St. Peter's Good News
Lutheran Church Newsletter Plainfield Township, Pennsylvania (610) 863-6859 January 2019
“The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.”
John 1:9
I was talking to a friend recently and he was SAD. And no, I don't mean that he was
unhappy. I mean that he suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder, a condition that affects
many people during the winter months when there is less daylight, the temperatures are
colder, and we are forced indoors for more of the time. Doctors attribute the symptoms
of SAD, which include depression, less energy, trouble concentrating, greater need for
sleep, and an increased desire to be alone, to a deficit of sunlight in a person's regular
routine. One of the recommended treatments for SAD is light therapy, which involves sitting
a few feet away from a very bright light source (20 times brighter than normal room lighting)
for a period of 10 - 45 minutes per day, depending on the patient's response. This is a real
and serious condition that can have a devastating effect on a person's normal routine but,
with treatment, the symptoms can be eased and they can resume a normal life.
I think we suffer something similar when we are missing the Light of Christ in our
lives. Sometimes it happens after a great loss in our lives or when the cares of this world
weigh us down and we stop going to church or reading our Bibles or praying to God. Failure
to have Christ's Light in our lives can cause us to lose hope, to become doubtful, to have
less energy and an increased desire to cut ourselves off from the rest of the world. And the
effect is cumulative. The worse we feel, the more we cut ourselves off, and the more we cut
ourselves off, the worse we feel. But when we come to Christ to light our way in the world,
our lives can be what God intends them to be, full of life and a desire to live with others. We
need light to live and we need The Light to truly live.

If you can’t make the meeting, but are interested in being a sponsor, please see Pastor Chris.
New Members
Welcome Meeting
If you are interested in joining St Peter’s, or
know of someone who might be interested in
joining, there will be a New Members Welcome
meeting on Sunday, January 27th. The meeting
will be held between the two worship services.
This is an informal chance to gather and find out
more about St Peter’s, meet some of our church
council members, and find out how you can
become a member of St Peter ’s. Please
see Pastor Chris or sign up on the sheet in
the Information Area to indicate your interest.
We will look to receive new members into
membership some time during February, at
both of the Sunday morning services.
POINT OF INFORMATION…
It was recently discovered that the church has a radon gas level in the basement area that is slightly above the recommended maximum. The property committee is currently involved in an effort to mitigate this issue.
Several contractors have been contacted and work should begin in the next several weeks on the mitigation program/system. More information will be provided as it is available.

No Altar Flowers for Lent
This year during the Lenten season
you’re going to notice some things that are a
little different from previous years, and some
things that are very different. There will be more
information on that in next month’s newsletter
but, for now, one of the changes that you will
see is that there will be no altar flowers during
the season of Lent. This is to recognize the sol-
emn nature of the Lenten season and the som-
berness of our worship, even in the midst of our
normal Sunday celebration. As the church looks
a little more bare than normal, we wait with ex-
pectation for the celebration of Easter when the
fullness of all our Easter decorations highlights
the resurrection of our Savior.
If anyone would like to volunteer with being a
greeter, head usher, Communion Team, prayer
readers, lector, etc… please contact the church
office at 610.863.6859 and we will forward your
name to the coordinator. There is no experience
necessary.

Discussion of Communion Every Sunday
Attention all Communion Assistants
& Altar Guild Volunteers! We are considering extending communion to every service. We value your opinion and feed-back and encourage you to attend a special meeting on January 13 at 9:00AM. During this meeting, we will discuss what it means to increase to a weekly communion schedule and ask if you will be willing to serve more than what you are currently scheduled. If you do not currently serve on the communion teams or Altar Guild but would like to become a volunteer, you are more than welcome to attend this meeting!
Please come with an open mind and a willingness to share your thoughts. We will meet in the Sanctuary at 9:00AM on January 13th.
If church is cancelled due to the weather, the meeting will be rescheduled to January 20 at 9:00AM.
Dear Members of St. Peter’s:
We at God’s Garden of Grace would like to
say thank you for being partners in our com-
munity mission of feeding the hungry of the
Slate Belt. We would not have been as suc-
cessful without your support.
Network in
Monroe County. For every dollar we spent
for the garden, we delivered over 10lbs., of
fresh produce to people in need. We are proud
to have you as partners and look forward to
working together in the future. We can always
use extra hands during the growing and
harvest season and invite any willing hearts
to join us.
On Saturday, January 26, 2019, we are having
a Garden Party, a luncheon and planning
meeting for the upcoming 2019 season. We
will be reviewing 2018 and start the process
for next year.
The meeting starts at 11:00am. It is informal
and will be in St. Peter’s Fellowship Hall. We
hope you will join us for the celebration as
we meet and share fellowship together.
Yours in Christ,
Jim Sandt

The New Year
Dear Master, for this coming year,
Just one request I bring.
I do not pray for happiness
Or any earthly thing;
I do not understand
The way Thou leadest me;
But this I ask—Teach me to do
the thing that pleaseth Thee.
I want to know Thy guiding Voice,
To walk with Thee each day.
Dear Master, make me swift to hear
And ready to obey;
And thus the year I now begin
A happy year will be,
If I am seeking just to do
The thing that pleaseth Thee.
