FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Dear Fellow Peterites,

The October-December quarter was a busy one for the OldBoys’ Union of St. Peter’s College and it gives me greatpleasure to present you the e-newsletter for the 2ndquarter on behalf of the editorial team. The month ofOctober began with the traditional Joe-Pete over 40s’cricket encounter for the Garry Melder trophy, followed bythe popular ‘Peterite Oktoberfest’ organized by the OBUHteam. The inter batch six-a-side cricket tournament wasworked off in November for the Gerry De Mel trophy andthe December season was kicked off with the Lighting ofthe Christmas tree at the Peterite Lounge followed by theSing Along on the 8th December.

The OBU took steps to felicitate the teachers at College byorganizing a “Paduru Party” which was thoroughly enjoyedby the members of the tutorial staff. The numerous batchgroups were also active during the holiday season and youwill find all the details of these events in the pages of thisissue. The OBU joined the priest community of St Peter’s toorganize the traditional Christmas midnight mass at theCollege chapel and all who attended were able to enjoy thetrue spirit of Christmas.

Further, completion work on the OBU secretariat building isprogressing at a brisk pace and the aim is to completeconstruction as soon as possible in order to offer itsmembers state-of-the-art facilities to enjoy. The OBUwishes to thank the different batch groups, overseasbranches and individual members who have supportedgenerously in funding this project.

Also, the editorial team has been working hard to bring you the latest updates of the OBU and College on an ongoing basis through the website(www.stpetersobu.com), Facebook (www.facebook.com/obuofstpeterscollege/), Twitter (www.twitter.com/obuofstpeterscollege) and SMS alerts (registration details at the end of this newsletter). We hope you will make use of these services.

We hope to bring you news from the 3rd quarter(Jan-Mar)through our 3rd issue as soon as possible and look forward toseeing you at the 45th limited overs cricket encounter on the23rd March and at all the schools league SPC rugby fixtures.We hope you will mark the dates down and as always rallyround to "Lend a heart and lend a hand and lift the flag onhigh!“

The Old Peterites in Oman organized their first ever paduru party on 27thSeptember 2018 at Al Falaj Hotel in Muscat,Oman.

Many Old Peterites including their families came down to enjoy somenostalgic Sri Lankan music played by the live band while enjoying a lavishmouthwatering Sri Lankan buffet.

AGM – ALUMNI OF ONTARIO CANADA


The Alumni association in Canada conducted its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on November 30th at 7pm at the JC Banquet Hall followed by scrumptious dinner and entertainment. Special Guest, Mr Asela Lihinikaduwa (President OBU of St Peters College Colombo), attended the AGM representing the main OBU. The association also hosted Rev. Fr. Trevor Martin, Rector of St. Peter's College in Toronto from Aug 05th - 20th, 2018.

The fourth quarter of 2018 was a successful and memorable one for Peterites in the UAE. Some of the key highlights included:

October 2018• SPC emerged champions at the Lanka Lions inter school rugby tournament, which is the most

anticipated sporting fixture among Sri Lankans in the UAE, with over 18 boys school team participating every year.

• Yet another successful Fright Night, the Peterite annual Halloween party, was consecutively held for the 8th year based on a Latin theme.

• SPC became Plate champs at the inaugural St Thomas inter school badminton tournament, where over 16 boys/girls schools participated.

November 2018• During Asele Lihinikaduwa’s (President OBU) second meeting with Peterites in the UAE, it was

decided that discussions would be taken forward to integrate the SPC OBU UAE into the overseas branch network of the main OBU

• SPC became runners up at the annual Wesley bowling championship, where over 22 Sri Lankan boys/girls schools participated.

December 2018• Following the success at the Lanka Lions rugby tournament 7 Peterites were selected to represented

Sri Lanka through Ceylon warriors at the annual IRB Dubai rugby sevens .

OBU UK – GOING ABOVE & BEYOND

St Peters College Old Boys Union UK is very active and continues to support our Alma mater in numerous projects. The OBU branch in UK is led by Themiya De Mel who has gone above and beyond in providing whatever support required to St.Peter’s College. Some of the highlights of 2018 are as follows,

Champions of the Annual Festival of Cricket UK. (FOC)

September - Rev.Fr Rector’s visit: Fr. Rector met the OBU UK committee in London to discuss his progress on current projects and his vision for College.

October – OBU President’s visit: OBU UK committee met President Asela to discuss his ideas for the global OBU’s and ongoing projects.

