SALT & LIGHT MINISTRY NEWS
CRS RICE BOWLS: ENCOUNTER MAJD
In Iraq, we encounter Majd and his family, people forced to flee violence, searching for stability.
How are we called to welcome the stranger in our midst?
How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities?
Visit crsricebowl.org for more.
DID YOU KNOW: Recently 25% of the total funds collected from the 2017 CRS Rice Bowl Collection was returned to our parish?
Each of our three food cupboards received $126.62 ($54.44 for 2016), so a total of $379.86 was returned to our parish.
All three food cupboards thank you for your past Rice Bowl support and hope that you will be as generous again this year.
A CHALLENGE: Last year we collected $1519.44; which more than doubled the 2016 collection of $600.
Let’s see if we can do it again.

FROM THE PASTOR
Praised be Jesus Christ!
This week I am taking a brief break from our ongoing series on Eucharistic belief and devotion in order to welcome everyone to the First Sunday of Lent!
As with any special season of our liturgical year, I encourage you to take full advantage of all that Lent offers.
I am firmly convinced that God bestows unique and abundant graces during the season of Lent on those who seek the graces which are not as readily available during other times of the year.
Just as God humbled himself to dwell among us in our human nature, so too in some way does he humble himself to the rhythm of our liturgical calendar.
Is there some sinful habit which you struggle to overcome? Lent is the time to do it.
Has your prayer life slipped and your devotion grown cold? Lent is the time to get it back on track.
Is there some near occasion of sin in your life (a person, place, or thing which easily leads you into sin) from which you know that you need to separate yourself? Lent is the time to make that change.
With this in mind, I just read a fantastic Lenten message written by Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia for this Lenten season.
He includes a very timely list of excuses that we tend to put up when faced with the Lenten call to repentance. He writes:
For every forbidden, hurtful, dishonest thing we like to do, we’re experts at self-deceit; at training our consciences to…offer us alibis on demand, like: “I didn’t have a choice;” or “Hey, there
were extenuating circumstances;” or “The Church is out of touch;” or “There’s a new paradigm for thinking about this
particular unpleasantness;” or “I know it’s not ideal, but this is the best I could do;” or “There’s been a revolution in Church thinking
on all sorts of complex issues-like mine;” or “OK this is wrong, but it’s not THAT bad.”
We all have a barrel of excellent excuses. You do. I do. And we add to them all the time.
Please take a moment to review your “barrel” to see what changes you could make.
Just a reminder that our updated confession schedule includes abundant opportunities to receive this Sacrament of God’s Mercy.
St. Felix Church Wednesday 5:15 pm-6:00 pm; Sunday 7:00 am-7:45 am
St. Francis Church Thursday 5:15 pm-6:00 pm; Saturday 7:00 pm-7:45 pm
St. Dominic Church Friday 5:15pm-6:00 pm; Saturday 3:00 pm-3:45pm
The Diocesan-wide Day of Penance will be held Wednesday, March 14th
during which time I will have an “outside” priest confessor available in our parish.
We will offer the Stations of the Cross every Friday evening of Lent at 6:30 pm at St. Dominic church.
Also, I strongly encouragement you to make weekday Mass a part of your Lenten practices, if you can.
Take note that I have moved the Wednesday Mass at St. Felix up to 12:05 pm which seems to be a more convenient time for many of our regular weekday Mass attendees.
I also hope that people who work in or around Clifton Springs might be able to take advantage of that Mass during their lunch break.
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary, Father Peter Van Lieshout
