Parish News

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, or Corpus Christi, is traditionally cele-brated with a Eucharistic procession, often through the main roads of a city. Our parish procession will take place after the Saturday 4 PM Mass this weekend. We here present a brief excerpt that discusses one aspect of this public celebration of the reality of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist: The Council of Trent concludes its remarks on Corpus Christi with something that offends our ecu-menical ears and has doubtless contributed not a little toward discrediting this feast in the opinion of our Protestant brethren. But if we purge its formulation of the passionate tone of the sixteenth century, we shall be surprised by something great and positive. First of all let us simply listen to what Trent says. Cor-pus Christi must show forth the triumph of the truth in such a way that, “in the face of such magnificence and such joy on the part of the whole Church, the enemies of the truth will either fade away or, stricken with shame, attain to insight.” If we remove the polemical element, what we have left is this: the power in virtue of which truth carries the day can be none other than its own joy. Unity does not come about by po-lemics or by academic argument but by the radiance of Easter joy; this is what leads to the core of the Christian profession, namely: Jesus is risen. This leads, too, to the core of our humanity, which yearns for this joy with its every fiber. So it is this Easter joy which is fundamental to all ecumenical and missionary activity; this is where Christians should vie with each other; this is what they should show forth to the world. This too is the purpose of Corpus Christi...Let beauty shine out in all its radiance when you come to express this joy of all joys. Love is stronger than death; in Jesus Christ God is among us. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, “What Corpus Christi Means to Me: Three Meditations”, from Feast of Faith: Approaches to a Theology of the Liturgy