November - Annual Dinner Dance “La Bamba 18” was a mega success . Over 500 guests comprising many Peterites, their families and friends attended the event which was held at the Grange St Pauls Hotel in London. Desmond de Silva, Mariazelle Goonatilake & Clifford Richards were present as guest artists along with 2 live bands. The guests dined on a sumptuous 3 course meals whilst music and entertainment continued till 3am. There were many prizes on offer for the guests including a raffle draw where the top prize was a return air ticket to New York.

The 2019 AGM is to be held on the 28th April at Osterley Cricket Club from 11am



OLD BOYS’ CRICKET FIESTAL 2018

The Old Boys’ Union Gampaha branch hosted “Cricket Fiesta 2018”,oneof the major events in the branch’s calendar. The event was held on 25th

November(Sunday) at the St. Peter’s College Gampaha branchgrounds.

The event was a success, with 16 teams participating and a crowd ofover 150 in attendance to cheer the teams. Hony. General SecretaryRavika De Silva represented the main OBU body at the event.

The 2008 batch emerged as champions of ‘Cricket Fiesta 2018“defeating the 2010 batch, who were declared runners up.



"LEGENDS WITH MARIANS“-MUSICAL SHOW

The Old Peterites batch group of 87-92, organized the LEGENDS annual musicalshow for the 5th consecutive year, which was held at the Mount Lavinia Hotel,Empire ballroom on 5th October 2018 with the ever popular MARIANS inattendance.The proceeds of the show, amounting to around Rs1.5 Million, will be directedtowards projects for the benefit of the tutorial staff and students of College.

BACK TO THE 90’STHE 93/94 BATCH CELEBRATES 25 YEARS SINCE LEAVING COLLEGE

Since its inception in 1999, the mission of the 93/94 batch group has been to helpour Alma Mater-St Peter’s- achieve its goals and in particular to seek to makemen of stature and also provide financial assistance when required to underprivileged Peterites.

With the above aim in mind the batch group organized “While in Boyhood” tocelebrate 25 years since leaving college, on the 10th November 2018 at theKingsbury Hotel. The members and their wives who participated would certainlyhave been proud of the phenomenal success of this celebration, as the fundsgenerated through this event were directed towards to main program, TheScholarship Fund, which the batch has been maintaining for the last 15 years.

The next milestone celebration for the 93/94 batch group will be in 2023, as theyachieve a personal milestone of 50 years.



"In St. Peters Bowers", the get together organized by the Pre 70s Batch Group washeld on the 24th November at Hotel Sapphire Wellawatte. The Priest communityof St. Peter's led by Fr.Rector, was also present and thoroughly enjoyed the eveningwith Fr.Crispin joining the band on stage to sing a few of the old favorites.

It was a highly successful and enjoyable event with all present having a fabuloustime dancing to the music of Black Velvet and singingcarols.

ANNUAL GATHERING - BATCH OF 2005

The annual gathering of the ‘Batch of 2005’ was held at Can Lankabeach restaurant in Dehiwala. The batch group enjoyed an eveningfilled with fun, laughter and fellowship together.

The next event for the batch would be the tent at the limited oversencounter. (previously titled ‘Keys of the Kingdom’ and currently re-named ‘Knock-Out Lounge’).



RUGBY FOUNDATION NEWS


The Rugby season has kicked off and the rugby community ofCollege is buzzing like a bee hive. The Junior and Senior teamsare in training and all the coaches are running their schedules toensure the boys are ready for the tough season ahead.

This year we are in Segment –1A. The teams are as follows:

1. Royal College2. St Peter’s College3. Kingswood College4. Wesley College5. St Thomas Mt Lavinia6. Maliyadeva College

Except for the Royal match, the other matches will be awaygames. The senior team has been in training since October 2018.

The Legends game was worked off on 2nd of February atHavelock ground when the Old Peterites Legends took on the2019 1st XV team for the I. Hussain Didi memorial trophy whichwas handsomely won by the College team. Despite earlysetbacks the team has recovered well and is confident of successin this year’s league.

We wish the team ALL THE BEST for a wonderful 2019 season!


The Annual Tennis Prize Giving of St Peter’s College was held on 10th December 2018 atthe College Hall. The event was well attended by the Priest-in-Charge of Sports, specialinvitees, parents, coaches and the players themselves.

