A smaller entry met a steadier trade which has been seen

throughout the Country in the past few days. Our overall

average on the day was 186.8p/kg which was in line with

the rest of the Country. The well fleshed lambs sold to a

top of 198p/kg for 43 kilos at £85.20 from Miss A Cleave

of Pigsdon, Launcells. Rod Wood of Forda realised

195p/kg for his pen of 42 kilos at £82. Two vendors

realised 194p/kg, John Turner of Queensland for 41.2 kilos made £80 and Messrs Gregory of Pencuke, St Gennys for 42.2

kilos made £82. 11 pens over £90 to a top of £96 sold by

Charles Bellew & Sons of Court Barton.

STORE LAMBS

Small entry with no big framed lambs on offer. The trade was

stronger than expected with the top being £63.50 from Mark

Walter of Bradworthy.

666 DRAFT EWES

Again, a very large entry with nearly 400 plain and light

weight ewes on offer which reflected in the overall average.

The good meat ewes met a very strong trade from start to

finish. Top on the day was £109 from Helen Hambly of South

Hill for Texel ewes. The Suffolk x topped at £103.50 from

David Seccombe of Seccombe Farm followed by Rob Johns

of Bradworthy who

made £99.50. Mule ewes up to £82.

BREEDING EWES

A small entry met a flying trade and more could have been sold as several

prespective buyers went home empty handed. Top on the day was £165 for

three pens of Suffolk x 2T from Peter Dunn of Instow.

Cull ewes flew past £100!

The biggest entry of calves ever seen in the new Livestock Market

saw a packed ring of buyers in the sales gallery push the best of the

entries up between £25 - £35 compared to last week.

81 Stirks hit a flying trade with the best hitting £600 plus, with the

overall top call of the day being £602 for the best of an outstanding

line up of British Blue (3 month old) steers in from J Ovens of Halwill

with others from the same family at £600 and £582. John Elliott of

Bradford saw and exceptional trade for his team of (3 – 4 month old)

British Blue steers and heifers topping at £590 with his best reared

Limousins hitting

£580, £560 and

£500. Messrs

Dilling of Highampton topped the Simmentals at £485 with Messrs

Schuttkacker & Son of Bere Alston near Tavistock topping the

Herefords at £460. Best reared heifers topped at £485 for the best of

the British Blues in from Messrs Hooper of Saltash at £465 with their

top 8 averaging £461. An Honourable mention to Messrs Nicholls of

Parracombe, Exmoor who made the difficult trip down, however were

very well rewarded with the best of their trailer load hitting a massive

£600.

A fantastic line up of 226 baby calves saw the best ‘even dearer’

however the 2nd and 3rd class calves were a little easier. Top of the day

in this section was Messrs P H Collins

Partnership who reached £462 after

winning both the Pretty Maid Cup, The

Famers Guardian Award and The Folk 2

Folk Champion Calf Award. The

Champion calf of the day headed up the

fantastic entry in from Messrs Collins

which saw others to £430 and £410 for

4 week old calves. The best baby

Herefords topped at £415 on behalf of

Messrs Ford of Chumleigh and £395 for

Mark and Kim Davey of Lewdown.

Charolais baby calves hit a flyer with

Kevin Ellis of North Petherwin at £375

with Nigel Isaac of Hollacombe close up

at £365. Peter Heywood of Ashreigney

topped the baby Limousins at £380 with

best baby Aberdeen Angus in from

Cleave Farm Partnership of Weare

Gifford at £235. Messrs P & J Dymond

travelled up from Liskeard with very young Devons hitting £130 (x4) whilst the best South Devons reached £158 for A

T Bayly. It was great to see Russel Risdon of Camelford here for the second week hitting £240 for a bunch of young

Herefords with Messrs Stone of Pancrasweek selling very young Charolais at £338.

