesitamos voluntarios. Necesitamos que algunos voluntarios vengan y preparen las nuevas carpas y mesas antes de que los voluntarios regulares vengan y distribuyan la comida. Para el montaje nos reuniremos a las 8:30 a.m. y para el desmon-taje nos reuniremos a las 12:30 p.m. Estos voluntarios pueden quedarse y ayudar a distribuir la comida o pueden irse y regresar para desmontar. ¡Ven y dale a Dios y una o dos horas ayudando a nuestros hermanos y hermanas necesitados! Necesitamos desarrollar un equipo de trabajadores que se encargará en que este camión móvil de vegetales siga

llegando a nuestra parroquia. Tenemos un grupo regular de gente del vecindario que viene cada mes para llevar a casa

algunos productos muy necesarios. También tenemos un grupo de voluntarios dedicados que vienen y ayudan todos los

martes y jueves y ahora incluso vienen los miércoles para este camión y dos viernes al mes para entregas regulares.

¡Necesitamos más voluntarios! Quiero tomar tiempo y espacio en el boletín para agradecer a todos los miembros que

constantemente donan alimentos. Me siento muy bendecido cuando recibo una llamada telefónica con personas que me

dicen que tienen una gran cantidad de alimentos para donar. ¿Podría por favor abrir la puerta? Dios, ¡qué bendición para

3rd Sunday of Lent

Dear friends, “Suffering and illness have always been among the greatest problems that trouble the human spirit. Christians feel and experience pain as do all other people, yet their faith helps them to grasp more deeply the mystery of suffering and to bear their pain with greater courage. From Christ’s words they know that their sickness has meaning and value for their own salvation and for the salvation of the world. They also know that Christ, who during his life often visited and healed the sick, loves them in their illness.” These words from the General Intro-duction to the Pastoral Care of the Sick remind us of who we are, as the Church, in times like these. Like all of our brothers and sisters, we are deeply concerned and anxious to all that we can to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus, yet our faith gives us courage and assures us of the loving presence of Jesus in our midst. In this time , we have taken a number of steps here at St. Pius V, following the directives of the Archdiocese and of Public Health officials and using common sense. What follows will give you some idea of how we take seri-ously your safety and the safety of others. It would be difficult to list everything, but these are some of the more important things. Liturgy and Prayer Mass and the Sacraments: There is no change to the mass schedule, although the Cardinal has dispensed with the obligation to attend mass on Sundays. If you miss mass because you wish to be cautious, there is no sin or guilt attached to that. We will celebrate all of the scheduled masses, offer confession, anoint the sick, baptize, and celebrate marriages. We will make some adjustments to minimize the risk of infection, but otherwise con-tinue to live our faith to the full. At communion, we will receive only the host and we ask you, strongly, to re-ceive the host in your hands with consideration for your fellow communicants and the minister of the Eucharist. We ask you to refrain from shaking hands at the exchange peace and to maintain a reasonable distance from oth-ers when taking your seats. We are sanitizing most of the accessible surfaces after each mass with the help of our Liturgical Ministers, but it would be best to refrain from avoidable contact, especially with the statues of the saints and the crosses. Prayer: The church will be open all day, every day, for prayer and adoration. We ask that you remain in the main body of the church and do not enter the area of the altar and the tabernacle. Faith Formation and Other Parish Activities We have extended the Spring Break for Children’s Faith Formation Classes and will not resume until we are cer-tain that it is advisable to do so. We will continue to prepare our Elect for the Easter Rites and those classes will continue. We are suspending Sunday Food and Fellowship in the cafeteria until further notice and we will make a decision about the Festival in few weeks. We will, however, hold the raffle on April 26 th and we urge you to continue to support the parish with your ticket purchases. Your support is even more urgently required at this time. The continuation of other parish activities will be decided on a case-by-case basis. With proper caution, most meetings and small gatherings can take place without disruption. However, call the office if you have a question. Parish Office, Faith Formation Office, Social Ministry. The Parish Office will continue to operate as usual and will be open Monday to Friday, 9-5. The Faith For-mation Office will also be open at the usual hours. Our Social Ministry will continue to provide assistance to those who need it and the food pantry will be open as usual on Tuesday and Thursday. We have modified our food distribution methods and taken care to protect those who serve, but especially at this time, we need volun-teers to help with food distribution. We need your help. The situation with the coronavirus and the public response to it continues to develop and we will make changes as necessary. We will try to keep you informed. Please check the parish website and Facebook page regularly for updates. Comfort us, O Lord, for we are like your disciples on the storm tossed seas, unsettled by what lies ahead. We turn to You, our Healer and Guide, to still our hearts in our time of need and hear our prayer: Heal those who are sick with the coronavirus and protect the elderly and most vulnerable. Give strength to all who tend to our health and wisdom to researchers who work toward a cure. Open our eyes and hearts, as you did during Hurri-cane Harvey, that we may look beyond our immediate needs to care for others who need help. Through the Holy Spirit, guide our leaders to make wise decisions for the welfare of all the people they serve. Grant eternal rest to those who have died from the virus. May Mary, Our Mother, who has heard our pleas in the storms of our lives, intercede to her Son, that we may find healing and a prompt end to this illness. Mary, Star of the Sea, pray for us. Queridos amigos y amigas,

