What if, one Sunday morning, in the middle of our Worship service, the Holy Spirit came upon all of us as a rush of a great wind and tongues of fire? And what if we were all prompted to walk out the front doors and go into downtown Wind Gap, or Pen Argyl, where we talked to people in Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and other native languages of some of the residents, telling them about Gods glory and the saving power of Jesus? Sound far-fetched? Sound a little scary, and maybe a little exciting? The Holy Spirit does come to us in every Worship service, maybe not in tongues of fire and a rushing wind, because maybe we arent as open to that as the Disciples were. But that doesnt mean that the Holy Spirits call on our lives is any less real or powerful. Each week we are called by the Spirit to go out from St Peters and make a difference in the world, just as those Disciples did when they first felt the call of the Spirit. May Gods Holy Spirit continue to work in your life and may you respond to the call to witness in the world. Pastor Chris

St. Peter's Good News

Lutheran Church Newsletter

Plainfield Township, Pennsylvania (610) 863-6859 June 2019

“And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind,

and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire,

appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.” (Acts 2:2-3)

I was talking with some folks recently about the story of Pentecost and the question came up

concerning the way in which the Holy Spirit came and settled on the disciples. Someone asked

whether the Holy Spirit still came like a violent wind and tongues of fire, or if the Holy Spirit simply

came as a still, small voice. My answer was, “Yes” to both. I believe there are times when the Holy

Spirit comes to us as a still, small voice and moves us in ways that are both profound and

life-changing. Many people believe that this is the only way the Spirit works: quietly, unseen, changing

people’s hearts, but not in any loud or flashy way. As Lutherans, we sometimes joke that we are

the “frozen chosen.” The idea of the Holy Spirit grabbing hold of you and making you run out into

the streets evangelizing people by speaking in tongues and telling them about the glory of God –

well that probably scares most of us half to death. But this is precisely what happened on the day

of Pentecost.

The disciples were all gathered together in one place when the Spirit descended on them

and they were shaken out of their fear and shyness in order to be bold and confident in the Lord.

Their witness had such an impact that 3000 people were baptized as a result of it. The formation of

the Church had begun and the world would never be the same.

What if, one Sunday morning, in the middle of our Worship service, the Holy Spirit came upon

all of us as a rush of a great wind and tongues of fire? And what if we were all prompted to walk out

the front doors and go into downtown Wind Gap, or Pen Argyl, where we talked to people in Spanish,

Arabic, Chinese, and other native languages of some of the residents, telling them about God’s glory

and the saving power of Jesus? Sound far-fetched? Sound a little scary, and maybe a little exciting?

The Holy Spirit does come to us in every Worship service, maybe not in tongues of fire and

a rushing wind, because maybe we aren’t as open to that as the Disciples were. But that doesn’t

mean that the Holy Spirit’s call on our lives is any less real or powerful. Each week we are called by

the Spirit to go out from St Peter’s and make a difference in the world, just as those Disciples did

when they first felt the call of the Spirit. May God’s Holy Spirit continue to work in your life and may

you respond to the call to witness in the world.

Dear LCW:

If there were a thousand

ways to say “Thank you,” I

would use them all to tell you

and the LCW Women how

much you all did to help make what I expected

to be a sad day into a most memorable one.

Peter would certainly have enjoyed it.

I want to thank you for the beautiful hand-made

cross you had made. It’s a beautiful momenta

and something I will cherish.

You and the LCW women did such an excellent

job in organizing and feeding the large group of

family and friends who came to the luncheon. I

marveled at the efficiency of the group working

together to make everything go smoothly.

In talking with the women after the luncheon, It

was apparent that your work, was a “labor of

love”.

We’ve often talk about “Love thy neighbor,” Help

one another,” “Do unto others, etc… the LCW

organization does that and more. It epitomizes

the work that we, as Christians, are supposed to

do.

CHURCH MUSIC SUNDAY –

JUNE 16, 2019 - 9 AM

The theme of Church Music Sunday this year is Music and Mission. St. Peter ’s Mission Statement begins with “We are called to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through worship, education, service programs and activities with a commitment of time and talent.” Through music we will be celebrating St. Peter’s ministry of outreach to those in our congregation, in our community and throughout the world.

LOCAL MISSION

The people of St. Peter ’s reach out to our community through many social ministry pro-jects. Just a few examples of th is important ministry include making shawls and other handmade items, provid ing Advent and Lenten luncheons for nurs ing home res idents, co l lect ing food and c lo th ing for the needy , providing college scholarship money to our youth, and planting and harvesting crops for local food banks. We are grateful for the many members of St. Peter ’s who use their time and talents to reach out to those who need our help in our community.

GLOBAL MISSION

On Church Music Sunday our musicians will also offer music from countries around the world that

represent the ELCA “companion synods”. What are companion synods?

As a member of St Peter’s, you already walk with companions in our local church to help each oth-

er grow in faith and in service to God and others. Our relationships with our companion synods do

the same thing at a much larger level. As part of a global Lutheran community, we gratefully re-

ceive the witness of global brothers and sisters whose faith, hospitality, resilience and zeal ener-

gize us in our own congregations. In response, we share our gifts and talents to address the root

causes of poverty, hunger and human need, fight malaria, HIV and AIDS, build communities that

coexist in peace, and prepare women and men to preach the good news of Jesus Christ throughout

the world.

One of the ways that we support our global companions is through the Good Gifts program. This

program looks to provide tangible, long-term gifts that will change individual lives and whole com-

munities by providing animals, plants and seeds, farming equipment, health education and immun-

izations, clean drinking water and education to sustain these things. This is not a short-term hand-

out, but a program that makes lasting changes.

As a part of our Music and Mission Sunday, you will be given the opportunity to contribute to a

Good Gifts mission of your choice. We hope you will set aside this day and time to join with others

in this congregation to acknowledge our own social ministry mission and to accept the challenge to

touch the lives of those in need around the world through the Good Gifts mission.

SPORTSMANSHIP AT THE

HIGHEST LEVEL!!!

Eric Lobb, son of Chris and Diane Lobb, recently demonstrated

sportsmanship, selflessness, and integrity at the highest level. Eric, a senior at Pen Argyl High School and member at St. Peter ’s, competed in the District 11 track and field championship on May 15; he competed in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. In the 300-meter hurdles, with one final hurdle to cross, Eric was in 2

nd place—that was until the

boy running in 1st fell over the final hurdle.

Eric won the race. However, at the postrace ceremony, Eric gave his gold medal to the 2

nd place finisher; he swapped his gold

for a silver. Eric’s time qualified him to advance to the PIAA state championships. Eric commented after the race, “It’s not all about winning for me. It’s more about the experience and what you can take from this moving forward.” The Lobb family is, I’m sure, very proud of Eric’s selfless gesture as are the members of St. Peter ’s.

This young man ’s character should “pay forward” to a very successful future.