Again, good entries of Holstein bull calves saw the best 3 month olds to £200 for Steve Daniel of Torrington with others

at £192 for Messrs Nancekivell of Kilkhampton and £180 for J J Uglow & Sons of Whitstone. Best baby Friesians came in

from O M Francis & Son of Egloskerry at £125 with Mike Hopper at £118.

Speaking after the auction, James Morrish said ‘what a day! Every pen in the calf section was full with calves having to be

penned on the loading bays and in the dairy pens. A very big thank you to all vendors, purchasers and Kivells staff who

made it a very special St Peter’s Fair Sale’.

The winners of this week’s Genus prizes for the highest priced calves under 42 days were R & S Home,

Stowford Park, East Putford with a British Blue making £360 sired using fertility plus, the heifer section was

won by K & MJ Chamberlain, Ladford, Shebbear with a British Blue sired using fertility plus making £370.

Kivells auctioneers are privileged to have been picked to auction at 2 recent

charity events.

Kivells Auctioneers, David Kivell and Mark Bromell had the Honour of

conducting a ‘2 evening’ auction at Hartland Abbey and helped raise over

£42,000 for 2 charities being Cancer Research UK & North Devon Hospice.

Guests saw the top call of the night reach £4,000 for a helicopter ride lunch

for 6 at Portledge Estate.

HOLE IN ONE FOR DAIRY CREST

On the 5 July Kivells were delighted to have helped raise over £11,800

at the Dairycrest (Davidstow) Charity Day.

Top call at the after dinner auction was £520 for a flat screen TV.

Kivells Charity total for 2018 is over £150,000!!

CHARITY CORNER

Another successful St Peter’s Fair sale with a huge crowd of

buyers in attendance. Several vendors cancelled consignments

fearing an easier trade but the trade jumped £50 on pervious

weeks and more could have easily been sold. Very few forward

saw a top of £1145 for a 27 month old Hereford steer from

Mr R Bowden, Churchtown with Aberdeen Angus from Mr C

Kivell of Buckland Brewer achieving £1090 for four 27 month

olds. Top priced heifers were £1095 achieved by Messrs

Daniel of Upcott for a 24 month old British Blue and also

£1095 was realised for a 34 month old Wagyu heifer from

Messrs Vanstone of Huddisford. A good solid trade for 18 –

22 months grass cattle with plenty of bunches of 18 – 22 month

old British Blues over £900 to a top of £1055 for two from

Messrs Daniel of Sutcombe. Young single suckled cattle sold well. South Devon steers from Mr P Balsdon of Patchacott

saw 12 month old steers to £935 with others at £870. Single suckled Limousins 14 month old from Messrs Thorne of

Panson, St Giles reached £850 with other Aberdeen Angus steers to £770.

Another massive trade for the young Dairy x Continentals. A consignment of 18 4 – 7 month old Charolais steers and

heifers from Messrs M W & M E Hawking of Highampton saw steers to £610 and heifers to £545. More required to

meet demand. Strong Holstein Steers sold well, Messrs Wheeler of Norwood topped at £940 for 6 well farmed steers

2 months old with others from Mr T J Daniel of Sutcombe to £870.

A short entry saw a top call of £490 for two young Friesian x Channel Island cows from Mr N Granger of Darracott.

The candidate: Kivells are looking for a candidate who is very presentable, articulate, has a superb eye for detail together with excellent time-management skills and a strong knowledge of all MS Office packages and the local area. In addition, the successful candidate will be bright, cheerful, willing to help and quick to learn. Responsibilities will include audio typing, copy typing, preparation of reports, preparation of sales particulars and associated paperwork, diary management, client liaison on the telephone and in person, upkeep of filing systems and general PA and office duties as required. The candidate will be required to work under their own initiative, be forward thinking and prepared to accept challenging tasks. Previous PA/secretarial experience is an advantage and agricultural knowledge would be beneficial. A full UK driving licence is desirable but not essential. Competitive salary commensurate with experience for the right candidate. This is an interesting and varied role requiring a candidate with a strong work ethic and the ability to adapt.