El sufrimiento y la enfermedad siempre han constituido uno de los más grandes problemas que perturban el espíritu humano. Como todas las demás personas, los cristianos sienten y experimentan el dolor; pero su fe les ayuda a comprender más pro-fundamente el misterio del sufrimiento y a soportar su dolor con más valor. En las palabras de Cristo ellos encuentran que la enfermedad tiene un sentido y un valor para su salvación propia y la del mundo. Ellos saben también que Cristo, quien durante su vida con frecuencia visito y curo a los enfermos, los ama precisamente porque sufren.” Estas palabras de la Intro-ducción General del Cuidado Pastoral de Los Enfermos nos recuerdan quiénes somos, como Iglesia, en momentos como estos. Como todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas, estamos profundamente preocupados y ansiosos por todo lo que podamos para evitar la propagación del virus Covid-19, sin embargo, nuestra fe nos da un valor y nos asegura la presencia amorosa de Jesús en nuestro medio.

En este tiempo, hemos dado varios pasos aquí en San Pío V, siguiendo las directivas de la Arquidiócesis y de los funcionarios de Salud Pública y utilizando el sentido común. Lo que sigue le dará una idea de cómo tomamos en serio su seguridad y la seguridad de los demás. Sería difícil enumerar todo, pero estas son algunas de las cosas más importantes.

Liturgia y Oración

Las Misas y Los Sacramentos: No hay cambios en el horario de las misas, aunque el Cardenal ha prescindido de la obligación de asistir a misa los domingos. Si se pierde la misa porque desea ser cauteloso, no hay pecado ni culpa asociada a eso. Cele-braremos todas las misas programadas, ofreceremos confesión, ungiremos a los enfermos, bautizaremos y celebraremos matri-monios. Haremos algunos ajustes para minimizar el riesgo de infección, pero seguiremos viviendo nuestra fe al máximo. En la comunión, recibiremos solo la hostia y le pedimos, enérgicamente, que reciba la hostia en sus manos con consideración por otros comulgantes y el Ministro de la Eucaristía. Le pedimos que se abstenga de estrechar la mano en el intercambio de paz y que mantenga una distancia razonable de los demás cuando tome asiento. Estamos desinfectando la mayoría de las superficies accesibles después de cada misa con la ayuda de nuestros ministros litúrgicos, pero sería mejor evitar el contacto directo, es-pecialmente con las estatuas de los santos y las cruces.

Oración: La iglesia estará abierta todo el día, todos los días, para oración y adoración. Le pedimos que permanezca en la parte principal de la iglesia y no ingrese al área del altar y el tabernáculo.

Formación de Fe y Otras Actividades Parroquiales

Hemos extendido las vacaciones de las clases de formación de fe para los niños y no continuaremos hasta que estemos segu-ros de que es aconsejable hacerlo. Continuaremos preparando a nuestros Elegidos para los Ritos de la Pascua y esas clases continuarán. Dejaremos de vender las comidas en la cafetería los domingos hasta el nuevo aviso y tomaremos una decisión sobre el Festival en pocas semanas. Sin embargo, realizaremos la rafia el 26 de abril y le animamos a que continúe apoyando a la parroquia con la compra de sus boletos. Su apoyo es aún más urgente en este momento. La continuación de otras activida-des parroquiales se decidirá caso por caso. Con la debida precaución, la mayoría de las reuniones y pequeñas reuniones pue-den tener lugar sin interrupciones, sin embargo, llame a la oficina si tiene alguna pregunta.

Consuélanos, Señor, pues somos como tus discípulos en la tormenta que sacudió los mares, inquietos por lo que se avecina. Nos dirigimos a Ti, nuestro Guía y Salvador, para que calmes nuestros corazones en nuestros momentos de necesidad y escu-ches nuestra oración: Sana a todos quienes están enfermos con el coronavirus y protege a las personas mayores y a los más vulnerables. Dale fuerza a todos quienes cuidan de nuestra salud y sabiduría a quienes buscan y luchan por encontrar una cura. Abre nuestros ojos y nuestros corazones, como lo hiciste durante el Huracán Harvey, para que podamos ver más allá de nuestras necesidades inmediatas y ayudar a aquellos que necesiten ayuda. Por medio del Espíritu Santo, guía a los líderes a tomar decisiones sabias por el bienestar de todas las personas a las que sirven. Concede el descanso eterno a todos quienes han muerto por el virus.