The Chief Guest at the Prize Giving was Mr. Angelo Patrick, who spearheaded theefforts to restart Tennis at St Peter’s College in 1998 together with a group of like-minded parents, and the Guest of Honour was Mr T Dineshkanthan

The coaches led by Mr Dinith Pathiraja, Junior Coaches Mr P. Thizanth, Mr PrageethPolgampola and Mr M. Rizvi as well as MIC Mr Bernard Jesuthasan, were recognized fortheir untiring commitment and contribution to improve the standard of Tennis at StPeter’s College over the years.

The annual tennis encounter between the Old Boys and Present College Playerso r g a n i z e d b y t h e t e n n i s f o u n d a t i o n was held on the 30th of December2018 at the college tenniscourts and was won by the Old Boys.

OBUH CELEBRATES OKTOBERFEST

This year’s Oktoberfest saw large crowds gathering at the College hall toenjoy a fun filled evening with scrumptious Bavarian food and beverages.All who attended had a fantastic time with loads of laughter, merrymakingand dancing to the music of Manilal and Upeka. This event was organizedby the committee of the Old Boys Union House(OBUH) and was held on27th October 2018.



The OBU’s(OPSC) inter-batch softball cricket tournament for the Gerry de MelTrophy was conducted on 4th November at the College Grounds.

There were many teams representing the different batches from as far back as 1971and even upto last year's batch with some batches having as many as 12 teams.Many of the past Peterite cricketers represented their batches to the delight of thosewere there to witness some power hitting.

Though the skies were gloomy at times and rain was predicted by the weatherman,thankfully the rains did not come and the entire tournament was concluded withouta hitch.

With the preliminary rounds concluded, the final of the under 40s category saw the2009 Batch 'A' team and 2005 team battling it out. Eventually the 2009 Batch 'A'annexed the Gerry De Mel Trophy. The 2005 Batch, as runners up, received the SurajPerera Trophy.

Individual awards were won by the following:

▪ Best Fielder - Mahesh (2009)▪ Best Bowler - Andre (2009)▪ Best Batsman - Dilanka (2005)▪ Man of the Match - Kusal (2009)

In a home and home battle for the over 40s title, the 87-92 Batch 'B' team met the87-92 Batch 'C' team and their 'B' team emerged champions receiving the Dr.Nielhan Samaranayake Trophy while the 'C' team were awarded the Malik MendisTrophy as runners up.

The recipients of individual awards in this category were the following, all of whomwere from the 'B' team:

▪ Best Fielder - Eraj Jayawardena▪ Best Bowler - Dishan Fernando▪ Best Batsman and Man of the Match - Sheran Joachim

HONOURING OUR TEACHERS ON

TEACHERS' DAY

The felicitation of Teachers of the Colombo and Gampha Branch was held on 9thNovember 2018. This year’s event was organized with a ‘Difference’, the committeeopted from the traditional ‘Day Outing’ to a “Paduru Party”, which was held at theWomen’s International Club Hall Colombo 7.

A record number of 167 participated with included the priests, nuns and tutorial staff,most of whom were clad in oriental fashion. The ambiance of the hall wastransformed into a ‘Village’ setting.



LIGHTING OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE

The traditional start to the Christmas season 2018 was marked by“Lighting the Christmas tree" on 01st December at the PeteriteLounge under patronage of Rev Fr Kamal Kumar. Invitees and wellwishers were there to witness the event and a live band was inattendance. The guests, who had an entertaining evening, wereserved with cake and wine.



OBUH SING ALONG 2018

The OBUH’s annual Sing Along was conducted in grand style on on 08thDecember 2018. The packed house was in true holiday spirit, singing anddancing to the tunes of King, led by Chandralal Fonseka. There were gifts galoreon offer for the table draw, entrance ticket and innovative “Money Bag” drawmaking ensuring the participants had a memorable evening further enhancedby the festive ambiance created through décor and lighting.

The ceremonies in connection with the 1st Day at School for thestudents joining St. Peter's College, Gampaha Branch for the year2019, was held on Monday, 14th January.

The OBU is actively involved in the above which has become arecent tradition with the members of the committee ofmanagement representing the OBU.

BAMBALAPITIYA

The ceremonies in connection with the 1st Day at School for thestudents joining St. Peter's College, Bambalapitiya for the year2019, was held on Thursday, 17th January commencing at 7.45a.m.

The OBU is actively involved in the above which has become arecent tradition with the members of the committee ofmanagement representing the OBU.
