My name is Josie Angell. Twenty-two years ago my husband Raymond and I relo- cated to Texas from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When we retired to Huffman in 1996 we joined St. Philip the Apostle. I would like to share with you a very special and rewarding outreach volunteer program active in our parish for the past ten years, one for which I’ve had the privilege to serve as chairwoman for three years—the Prison Ministry Ro- sary Group of St. Philip. I would like to tell you about this much needed service we provide to the Catholic women inmates at the Plane State Jail in Dayton, Texas on the second and fourth Saturday of every month from 12:00 noon to 2:30 pm. Our main function is to pray the Rosary with the inmates and to give instruction on how to pray the Rosary to those who need help. In the time allotted, we also show videos on various Catholic topics such as Divine Mercy, saints, abortion, forgiveness, and encour- age discussion groups with the women and their participation in the class. We are received by the Plane State women with enthusiasm, appreciation, and a “thank you so much for taking the time to come here”—sometimes with tears in their eyes. A former inmate penned these affirming words: “I looked forward to the Rosary class and couldn’t wait to meet and pray the Ro- sary. I am now in the habit of saying my Rosary every day, and it gives me such peace. Thank you all for taking the time to come into the prison and share your knowledge and faith with us. “The Rosary class helped me stay focused on what is truly important in my life, which is following the plan that God has set for me. I know that He listens to my prayers and answers them, and I know that my Mother Mary intercedes on my behalf. God gives me the strength and grace each day to overcome whatever obstacles I may face. “And I have you volunteers to thank for helping me get to the place I am in my life. Thank you for volunteering your time to come to the prison and help us to strengthen our relationship with God. You all have helped me so very much.” You may ask, How does it make one feel when participating in this volunteer service? The reward is heartfelt joy from the Holy Spirit. God works in our lives as we experience love and a sense of fulfillment in serving the Lord in one of his “Corporal Works of Mercy”. Pope Benedict XVI wrote about the spiritual grace we receive in shared relationships, especially when we reach out to help others: One’s deep personal sharing in the needs and sufferings of others becomes a sharing of [one’s] very self with them. Those who are in a position to help others will realize that in doing so they themselves receive help: being able to help others is no merit or achievement of their own. This duty is a grace. [Deus Caritas Est “God is Love” 2005] I invite you to join us in our Rosary Group of St. Philip as a committed volunteer. Please give some prayerful thought to this very special and rewarding ministry. If you would like to volunteer or ask any questions about this ministry of prayer, please call me at (281)-324-1747. I am always happy to answer any questions you may have. Sincerely yours in Jesus and Mary, Josie Angell.

Dear Parishioners, we’ve had a noticeable increase in crime-related activities in the Huffman area in the past few weeks—drugs, robbery and theft, assault etc. Understandably, the protec-tion of our parish families and employees and the security of our campus continues to be a high priority. For the near term at least, we are locking the doors of our parish facility each day when the campus is at rest. Should you wish to stop by and pray in the Church, ring the doorbell of the parish office located at the front entrance of the Church for assistance. Sincerely, Father Barker.

Receiving Holy Communion When you receive Communion during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, it is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ that you are receiving. Holy Communion, in the Catholic Church, is reserved for those who have received the sacra-ment of First Holy Communion, have been catechized (taught) in our Catholic faith and have made a profession of faith. One should abstain from Holy Communion if they are in mortal sin and have not received the sacrament of recon-ciliation. For those who are not Catholic or are in need of reconciliation, we ask that you refrain from receiving Holy Communion but you may proceed up during Communion time to receive a blessing. To do so, please fold your arms over your chest - you will receive a blessing from the priest or Eucharistic minister during this time. A reminder for those receiving the Blessed Sacrament in the hand, please place the consecrated Host on your tongue while you are standing in front of the minister of the Eucharist. This instruction is from the Vatican and was implemented in 2004. Here’s the scoop: “Although each of the faithful always has the right to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, at his choice, if any commu-nicant should wish to receive the Sacrament in the hand, in areas where the Bishops’ Conference with the recognitio of the Apostolic See has given permission, the sacred host is to be administered to him or her. “However, special care should be taken to ensure that the host is consumed by the commu-nicant in the presence of the minister, so that no one goes away carrying the Eucharistic species in his hand. If there is a risk of profanation, then Holy Communion should not be given in the hand of the faithful.” Redemptionis Sacramentum (“Instruction on the Eucharist”) Congregation for Divine Worship, March 25, 2004. Also, if you choose to receive only the Blessed Sacrament and not from the Chalice, it is fitting nevertheless to pause for a moment to honor Christ’s presence in the Precious Blood—with an appropriate sign of devotion. We would not think to pass a friend on the street without some acknowl-edgement. Our Lord Jesus Christ deserves no less, and most assuredly, a great deal more. As you are passing by the Precious Blood, I encourage you to offer a simple sign of devotion—perhaps a slight bow of the head or the Sign of the Cross. Then continue on to your pew to offer your silent Prayer of Thanksgiving to Christ for the gift of his Eucharist. In this way, we can all offer a strong visible witness that the Real Presence of Christ—his Body and Blood—is being welcomed into our lives at St. Philip’s with all due respect, reverence and awe. If you would like to participate more fully in our Catholic Church, either by joining or reacquainting yourself, please contact our parish office at 281-324-1478.

To all Parishioners, Lay Volunteers, Parish Leaders & St. Vincent de Paul Society Members: Please be aware of an area-wide security issue for Catholic par-ishes from the Archdiocese:

“St. Edward (Spring), St. Martha (Kingwood), St. Mary Magdalene (Humble) and St. Anthony of Padua (Woodlands) have reported that a group of people have been coming onto their properties to beg for help. Each parish has offered to help them with food and other neces-sities, but they continue to solicit funds in the parish park-ing lots. Several of the parish’s security officers have re-quested that they leave the property, but they continue to return week after week. Only when the security officers threaten to have them arrested do they stop coming.”

REGARDING ST. PHILIP: DO NOT—FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER—GIVE MONEY TO ANYONE ON CAM-PUS WHO SOLICITS YOU. DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR PERSONAL CONTACT INFORMATION TO ANY STRANGER. DO NOT ARRANGE TO MEET ANY STRANGER OFF-CAMPUS. NEVER BRING SOLICITORS INTO THE CHURCH BUILDING. THE ANSWER TO ALL REQUESTS FROM SOLICITORS IS “NO”. INFORM AN USHER AND THE PASTOR IMMEDIATELY. All legitimate requests for assistance at St. Philip are made by TELEPHONE CALL ONLY to the St. Philip office during office hours Monday – Friday. These requests will be forwarded to the St. Vincent de Paul Society for their caring and careful response. As a reminder, no one ever has permission to solicit on the Church grounds and parking lot. Only pre-approved St. Philip Catholic Church-related groups may set up displays in the vestibule and collect funds. No personal trading or commerce of any kind is permitted on the grounds and parking lots of St. Philip parish. ALWAYS CONSIDER THE SECURITY NEEDS OF YOUR OWN HOME, AND THEN REALIZE THE CHURCH HAS THE SAME NEEDS FOR ITS MANY FAMILIES. Sincerely, Reverend Richard Barker, Pastor

Prayers Recited after Sunday Mass “O Sacrament Most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, All Praise and All Thanksgiving, be every moment thine”. (recite three times)

Amen.
